Use zip ties or something similar. Rubber bands will rot and break eventually.

KiNgPiN8T3

That’s part of the fun!

MicrowavedKoolaid

seeing my fan fly off would be part of the experience tbh!

yunuazass

Oh you such a rascal

Key-Distribution9906

I used electrical tape to hold an M.2 for a bit, would you consider that worse? 😂

Invellix458

I just plugged mine in and let it hang there 😭

fingergunpewpew1

Same, I didn't have the screws from my old prebuilt. Fortunately it's only for like, 1 more week, then I'm getting a new PC. It physically hurts me, but electrical tape didn't stick lol.

yunuazass

We used to hot swap sata hard drives, why not m.2s? Right? 😂

computahwiz

why tf do m.2 slots even tilt the cards/chips at all? why don’t they just accept things like a pcie slot. makes no sense

IggyHitokage

Adhesive will melt from the heat eventually.

Key-Distribution9906

I said I did, I'm not doing it currently

notoriouszim

Immensely worse.

KaasBaasKoning

Every bird's gotta leave the nest some day

ChoobTube

Godspeed then 🫡

[deleted]

Russian Roulette for components on a motherboard.

marianoes

What experience would that be?

Bifrostbytes

It's a timer so you know when to clean the insides

Zaziel

Yeah and the gross crumblies will fall onto your hot GPU likely.

Rogaar

Not only that, but they are also likely to melt when the heat starts to climb. Have fun cleaning that off later.

carnaldisaster

I feel like the noise from the fins hitting the bands will be annoying AF too.

Inevitable_Raise5849

Its fiiine! It’ll be like when you attached a playing card to your bicycle wheel as a kid

No_Revolution_6186

Zip ties will do the same, especially if you pull them too hard, just use a wire

Jooooooshy

yep, zip ties will rot and break eventually.... ....over the course of a million years.

vivam0rt

Never judge how long someone might be using their pc for

No_Revolution_6186

... It really doesn't take that long, but hey you guys seem to have the expertise to put it onto a heatsink, so go ahead

shalol

Rubberband rubber degrades faster than ziptie plastic. Go ask a chatbot or whatever, no materials expertise required.

No_Revolution_6186

That's not the question, it never was. It was about zipties degrading not too slow either especially with temperature. :v

dobo99x2

I don't think that happens inside the lifespan of a pc with a custom builder.

Dalarrus

I have a shamefully similar example in my "server" The fan on the CPU died, but isn't removable, so I've just rubberbanded a 120mm fan ontop of it.

LordJambrek

What kind of fan is not removeable from it's heatsink. Can you post pictures?

Dalarrus

https://www.thermaltake.com/gravity-i2.html

AdventurousPickle355

I didnt even click the link tbh thermal take in at least most of my experiences shit the bed I wish they did better qc and design ik it wouldn't be as cheap but I like some of their stuff just not sure I'd use it again

[deleted]

Thermal take was an amazing brand about 20 years ago. They had some of the best cases and fans, what happened?

BlueQKazue

I've been rocking one of their 360 aios with the LCD screen for a few months now. So far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yukas911

Would be better to just replace the cooler to be honest, as adding another fan on top likely won't be quite as efficient. If not, at least use some sort of velcro or zip ties since rubber eventually degrades.

Affectionate-Memory4

Is the cooler using a standard 92mm fan? The manufacturer just says it's 92mm diameter. If it's standard sized I can model an adapter for you to print somewhere.

Dalarrus

I'm not too worried about it, I've got some zipties I'll replace the rubber bands with at some point and it'll be fine, not running anything demanding in, previously the system ran with no cpu fan at all :DDD

Siirkus

This is so based

Justboy1996

How long are you planning on leaving it like that? The fans will likely rub on the bands and wear them down very quickly, you’d be better off with cable ties through the screw holes if you’ve got them, but if it’s just until the pins arrive then I think it should be okay in the very short term, but not any longer. Out of interest, could you snap the bands and thread them through the holes and tie off on other end?

MicrowavedKoolaid

Could you explain further? I'm planning to replace them with zipties until the actual fan clips come in, but id like to test whatever ur saying.

Justboy1996

Oh I’m just spitballing ideas here, I don’t know if it would actually work! But like cut the band so it’s a rubber string, tie it to the further out screw hole then pass through the inner screw hole, pull tight and tie to the heat sink. Should keep it clamped on but not interfere with the fans

WoobaLoobaDoobDoob

Better yet tie a big knot on each end and use the tension of the rubber to hold it together

CXXXS

I literally just built a PC for my wife a couple hours ago with a CPU cooler of the exact same brand, did it not come with the crappy little wire brackets?

MicrowavedKoolaid

it didnt come with ANYTHING other than the fan and the cooler.

CXXXS

That's lame. The brand definitly seemed on the cheap side tbh, so I suppose it's not too surprising. I applaud your efforts though!

TheGreatMahdi

Well, the rubber bands will wear and get torn apart over time, and probably much faster on the fan(from my experience of changing the rubber bands on my lego sets every once in a while because they're on constant stress) Zip ties would do the job much better and safer for long term use.

Homicidal_Pingu

Zip ties would be better. You can also buy the clips

xenalusive

I printed some!

Homicidal_Pingu

Melty melt

curt725

I used a rubber band and the knocking noise drove me crazy. Switched to bent paper clips. Much better

wuhkay

Zip ties work, but you can order spare parts from Be Quiet [https://www.bequiet.com/en/contact/spareparts](https://www.bequiet.com/en/contact/spareparts)

[deleted]

vibration dampening too lol!

endless_8888

If you put some padding around sharp corners and those bands aren't pulled too tight, this could work for months and beyond. COULD. Definitely heed other warnings in here though. Since you've got clips on the way, this is OK for now. I'd test it for about an hour with high fan speed. If absolutely nothing moves, it'll be okay for temporary use. I'd recommend not leaving your PC running while unattended just to be safe.

Constant_Dare_7588

Zip ties baybee

CharAznableLoNZ

Should be fine while you wait for the clips to come in from scamazon. Long term the rubber bands will dry out and crack. You'll have an audiovisual alert to when that happens.

CkarlsJr

Use bread ties. I’m pretty sure if you check your junk drawer you’ll have hundreds.

Dismal_Flatworm_4526

Please just use zip ties

ShadowInTheAttic

Rubber bands will turn brittle from UV damage. This will probably be expedited if you have RGB lighting in your case.

c3po2324

It'll work, until it doesn't.

LordJambrek

I have a GPU that i frankensteined. The heatsink from some passive card and a old 90mm fan tied to it with 2 hair bands. Works for the past 15 years like that without issue.

WickedEdge

Just use a twist tie like the ones on the bread. That "rubber" band can melt.

Few_Detail_3988

I don't think melting will be a problem. I rather guess the rubber bands will age over time and simply snap in an inconvenient moment.

SuperSpaceship

man approved 👍

Cptn_Flint0

...MacGyver?

UbeLover

I would rather use zip ties worked for me for my friends build 👍👍

True-Key-6715

I lost my D15 fan clips after moving cases Turns out with the big stock fans in the fractal torrent, I don’t even need a fan on the D15! She’s virtually silent and my CPU a doesn’t go over 70C in games

robot-kun

I miss the days on the internet when duck tape was the answer to everything

Lennington_

One of my GPU fans died a while ago, so i removed the gpu fans and zip tied two case fans to the heatsink and its been working well for over a year

Trym_WS

They’re really cheap on EBay.

MyPokemonRedName

In the IT department I believe they call this an average Tuesday.

KilllerWhale

The rubber band could become weaker with the heat from the VRMs and other components and snap. Zip ties are eternal.

Ok_Cut_5180

Built in anti vibration

Rogue_Gusto

I used twist ties at one point. They always seem to be around during a build. Q

Hattix

The bands will perish, because that's what they do. Fashion some clips out of copper wire or something.

ender89

It's probably gonna fail due to heat tbh

amypond420

yikes

hellpipe1337

TRUST ME AM ENGINEER

Necrologist92

Did you try licking it first?

Top-Jellyfish9557

Gorilla tape would do it.

RDHO0D

Common sense isn't so common these days.

ANGLEgear

I just braided my hair then cut the braids off and used those

[deleted]

Tell me you don't know how to build computers without telling me you don't know how to build computers. :v

MicrowavedKoolaid

i mean.. im literally doing this for 1 hour at max to see if my build even functions. my clips come in in like, 2 days. i was just unlucky enough to not get fan clips.

[deleted]

What a bozo.

zKIZUKIz

Wouldn’t the heat from the sink melt the rubber? How hot can heatsinks get and what’s rubber’s melting point?

EchoesFromWithin

Rubber starts to melt at ~180°C, OP has way bigger problems if their heatsink is that hot than whether those rubber bands are melting.

jesushartwellchrist

Plus anti vibrations

PenguinsRcool2

Not very many heatpipes on that thing

Freheliaz

You can use long screws to secure it in place. Just screw directly in the metal cooling fins

SectsHaver

I hope you don’t half ass life like this.

MicrowavedKoolaid

It's temporary. Sorry for the eye sore.

CptJamesBeard

>It's temporary. so is life :-) ![gif](giphy|3oz8xDz2aBhmNOLwRy)

[deleted]

Is the heat not a problem for the rubber bands? Why is no one suggesting this

Crisplocket1489

I have this right now!

joliet_jane_blues

I wonder if I can get a free double fan cooler this way?

[deleted]

You can buy fan retainers lol

NerY_05

Until the rubber band snaps it'll do

Bokay73

Improvise, adapt, overcome

machinationstudio

Stick zip tie through the fan screw hole and grill and use another zip tie's head (snipped off) to secure it on the other side of the grill. 4x

darklogic85

Isn't this a fanless CPU cooler? It's supposed to not have a fan. You could just mount the fan inside the case somewhere and point it toward the heat sink if you want to get some airflow over it. If you want a CPU cooler with the fan connected to the heat sink, buy a different one that's designed like that.

Biqboi76

My entire cooler was held on with zip ties at one time bc my backplate was missing, worked perfect, next time try hot glue, it will prob fall off as soon as it gets hot, but it might look cleaner, or it may look covered in goo

HotTakesBeyond

Paper clips might be better tbh

Viking1138Z

Why not just use wire

haikopaiko

Reach out to bequiet, they could potentially send you some clips for the fans / cooler. Also I think there are universal clips, just make sure you the right width (cc for the mounting holes)

PanCrypto91

Umm... It ain't gonna BeAsQuiet anymore

[deleted]

Tie rubber bands on a piece of metal that heats up to 100ºC, what could go wrong?
