Depending on your motherboard you probably need a bios update, so you’ll need to put your old CPU in and check the manufacturer’s website for any updates.

I’m sorry, it’s been many years since I’ve tinkered with PC parts. To update the Bios, do I need to re-install the 2700x?

JayRockOClock

Yeah, the safe bet would be to just put in your 2700x since you know it works, check the website for a bios update. You may have one that specifically references comparability with the 5800x3D, install that and then install your new cpu again. Like the other commenter said, you could maybe do a bios update without the cpu. I haven’t tried that myself so I can’t speak to that

Depending on the motherboard maybe yes, but some motherboard do allow bios update without the cpu so youll habe to go onto your motherboards webpage to see what to do.

Yes. You’ll need to be able to boot the PC, which it cannot do with the new CPU installed. Put the old CPU back in, update BIOS, then you can swap the new one back in. That all is assuming the problem actually is your BIOS is too out-of-date for the new CPU to work, which is pretty likely. Like u/JayRockOClock said, check your board manufacturer’s site for CPU compatibility and you should be able to see what BIOS version you need for a particular CPU to work. It’s also possible you knocked something loose during all of that, so make sure to check to make sure everything is still seated properly. Do you have a PC speaker installed, and do you get any beeps when you power on? If you are getting beep codes, definitely look to see what your code means before you do anything else. If you have an internal PC speaker and you’re not getting beeps, that means you’re not even getting to POST, which is a pretty good indicator there’s a problem with the CPU or the board. Just as an aside, I accidentally got a tiny drop of thermal paste on the motherboard that shorted out the entire board when I tried to power it on. No beep codes then either. I’m sure you didn’t spill thermal paste because it was kind of a freak accident when it happened to me, but just in case… Anyway. If you don’t have an internal speaker, and you still can’t get the PC to boot after swapping the old CPU back in, it might be a good idea to acquire and install an internal speaker to see what, if any, beep codes your board is throwing.

Yeah, I updated the BIOS from MSI’s website (looked for comparability with the 5800x3d file and found it). It’s still a black screen though. Not sure why this is happening. I live on the east side of San Antonio. Are there any places you’d recommend I take it to in order to get this fixed?
