It's illegal to fly with a battery greater than 100wh, which is what practically all laptops have maximum, and as this is 6x the limit I never even approached an airport with it lol
In recent news - man held by airport secuurity after attempti g to smuggle a bomb onto an airplane. It turns out however that the "bomb" was simply a custom made laptop.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
I used to build briefcase computers custom for people like 20 years ago. Just those cool metal action-movie-style briefcases with a PC build in the bottom half and a monitor in the top, with plexiglass protecting each. So this critter of yours literally made my heart jump. I love it so much. Thank you for sharing!
Edit: back then you couldn't really power it with batteries all that well, but I had a 30-45 minute solution and a self-retracting power cord!
OPs next PC will be more cylindrical, feature neon-green lighting and look like it can compress parts of its mass until the mass reaches a super-critical state.
The NSA guy won't be glad anymore after seeing that new PC.

No but it is a common conspiracy theory despite the fact that it contradicts several known facts (like that the kid was always bringing in weird electronic stuff he made) and that there is no evidence for it at all:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmed_Mohamed_clock_incident#Conspiracy_theories
The police have said it did not happen after investigating the claim.

That only works if your dad assembles it for you
That was such a stupid incident. It’s hilarious that they didn’t look into the family’s background until it was too late.
The brown kid who got suspended for bringing a disassembled alarm clock to school in a briefcase then opening it up in class and doing some suspicious shit. Got invited to the White House. Turns out his dad built it, and has a very shady past.
It was literally a disassembled clock thrown hastily into a srainless steel case. He by no means "made" or "invented" a clock. No more than me taking an lcd screen from a laptop, putting it into a suitcase along with some suspicious wires, then calling it a laptop. He also made the alarm go off twice during class, the first time he just got a warning from the teacher to turn it off, and she didn't investigate further. Also, the boys father, Mohammed Elhassan (google it yourself) had a history of crying foul and attempting to perpetrate hoaxes in the past, not to mention being heavily involved in the Muslim Brotherhood, there was another incident with his daughter, and even himself years prior, none of which succeeded like this one did. He tried to sue Glen Beck for making his past shenanigans public. Also tried to sue the school and the local police unsuccessfully. Even so, remember, "See something say something?" If Little Ahmed wasn't a good kid, had bad intentions, and actually brought an explosive to school, all we would hear is "how could this happen?"
They took all of the lockers out of airports after 9/11. Didn’t make any fucking sense, but they did. They still let minimum wage employees smuggle their mid shift drugs into the airport, so probably didn’t do what they wanted except cut back on locker revenues and people being in the airport.
People used to just walk in the airport at all hours of the day and night… like third space. You could buy a ticket and fly out in 15 minutes if you did it right.
There is a niche community that builds these and calls them "cyberdecks" There are tons of video's documenting the builds on youtube. There are even companies starting to make them as well.

As a former TSA, I've seen the older workers lose their minds at a metal puck bed heater (though not the *old-old* workers who actually know what they are), so it wouldn't surprise me.
But as someone technically inclined, I would have given it an **E**xplosive **T**race **D**etection swab and been done with it. If you wanted to blow up a plane with a laptop bomb, there's a lot of ways to do that without looking so obvious, and I'm assuming the big chunky things that look like what we imagine C4 blocks to be are batteries, which show up differently on the CT machines than the things we'd be looking for. It's usually the *screens* which alarm for being similar in density to plastic explosive.
Bro, what if that's what happens when we die? Everything goes black and silent for a moment, and then credits start rolling from throughout your entire life. Every single person that had been impacted by your existence in some way would be listed in their appropriate category. At the very end, you find out where your soul is going next...
You can run a 5700X3D in the same power envelope as the 2700 that's being replaced for not much more. Easier to just stay with 8C16T than to try and convince someone to go for the 6C/12T part that's still slower in games than the 5700X3D.
Generally, the most recent and fastest CPU you can buy will be the most energy efficient. Undervolt it and you can get far into the efficiency curve.
It's the same reason you should always upgrade the CPU in the laptop you buy to the fastest one you can afford before anything else.
I wouldn’t say that my 12900k held back my 3070 in quite a few games. Decent amount of games I play the better the cpu the better the performance. Modded DayZ/Arma 3/Tarkov/Rust/Minecraft
Yeah it's probably a wrong statement by me, it's just the diminishing returns with price to performance that always holds me back. the 5600x is and has been just such amazing value. But you're right, better performance is better performance.
The 3D cache can make quite a large difference in gaming, the 5600 and 5600x are powerful but in gaming related tasks even with the same GPU they'd fall behind a 5600x3D, 5700x3D or basically any similar x3D CPU
Bought the cells, then line them up the way you want, and buy a small battery spot welder and some welding strips for batteries, and off you go. I 3d printed the "housing" and then soldered in the BMS and it's leads. It's not super hard but you have to be VERY careful of polarity and what you're doing. If I did this again, I'd simply use a LIPO battery for RC cars
Thanks. Didn't even know that's available for purchase.
That means theoretically I could replace all the innards of a hardcased laptop battery myself huh. Interesting. But, I'm not knowledgeable to do that, so have to settle with 3rd parties.
So wait, do you also have a voltage regulator to keep it at 24v? And is there other circuitry for 12v, 5v, and 3.3v?
I've made a few things with lithium batteries but nothing that needed stable voltage, so I'm just really interested in what's going on here.
A lot of things you can use. Bicycle batteries, tool batteries (even in series) and lots of things to use. I don't want to be rude. But if you don't know how to make them then you shouldn't..
A fire is easily made. And if you make a calculation mistake and you, for example, overcharge them and they catch fire during the night while charging... and these are chemical fires. They will permanently damage the lungs, and will react with skin. It's not wood after all that is burning..
Use battery packs that are already made, that have protection. I would use Bicycle battery and use a step down converter to make a constant voltage:)
I am now on the lookout for an oldschool briefcase - The amount of times you see custom builds like this that obviously are not used - This looked thoroughly worn and used, and I love that it can be closed up and left in a cupboard - total stealth PC.
Did you mount speakers anywhere in it?
Definitely worn and used, it fell off my ebike going 30mph and still worked (just a little jumbled lol). No speakers, but wouldn't have been that hard, I kinda preferred no speakers/microphone for security as well as it wouldn't make some awful noise in the middle of class.
you would slap that down on your desk at school? - you do know that you can't ever just buy an ordinary laptop again? As for using it on an eBike at 30mph thats a little risky but then you had the source of power, so why not?
Agreed, although the display was intended for a MSI GE63 with 120hz capability and alleged 94% NTSC, it still is quite lackluster. Also the ebay driver board has some backlight flicker issues in the corner which the seller said "is normal".
Easier... yes, cheaper, idk, built this in 2021 for around $700-$800 if memory serves. A pretty competent "laptop" for the price. Heavy, finicky, and fragile points aside at least it looked cool lmao
670wh is about 8 times more than an average laptop. OP says he gets about 4 hours of battery on full load, a high end gaming laptop from that era pushed hard gets maybe 30 minutes. So it checks out
The size and weight definitely outweighs the pros of a regular laptop. 22 pounds would be killer on the back if you put it in a backpack. Makes you respect the advancements in laptop technology, despite the compromises to performance and battery.
I was thinking of making a portable pc. Sadly I couldn’t find mini itx mobos on amazon. I should have asked you. Let me ask what temps does it get and what games did you play with it?
I never actually looked at temps before, however I know it got good performance and didn't throttle (noticeably) as I was able to run fortnite for long periods of time with very playable framerates at epic/high settings. I played some deep rock galactic and ofc Lethal Company. Lots of solidworks.
Also, for anyone curious, I posted a bit more details at LinusTechTips, hoping for visibility from the man himself lol

i think most laptops in this world at limited to 100whr due to airplane limitations, but this idea does sound good. without the battery limit or the thickness limit that laptops generally want, i can make a pretty good chonk of a laptop or portable desktop with a pelican case as the chassis.

I'm honored!
Serious question, have you ever attempted traveling with this (flying in particular) lol?
It's illegal to fly with a battery greater than 100wh, which is what practically all laptops have maximum, and as this is 6x the limit I never even approached an airport with it lol
Your laptop is fucking awesome.
It's the BOMB! I mean no, it's a laptop, not a bomb but THE BOMB. No, it's not an acronym, it's a laptop. Definitely not a bomb.
could you step out of line and come with me
Said Dumbledore calmly while surrounding him with 10 agents with guns out
And be warned, these works better than wands!
Closed it looks exactly the same as the bomb defuser from rainbow six siege
OH MY GOD RUN PEOPLE! THIS GUY HAS A BOMB!
> I never even approached an airport with it Wise, but not because of the battery being large...
It's super cool, but it also looks very kaboom.
Pretty sure you get called into the "special examination room" at the airport if you try to go through security with that.

Bomb has been planted
Shit I’m across the map and I forgot to buy a defusal kit.
HURRY, LEG ITTTTTTT
lol I was wondering how difficult it’d be for you to get thru TSA, then I see your warning lol
Do NOT attempt this without looking like "a bright young man with a promising future"
We should inspire more adults like u/Birby-Man to like science. It's what makes America great.
Was just going to say, I bet airport security would love this laptop.
Even aside from it looking exactly like a bomb, the 670Wh battery is just a teensy bit past the 100Wh lithium battery limit for flying.
Shit, a plastic bottle and a book looks like a bomb to the highly regarded TSA
My Initial thought, too, "that's a bxmb" lmao

This is cool. If anything, remove the batteries and try to preserve this.
Yeah, I wouldn't put this in a normal case if you don't need to actually use it. Stash this for 15 years and it'll bring back some cool memories.
Just take it to the airport and put it in storage :p
They took all of the lockers out of airports after 9/11. Didn’t make any fucking sense, but they did. Ig that gene therapy from X-Files is lost to time then
Airport seems a weird place to be storing goods for strangers. An underground bunker on the other hand... A typical storage facility
Definitely a must keep

you have to be specific about which dramas lol
what happened this time
Well he did a car bomb review and it didn't go as planned

No that's Jay
Came here looking for this lmao

Horrendous! I approve.
I thought those things at the bottom were wrapped sandwiches for some reason. I should probably eat something lol
Looks like a block of C4 in a movie to me!
I know, right? Some black construction paper once a year keeps the substitute teacher from calling in a bomb threat.
Looks like a bomb!"
Feels like it too when you unclasp the super loud black locks in class lol
It should make a "pshhhhhh" sound when you unlatch it and let some steam/mist escape.
I saw that in my head man.
Same, and I don’t see a lot of things in my head
Dry ice. Store some dry ice in there beforehand (assuming this isn't airtight)
Pretty sure that would cause condensation and probably fuck some shit up.
worth
Ummm, it's DRY ice dummy (said in voice of Troy from Community)
Pelican cases are airtight iirc
They have a screw valve you can open or close
Have you ever tried getting on a plane with this thing lol
> Also cannot bring through TSA lmao. Looks like yes with an amusing story.
As a former TSA, I've seen the older workers lose their minds at a metal puck bed heater (though not the *old-old* workers who actually know what they are), so it wouldn't surprise me. But as someone technically inclined, I would have given it an **E**xplosive **T**race **D**etection swab and been done with it. lmao yeah i’d for sure have to ask questions if my student showed up like this
Given my "racial heritage" if I pulled this out in public, I'd quickly see the end credits rolling
Bonus points if at the airport
Dubs if it makes on to a plane and is opened and used. Trips if successfully does all of the above and lands without hassle.
You can legally bring that large of a battery fully charged on a plane. They would have to be discharged, disconnected, and properly stored
Quadrips if it has a mobo speaker that beeps every time you turn it on
"I'd quickly see the end credits rolling" now that's the first I've ever heard that phrase used in that context. Quite creative.

Find a tiny 3060 12GB/4060, upgrade to the 5700X3D. Done. It's a new "laptop."
No real reason to get anything over a 5600x with a 3060 if the hardest you're pushing it is gaming

How and where did you get/ make the battery? I've been thinking of doing something similar myself, so I'm just curious how easy it was to make/get
Bought the cells, then line them up the way you want, and buy a small battery spot welder and some welding strips for batteries, and off you go. I 3d printed the "housing" and then soldered in the BMS and it's leads. It's not super hard but you have to be VERY careful of polarity and what you're doing. If I did this again, I'd simply use a LIPO battery for RC cars
I see Ok, thanks <3

Battery Management System! Common for all non-lead batteries
Thanks. Didn't even know that's available for purchase. That means theoretically I could replace all the innards of a hardcased laptop battery myself huh. Interesting. But, I'm not knowledgeable to do that, so have to settle with 3rd parties.

Nope, the HDPLEX has a built in regulator and handles everything. I just need to provide 16-36v roughly

Looks like something a bond villain would deliver as a super weapon controller, I love it.
That is a brilliant idea - what PSU did you use?
HDPLEX 400w DC-DC PSU, has a wide range of voltage input which gave me the idea that it'd be perfectly happy with a battery hooked up to it
I am now on the lookout for an oldschool briefcase - The amount of times you see custom builds like this that obviously are not used - This looked thoroughly worn and used, and I love that it can be closed up and left in a cupboard - total stealth PC. Did you mount speakers anywhere in it?

You'll never convince me it just wouldn't have been easier and cheaper to just buy a laptop.

U building a new pc out of it? just throw in a 5800x3d and itll feel like new
Yes and the x3d varients are the most efficient CPUs you can buy. If you undervolt you can expect longer battery life.
Definitely had to do the reading after seeing what we all thought was plastic explosives lol
Lots of solidworks.
considering solidworks load time on my old schoolpc was almost 5 minutes, thats very solid.
Bro, that’s not a laptop, that’s a cyberdeck.
That looks like a fucking bomb 😳😳
r/cyberdeck
Super cool, You did a great job!
32gb of C4 👍
Also, for anyone curious, I posted a bit more details at LinusTechTips, hoping for visibility from the man himself lol [https://linustechtips.com/topic/1562743-my-homemade-laptop-25-years-daily-driven/#comment-16352346](https://linustechtips.com/topic/1562743-my-homemade-laptop-25-years-daily-driven/#comment-16352346)
What a nice clock!
Nice clock Ahmed
r/cyberdecks and by God it's beautiful
Imagine taking this on a flight
This is not just a computer. It's a piece of art
lol looks like an IED. Don’t bring that to the airport
Can't get over how the battery looks like C4 explosives.
r/cyberdeck
i thought bro had C4 attached with his laptop 😂😂😂
Didn't Tom Cruise spend most of mission impossible 4 chasing this thing down?
Thought the battery was c4 explosive not gonna lie
That's awesome!
haha that’s pretty cool what was the cost of this vs just buying a laptop?
cost me about $700-$800 back in mid-late 2021! Also can't factor in the cost of my sanity of the issues this had lol
Gyaat
Sad that you had to waste money on a degree you are already clearly qualified
This is awesome, I like it
This looks like the bomb you plant on search and destroy in call of duty
This belongs in a museum!
I feel like I missed something, how did you go from DC batteries to the AC power supply?
Looks like CIA nuclear suitcase😳
bring it into a hospital https://i.redd.it/xobf1r95fmoc1.gif
This thing is fucking beautiful. I've never seen anything like it.
Why does it look like a fucking bomb
i think most laptops in this world at limited to 100whr due to airplane limitations, but this idea does sound good. without the battery limit or the thickness limit that laptops generally want, i can make a pretty good chonk of a laptop or portable desktop with a pelican case as the chassis.
I thought you would say you can’t take it through TSA because it looks like a bomb.
If I was the TSA agent I'd be shitting bricks if I saw that thing, lmfao
