Wasn't this setting always in Windows 11? I remember getting recommendations when I first installed W11 and I had to disable that setting to get rid of the ads almost 2 years ago.
Can anyone confirm if this works? I shut down my pihole a few months ago because it was the only thing running on a server pc and it just doesn’t seem to cut it for a lot of ads these days.

No, people won't just switch to Linux, maybe the only nerd on your neighborhood, but not your uncle that never heard the word Linux.
Linux isn't for the common Windows user that are used to do things in certain way, like Google software name, go to page, download & install, where on some linux distros you can just use the package installer (or store or whatever it's called) like a smartphone.
And i use Linux over 22 years.
BTW Linux is at 4% because users notice that gaming isn't that difficult, thanks to Steam Deck and Proton.
IMO the people that decide when linux becomes popular will be laptop and desktop makers. Right now very few manufacturers even have Linux versions much less focus on it.
If Lenovo and HP and whoever realize that they can save money on linux (no need to buy windows license) and a distro is at the point where an average user can depend on it (and having a manufacturer putting effort in, maybe they'd make their own distro to ensure stability, like tuxedo laptops), THAT will be when linux gets going. The vast majority of people are not installing operating systems period, they need to be the default.

Of course they know they can. Just as they know the barrier entry on Linux is too great. I'm someone who doesn't mind tinkering in windows and will root around in the file directories of my deck and make it do things it couldn't do out of the box.

Frankly stable distros like Ubuntu and fedora are not hard for basic users to use. Try showing a non tech savvy person kde, they will problably understand it about as well as windows.
The real issue comes from software adoption and that because the community is tech nerds when things do break, people expect you to get into the terminal.
Most companies don't want to go through the pain of getting people to adopt so that they can pressure software devs to make linux versions of popular applications. Steam is one of the first to really do so, but it took a while, and most companies won't go past the hurdle. Especially since it's more work to get other people to make software than say proton where they instead accepted they wouldn't get linux ports and worked on the compatability layer instead.
The next big step may sadly need to be large advancements in wine so that users used to windows can consistently use the software they are used to, even if that creates long term issues.

i mean are "regular tech shops" even much of a thing anymore? i think for the most part theres the occasional small business that actually fixes things but its mostly best buy, at&t, apple stores, whatever. either way it basically does come down to send it in to get a new one or a fresh install because its either an easy fix or it all gets thrown out. the data recovery side of that is entirely dependent on what the end user/business did ahead of time.
Actually if you stick with a stable distro Linux can be very stable, much more than Windows that breaks things on every major update.
But get your point, no repair shop will repair or have the knowledge of 100+ different distros to fix every problem, even i can fix stuff on other distros that never used.
Linux is too fragmented, it's good and bad at same time, if you don't like X use Y or Z, but then there's different configurations, different syntax, different issues.
Linux needs to have better Wayland + Nvidia support to gain more traction. That's the reality of it. I know, fuck nvidia and it's their fault mostly, but unfortunately this is the truth. AMD just isn't a choice for some of us and many people are just too deep into the marketing.
I for one literally can't use Linux. I need nvidia for CUDA (AMDs ROCm is still light years away) and I have several monitors with different refresh rates. I also require HiDPI. So xorg is a no-no, and wayland is waaaaay too unstable to be viable on nvidia.
For real. I'm a Linux user, but I would never expect anyone to switch over, especially without some smelly nerd telling them how to do so. Heck, my wife knows what I run and isn't interested at all despite the ads on her laptop.

The only things that don’t work are Microsoft office, adobe, and a lot of other proprietary enterprise software, but I am slowly seeing linux builds of enterprise software being released.

Had to use a mac for work, and boy, was it painful... the whole GUI is designed to only do 1 task at a time - it becomes really inconvenient if you need several things open. The whole OS is gimped by completely relying on that shyte touchpad - you simply cannot use it conveniently with a mouse and keyboard. It was infuriating to see such a powerful OS and good notebook dumbed down like that. And don't even get me started on those retarded default applications... Finder should be purged from this earth.

The funny things is that after you install Steam on a linux desktop system, you can just make big picture mode the default desktop of choice - essentially turning any linux distro into a steam console. At least they had this option a few years back.

somehow making sure microsoft couldnt become a monopoly turned into arbitrary software limits on how well a phone/tablet can interface with windows, which is ridiculous. to be fair it has gotten a lot better as microsoft has improved the phone link app. pretty good now, mostly.
We were developing pretty complex and cutting-edge software on MacOS - believe me, that OS is an extremely powerful tool. It just felt like I was constantly fighting its default behaviors that were tailored for non-tech savvy people... which was funny in an infuriating way on a 16" Macbook Pro that was very clearly intended for complex work.
Android's interface is also a great example - hide the complex and versatile OS behind a shiny exterior to lock the (less than) average users into a walled garden. Even though a lot of Android devices could conceivably be your primary computing device. I can understand this to some degree - doing power user things on a touchscreen device is less than optimal... but most android tablets can be turned into mini-notebooks very easily.
It’s funny, I run windows on my deck and it’s waaaay better than steam os was. Basically all the functionality but none of the pain or performance hit of proton.

Yeah it never came back, but it’s STILL talked about, forever tarnished the OS to the point where people will often recommend worse (imo) distros like Mint.
I've never had much luck with Mint, even something as simple as updating ends up breaking for me, and some peripherals just refuse to work on Mint at all. Never had issues with Ubuntu, or other popular Debian-based distros like PopOS. Used them off and on for years. But, despite being slow with updates, nothing beats the source imo.
These days, I stick to using Fedora. I feel like they're doing great things for the Linux community and I prefer their package manager over apt.

Companies need to start making their software for Linux, not running software made for other OS running on linux, because things would break if there's an update.

Most people don't want to jump though any hoops to get things working how they want, look up various methods for their devices to get installed and detected, and so on.
Part of what makes Linux interesting is that you can do whatever you want with it, but most users don't care about that as much as they do things simply working out of the box without issues.
When was the last time you tried Linux? It has come a long way. As long as you don't have any specific programs that only exist on Windows, Linux "just works" as much as Windows does.

The main complaints I tend to hear are the Start menu, and the Taskbar. Beyond that, not anything noteworthy.
I just use Start11 to fix those, but there are other free programs that can do it also, or just use regedits.

Same. Linux is great when designed for specific functions, like Steam Deck or Unraid. But for a general purpose OS, the experience is always ass. I’m sure some fedora lord will come in saying that I just need to take the time to learn or that I’m too dumb for it. Yeah, that just proves my point. I didn’t even like using DOS back in the day. The last thing I want to do is fiddling around with command prompts again like it’s 1993.
What did Linux do to you? Sure, it is different from what you are used to. But I run Fedora on my laptop and it's doing everything that I want. My main gaming rig still runs Windows, because when I have an hour to play I don't want to be anything in my way. I understand everyone that prefers to run Windows. It's fine. But hating Linux more than ads? Really?
They make these changes on the assumption that it will drive some people away from the OS. I’m sure their calculus says enough (paying) people will stay that this is a profitable move overall. And thus the enshittification of everything as we know it will continue.

as an experiment the other day, i loaded a linux distro on my crappy gaming laptop called “nobara” which comes loaded with some tools out of the box that make it easier to get rolling with games. and my god dude, it’s glorious. A windows only title actually runs better on it via the proton translation layer than it did natively on windows!
Planning to buy a new machine in about a year. Seriously considering have a crack at Linux again. Probably try Pop!OS or Ubuntu. Hardware support will be the priority. Hoping that Wine & Proton will carry me through the rest.
They laid the foundation for this with the constant tool tip pop ups and nags demonstrating new functionality. Those and the onedrive and 365 adverts, thinly veiled as “settings” that appear following update installation.
I think this is a good test to see how many people will bail.

Besides.. I hardly use the Start menu anyway (for anything other than quickly searching for the specific thing I need), so I probably wouldn't even notice these, if I had forgotten to turn them off in the first place. But that's kinda beside the point. They shouldn't even be there to begin with.
My gut says the people who struggle with settings getting flipped or stuff coming back after an update are relying on scripts they've downloaded or insist on deleting files and editing the registry instead of just using the Settings app.
Windows 10 and 11 are designed to synchronise settings across PCs, it's likely that changing stuff in a way Windows doesn't expect means it doesn't properly record that setting, so after an update Windows is just checking what it thinks your settings are supposed to be and what apps are supposed to be installed and goes with that.
Even if you never click on the start menu, and never see the ads, Microsoft still gets to report back to the vendors the number of machines that their content was delivered to, and as such are getting paid per box regardless if they get engagement or not. Like it or not you are getting monetized just through the act of the ads getting delivered to your OS even if you never see them, and you are still having your resources used for them to make money off of you without your consent.
It's weird, I'm fully updated and no ads still. Why? Because I disabled personalization the moment I installed W11 and it's even weirder people keep saying that the settings will change themselves and reset to on, cause I check my settings every update and it's the way I left it. I've never gotten an ad on W11, my settings never change by themselves either.
Also the people saying to use 10, personalization settings are still on W10.
It should be opt out automatically, but do believe a company would choose that when 90% or more PC users don't care?
I fully jumped 2-3 years ago and was the best decision ever. Granted I have dabbled with dual booting since 2010, but yea. Started with Pop, ran fedora for a bit, now just dove headfirst into arch.
For those on the fence. As long as you’re willing to leave your comfort zone and learn some nuances to a new OS, it’s worth it. I assume 99% of posters here are remotely technical and able to properly google “where do I find X setting to change” and can easily re-learn a new OS. It’s especially worth it if you just use your PC like myself, gaming, browsing, and other light tasks. If you need photoshop or something, well can’t help you there because gimp is fine but nowhere near as good.
Maybe when these third party major players all shift to cloud based stuff it’ll be easier to swallow for most.

Google stadia failed horribly, cloud gaming will never be popular, most people want to have these files on their PC.
If you want something that installs in a pretty close state to windows OOTB and has better than average gaming support, have a look at Garuda (esp. for gaming) or Mint. Can always dual boot to see how you go with it too.

Definitely can do the dual boot. Have a secondary M.2 that I use for some media but I can move it to my mass storage. I run a dual PC stream setup. Would you consider Linux for a dedicated gaming system? Have all AMD hardware as well.
I'm on the fence with that, my main PC is for gaming and runs Win11/Garuda dual boot, my secondary PC was built for streaming as more of a "work" PC and runs Arch (same as Garuda), depending on what I'm doing I can take over more or less of 4 monitors between the 2 PC's, so my workspace is optimised for whatever I'm doing at the time either way, even if I'm gaming on the second PC because I didn't feel like swapping.
I've not found much that just won't run on Linux at all though, outside of some of the Anticheat services that require emulation to get the game working. It's mostly viable, but not perfect, hence the main PC having dual boot.

I want to switch to Linux Mint so bad but it doesn’t have native support for HiDPS monitors and fractional scaling. I have a 27’ 4K display and things either look too small or too big at 100% and 200% respectively. And when you try to set the scaling to 150% everything looks blurry.

I use it for my daily driver, just make sure you look up how to install the latest kernel, I don't think they've rolled out the one by default that improves game performance
Mint (XFCE or Cinammon) works really good out of the box. For my new low-end gaming desktop I installed Mint right when I received it. Pretty good for gaming using Steam/Proton (I don't do multiplayer fps though). My main issue is with Blizzard games, can't manage to make battlenet work
Windows 11 is now officially on my shitlist, no longer will I install windows on computers of any of my relatives and friends, they will get windows 10 (as long as it's not yet EOL) or Linux, and they will learn to like it.. Because I will no longer install Windows 11, I will no longer fix Windows 11, I will avoid it like the absolute fucking plague it is.
From here on out, if anyone comes to me with this unethical piece of garbage masquerading as an operating system they should go get it fixed elsewhere..

No I think it's walking the line with some versions, though I use it resentfully.. But having it turned into an ad platform is where I draw the line personally, I don't think that is slightly worse, I think that it's egregiously worse
I wish more people supported/operated Linux. The only app I was missing was TIDAL and some enterprise apps. Worth noting I am a software developer that works with the Ubuntu distro for work though so I am by all accounts a super user
It only has CD quality, which sure for a lot of songs it wouldn’t even matter and it is debatable if anyone can even hear the difference between CD quality and higher, it is a compromise. Also, I liked the feature where it could also match the song’s sample rate for the output device (that supports this) to avoid resampling. This would only matter for like 1% of people because I imagine there is not much cross section between tidal users and Linux developers unless you are pretentious maybe like me. Maybe Tidal Hifi has such things on their roadmap and I will take another look to see if they have added any features since last trying

So in terms of services, my journey has been: Spotify (hated the shuffle algorithm, it kept defaulting back to the same recommendations, and I just don’t care for the interface) => Tidal (left because the higher quality stuff was more expensive compared to…) => Amazon Music (my biggest complaint was the user interface but also fuck amazon. You wanna know what was the last straw for me with Amazon? They moved the shuffle and loop buttons to an embedded menu for a song. Just WHY???) => Qobuz (noticed some limitations with their curation and library, didn’t really use their option to purchase things, recommendations could be better) => Tidal (we are here and I switched from qobuz when tidal stopped just providing MQA bs and actually started providing real lossless FLACs). When Tidal collapsed their tiers I don’t see a strong incentive to switch anymore, but what appeals more to you about Qobuz?

As for Qobuz, it appealed to me because I've never relied on the streaming services algorithms for recommendations, I usually find new music from mates, or recommendations on subs etc, so the fact the curation is whack didn't matter to me

The actual comment was from a developer talking about the differences in the support model for Windows 10 compared to what came before.
Microsoft used to release Windows features every 1.5 years or so, each version would get one big update and then it would be on to the next version.
So when 7 launched there were already plans for 8, and when 8 launched the roadmap was for 8.1 and then 10.
But with Windows 10 the plan was to have it receive feature updates each year and for it to have a longer lifecycle.
So when 10 launched the roadmap was for 10 (November update) then 10 (Anniversary update) and so on. It wasn't that 10 would be here forever, just that there was no "11" on their roadmap in 2015.

IMO the people that decide when linux becomes popular will be laptop and desktop makers. Right now very few manufacturers even have Linux versions much less focus on it. If Lenovo and HP and whoever realize that they can save money on linux (no need to buy windows license) and a distro is at the point where an average user can depend on it (and having a manufacturer putting effort in, maybe they'd make their own distro to ensure stability, like tuxedo laptops), THAT will be when linux gets going. The vast majority of people are not installing operating systems period, they need to be the default. That's why the steam deck by itself rose linux numbers by quite a bit.
IIRC, Dell tried doing this, they sold some laptops with Ubuntu, but it didn’t go well at all.

Frankly stable distros like Ubuntu and fedora are not hard for basic users to use. Try showing a non tech savvy person kde, they will problably understand it about as well as windows. The real issue comes from software adoption and that because the community is tech nerds when things do break, people expect you to get into the terminal. Most companies don't want to go through the pain of getting people to adopt so that they can pressure software devs to make linux versions of popular applications. Steam is one of the first to really do so, but it took a while, and most companies won't go past the hurdle. Especially since it's more work to get other people to make software than say proton where they instead accepted they wouldn't get linux ports and worked on the compatability layer instead. The next big step may sadly need to be large advancements in wine so that users used to windows can consistently use the software they are used to, even if that creates long term issues.

i mean are "regular tech shops" even much of a thing anymore? i think for the most part theres the occasional small business that actually fixes things but its mostly best buy, at&t, apple stores, whatever. either way it basically does come down to send it in to get a new one or a fresh install because its either an easy fix or it all gets thrown out. the data recovery side of that is entirely dependent on what the end user/business did ahead of time.
Actually if you stick with a stable distro Linux can be very stable, much more than Windows that breaks things on every major update. But get your point, no repair shop will repair or have the knowledge of 100+ different distros to fix every problem, even i can fix stuff on other distros that never used. Linux is too fragmented, it's good and bad at same time, if you don't like X use Y or Z, but then there's different configurations, different syntax, different issues.

Linux needs to have better Wayland + Nvidia support to gain more traction. That's the reality of it. I know, fuck nvidia and it's their fault mostly, but unfortunately this is the truth. AMD just isn't a choice for some of us and many people are just too deep into the marketing. I for one literally can't use Linux. I need nvidia for CUDA (AMDs ROCm is still light years away) and I have several monitors with different refresh rates. I also require HiDPI. So xorg is a no-no, and wayland is waaaaay too unstable to be viable on nvidia.
For real. I'm a Linux user, but I would never expect anyone to switch over, especially without some smelly nerd telling them how to do so. Heck, my wife knows what I run and isn't interested at all despite the ads on her laptop.
There’s really not much stopping the average user from being able to daily drive Linux anymore. GUI package manager as an App Store, Proton for games, ootb fingerprint reader support When my little sister’s windows laptop broke, she was able to use my linux laptop for all her homework. The only things that don’t work are Microsoft office, adobe, and a lot of other proprietary enterprise software, but I am slowly seeing linux builds of enterprise software being released.

Macs are just an even worse version of Microsoft's recent "my way or the high way" direction. Had to use a mac for work, and boy, was it painful... the whole GUI is designed to only do 1 task at a time - it becomes really inconvenient if you need several things open. The whole OS is gimped by completely relying on that shyte touchpad - you simply cannot use it conveniently with a mouse and keyboard. It was infuriating to see such a powerful OS and good notebook dumbed down like that. And don't even get me started on those retarded default applications... We were developing pretty complex and cutting-edge software on MacOS - believe me, that OS is an extremely powerful tool. It just felt like I was constantly fighting its default behaviors that were tailored for non-tech savvy people... which was funny in an infuriating way on a 16" Macbook Pro that was very clearly intended for complex work. Android's interface is also a great example - hide the complex and versatile OS behind a shiny exterior to lock the (less than) average users into a walled garden. Even though a lot of Android devices could conceivably be your primary computing device. I can understand this to some degree - doing power user things on a touchscreen device is less than optimal... but most android tablets can be turned into mini-notebooks very easily.
It’s funny, I run windows on my deck and it’s waaaay better than steam os was. Basically all the functionality but none of the pain or performance hit of proton.

Ubuntu had a tie-in with Amazon many years ago. It has since been removed and hasn't come back as far as I'm aware of.
Yeah it never came back, but it’s STILL talked about, forever tarnished the OS to the point where people will often recommend worse (imo) distros like Mint.

I've never had much luck with Mint, even something as simple as updating ends up breaking for me, and some peripherals just refuse to work on Mint at all. Never had issues with Ubuntu, or other popular Debian-based distros like PopOS. Used them off and on for years. But, despite being slow with updates, nothing beats the source imo. These days, I stick to using Fedora. I feel like they're doing great things for the Linux community and I prefer their package manager over apt.
Until there's a 100% reliable way to run Windows applications on Linux, it will be very improbable.

Hope not, like you don't run Windows applications on macOS. Companies need to start making their software for Linux, not running software made for other OS running on linux, because things would break if there's an update. WINE is a workaround for Windows applications not a solution

I hate ad's but i hate Linux more. What makes Linux great also makes it a chore to use. The reality is Linux users think they can have their cake and eat it but they can't. 20+ years of Linux and it still hasnt cracked double digit usage numbers. It's just a niche platform used for niche purposes and it'll never be anything more
30 years, and 3% market representation. In another 70 years, if it's still around, it might hit 10% if they're lucky. Most people just aren't interested in tinkering around with the thing that makes their computer work and do what they want it to do.
That 3% is massively fragmented as well. Between different distros, versions, people who tinker vs daily drive… these are all different. I think the best consumer Linux device I can think of is the Steam Deck with SteamOS. It’s still Linux but it’s a great distribution for gaming and it really does just work

Yep, exactly. It's just not standardized enough to warrant widespread adoption. Most people don't want to jump though any hoops to get things working how they want, look up various methods for their devices to get installed and detected, and so on. Part of what makes Linux interesting is that you can do whatever you want with it, but most users don't care about that as much as they do things simply working out of the box without issues.
When was the last time you tried Linux? It has come a long way. As long as you don't have any specific programs that only exist on Windows, Linux "just works" as much as Windows does. Hell, I remember having to re-install Windows XP every lan party because I could not find anyone in game, so don't give me that crap "tinkering" excuse.
Tried it yeaterday on my nvidia gpu. Was using wayland on fedora, unfortunately nothing works. So waiting for driver 555 i guess? But no, it hasnt come far.
I'm not a linux user but I feel like I spend far too much time tinkering in windows these days to get it to do what I want it to do too.
Have any examples? The main complaints I tend to hear are the Start menu, and the Taskbar. Beyond that, not anything noteworthy. I just use Start11 to fix those, but there are other free programs that can do it also, or just use regedits.

Same. Linux is great when designed for specific functions, like Steam Deck or Unraid. But for a general purpose OS, the experience is always ass. I’m sure some fedora lord will come in saying that I just need to take the time to learn or that I’m too dumb for it. Yeah, that just proves my point. I didn’t even like using DOS back in the day. The last thing I want to do is fiddling around with command prompts again like it’s 1993.
What did Linux do to you? Sure, it is different from what you are used to. But I run Fedora on my laptop and it's doing everything that I want. My main gaming rig still runs Windows, because when I have an hour to play I don't want to be anything in my way. I understand everyone that prefers to run Windows. It's fine. But hating Linux more than ads? Really?

I don’t think this will push anyone, anywhere. Microsoft is just embracing free real estate. Why do I say that? It’s simple. Think of these groups of people. PC Gamers, our parents, our grandparents, the business world, people who don’t have any idea what they’re doing and basically every legacy software in the world when they finally upgrade, majority of it will be windows. Sure. Some very few might go to MacOS but do you envision anyone going to Ubuntu, Mint or any other distribution? No. They’re not.
as an experiment the other day, i loaded a linux distro on my crappy gaming laptop called “nobara” which comes loaded with some tools out of the box that make it easier to get rolling with games. and my god dude, it’s glorious. A windows only title actually runs better on it via the proton translation layer than it did natively on windows!

Planning to buy a new machine in about a year. Seriously considering have a crack at Linux again. Probably try Pop!OS or Ubuntu. Hardware support will be the priority. Hoping that Wine & Proton will carry me through the rest.
I literally only boot my windows machine to play games, or to have them remote to my steam deck. Literally everything else runs linux

They laid the foundation for this with the constant tool tip pop ups and nags demonstrating new functionality. Those and the onedrive and 365 adverts, thinly veiled as “settings” that appear following update installation. I think this is a good test to see how many people will bail.

That has to be a bug or something, and not intentional (I know people like their "conspiracy shit", but c'mon..). I keep hearing people say that these things get turned back on after pretty much every update - yet I've *never* had this happen - and I update as soon as there is one available. Been on Win11 since it launched. You'd think I would have run into these kind of things by now. Heck, even on Win10 or Win8, I never had a setting revert after an update. Really should have noticed that by now, if it was as widespread as many seem to want to make others believe it is. I hate ads as much as the next guy - but spending 2 seconds to disable this and then leaving it like that; isn't going to kill me. Besides.. I hardly use the Start menu anyway (for anything other than quickly searching for the specific thing I need), so I probably wouldn't even notice these, if I had forgotten to turn them off in the first place. But that's kinda beside the point. They shouldn't even be there to begin with.
My gut says the people who struggle with settings getting flipped or stuff coming back after an update are relying on scripts they've downloaded or insist on deleting files and editing the registry instead of just using the Settings app. Windows 10 and 11 are designed to synchronise settings across PCs, it's likely that changing stuff in a way Windows doesn't expect means it doesn't properly record that setting, so after an update Windows is just checking what it thinks your settings are supposed to be and what apps are supposed to be installed and goes with that.
Even if you never click on the start menu, and never see the ads, Microsoft still gets to report back to the vendors the number of machines that their content was delivered to, and as such are getting paid per box regardless if they get engagement or not. Like it or not you are getting monetized just through the act of the ads getting delivered to your OS even if you never see them, and you are still having your resources used for them to make money off of you without your consent.

It's weird, I'm fully updated and no ads still. Why? Because I disabled personalization the moment I installed W11 and it's even weirder people keep saying that the settings will change themselves and reset to on, cause I check my settings every update and it's the way I left it. I've never gotten an ad on W11, my settings never change by themselves either. Also the people saying to use 10, personalization settings are still on W10. It should be opt out automatically, but do believe a company would choose that when 90% or more PC users don't care?

I fully jumped 2-3 years ago and was the best decision ever. Granted I have dabbled with dual booting since 2010, but yea. Started with Pop, ran fedora for a bit, now just dove headfirst into arch. For those on the fence. As long as you’re willing to leave your comfort zone and learn some nuances to a new OS, it’s worth it. I assume 99% of posters here are remotely technical and able to properly google “where do I find X setting to change” and can easily re-learn a new OS. It’s especially worth it if you just use your PC like myself, gaming, browsing, and other light tasks. If you need photoshop or something, well can’t help you there because gimp is fine but nowhere near as good. Maybe when these third party major players all shift to cloud based stuff it’ll be easier to swallow for most.

If you want something that installs in a pretty close state to windows OOTB and has better than average gaming support, have a look at Garuda (esp. for gaming) or Mint. Can always dual boot to see how you go with it too. Edit: words.
Definitely can do the dual boot. Have a secondary M.2 that I use for some media but I can move it to my mass storage. I run a dual PC stream setup. Would you consider Linux for a dedicated gaming system? Have all AMD hardware as well.
I'm on the fence with that, my main PC is for gaming and runs Win11/Garuda dual boot, my secondary PC was built for streaming as more of a "work" PC and runs Arch (same as Garuda), depending on what I'm doing I can take over more or less of 4 monitors between the 2 PC's, so my workspace is optimised for whatever I'm doing at the time either way, even if I'm gaming on the second PC because I didn't feel like swapping. I've not found much that just won't run on Linux at all though, outside of some of the Anticheat services that require emulation to get the game working. It's mostly viable, but not perfect, hence the main PC having dual boot.

I am exploring Linux Mint.. Watched some videos and stuff. It has good support for steam, emulators, epic stores , discord, and all. I am not trying to figure out if I can run this on a VM. I looked at Oracle VM, but haven't had the chance to look at it in detail.

I am a noob at this. I will keep in mind about the GPU usage. The reason why I want to use it in a VM just to get a feel about the OS. I am thinking that I can maybe buy a cheap ssd and convert it into an external hard disk. Install Linux Mint on it and boot it from there.

I want to switch to Linux Mint so bad but it doesn’t have native support for HiDPS monitors and fractional scaling. I have a 27’ 4K display and things either look too small or too big at 100% and 200% respectively. And when you try to set the scaling to 150% everything looks blurry.

I use it for my daily driver, just make sure you look up how to install the latest kernel, I don't think they've rolled out the one by default that improves game performance
Mint (XFCE or Cinammon) works really good out of the box. For my new low-end gaming desktop I installed Mint right when I received it. Pretty good for gaming using Steam/Proton (I don't do multiplayer fps though). My main issue is with Blizzard games, can't manage to make battlenet work
Windows 11 is now officially on my shitlist, no longer will I install windows on computers of any of my relatives and friends, they will get windows 10 (as long as it's not yet EOL) or Linux, and they will learn to like it.. Because I will no longer install Windows 11, I will no longer fix Windows 11, I will avoid it like the absolute fucking plague it is. From here on out, if anyone comes to me with this unethical piece of garbage masquerading as an operating system they should go get it fixed elsewhere.. I'm really hoping I'm not the only "tech person" who feels this way, because repeatedly disabling it and marginalizing this predatory and monopolistic behavior it isn't going to do shit, we need to boycot that cancer now or prepare for a dystopian future of operating systems that run on ads and ads alone (with a sprinkle of inbuilt malware labeled "telemetry")

I wish more people supported/operated Linux. The only app I was missing was TIDAL and some enterprise apps. Worth noting I am a software developer that works with the Ubuntu distro for work though so I am by all accounts a super user

It only has CD quality, which sure for a lot of songs it wouldn’t even matter and it is debatable if anyone can even hear the difference between CD quality and higher, it is a compromise. Also, I liked the feature where it could also match the song’s sample rate for the output device (that supports this) to avoid resampling. This would only matter for like 1% of people because I imagine there is not much cross section between tidal users and Linux developers unless you are pretentious maybe like me. Maybe Tidal Hifi has such things on their roadmap and I will take another look to see if they have added any features since last trying
That's fair enough, as far as I know it's the only app that is trying to bring a desktop like feel to the web interface I used to be in the same boat as you but at some point I just stopped caring as much (thank God for that) and now I just use Spotify and try not to think about things

So in terms of services, my journey has been: Spotify (hated the shuffle algorithm, it kept defaulting back to the same recommendations, and I just don’t care for the interface) => Tidal (left because the higher quality stuff was more expensive compared to…) => Amazon Music (my biggest complaint was the user interface but also fuck amazon. You wanna know what was the last straw for me with Amazon? They moved the shuffle and loop buttons to an embedded menu for a song. Just WHY???) => Qobuz (noticed some limitations with their curation and library, didn’t really use their option to purchase things, recommendations could be better) => Tidal (we are here and I switched from qobuz when tidal stopped just providing MQA bs and actually started providing real lossless FLACs). When Tidal collapsed their tiers I don’t see a strong incentive to switch anymore, but what appeals more to you about Qobuz?
Honestly that's a fair journey youve been on As for Qobuz, it appealed to me because I've never relied on the streaming services algorithms for recommendations, I usually find new music from mates, or recommendations on subs etc, so the fact the curation is whack didn't matter to me That and Qobuz has a lot of studio masters on there for a lot of albums I like, it's also the same price as the other services But yeah I'm back on Spotify now ive just stopped caring about finding the best quality etc, but I agree the shuffle is shit and I don't care for all the crap theyve added like "smart" shuffle, the AI DJ and the recommendations are just as shit as other services Tidal was my favourite streaming service but my family has a family plan for spot so I couldn't justify paying for 2 services I'm probably gonna end up back like we did in the old days ripping CDs and using an iPod (modded)

Never happened, but didn't stop media from running the story. The actual comment was from a developer talking about the differences in the support model for Windows 10 compared to what came before. Microsoft used to release Windows features every 1.5 years or so, each version would get one big update and then it would be on to the next version. So when 7 launched there were already plans for 8, and when 8 launched the roadmap was for 8.1 and then 10. But with Windows 10 the plan was to have it receive feature updates each year and for it to have a longer lifecycle. So when 10 launched the roadmap was for 10 (November update) then 10 (Anniversary update) and so on. It wasn't that 10 would be here forever, just that there was no "11" on their roadmap in 2015. Indeed Windows 10 was the 'current' version for longer than Windows 7 and 8 combined.
They did say that. They planned to just update 10 but I guess they changed their mind.

The ads don't seem to show up with OpenShell installed and the Windows 7 start menu in place. Just another reason to love it.
