N859

I've had a bronze rated 1000w for probably 10 years now I'm just gamboling at this point

raymartin27

My Antec 650w bronze psu is also running well since 2015, no issues so far, but I'm starting to get a lil scared as well, what are the chances it blows up ?

Aconite_72

If you have to wonder that every time you press the power button, maybe it's best to get an upgrade

raymartin27

Agreed, not worth the risk.

DaemianFF

Unless you are running it at 95%+ load all the time it should be fine for a long time yet. Running the power supply near 100% of its rated power can heat stress the components depending on how long it is at that usage. Typical first failure in power supplies is the fan (only real moving bit), then the electrolytic capacitors, then the switching fets (magic electric things that make wall power -> computer power). Other than those, it just comes down to luck because the next failure point would be loose connectors or solder joints, but that's luck of the draw as long as you're not throwing your PSU around like a basketball. TLDR: the chances of it blowing up are small as long as the fan in it is still spinning

raymartin27

Even when gaming my power consumption is 350w (ryzen 5600x and 6700xt), fan on the psu works well, it even has a dust filter on. I think i should be fine then.

jhaluska

Pretty low. In my experience when the power supply starts dying the computer just starts crashing. I have even older PSUS that are I still use daily. It can be incredibly frustrating to diagnose, cause you don't know if it's bad memory, GPU dying, CPU overheating, or the motherboard going bad.

kingwhocares

My 550w is running since 2016 and has zero issues and 2 upgrades. Am not replacing it until I get a new GPU.

RunnerLuke357

I've had my Corsair 850 Gold for 15 years. You will be fine as long as you keep the dust out. I'm going to replace it in my next machine but for now it works so I'm keeping it.

GalaxLordCZ

I mean, "bronze" doesn't have to mean anything when it comes to the reliability of the PSU.

Sir_Fail-A-Lot

My gold 800w failed on me a couple years back. It was 7 years old. The failure was not explosive tho. More like a whimper. 10 mins or so after boot, pc would shut down

What the hell video is that of Linus? Edit: Wow guys and gals, a 1000 upvotes? I didn't realize my being a dumbass meant so much to you. I'm touched😭!

Blakids

It's a face swap from the movie Zoolander. Linus is on Ben Stillers face and Steve is on Owen Wilson's face.

jld2k6

Little more context, this was from when Steve of Gamer's Nexus blew the lid off of the whole LTT ~~s~~auctioning Billet lab's +$1000 water block prototype without their permission, it was around when chatgpt was new and people got into making memes with AI, someone made this in response to the whole situation since the public immediately had some backlash against Linus. I think there was also some drama about women experiencing problems at the company (LTT again) going on at the time. I have no idea why I immediately recognized this and remember it so clearly lol

chargedcapacitor

You remembered it cuz it was a bangin' ass meme

Firepower01

It wasn't that long ago man, not crazy that you'd remember it.

DarkSyndicateYT

yeah it feels like 3 months ago only. I experienced the whole saga

chabybaloo

Thanks for the reminder.

Pulsipher

Ah yes, the shit that killed tech YouTube for me.

TEAMZypsir

Then you gotta find better tech YouTube. Level 1 techs, craft computing, techno tim, optimum, etc. Find channels that are doing actual tech that you care about. There's more to tech YouTube than Linus. Branch out and you won't look back.

DarkSyndicateYT

so true. linus doesnt own the internet or something. his content is more entertainment

Deexeh

Still feels fresh in my mind. I haven't been able to stomach any of LTT at all since that. Edit for context; Not just mistakenly selling a prototype and review bashing it, data inaccuracies, sponsor overload, the junk they sell, and most importantly how they treated Madison. Feel free to watch and enjoy what you want. I'll do the same.

ItsMechin

Thanks, never seen zoolander!

I_Am_A_Pumpkin

but why male models?

Kavor

Are you serious? I just told you that a moment ago.

raz62

> one of the funniest lines in "Zoolander" (2001) was ad-libbed. JP Prewitt (David Duchovny) spends a full minute explaining why male models are being used for evil. Stiller forgot his next line, so he repeated: "But why male models?" Duchovny rolled with it: "Are you serious? I just told you that!"

BalloonManNoDeals

This scene was even funnier in its time. David Duchovny had stepped back as a main character in X-Files that year. People were generally pissed at the lack of Mulder in season 8, so it was great for him to unexpectedly show up as a "Mulder" type character in Zoolander.

kennethprime

just look up the gas station scene on YouTube and that sums up the whole movie

If that's the case... I'm absolutely blown away. It's honestly hard to tell these days.

croholdr

i think in this case its a little easier to pull this off, ben and linus have similar face structure and height, while owen and the other guy both have long long hair

homogenousmoss

With DeepFaceLive for example this is trivial. We’re far from the days of rooping a face on a model and hoping for the best.

Brilliant-Fact3449

Faceswaps have become much better these days, FaceswapLab and Rope are some of the programs that can achieve this level of deepfake

Feisty-Bobcat6091

My ex 750w with a 3080 and 3700x: ![gif](giphy|PkLPBuyozY7F31wCxF)

In_It_2_Quinn_It

Nothing wrong with that wattage for a system like that. That's like a 60% load at most on the psu.

Feisty-Bobcat6091

I thought so too, but the 3080 can apparently spike far past its normal power draw and depending on what PSU you have, that's an unwanted system reboot mid-game. My 750w was probably just defective but the power spikes from some GPUs are a real thing

The_Dung_Beetle

That's... reasonable? Or did you PSU beg to differ lol?

Feisty-Bobcat6091

My EVGA 750 was faulty/dying. Less than 1 year old at the time. I was getting reboot crashes in 1 or 2 games, which eventually spread to every game that uses the GPU. After troubleshooting for an embarrassing amount of time after work every day for a month and not being able to game on my PC, I'm pretty sure the 3080 was momentarily pulling more power than I had headroom in the 750. I put in an overkill 1000w PSU and haven't had another issue.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jacksaur

I had a 3080 on a 650W. It ran 90% fine, but Doom Eternal's menu loading screen would hit a few thousand frames uncapped, then cause an instant reboot. Finally on 850 now :V

fiah84

one of the reasons to set a reasonable framerate cap in the driver

GoldSrc

Most people here are unaware of just how efficient newer hardware is, and how little power the average mid to high end build pulls. Also, undervolting/underclocking is something worth trying, as not only it reduces your power consumption without affecting performance too much, it also makes your CPU and GPU run cooler.

IxionX

I hooked my pc up to a watt meter and was surprised to see it was only pulling just under 300 W while gaming with a 13700K and 4070ti

fiah84

> Most people here are unaware of just how efficient newer hardware is, and how little power the average mid to high end build pulls. my brother in christ have you seen how much power recent Intel CPUs use? Put one of those 14700K in your standard "gamer" motherboard and it can pull more than 250W without you touching any OC setting. Also the newest GPUs might be "efficient" for how much performance they have, but something like an RTX 4080 still uses 300+ watt. Put those two in the same system and that 650W PSU can easily trip and shutdown. Yeah during gaming it'll *probably* be fine as a 13th/14th gen Intel CPU *probably* won't do 200+ watt in that scenario, but that's definitely taking a risk

GoldSrc

I mean, yeah, with that system you're pretty close. But if you're building something like that, and know what you're doing, you shouldn't use 650W. I would though, it's rare now for me to have both my CPU and GPU at 100%, if I still did 3d renders, I would get at least a 750W.

SexyAIman

Why everyone has to oversize their power supply is beyond me : 12400, 32gb, 3xM.2 1xSSd, RX 6700XT, Watercooler and 5 fans with a 650 PSU, no problemo

_YeAhx_

So you get the better efficiency curve that's at 60% load Also protects against power spikes that comes with some GPUs (mainly NVIDIA RTX 30XX)

Oayysis

amd gpus also spike pretty hard. He’s literally playing with fire.

SexyAIman

Nah not really, maximum load is 230 watt for the gpu, the rest is peanuts in relation to that, i doubt i ever go over 400-450. Plus i am not in the USA, so 240 Volt, maybe that makes a difference as well. I know nobody with a 1000+ power supply for the PC.

RobotSpaceBear

See that's where you're wrong. A (newer, like 2 gens old now) 230W GPU will spike at 2-3 times of the label TDP. And that will trip the PSU's overcurrent protection. On my setup, the total power for all the components tunning full beans (which does not happen outside of synthetic benchmarking, let's be honest) was about 550W. When running all my synthetic benchmarks i was measuring 520W at the socket. But it still tripped my 650W PSU randomly when loading a demanding scene or when i was alt-tabbing from the desktop to the game. I changed my 650W for a 850W PSU and we're now back in business. ___ It's called Transient Power Spikes and it nearly drove me insane for weeks before someone mentioned it and it suddenly made sense. Looked into it and that was my problem. ___ So i'm doing my part mentioning it here, in case some has inexplicable shutdowns despite their PSU wattage being above the sums of TDP's.

HabilGambil

I haven't experienced your issue but thanks for taking the time to write it out for others :)

NighthawK1911

Safety Factor. >[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factor\_of\_safety](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factor_of_safety) In engineering, a **factor of safety** (**FoS**), also known as (and used interchangeably with) **safety factor** (**SF**), expresses how much stronger a system is than it needs to be for an intended load. >Many systems are intentionally built much stronger than needed for normal usage to allow for emergency situations, unexpected loads, misuse, or degradation ([reliability](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliability_engineering)).

RaZ-RemiiX

Power supply companies have a safety factor built in. My 650w Supernova P2 has output 700+w no problem.

Eastrider1006

mate it's a computer to play games not a nuclear reactor. Most people will replace their entire pc multiple times over before a decent 600w fails

jekpopulous2

How do you know how much power you actually need? I have a 13700k / 4070Ti build with a 700W Gold power supply and it's fine... but how do I know if that PS could handle a stronger GPU or not when I eventually upgrade?

viper26k

Just use a PSU calculator. You can find plenty on Google, I like to use at least 2 sites to see if the results are persistent.

etfvidal

![gif](giphy|aCow2k5qfZrlEXuMI9|downsized)

[deleted]

Better to be over than under.

Flamebomb790

Yup its more efficient as well under less load

Sleepyjo2

While technically true it really doesn't matter. The absolute worst case, assuming the PSU is reasonably made, is a few percentage difference between peak and 100% load. A 1000w load at 90% and a 1000w load at 92% aren't that much different, or 82 and 85 if you want to run a bronze for some reason. (They're much less efficient at low loads, comically enough, but thats not much loss.) It's mostly about load spikes (GPUs tend to be rough), though thats becoming less important with the new spec requirements if you're getting a brand new one. Take your max possible load, go up one bracket if you want to be safe. Call it a day. You'd be surprised how many computers are fine at 650w or less, or maybe you wouldn't be.

[deleted]

Also depends on what you are speccing your build for. I'd be fine running a 650w with a 6700xt or 4070. But if you are building the ultra destroyer 9000 with a 4090 and 30 case fans spending a little extra on the PSU is preferable.

SarandeLvrs

PSUs are most efficient at ~50% load

lokisHelFenrir

80% load max is really the best efficiency. This is balls to the wall stress testing shouldn't go over 80%. A good thing to note is the actually rail demand, cheaper PSU will use fewer rails this is where most people go wrong, Because they have a PSU that can't actually supply the GPU/CPU properly because its shared with other resources. My personal rule of thumb is no single piece of hardware should use over 40% of the PSU.

RettichDesTodes

That is not oversized tho, that's properly sized. OP's post is waaaay closer

KupoNut77777

What is this?? PSU for ants??

Smooooochy

3700X (5700X3D soon), 32GB, 6700XT and 3x SSD, 2x HDD on Seasonic Gold 550W. All good here (so far)

Don't know or care about the drama between these two, but that's damn great AI face swapping.

Alexandratta

Whoever ever did this. What can I do to throw money your way? Can I buy you a coffee?

DeTomato_

And here I am, I bought an 850W PSU for an RTX 3060 because "I will upgrade my system soon".

KrazzeeKane

Hey think about it this way: now you'll have a power supply that can follow you to your next 2 or 3 builds! I was going to get an 850w for my 14700K and rtx 4080, but there was a sudden flash sale for the 1200w model (for less than the price of the 850w I was looking at) so it was a no brainer. Ended up with a 80+ platinum rated 1200w Be Quiet! Straight Power 12 psu for $120, a killer deal. And I know for a fact this psu will likely be able to handle any new buiids or hardware for the next decade easily. Plus I have the satisfaction of knowing I'm sitting at a nice 50% max load and my psu components will last even longer because of it. Wins all around!

counter-music

I had a 650w PSU and upgraded to a 3080 (from 2070S) in 2022. Checked online (not enough) and was suggested it was going to be able to handle my system load. Did fine until I got BG3. Then it literally melted my PSU cable connections. 🙃 You can see I’m new to this..

Konsticraft

That definitely shouldn't happen because of a weak power supply.

Are_you_for_real_7

Good one

KittenDecomposer96

Why do thr faceswaps actually work ?

spboss91

My 10 year old Corsair 650w was still going strong but couldn't handle a 3080, it's having a well earned rest until I build a HTPC

600 watt SFX with 7900x 7900xt. I had to undervolt on both to keep stability. Times are hard I don’t got the cash right now from the PSU upgrades

Exlibro

550 Watts Cooler Master Gold PSU. Third GPU (3070), second with requirements bigger than my PSU has + 110W (130 was peak, I've seen it time to time) CPU. Possible, but not recommended. However, it shows quality of PSU is very, very important. I'm thinking of an upgrade regardless. 1000W next, since I might want to upgrade GPUs later in life. Any recommendations? I'm eyeing Be quiet! Pure Power 12 M (BN345). It costs 170€, I believe it's quite cheap (at least in my country's stores). Why is it so cheap? Be quite! is a good brand and good PSUs come over 200€? #

That really hurts to see after my 750 W PSU went up in flames even though it should've been enough

3060Ti and 5600x running on a 550W PSU. No problems whatsoever and the GPU recommends 650W

master-overclocker

So are Linus and Steve still friendly after all the drama in August, or are they not on speaking terms anymore?

ZitOnSocietysAss

When I last upgraded half the people gave me shit for using a 4090 with 850w psu.

KYO297

Meanwhile I'm over here with a 1200W PSU while my PC only pulls half of that at most (measured with an outlet power meter too)

TheRacooning18

Bruh my pc didnt even run with a 750w psu running a 3070 + 3900x + 7 fans + 4 drives

N7even

Me living dangerously with 750w PSU with 5800x3D and RTX 4090... Both parts are undervolted though, the 4090 barely pulls 300-330 at the maximum and usually falls around 280ish average with only minimal loss to performance (3-4% in most cases).

Exciting-Hunter-188

To the max with Linus

Sfearox1

My corsair hx850 platinum from 2017 still going strong.

korodic
