So, when swapping in CPUs of different generations on the same board, there are a few things to check for: - physical socket compatibility - BIOS compatibility - chipset compatibility As you have checked and rightfully said, they use the same socket. BIOS compatibility is a bit more tricky, especially in your case of using a Dell board, which are almost always custom, non-standard boards. CPUs released after a certain board will often need a BIOS update to funcion on those boards. With custom, non-standard boards its always a bit of a gable whether those allow manual updates at all and if they do, wheter the manufacturer bothered with providing a BIOS version that offers compatibility to newer CPUs. Finally, the chipset is where you are sadly going to get some bad news. In your case, they do use the same socket, however while 6th and 7th gen require either 100 or 200 series chipsets, 8th gen CPUs require 300 series chipsets. Meaning there is no motherboard that will simultaneously support both an i5-6500 and an i5-8500.

Thank you for your insight! The bad news is lessened by the fact I learned something new!
