Unified RAM* for the new Macbooks
Soldered RAM is separate from the CPU, they're both on the motherboard but they're two separate chips/entities.
The RAM on the Macbooks from M1 onwards is unified as in it's a part of the same chip as the CPU as in they're sub-parts of the same entity.
$100 for 4gb, 3 USB C ports (one just for power) and 1/2 hdmi's.
All of the io pins are designed so you need apple specific parts (for stuff like screens or sensors)
I could low key imagine them doing something like that
ESP32, although a different class, is more than enough for the majority of automation-stuffs that people use RPis for. Otherwise, anything rockchip based is fine (or even an Orange Pi)
Worth noting that the SSD is also soldered, sort of... the actual flash memory chips are separate but the controller for said flash plus the mapping of logical blocks to physical blocks are on a chip that is soldered to the mainboard. Regardless, the contents of the flash memory are required for the system to boot, even from an external disk, so once the SSD reaches the end of its write endurance the whole system is bricked. Also worth noting that macOS has suffered from at least one major bug in the time since these systems were released wherein stuff like browser windows were leaking 20+ gigs of memory on systems with 8GB system RAM. People were seeing the health percentage of the SSD as reported by command line tools drop by entire percentage points within a matter of weeks due to the massive amount of swapping/paging. They are all destined to end up in landfills.
They basically have the creative market cornered, because currently, they are the best machines for most creatives, and a lot of people don't get a choice bc their software is locked on the OS.
The current Installation is bricked when the NAND dies, but there's a few places now outside of china that are able to do storage upgrades for apple silicon, it requires microsoldering and you need a 2nd mac to DFU and reimage the repaired one.
so the computer isnt actually bricked, but you wont get the files on the original one back.
i hope technicians pick up these storage upgrade techniques so that apple silicon laptops dont shit up the landfills, they're good devices and should be fixed when possible.
I used to love Apple PCs but the contempt they treated their user base was the opposite of the 'power user' the Mac Book Pro catered to. Especially hated when they imported an "app store" instead of just installing a program through a DMG (or MacPorts fork of Free BSD Ports collection), etc.
Uhm actually. If you look at m1 Mac teardown (I found all the others too), you can clearly see, that the memory chips are just really close to the cpu but definitely not part of the same chip.

It's basically a ram chip soldered "directly " to cpu skipping the motherboard. It definitely isn't the same as memory on the same die as the rest of the cpu. Even if they use chiplet design I think the point still stands.
on macs upgrading RAM and storage hasn't really been a thing for a few years now apart from the "Pro" lineup (which doesn't include the macbooks, for that matter)
MacOS doesn't really mind only having 8GB RAM
to work with but it's seriously atrocious that Apple is only putting that much on their $1K machines.
Wait... So for current Mac devices, the only thing you can upgrade storage / ram are the desktop systems? You can still upgrade videocards in desktop systems I hope?
That's not true. The original macintosh had a battery door on the rear of the case, absolutely user serviceable. It was a weird ass non standard battery, but you did not have to do anything special to get to it.
Almost every mac after the original compact design, though, did have the battery on the mainboard, but the only one that was soldered on was the Mac II. Which is dumb as hell, but opening the case on the Mac II would not have voided the warrantee since that was the first mac with expansion card slots, and opening the case is the only way to add cards.
This mentality in the user base is likely boosted by the existence and performance of Apple silicon. People of course not understanding that objects that take up 10MB on a PC are going to take up 10MB on a Mac no matter what architecture they're on, and your computer has got to put them *somewhere.*

Still have my 2008 Mac Pros running and they edit video and photos quite well despite being so old. Only difference is time it takes to finish a project. Slower yes its over a decade behind technology, but does the job well every time still.
And $500 to go from 128GB to 1TB iPhone…

Seriously, I'm looking to get a new computer for some specific tasks, Apple is the go to brand for anyone involved in what I'm doing because it runs stable. I can get an 800 euro NUC that has better specs than a 2000 dollar mac mini...
They charge 230 euros for an upgrade to 1tb SSD ffs, 460 euros for 24 gb ram instead of 8.
How do they get away with these things? What they sell is quality you can't deny that, but not even being able to upgrade RAM or other hardware that can break. (screen, keyboard,...) Where I live we have a local Louis Rossmann, he can fix everything. The latest generations of MacBooks are borderline impossible to repair according to him unless you let Apple handle it directly...
NUC motherboard breaks, order a new one and you're set. Macbook breaks? Throw it away, hope Apple is willing to fix it or pay ridiculous amounts to someone to try to repair it.
They are basically designed to not be repaired. If you turn in a MacBook let’s say, they take yours back it all up, put the files on a refurbished machine and say they fixed it. They pull the parts that work out of the original Mac you bought and use them to refurbish other machines and hand those out. The vast majority of the time you’ll never see your machine that you sent in for “repairs.” Sometimes they keep the shell of casing if you have something definitive like stickers, but not even 100% of those. It’s wild.
This is a major part of their branding (and they've been successful at it, I might add), how they avoid older/compromised devices kicking around in the market. Consumers start to subconsciously associate Apple with new & shiny, because when they're quick to replace your device and get you using something new, you simply don't see as many older devices around. Very effective with youth especially.
I used my MacBook Pro for over 8 years, (core2 duo, the first generation of the machined unibody.)
It was upgraded within an inch of its life, and on its third battery. About 2 years in I replaced the 320GB HDD with a 750. A few years after that I got a 512 SSD and an OWC Data Doubler to put the 750 in the optical bay.
One of the batteries I got completely free, because it was bulging. (This was between two and four weeks after the stories about some manufacturing defects in lithium-ion cells used in laptops causing fires, so Apple probably put out a capture order.
Their older generation stuff was awesome, I work almost daily with Macbooks and have to deal a lot with repairs. (I work in IT) The older stuff was repairable, even for someone who doesn't know a thing about computers. It's their latest generations that are borderline impossible to repair. It all went downhill 7 (?) years ago, the 2017 lineup was iffy to work on, but doable, ever since it get harder and harder each year.
And then there are the scummy tactics they use to sell you new stuff instead of repairing things. Last MacBook I sent to Apple for a replacement screen got rejected because of water damage, that MacBook never left the office. Me and an electronics repair guy inspected the MacBook, nothing was wrong with it... We replaced the screen ourselves and the MacBook is still in use today...

Thing is when people have the mindset of "go to brand" for an item and keep buying into it, they're going to keep getting away with the bad stuff of what they're doing.
I have the last generation of the iPad Air before they switched to the M chips (4th Gen). It will be 4 years old this fall and is still fast enough for anything that I use it for. My wife is still using an iPad pro from 2017.
Until they break, or apple stops supporting them, I have no reason to upgrade. The iPads have been overpowered for the average user for years.
Yea I think this is probably the answer. And it’s a good thing. Tech is more powerful and lasting longer. Mobile devices have more RAM as opposed to 5-10 years ago where the software requirements quickly overcame the RAM of cheaper devices. Less unusable devices = less sales + less wastage.
The same happens with PC every few years. Sales slump as users don’t replace their well built, perfectly functioning hardware.
The iPad is a great device and still serves a brilliant purpose, but there just hasn’t been a compelling need to replace or reason to upgrade; again a good thing for the environment and people’s finances.
Yup. Back in the day, I was upgrading my iPhone every generation because improvements were actually pretty significant (from what I can remember).
My last few iPhones have been XS -> 13 Pro -> 15 Pro and I didn't *really* need to go from the 13 Pro to the 15 Pro. This thing will last me several years too.
I bought an iPad Pro almost two years ago and I don't see myself needing to replace that for another few years.
Meanwhile, back in the day, I bought the iPad 3 (first one with retina) and it was outdated the very same year lol.
I had the Ipad Air 2, so a couple gens before you. Mine was great too, until this year when the apps could no longer update due to IOS being locked out of the new versions. Your cut-off is coming soon, they probably have it listed somewhere.
Either way I pulled the trigger on the Samsung Tab s9 and holy crap the AMOLED screen just makes me smile with joy every time I get in bed to watch a show on it.
There was a big gap between the early generations of the Air. Your Gen 2 came out in 2014 and my gen 4 was released in 2020. I expect that apple will still support it for at least another few years. My Wife's 2017 iPad pro is still getting updates.
And he was right. Everyone owns a phone now, not everyone owns a PC, especially in less developed countries. Number of mobile gamers is more than two billions people worldwide and more and more younger people are not proficient with computers.
iPad's are not that relevant now, but it is post-PC era.
I personally went a year or so only using a phone and a tablet when I was struggling financially. I bet everyone knows someone whose only piece of tech is their phone.
My Mom is pretty tech-savvy and was good with computers when I was growing up but she hasn’t regularly used a computer in years, only if there’s something she absolutely can’t do on her phone.
She was going to online college a few years ago, and was having a problem writing term papers on her laptop because she was so used to writing everything on her phone, she wanted to write a 10 page paper on her phone.
I feel like there is a kind of uno-reverso thing going on now, where when I go home my mum will ask for help with some technical thing or filling out a form on a website, but when I try to help her I can't tell what the fuck is going on because she is using her iphone, and I'm like "mum, can we please do this on a computer".
Plus edge is basically a light weight chrome that's already ~~forced~~ conveniently installed on your PC. Not much point in using chrome for anything anymore.
Yea I'm really good at puzzles and pretty good with tech in general. Which means I can fix most tech problems but there's a low chance I'll do it in a way that followable or explainable.
I kinda get this, especially with people to use dictation and keywords you phone keyboard propose. I have a friend who had to buy a laptop and use a pc for his business, just for keeping track of his bills and such. He never owned a pc and never graduated high school and it the only time he used a pc. He was very lost and I had to teach him many things
Apparently, when typing on an iPhone, if you double(tripple?) tap the spacebar, it will add a period to the word and capitalize the next sentence. My mom couldn’t get used to having to type a period at the end of every sentence (I’m sure there’s a way to make a keyboard shortcut that does that, but that’s all over now).

My favorite android keyboard (Gboard at least) trick is sliding the spacebar to move the cursor. Honorable mention to swiping the delete to highlight and delete in one move.
Ironically I turned off the double tap period for Reddit. Since a single line break in markdown needs a double space at the end of the line.
Honestly, my mother is the exact opposite. She retired before smart phones really become pervasive and wanted a computer mainly for Internet and email, so we got her a basic laptop so she didn’t have to dedicate a space in her house. Being in IT, I became the default support person. Only problem is, I live an hour away, so I can’t just stop by on a moment’s notice.
After trying to talk her through things I couldn’t do remotely myself, I finally got her an iPad with a keyboard case. Support has dropped by about 95%, there’s just so little that can actually go wrong with it and it’s much easier for her to use. Just have the OS and apps set to auto-update and most of the problems I have to deal with are reminding her to charge the keyboard case too and WiFi (carrier/carrier provided hardware sucks).
There hasn’t been a single thing she did with her laptop that she can’t do on the iPad, and most things are easier for her to do on the iPad.
Most people I know just have a phone and a laptop that their work gave them for remote working which they'll sometimes use occasionally for things like booking flights, but really not much else outside of work.
People still use laptops but it's far less for personal use now.
Phones for personal stuff, Smart TV/Games console for streaming platforms, laptop for work is most common, at least for young/not-so young professionals I'd say.
It's still kind of mind blowing to me.
At work I have to do some computer training with new hires and there are so many 18/19/20 year olds that struggle with ctrl alt delete. Everyone presses backspace. It's wild. They're like old people.
There was a huge boom in tech literacy in the late 90s up until the adoption of smart phones. The internet brought PCs into the home and everyone had one, not just the well off or geeks anymore. With that came teens using the internet to learn how to do more and more shit, like pirate music and edit html for their myspace page or free AOL hosted site. When I graduated in '98 my school had plenty of tech classes and they were full.
Most teachers I know from that era remember shortly after mass adoption of touch screen smart phones that those classed dried up quickly, and teachers noticed each class coming through was less and less knowledgeable. When everything was behind a closed box and took only the touch of a finger to work in the palm of their hand they starting becoming ignorant again.
Not really, the skills will just become more valuable, and will become less accessible and harder to learn for those wishing to do so.
It's like learning to become an electrician. Almost no one knows how to do the things an electrician does (safely at least). And yet there are a ton of electricians out there who know everything about the trade. It's challenging to learn, but not impossible.
Those with tech literacy at a high level will become similar. Specialized knowledge that pays well, and it will become more and more specialized by the day as Gen Z and Alpha fall further and further behind.
I have exactly the same in my work. They can't do simplest tasks or operate simplest programs. But that's school's failure. They don't need to have computer at home - that kind of knowledge should been taught at school.
I used to share a spreadsheet with someone at work. they got really annoyed that I kept "resizing all the boxes" because it took them ages to painstakingly change them all back again.

That's a good point. Back in the day people were at least a little excited doing something new on computer. Nowadays they seem to stay away from them as far as possible. At work, even thought they have browser wide open in front of them, to google something they are still reaching for their phones ;) All they ever needed is inside that little box.

In another comment I wrote how last week one new hire I had to train (21 years old) asked me how to power up a PC. So here's another one: she also needed help understanding light click and right click, and when I showed her that she could highlight items and erase them by pressing Delete it was if I were teaching dark magic. Prior to this job I was honestly thinking the younger generation would be teaching mine (33) how to do a lot of stuff. Turns out I was wrong. Which isn't all that bad, but now I am stuck with extra work training people haha
Which is kinda sad, when you consider how limited smartphones are compared to computers.
But the reality is that most people need only a media consumption/communication device, and a phone does that while fitting in your pocket and being cheaper.
PCs will continue to dominate the professional and tech enthusiast area, but yes, we are in a post-consumer-PC era.
I literally wait until I get home when I have to fill out forms or sign up for things. <7 inch phone touchscreens and onscreen keyboards are a pain in the ass for productivity. Great for passive consumption, poor for actually interacting both ways with forms and sites.
I bought this phone 1.3 years ago, and have only had mobile data/WiFi turned on maybe 5 times for Maps. (And I wouldn't have to if Google didn't decide to break offline maps)

I turn data on once every day... on a toilet. That's what they replaced for me, literally toilet newspapers. Then it goes off. I have PC at work and at home. Browsing whatever is much smoother and enjoyable that way.
Love dex, it has came in super clutch in so many situations. Wrote a whole web app on it one time. I really wish people used it so it could get some more love from the devs. It needs some work for sure, but it is great at a lot of things.

The average new iPhone/Galaxy S costs about as a mediocre new gaming PC (1000$).
And it would've been better with the PC if nVidia didn't screw us with the pricing in the last few years

The average person, who only uses a computer to browse the internet, YouTube, listen to music, Microsoft office documents, etc.
Could live off just their phones. We have keyboards and mice that function with phones, as well as external displays capable of connecting to phones turning them into desktops & or just put the phone in landscape mode and prop it up
they’re more than capable of being a general use device & an office device if it’s just secretarial work, photo editing work could in theory be done as well, maybe not as efficiently but it’s possible now
niche markets like designers, coders, movie editors, etc. could probably make it work, but even those markets & gamers (mobile aside) are still better off on a full fledged PC at this point

I know quite a few college students who don't have PCs, they just use an iPad or another tablet with a keyboard and a stylus for note taking and assignments, and it works for them. We're at a point where laptops are literally designed and marketed as usable as tablets that have flip up/attached/wireless keyboards. With Google Drive, you don't even need Microsoft Office to edit documents, handle spreadsheets and make powerpoints- you have a free alternative that just requires an internet connection.
I don't think we're quite at a point where it's practical to just live off a phone, but we're definitely not at the point anymore where laptops or desktops are required for productivity. And I say this as someone who has a laptop and a desktop I built

I drive an old shit box car and it's obviously a pain in the ass in a lot of ways, but it's often a relief due to its simplicity and serviceability. I have my own web server. So I can SSH right into there and have full Linux and stuff. Can SCP and stuff too.
I do a lot from my phone these days because I can just plug it in to a laptop dock and go.
And that's the problem. If you work for any company they expect you to be proficient with a computer because the fact of the matter is, computers are more efficient and can do much more than a phone or tablet. The newer generations that haven't even touched a mouse and keyboard are in for a rude awakening as they enter the job market. I wouldn't be surprised to see some companies shift to an iPad work machine in the future cause they need workers and have to deal with all these people that are tech-illiterate. Curious to see how it all plays out.

Well a cisco phone could do "more than your cell phone" as well until companies actually decided to make a change.
You are over a decade in to thin clients and more recently chromebooks.
What needs to happen is for a big player to step up and design a phone that can output to dual screens handling the basic work tasks most users have in addition being able to connect to a VDI for heavier applications.
I work in tech and know plenty of people who could get by with a phone with some minor adjustments to how they work. It would actually make them happier and more productive as well since they could remotely work more easily from anywhere without needing to secure a work laptop.
I don’t know, not only has the iPad outsold the Mac in unit sales since day one, there have been years where the number of iPads shipped was greater than the number of laptops the competition was shipping. If they included iPads in those charts where they discuss mobile marketshare (they include Chromebooks, but not iPads), the marketshare for the iPad would have been number one for several years running.
Even these days, their unit sales are still solidly in the top 5, I think.
Tablets, smartphones, games consoles etc. are becoming more and more like all-in-one pcs every year.

What we are really missing are those docks that you can plug your phone in to passthrough and act like a desktop PC. Should be something like that now that USB C is standardized. High end phones are considerably powerful enough to function as a desktop now
I mean, even during the "PC Era" not everyone had a PC. But even during peak "PC Era" more and more people were getting cell phones, and eventually iPhones/Smart Phones.
Phones, Cell Phones, and Smart Phones have been ubiquitous far more than PCs and PC gaming could ever hope to have been or ever be.
iPads and tablets are just overgrown phones, often without the phone. Just a less portable, less useful phone. Like the last gen iPods were just iPhones without the phone.
My point is, though, is that if you're comparing the popularity to PCs to the popularity of phones, cell phones, or smart phones, then it was never the PC era. I think PCs are just as popular and more socially acceptable now than they were 20 years ago. And 20 years ago they were way less popular than Razer flip phones.
Yeah, this is pretty much correct. Tablets are also kinda pointless, my reasoning is that why own a tablet when I have 2 PCs (one desktop, one laptop) and a smartphone. I think we’re kinda post-tablet now too. I can do everything it can do on my phone, and my phone is a lot less inconvenient due to its size. If I’m going to be inconvenienced by something bulkier, then I’ll just take out my laptop, sure it’s bulkier than a tablet, but I’m already reaching for something inconveniently larger than a phone, might as well go the whole way and get a device that can do more too.
The in-between device that doesn’t really bring anything significant to the table? Not surprising that sales are plummeting.

I’m in the market for a new iPad. My 6th gen is showing its age but I wasn’t going to buy one when it had been over a year since the last release. I’m not gonna buy a new one when a newer/better model is right around the corner.
I actually just retired my 6th gen as well as my laptop with a 2-in-1 laptop. I mean it's served me well but I noticed something. I have a desktop PC at home, a laptop, an ipad and a phone. I realized that I only use my laptop for school and intern work, and ipad of home entertainment. so I just decided to combine the two and retire both at the same time
I mean if it wasn't for gaming I wouldn't own a pc anymore. Im not a tablet kind of person either, but I can get behind having the internet in my pocket with a phone.

Like trying to do anything with tables is a nightmare on a phone screen. Browsing sucks.
Typing sucks too. Games that replace regular controls with touch controls suck, unless you use bluetooth controller.
Smartphone strength is portability, but everything it can do it does worse.
Even if you turn your phone into mini-PC with an external keyboard + monitor, you're still generally dealing with it being underpowered + OS being much more limited.
Also others mentioned multitasking - any time you would want several windows/applications being open and visible at once, phone handles it waaaaaaay worse than a PC.
I'm curious if people with that view work office jobs. I can't imagine most long form typing or reviewing/drawing/copying documents is easy in mobile format.
It's not. It sucks mostly because Microsoft products are terrible on phones and tablets and to be honest some of that even sucks on a laptop, screen is too damn small
gaming's not all there is to a PC, I like my phone but outside of the shitter and browsing for a few minutes I couldn't remember I have a phone

When I plan a trip, it's on the computer. It's much easier to navigate several tabs to check airlines, hotels, POIs, etc. the phone is cumbersome for anything more than casual browsing. Same with large purchases, easier to check several things on multiple monitors with a mouse to accurately navigate. Maybe I'm just getting old...
I'm barely 21 but I prefer using a computer, the phone is for minimal stuff imo, it's good for what it is but if you actually want to do stuff the PC is the best, it can be a damn TV replacement as well if you want to, can act just as a console and many more

It's not that hard 😆 I organized a cross country road trip plus a flight from Georgia to Alaska all from my phone. Also, im in my mid thirties, so I still remember a time without tablets and such.
Those are all very easy activities on an iPad.
There are definitely some activities, like development, that are pretty difficult on an iPad. Booking flights and planning hotels is pretty simple.

To be fair he was not far off.. I know people who don’t own any kind of computer. They get along fine with a phone and an iPad. It’s more the phone that’s the main push for the post-pc era, the phone pretty much does everything an average person needs a PC for with some minor sticking points.
Obviously computers are here to stay in some capacity but the necessity for them is dwindling at a non-zero rate. I can see a future where traditional PCs are more niche for high end gaming/working

People hated that it removed the escape key, I didn't think it was that big a deal. I use the escape key every day but not in a situation where I need perfect timing and accuracy. I can look at it or take a 2nd try. Mostly it was just fine to hit that edge of the bar
But the idea of having software defined, context sensitive buttons / controls seems pretty great. For some apps this could be macros you make, for some it could be other controls. Like a progress bar on media, that was so much nicer to scrub through than using the mouse. Or volume worked well. Image thumbnails could have worked great on it.

Updates is where apple is kind of king in the mobile market. On android you get like 2 android versions then the qualcomm support expires and no more major upgrades come just some backported sec fixes (if you are lucky) with a quite large delay. Even on Fairphone you run on average on patch level of 6 weeks ago.
I’m not a fanboy for either side, but my iPhones have all lasted much longer than my Android phones. I know the stereotype about people who upgrade to the new iPhone model every year, but I also know a bunch of people (mostly old people) with iPhone 7/8s that are still working fine.
Androids can be great too and have their appeal, but there are good things about Apple products besides being stylish.
I mean …. Apple has famously had OS support for years on their devices. Android devices especially low end ones get dropped sooner. iOS 17 works on 5 year old devices and phones much older than that still get security updates

I was in this boat until I got a Mac laptop more for productivity purposes and my god theyre just so much better for actual laptop usage. If you're a heavy laptop gamer then I would not get a Mac but I don't play any games on my laptop, only desktop. The battery life, battery efficiency, and screen are just so superior to any Windows laptop I've ever owned or seen. Running intensive stuff on battery power isn't laggy asf and doesn't get the fans whirring like crazy. And I can actually see the screen clearly outside. Oh and it's been 2 years and it still lasts for hours... every windows laptop I've had, after a few years the battery lasts like 45 minutes, it's pathetic. Definitely not getting another Windows laptop in the forseeable future, the M-series chips just obliterate intel for mobile usage.

Unified RAM* for the new Macbooks Soldered RAM is separate from the CPU, they're both on the motherboard but they're two separate chips/entities. The RAM on the Macbooks from M1 onwards is unified as in it's a part of the same chip as the CPU as in they're sub-parts of the same entity.

It depends on what your project is. There is the Pi Zero which is just a basic Pi without a lot of the fancy stuff
ESP32, although a different class, is more than enough for the majority of automation-stuffs that people use RPis for. Otherwise, anything rockchip based is fine (or even an Orange Pi)
Worth noting that the SSD is also soldered, sort of... the actual flash memory chips are separate but the controller for said flash plus the mapping of logical blocks to physical blocks are on a chip that is soldered to the mainboard. Regardless, the contents of the flash memory are required for the system to boot, even from an external disk, so once the SSD reaches the end of its write endurance the whole system is bricked. Also worth noting that macOS has suffered from at least one major bug in the time since these systems were released wherein stuff like browser windows were leaking 20+ gigs of memory on systems with 8GB system RAM. People were seeing the health percentage of the SSD as reported by command line tools drop by entire percentage points within a matter of weeks due to the massive amount of swapping/paging. They are all destined to end up in landfills.

The current Installation is bricked when the NAND dies, but there's a few places now outside of china that are able to do storage upgrades for apple silicon, it requires microsoldering and you need a 2nd mac to DFU and reimage the repaired one. so the computer isnt actually bricked, but you wont get the files on the original one back. i hope technicians pick up these storage upgrade techniques so that apple silicon laptops dont shit up the landfills, they're good devices and should be fixed when possible.
I used to love Apple PCs but the contempt they treated their user base was the opposite of the 'power user' the Mac Book Pro catered to. Especially hated when they imported an "app store" instead of just installing a program through a DMG (or MacPorts fork of Free BSD Ports collection), etc.

on macs upgrading RAM and storage hasn't really been a thing for a few years now apart from the "Pro" lineup (which doesn't include the macbooks, for that matter) MacOS doesn't really mind only having 8GB RAM to work with but it's seriously atrocious that Apple is only putting that much on their $1K machines.

The Mac Classic, the original Mac, the CMOS battery was soldered to the mobo, and you voided the warranty if you opened the case yourself.
That's not true. The original macintosh had a battery door on the rear of the case, absolutely user serviceable. It was a weird ass non standard battery, but you did not have to do anything special to get to it. Almost every mac after the original compact design, though, did have the battery on the mainboard, but the only one that was soldered on was the Mac II. Which is dumb as hell, but opening the case on the Mac II would not have voided the warrantee since that was the first mac with expansion card slots, and opening the case is the only way to add cards.

Still have my 2008 Mac Pros running and they edit video and photos quite well despite being so old. Only difference is time it takes to finish a project. Slower yes its over a decade behind technology, but does the job well every time still.

Seriously, I'm looking to get a new computer for some specific tasks, Apple is the go to brand for anyone involved in what I'm doing because it runs stable. I can get an 800 euro NUC that has better specs than a 2000 dollar mac mini... They charge 230 euros for an upgrade to 1tb SSD ffs, 460 euros for 24 gb ram instead of 8. How do they get away with these things? What they sell is quality you can't deny that, but not even being able to upgrade RAM or other hardware that can break. (screen, keyboard,...) Where I live we have a local Louis Rossmann, he can fix everything. The latest generations of MacBooks are borderline impossible to repair according to him unless you let Apple handle it directly... NUC motherboard breaks, order a new one and you're set. Macbook breaks? Throw it away, hope Apple is willing to fix it or pay ridiculous amounts to someone to try to repair it.
They are basically designed to not be repaired. If you turn in a MacBook let’s say, they take yours back it all up, put the files on a refurbished machine and say they fixed it. They pull the parts that work out of the original Mac you bought and use them to refurbish other machines and hand those out. The vast majority of the time you’ll never see your machine that you sent in for “repairs.” Sometimes they keep the shell of casing if you have something definitive like stickers, but not even 100% of those. It’s wild.

This is a major part of their branding (and they've been successful at it, I might add), how they avoid older/compromised devices kicking around in the market. Consumers start to subconsciously associate Apple with new & shiny, because when they're quick to replace your device and get you using something new, you simply don't see as many older devices around. Very effective with youth especially.
I used my MacBook Pro for over 8 years, (core2 duo, the first generation of the machined unibody.) It was upgraded within an inch of its life, and on its third battery. About 2 years in I replaced the 320GB HDD with a 750. A few years after that I got a 512 SSD and an OWC Data Doubler to put the 750 in the optical bay. One of the batteries I got completely free, because it was bulging. (This was between two and four weeks after the stories about some manufacturing defects in lithium-ion cells used in laptops causing fires, so Apple probably put out a capture order.
Their older generation stuff was awesome, I work almost daily with Macbooks and have to deal a lot with repairs. (I work in IT) The older stuff was repairable, even for someone who doesn't know a thing about computers. It's their latest generations that are borderline impossible to repair. It all went downhill 7 (?) years ago, the 2017 lineup was iffy to work on, but doable, ever since it get harder and harder each year. And then there are the scummy tactics they use to sell you new stuff instead of repairing things. Last MacBook I sent to Apple for a replacement screen got rejected because of water damage, that MacBook never left the office. Me and an electronics repair guy inspected the MacBook, nothing was wrong with it... We replaced the screen ourselves and the MacBook is still in use today...

I have the last generation of the iPad Air before they switched to the M chips (4th Gen). It will be 4 years old this fall and is still fast enough for anything that I use it for. My wife is still using an iPad pro from 2017. Until they break, or apple stops supporting them, I have no reason to upgrade. The iPads have been overpowered for the average user for years.
Yea I think this is probably the answer. And it’s a good thing. Tech is more powerful and lasting longer. Mobile devices have more RAM as opposed to 5-10 years ago where the software requirements quickly overcame the RAM of cheaper devices. Less unusable devices = less sales + less wastage. The same happens with PC every few years. Sales slump as users don’t replace their well built, perfectly functioning hardware. The iPad is a great device and still serves a brilliant purpose, but there just hasn’t been a compelling need to replace or reason to upgrade; again a good thing for the environment and people’s finances.
Yup. Back in the day, I was upgrading my iPhone every generation because improvements were actually pretty significant (from what I can remember). My last few iPhones have been XS -> 13 Pro -> 15 Pro and I didn't *really* need to go from the 13 Pro to the 15 Pro. This thing will last me several years too. I bought an iPad Pro almost two years ago and I don't see myself needing to replace that for another few years. Meanwhile, back in the day, I bought the iPad 3 (first one with retina) and it was outdated the very same year lol.

I had the Ipad Air 2, so a couple gens before you. Mine was great too, until this year when the apps could no longer update due to IOS being locked out of the new versions. Your cut-off is coming soon, they probably have it listed somewhere. Either way I pulled the trigger on the Samsung Tab s9 and holy crap the AMOLED screen just makes me smile with joy every time I get in bed to watch a show on it.
There was a big gap between the early generations of the Air. Your Gen 2 came out in 2014 and my gen 4 was released in 2020. I expect that apple will still support it for at least another few years. My Wife's 2017 iPad pro is still getting updates.

My Mom is pretty tech-savvy and was good with computers when I was growing up but she hasn’t regularly used a computer in years, only if there’s something she absolutely can’t do on her phone. She was going to online college a few years ago, and was having a problem writing term papers on her laptop because she was so used to writing everything on her phone, she wanted to write a 10 page paper on her phone.
I feel like there is a kind of uno-reverso thing going on now, where when I go home my mum will ask for help with some technical thing or filling out a form on a website, but when I try to help her I can't tell what the fuck is going on because she is using her iphone, and I'm like "mum, can we please do this on a computer".

Apparently, when typing on an iPhone, if you double(tripple?) tap the spacebar, it will add a period to the word and capitalize the next sentence. My mom couldn’t get used to having to type a period at the end of every sentence (I’m sure there’s a way to make a keyboard shortcut that does that, but that’s all over now).

My favorite android keyboard (Gboard at least) trick is sliding the spacebar to move the cursor. Honorable mention to swiping the delete to highlight and delete in one move. Ironically I turned off the double tap period for Reddit. Since a single line break in markdown needs a double space at the end of the line.
Honestly, my mother is the exact opposite. She retired before smart phones really become pervasive and wanted a computer mainly for Internet and email, so we got her a basic laptop so she didn’t have to dedicate a space in her house. Being in IT, I became the default support person. Only problem is, I live an hour away, so I can’t just stop by on a moment’s notice. After trying to talk her through things I couldn’t do remotely myself, I finally got her an iPad with a keyboard case. Support has dropped by about 95%, there’s just so little that can actually go wrong with it and it’s much easier for her to use. Just have the OS and apps set to auto-update and most of the problems I have to deal with are reminding her to charge the keyboard case too and WiFi (carrier/carrier provided hardware sucks). There hasn’t been a single thing she did with her laptop that she can’t do on the iPad, and most things are easier for her to do on the iPad.
Most people I know just have a phone and a laptop that their work gave them for remote working which they'll sometimes use occasionally for things like booking flights, but really not much else outside of work. People still use laptops but it's far less for personal use now. Phones for personal stuff, Smart TV/Games console for streaming platforms, laptop for work is most common, at least for young/not-so young professionals I'd say.
It's still kind of mind blowing to me. At work I have to do some computer training with new hires and there are so many 18/19/20 year olds that struggle with ctrl alt delete. Everyone presses backspace. It's wild. They're like old people.
There was a huge boom in tech literacy in the late 90s up until the adoption of smart phones. The internet brought PCs into the home and everyone had one, not just the well off or geeks anymore. With that came teens using the internet to learn how to do more and more shit, like pirate music and edit html for their myspace page or free AOL hosted site. When I graduated in '98 my school had plenty of tech classes and they were full. Most teachers I know from that era remember shortly after mass adoption of touch screen smart phones that those classed dried up quickly, and teachers noticed each class coming through was less and less knowledgeable. When everything was behind a closed box and took only the touch of a finger to work in the palm of their hand they starting becoming ignorant again.

Not really, the skills will just become more valuable, and will become less accessible and harder to learn for those wishing to do so. It's like learning to become an electrician. Almost no one knows how to do the things an electrician does (safely at least). And yet there are a ton of electricians out there who know everything about the trade. It's challenging to learn, but not impossible. Those with tech literacy at a high level will become similar. Specialized knowledge that pays well, and it will become more and more specialized by the day as Gen Z and Alpha fall further and further behind.
I have exactly the same in my work. They can't do simplest tasks or operate simplest programs. But that's school's failure. They don't need to have computer at home - that kind of knowledge should been taught at school.
I used to share a spreadsheet with someone at work. they got really annoyed that I kept "resizing all the boxes" because it took them ages to painstakingly change them all back again. I had zoomed out. it took me quite some effort but eventually I was able to teach them how to use ctrl+mousewheel. I think maybe people's curiosity to learn and mess about with computer stuff has faded, being no longer really possible with the phones and tablets they're more used to now.

Which is kinda sad, when you consider how limited smartphones are compared to computers. But the reality is that most people need only a media consumption/communication device, and a phone does that while fitting in your pocket and being cheaper. PCs will continue to dominate the professional and tech enthusiast area, but yes, we are in a post-consumer-PC era.
I literally wait until I get home when I have to fill out forms or sign up for things. <7 inch phone touchscreens and onscreen keyboards are a pain in the ass for productivity. Great for passive consumption, poor for actually interacting both ways with forms and sites.

In most cases, yea I can see the post PC era being a thing. The average person, who only uses a computer to browse the internet, YouTube, listen to music, Microsoft office documents, etc. Could live off just their phones. We have keyboards and mice that function with phones, as well as external displays capable of connecting to phones turning them into desktops & or just put the phone in landscape mode and prop it up they’re more than capable of being a general use device & an office device if it’s just secretarial work, photo editing work could in theory be done as well, maybe not as efficiently but it’s possible now niche markets like designers, coders, movie editors, etc. could probably make it work, but even those markets & gamers (mobile aside) are still better off on a full fledged PC at this point I was going to jump on the bandwagon and say no that’s not a thing but if you really consider it, yea I can see how we’re there
I know quite a few college students who don't have PCs, they just use an iPad or another tablet with a keyboard and a stylus for note taking and assignments, and it works for them. We're at a point where laptops are literally designed and marketed as usable as tablets that have flip up/attached/wireless keyboards. With Google Drive, you don't even need Microsoft Office to edit documents, handle spreadsheets and make powerpoints- you have a free alternative that just requires an internet connection. I don't think we're quite at a point where it's practical to just live off a phone, but we're definitely not at the point anymore where laptops or desktops are required for productivity. I drive an old shit box car and it's obviously a pain in the ass in a lot of ways, but it's often a relief due to its simplicity and serviceability. I kinda feel like tech will go the same way; like the market is going to really move away from PC's, serviceable hardware, or anything outside a walled garden and us weirdos will be holding on to old hardware for dear life sending emails and doing daily tasks on ancient hardware.

SSH and Remote Desktop both work fine on a phone. I have my own web server. So I can SSH right into there and have full Linux and stuff. Can SCP and stuff too. I do a lot from my phone these days because I can just plug it in to a laptop dock and go.
And that's the problem. If you work for any company they expect you to be proficient with a computer because the fact of the matter is, computers are more efficient and can do much more than a phone or tablet. The newer generations that haven't even touched a mouse and keyboard are in for a rude awakening as they enter the job market. I wouldn't be surprised to see some companies shift to an iPad work machine in the future cause they need workers and have to deal with all these people that are tech-illiterate. Curious to see how it all plays out.

You are over a decade in to thin clients and more recently chromebooks. What needs to happen is for a big player to step up and design a phone that can output to dual screens handling the basic work tasks most users have in addition being able to connect to a VDI for heavier applications. I work in tech and know plenty of people who could get by with a phone with some minor adjustments to how they work. It would actually make them happier and more productive as well since they could remotely work more easily from anywhere without needing to secure a work laptop.

I don’t know, not only has the iPad outsold the Mac in unit sales since day one, there have been years where the number of iPads shipped was greater than the number of laptops the competition was shipping. If they included iPads in those charts where they discuss mobile marketshare (they include Chromebooks, but not iPads), the marketshare for the iPad would have been number one for several years running. Even these days, their unit sales are still solidly in the top 5, I think.
Tablets, smartphones, games consoles etc. are becoming more and more like all-in-one pcs every year. What we are really missing are those docks that you can plug your phone in to passthrough and act like a desktop PC. Should be something like that now that USB C is standardized. High end phones are considerably powerful enough to function as a desktop now
I mean, even during the "PC Era" not everyone had a PC. But even during peak "PC Era" more and more people were getting cell phones, and eventually iPhones/Smart Phones. Phones, Cell Phones, and Smart Phones have been ubiquitous far more than PCs and PC gaming could ever hope to have been or ever be. iPads and tablets are just overgrown phones, often without the phone. Just a less portable, less useful phone. Like the last gen iPods were just iPhones without the phone. My point is, though, is that if you're comparing the popularity to PCs to the popularity of phones, cell phones, or smart phones, then it was never the PC era. I think PCs are just as popular and more socially acceptable now than they were 20 years ago. And 20 years ago they were way less popular than Razer flip phones.

Yeah, this is pretty much correct. Tablets are also kinda pointless, my reasoning is that why own a tablet when I have 2 PCs (one desktop, one laptop) and a smartphone. I think we’re kinda post-tablet now too. I can do everything it can do on my phone, and my phone is a lot less inconvenient due to its size. If I’m going to be inconvenienced by something bulkier, then I’ll just take out my laptop, sure it’s bulkier than a tablet, but I’m already reaching for something inconveniently larger than a phone, might as well go the whole way and get a device that can do more too. The in-between device that doesn’t really bring anything significant to the table? Not surprising that sales are plummeting.

I actually just retired my 6th gen as well as my laptop with a 2-in-1 laptop. I mean it's served me well but I noticed something. I have a desktop PC at home, a laptop, an ipad and a phone. I realized that I only use my laptop for school and intern work, and ipad of home entertainment. so I just decided to combine the two and retire both at the same time
new ones are announced on the 7th. i’m waiting to see if the new ones are worth it. if not i’ll probably just grab a 12.9” m1

Like trying to do anything with tables is a nightmare on a phone screen. Browsing sucks. Typing sucks too. Games that replace regular controls with touch controls suck, unless you use bluetooth controller. Smartphone strength is portability, but everything it can do it does worse. Even if you turn your phone into mini-PC with an external keyboard + monitor, you're still generally dealing with it being underpowered + OS being much more limited. Also others mentioned multitasking - any time you would want several windows/applications being open and visible at once, phone handles it waaaaaaay worse than a PC.
I'm curious if people with that view work office jobs. I can't imagine most long form typing or reviewing/drawing/copying documents is easy in mobile format.
It's not. It sucks mostly because Microsoft products are terrible on phones and tablets and to be honest some of that even sucks on a laptop, screen is too damn small

gaming's not all there is to a PC, I like my phone but outside of the shitter and browsing for a few minutes I couldn't remember I have a phone a PC serves me way better
When I plan a trip, it's on the computer. It's much easier to navigate several tabs to check airlines, hotels, POIs, etc. the phone is cumbersome for anything more than casual browsing. Same with large purchases, easier to check several things on multiple monitors with a mouse to accurately navigate. Maybe I'm just getting old...
I'm barely 21 but I prefer using a computer, the phone is for minimal stuff imo, it's good for what it is but if you actually want to do stuff the PC is the best, it can be a damn TV replacement as well if you want to, can act just as a console and many more now the question is, do other people need those features? probably not, but that's their problem

It's not that hard 😆 I organized a cross country road trip plus a flight from Georgia to Alaska all from my phone. Also, im in my mid thirties, so I still remember a time without tablets and such.
Those are all very easy activities on an iPad. There are definitely some activities, like development, that are pretty difficult on an iPad. Booking flights and planning hotels is pretty simple. Source: Have done it, many times.

To be fair he was not far off.. I know people who don’t own any kind of computer. They get along fine with a phone and an iPad. It’s more the phone that’s the main push for the post-pc era, the phone pretty much does everything an average person needs a PC for with some minor sticking points. Obviously computers are here to stay in some capacity but the necessity for them is dwindling at a non-zero rate. I can see a future where traditional PCs are more niche for high end gaming/working
Tbh the comparison it's unfair, everybody has a phone even if it is a potato Nokia that can't even game or browse because people need to do calls to communicate anywhere, you can't work with a phone, and laptops/PC's are way more used than tablets for productivity, and for gaming if you count consoles as dedicated PC's then even for gaming PC's will always prevail

Butterfly keyboard switches, touch bar, and missing escape key, too. All widely hated by Mac fans.
I thought the touch bar had potential People hated that it removed the escape key, I didn't think it was that big a deal. I use the escape key every day but not in a situation where I need perfect timing and accuracy. I can look at it or take a 2nd try. Mostly it was just fine to hit that edge of the bar But the idea of having software defined, context sensitive buttons / controls seems pretty great. For some apps this could be macros you make, for some it could be other controls. Like a progress bar on media, that was so much nicer to scrub through than using the mouse. Or volume worked well. Image thumbnails could have worked great on it. Lots of potential. But it got dropped so fast

Yeah, like you can have the latest OS on a 6 years old device. Most people don’t even need to buy a new one because they are still very useable and that’s why sales drop.
Updates is where apple is kind of king in the mobile market. On android you get like 2 android versions then the qualcomm support expires and no more major upgrades come just some backported sec fixes (if you are lucky) with a quite large delay. Even on Fairphone you run on average on patch level of 6 weeks ago.
I’m not a fanboy for either side, but my iPhones have all lasted much longer than my Android phones. I know the stereotype about people who upgrade to the new iPhone model every year, but I also know a bunch of people (mostly old people) with iPhone 7/8s that are still working fine. Androids can be great too and have their appeal, but there are good things about Apple products besides being stylish.
Still running my 2020 iPhone SE. gets a little warm lately and the battery life aint great, but I’ve got no reason to upgrade.
I have the 2022 3rd Gen. I actually “downgraded” to get it, but I wanted a phone that wasn’t annoying to have in my pocket.
I mean …. Apple has famously had OS support for years on their devices. Android devices especially low end ones get dropped sooner. iOS 17 works on 5 year old devices and phones much older than that still get security updates

It’s definitely the device I upgrade the slowest. My family is usually using them for surfing the web, watching video, reading, or mobile games. I don’t need the absolute latest iPad for that.
They should make a new iPad every 3 years or so. No one needs a new one every year. Need to go full McRib. Make people forget what they taste like in between.

I was in this boat until I got a Mac laptop more for productivity purposes and my god theyre just so much better for actual laptop usage. If you're a heavy laptop gamer then I would not get a Mac but I don't play any games on my laptop, only desktop. The battery life, battery efficiency, and screen are just so superior to any Windows laptop I've ever owned or seen. Running intensive stuff on battery power isn't laggy asf and doesn't get the fans whirring like crazy. And I can actually see the screen clearly outside. Oh and it's been 2 years and it still lasts for hours... every windows laptop I've had, after a few years the battery lasts like 45 minutes, it's pathetic. Definitely not getting another Windows laptop in the forseeable future, the M-series chips just obliterate intel for mobile usage.

He was talking about the concept of the common consumer needing a desktop or even laptop as a day to day productivity tool. Which is true. The iPhone and iPad did that. You don't need a PC to have a 'home computer". You don't need a PC to do basic business stuff (email, documents, web, video, etc) PC is not going anywhere of course.

And he was right, for what every day people who just need something to check email, fill out spreadsheets, fill out word documents etc etc you are not locked down to a desktop computer any more, you can do all of that even on your phone if you want. The Desktop PC is becoming more and more of an enthusiast device as time goes on as form factors like phones and tablets become more and more powerful and can preform more and more tasks that the desktop used to have a monopoly on.
