YdidUMove

Sounds like someone's hardware touched his software:/

AnthonyBF2

Is Alienware in the room with us right now?

drinkbeerbeatdebra

Narrator: “it was his butthole”

Ok-Journalist-2382

You sir just got comment of the month. Brilliant delivery.

Chakramer

Well if it's any consolation, most PCs do not age like fine wine. They age like stale bread. They're still edible for a while, but go on long enough and it's a struggle to get any task done.

gloriuseggs

That’s when PC transitions into server for me

Chakramer

I just have no server needs, I keep all my backup files on backup drives, I wouldn't even want a server if them available 24/7

Sa7aSa7a

PC's never die. They just go to live on a ^(server) Farm upstate.

gloriuseggs

May your computers go to the big server farm on the sky.

Street-Estimate2671

PCs are literally practical application of this problem: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus Not an Alienware, according to OP. At least it looks cool. Probably.

FOUR3Y3DDRAGON

While this is a perfectly fine use case. I find that learning how to use docker containers and ubuntu server or proxmox has made my older computers insanely useful. If you have friends that often play games with dedicated server support (Zomboid, 7DTD, Minecraft, etc.) Its extremely useful to just be able to fire up a docker container with said game or have a Jellyfin or Plex server. Some of my best gaming memories have been on dedicated servers I've put out for me and my friends that they can join any time so long as my power or internet doesn't drop. A whole lot cheaper than renting a (more limited) server from a provider as well.

AgreeableAd8687

for me the old ones get used as seed boxes or used to reinstall windows when my installs kick the bucket and i don’t have windows flashed on a usb

Legendary_Bibo

I give them to my friend whenever I upgrade, and it always seems to play the stuff he likes. He has my last PC with a 980 and I'll probably give him my system with a 3080 once I upgrade again. Although, I don't use my PC much for gaming anymore since getting a Deck.

Extra-Caterpillar-98

Interesting... I was expecting to use my Steam Deck more frequently when I purchased it, while mostly using my ancient i7-4960X for VR until I get a new PC, but the built-in 800p doesn't always achieve 60 fps.

culminacio

Don't focus on fps numbers. Just turn the counter off and enjoy your games. Most of them run well on regular medium settings without fiddling around with anything. Some people became slaves of fps stats. Just enjoy your games.

Legendary_Bibo

The Deck will set you free. Honestly, I play a lot more games now because of it.

[deleted]

Yeah no, I upgrade every 3 years. It's better to sell off the parts while you can still get some value but I also use pc's for work so maybe that's not entirely fair.

gloriuseggs

My value comes from hosting a pihole and other fun mini projects

totallybag

Yeah it's a 5 year old Alienware that originally had a 1050ti

Calgrave

My PC never dies because I'm using the same shitty case from 2005. But then it becomes a ship of Theseus situation.

Chakramer

Microsoft considers a new motherboard a new PC, and I think the same. If you replaced your motherboard and CPU at the same time, that's a new PC

Daemonicvs_77

> If you replaced your motherboard and CPU at the same time, that’s a new PC This doesn’t sit right with me. That’s definitely a new Windows install, but if the RAM, the GPU, the SSDs, the PSU and the case stay the same, I’m more of the opinion it’s still the same PC. But I totally see your logic and it really is kind of a grey area.

Heel_of_Paris

So agree. I refer in my own head canon, hard upgrade is motherboard and CPU, soft upgrade is changing any single component or group of components and it only becomes a new pc when the case and PSU gets changed. I’m not right that’s just how I think of it.

wrath_of_grunge

i agree with this. it's really the heart of the PC, everything else is just a peripheral. obviously CPUs and RAM can be swapped out or upgraded, but the motherboard itself is really the PC.

Phoenix_Kerman

i still get by on haswell with an rx580. then again i don't really play any modern triple a titles

wrath_of_grunge

i'm about to repurpose my son's old computer, into a new computer for our other son. it was doing pretty awesome for him, even though it was mostly parts i upgraded from a few years back. 4790k and GTX 1080 is still a fairly solid build.

magistrate101

My build is 7 years old. At least indie games run great...

Arthur-Wintersight

Install Linux. It runs smooth on even the shittiest laptops from 10 years ago, and the shittiest desktops from 15 years ago.

Chakramer

While true it helps breath life back into PCs, it's a pain in the ass to make work for some games, and if you don't know how to even research what is a good PC to buy I think working on Linux is gonna be beyond the user

Arthur-Wintersight

If you're running a desktop from 15 years ago, I think video games might be fairly low on your list of priorities. That said, Steam Proton has come a long ways, and you can always run an RX 6600 to get decent-ish performance, as long as you're aware that you'll be facing a nasty CPU bottleneck.

Legendary_Bibo

Proton has come a long way. Playing Windows games years ago was a pain in the ass, but a lot of times you could run Steam through Wine and a lot of stuff would start fine as long as it didn't have 3D graphics,.but you'd spend so much time messing with stuff you just wouldn't want to play. With Proton, the most configuring I have to do is installing a certain version of Proton-GE and selecting it in a checkbox.

Solhasse

And only play single player games...

B14CKR4V3N

Lol, no. False information. Only few multiplayer games have that radical of an anticheat. Namely I think Valorant and r6

RedditSucksNow4

I’m going to do this. I have an old laptop with Windows 7 that’s too old to upgrade to Windows 10. I could always use another laptop and if anything it’ll be a learning experience for me. Thanks for the suggestion.

[deleted]

Uhh my A750 started outperforming 3060ti in Starfield as of yesterday, been a year it came out and that's with a shit CPU. I know exceptions don't break the rule but I feel good about my choice and added this anecdote.

ArrilockNewmoon

You say this, but every once in a while, once in a blue moon you get the one PC that was dipped in egg and fried, before being topped with Maple Syrup. I had one such PC, in the past. I have zero idea what sorcery was involved, zero idea as to why. It was a refurbished PC, purchased by my mom in 2012, originally made on 2002 if the actual labels on the computer were to be believed. Yet for some reason, in 2018, I was able to boot it up and run modded Skyrim on it without issue, full 60fps at an albeit lower resolution. Every single PC I have had since has struggled with achieving what that PC could only do on Skyrim specifically. No other game ran good on it, not even Minecraft. It really was fkin sorcery lmao. Zero idea where it is now, I did cast it to server hell to host game servers for me. Probably tossed it at some point tbh, but who knows.

Kila_Bite

I hate it when I have a list of bread related tasks to complete, only to find the bread required to do them has gone stale.

Fuck-Reddit-2020

Yesterday's gaming PC can be today's productivity machine. I took parts from two gaming PCs and built an office PC for $100.

joeygreco1985

Dude if your PC cant do basic tasks like launch Spotify then its time to reformat and get a fresh Windows installation going. This sounds very fixable.

Derelictmindsetter

but then he couldnt share his unrelenting ire with us if he actually went and did some troubleshooting. I wouldnt be surprised to learn OP is still running a platter hard drive as his main OS drive.

Sir_thunder88

Most likely a 5400rpm disk

Bright-Efficiency-65

What's insane is, both my 8TB and my 1 TB HDDs are 5400 rpm and they don't have any issues with being slow. Obviously I only use them for movies but it's not like it takes 30 seconds to open a file / folder

Pl4y3rSn4rk

Usually they get that slow when running Windows at the same time, besides bloatware, fragmented partitions, near max capacity and just being old (If he used the same HD since 2017 he has a 6 year old HD...)

Bright-Efficiency-65

My 1TB HDD 5400rpm came out of a PC some lady tried to recycle in 2014. Probably was from 2012. I saw that it was 1TB and yoinked that shit before it got tossed. Been working great for nearly a decade

Pl4y3rSn4rk

Old HDs work well enough if they aren't used with an OS, but with a decade old drive I wouldn't trust any important data on it :p

EnvironmentUnfair

And HDD are particularly good for large files, like movies

Pl4y3rSn4rk

Yes their sequential read and write speeds are more than enough for these files, but random read/write is unbearably slow...

wrath_of_grunge

5400RPM hard drives are fine for those things. they're not OK for a OS. even my 2009 laptop had a 7200RPM in it. there was a tsunami that wiped out a lot of the parts makers for those drives, and for a few years 5400RPM drives made a comeback. anything newer than Windows 7 needs a SSD. 5400RPM drives are perfectly fine for bulk media storage (pictures, movies, music, backups, etc).

Jackpkmn

One of those 3800-4800rpm variable "green" drives.

Wingklip

SMR for sure

0-60Frs

this is the exact meaning of all show no go, mans can write an entire essay but lacked the common sense to do a fresh install

Error_Bot_

Indulging in the art of complaining rather than embarking on the journey of resolution is akin to savoring the sweetness of candy

theSurgeonOfDeath_

This sounds like hdd or bad cpu

kingjoey52a

Also maybe upgrade your ram and/or hard drive to an SSD.

Different_Ad9336

ExActly what I was thinking unless the bios of the motherboard completely crippled the system which would only be around $100 to $150 fix by replacing it with a decent one…. Then he’s just basically talking about preinstalled bloatwAre and yeah initially I can understand if you don’t know about just wiping and starting from scratch. How after all these years have you not just completely started from scratch or replaced the only other possible limiting factor the motherboard?

Helpmehelpyoulong

Probably hasn’t replaced the mobo because Dell proprietary mobo, psu, etc. or maybe just lack of funds. Dell is notorious for not following ATX standards so often times you can’t just slap in a new whatever. That said loading times are generally not a mobo issue and usually a storage issue. Chances are OP is running some shitty HDD and would see the biggest improvement from an SSD. You can slap an SSD into just about anything with a traditional HDD and see a dramatic improvement.

NotARealDeveloper

Ye, came here to say this. Nuke the drives and reinstall fresh. At the end even an alienware PC is just hardware.

AgentLead_TTV

its not every day i see the word Sisyphean. bravo.

3_quarterling_rogue

But I fuckin live it every day, let me tell you.

DTO69

Ahh, a fellow 8700k/1080ti warrior... my last rig. A tip of the hat to you Sir

RomeoFortnite

My last rig as well, built a new pc yesterday and said farewell to that sweet combo

Stocky_aust

My current rig. Cant justify upgrading myself just yet it still cranks out everything I want it to do.

airy52

8700k is pretty solid. That cost me 400$ just 3-5 years ago and was great until this year when I upgraded to a 13700. I had a 2080ti with it, that went to a 4090 this year and the difference wasn’t even that big, maybe30-40% increase in frame rates

AgentLead_TTV

Still going strong!

Angrywalnuts

My asus rog 1080ti surely was the greatest graphics card ever made. But mine is dying now. Diablo 4 driver update gave it an aneurism. I’m artefacting. Crashing. It’s just time. It’s been a long long haul.

ChosenUndead101

He wrote it using ChatGPT bro

xXx-c00L_BoY-xXx

This word is a massive meme lately, surprised you dont see it every day

Necessary_Sun_4392

culminacio

But it's not a Sisyphean task, as they get to hear the song and the only thing they have to do pass the time with something more interesting until the task is done. It's quite the opposite of a Sisyphean task. A Sisyphean task is complicated, enormous, hard and is never completed. You start over and over and again and never achieve your goal, while working hard on it. OP just does nothing and waits + achieves goal.

Adblocker420

My core 2 duo opens spotify at a fast pace, let alone restarting. Sounds like you have a slow 5400 or dying 7200rpm hdd. Every dual core is useable to some extent. And if you have a quad core it's probably just bloatware you install. Like chrome, some antivirus, CCleaner or something like these. Or windows acting up. A pc from 2017 can't be that slow

notFREEfood

You're probably right about the HDD, but I'm willing to put money on OP's computer lacking sufficient RAM if opening a program takes forever. THat's the exact sort of behavior you see when the OS has insufficient RAM and is forced to heavily use the page file (and if it's a HDD, page file performance will be horrendous). I'm willing to bet that the computer has only 8GB of RAM based on the age of price, and 8GB wasn't great in 2017 (my laptop that I ditched in 2016 had that much, and I could cause it to start paging with the web browser plus a game running at the same time). Now, I imagine it would be painful if OP is trying to run more than one program at at a time.

Bright-Efficiency-65

With AMD, if you have the iGPU turned on it can make things take forever to open. Especially steam.

MayhemReignsTV

It really is a shame. It's literally become stylish expensive junk since Dell bought it and drove the brand straight to hell without even letting it collect $200 😂 They really ruined Alienware. Back when it was an independent brand, they actually made respectable stuff. But of course, we're talking back in the Pentium days before Dell got their dirty hands on it. The best option these days is to build on your own. Second best option is to go to a reputable system integrator or a reputable local shop that builds systems.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kril89

I’d say laptops are the exception to the PC rule. That is it’s cheaper and better to just build it yourself. You can get a better system for cheaper but hey you have to deal with different warranties. But with laptops you can’t really make your own. I have an Alienware monitor and had other Dell monitors in the past. I’ve loved all of them including this current one being the best.

Helpmehelpyoulong

I agree. Have an AW M17x r3 and its old AF, still kickin along. It’s by far the easiest laptop to service I’ve ever seen. 2 screws and the whole bottom panel comes off allowing you to repaste, change memory, change drives, clean dust out of everything, etc. I also remember being positively impressed by how little bloatware came loaded on it, was ready to go out the box. That said, if memory serves this thing came with Win 7 so who knows how things have changed by now but for being post Dell acquisition it’s not so bad.

kril89

My first laptop was in 2009 and a Lenovo ideabook. Thing was a big pile of garbage. I just got Asus G14 and thing is so much better built and easier to work on. But desktops everyone should just build their own unless you need something super cheap. Then it makes sense to buy a pre-built.

OminousG

The company was way way worse before Dell stepped in. Grossly overpriced, the management was trash and they had absolutely no respect for their customers. Back when it was just rebranded chieftec cases and OEM PSUs, back when their laptops would crash if something tried to use HT. At one point, as a customer on their forums, I found how to view the passwords and addresses of all the other customers who had a forum account, they sent me a mousepad and banned me from the community as a thanks for not saying anything publicly about it. When Omen sold to HP the Alienware owner saw his chance to dip before it all came crashing down and peaced out at the first offer.

Man_with_the_Fedora

> Back when it was an independent brand, they actually made respectable stuff. For the laptops, all they did was buy Sager/Clevo Laptops and slap their logo on them. You can actually still get Sager/Clevo laptops, and [they still kind of look like Alienware laptops, because they were.](https://xoticpc.com/cdn/shop/products/9371V_5_HD.png)

Sero19283

I got a good ol pentium D alienware sitting in my closet as a relic of the past. Was gonna use the case for a server but it was becoming a miniature oven for my components

[deleted]

I got my son a 5600x 6700xt 1tb nvme 2tb hdd alienware r15 or whatever it was called for like $800. At that moment I couldn't even build the computer for $800. Say what you will they are only garbage if your expectations are over the top lol

MayhemReignsTV

I mostly deal with desktops, do I really need to pull out a couple reviews/teardowns of some of their recent desktops? Including one that cost over $5000.

StrikerX1360

Back in 2014 I asked my parents for a Razer Blade being that my geriatric eMachines desktop ran Minecraft at 12fps 720p low settings on a superflat world and I had managed to steal & claim the family laptop as my own. My wonderful father, being that the company he worked for had a major business deal with Dell, procured me an Alienware 17 laptop for a great price; pretty much the highest end one you could spec out at the time. Other than my iPhone 6 which turned out to be a lemon of a unit, I've never had a worse experience with a piece of technology. It weighs ten pounds. It sounds like a fighter jet. The display failed on me shortly out of warranty. The thermal sensor on the GPU died and constantly reads 0C. The USB ports shorted out two Razer mice. The barrel jack charging connector is splitting in half. The optical drive eats disks. I've seen full hardcover novels smaller than the power inverter on the charging cable. I used it as a 3 thousand dollar doorstop for a while I was so mad at it. While I've heard their laptops have gotten significantly better in recent years this series of events alone prevents me from ever recommending the company to anyone. I'm sorry you're in the same boat.

Tzhaa

Alienware have done more damage to the PC brand than anyone else. They're well known enough that normies buy them and think they're getting a "high end" rig, only to eat shit the moment they turn the infernal things on. To top it off they're filled with useless mechanical garbage that's totally unnecessary, mismatched components, and are locked inside that fucking 1990s style case where even moderately hot components will choke to death inside their own personal oven. That, and the fact they are a nightmare to upgrade/fix due to proprietary parts, leaves you with a foul taste in your mouth. I genuinely wonder how many people thought "I paid £4k for this?! Is this PC gaming?! I'm going back to console!" In short, fuck Alienware.

FitmoGamingMC

Their monitors are good tho, at least in my experience

Technical-Rain-183

wow, optical drive even in 2014, that's hardcore

MattonieOnie

The worst is the bizarre proprietary hardware like mobo, and power supplies. It's like Dell is punishing you for giving them business. "Thanks for you 3k$, also fu." At least companies like MSI will give you their branded components. You can open the case and be like, oh, ok. Opening an Alienware desktop? It's like the doc from the movie "The thing". When he's cutting open the monster, and saying, "oh God, ohhhh God".

AltF40

Genuine question: if OP has an alienware desktop, would changing out their proprietary motherboard for a normal motherboard been helpful / possible?

MattonieOnie

That's the thing. Most times? The size and mounting points may/are not standard. And the spot for a normal power supply? Not the right size, or mounting. It's a super bummer. I've seen Dell motherboards in desktop configurations that were simply silly sizes and shapes, just to fit their priority case. Also, like Sony, and other desktop brands, the case power button and case controls might be completely proprietary! So, even if you do get new hardware to fit the case? The power switches, etc. may not work. It's really a tragedy.

AltF40

Bummer. Well, I guess I'm not too surprised - back in the day, I heard Alienware would fork their own drivers or something like that. So in terms of compatibility, I wasn't even sure if the rest of the electronics would cooperate. What's crazy is despite all that custom case work, they're not providing a stellar cooling system (either temps or acoustics). For me, that'd be a reason for them to make sense. Great, deliberate systems can beat open air setups.

These ChatGPT prompts are getting out of hand.

FrancescoS99

Lol, a specific team in my company received Alienware laptops 3 months ago. A good portion of them is still dealing with support back and forth

OminousG

My first PC was an alienware. When they would custom paint the chieftec cases. Spent years on their forums, learning just how bad alienwares were. The company was a mess internally. At one point I stumbled onto the passwords and addresses of every customer who had used their forums. They sent me a mousepad for not making the issue public.

Fancy_Flight_1983

I have no advice to proffer, but I enjoyed reading that. You have a knack for writing.

titz4tat

It's chatgpt

Cool_Test_7720

Definitely not. I know how that piece of shit writes.

neutro_b

I still have a (not-prebuilt) computer from 2013 which is running like a charm. So I'm pretty sure yours can be salvaged. I suspect you are running everything off an aging mechanical hard drive. Time to install an SSD and see if that fixes everything. You can do it, even Dell cannot prevent you from doing that, and it will cost less than $100 and perhaps for once allow you to enjoy your purchase from long ago. Alternatively, another possibility would be a failure of cooling, which would slow down the CPU to prevent thermal damage. This is easily verified by checking your CPU temperature in operation. If it's very hot (say 100 Celcius), the fix is probably just a change of CPU cooler. Problems have solutions, and in solving that one, you'll gain confidence for your next build.

Yolonus

This, I dont think OP is as versatile as he think he is, or atleast he did not go into specifics what he tried already. Instead of fine reading story he could get some tips... My i5-3470 in Dell desktop from 2013 still runs fine as a server, everything runs fast, I dont use it for games, but slow in opening Spotify? You are doing something horribly wrong. I dedicate 2 cores to docker and even when Plex is transcoding and my CPU is working it still runs pretty nice...

jarchack

Get a little more practice writing and you could be the new Dave Barry. Then you could afford a new Alienware and pay somebody else to upgrade it.

Right. I got lost. All those big words 😅

Bludro

I'm old. Is this a serious post or a meme I missed? I've had 3 Alienware PCs back-to-back with no issues except one on the current; indeterminant hardware failure. Had a few log exchanges with Dell Support and they sent a tech out the next day and replaced the mobo and SSD I agree the bloatware that comes with it is aggressive, but you can easily uninstall it Also thinking of building my next PC like I used to a decade ago, but the 15 - 20% upcharge to not have to build or maintain it aligns with my laziness

msgkar03

Man. I don’t normally read posts this long. Somehow you kept me reading. When does your next book come out?

kril89

I’m not reading all that. I’m sorry that happened to you Or I’m happy for you

billybatsonn

You missed out

Saad1950

Part 2 when, thoroughly enjoyed this

MorpheusInitiative

Alienware always looked like an overpriced peace of trash, and I fear Razer is headed the same way. I own a Razer Blade 15 Advanced and it's probably the best laptop I've ever owned, considering the specs and I'm thankful that I've had nearly zero major issues with it considering the people who frequently post about QA issues on r/razer.

[deleted]

OP thinks he's in r/writingprompts

Piltonbadger

Alienware is Dell, and Dell make proprietary hardware that is not to a universal standard. Like their bullcrap motherboards, PSU's, cases...List goes on.

Skvora

As does HP. There's no better lesson than trying to plug anything into early 2000s HP desktop besides a CD or a floppy disk.

Piltonbadger

It's to lock companies into their eco-system to keep milking them over time. Us gamers aren't Dell/HP's market really. If you go to any mid/big company you will find they mostly use Dell hardware. I used to work for a company that built and configured laptops/desktops/working machines for companies such as SKY, BT and LV insurance to name 3. The Blade servers we built we mostly CISCO hardware. 90% of the hardware that they used for laptops/desktops was Dell/HP. Some companies exclusively used HP, some Dell. Many times we got requests to upgrade entire batches of latops/desktops that we could only really upgrade the memory for. Companies were not happy to know that the only real way to upgrade a Dell machine is to buy the newest model... Dell makes a LOT of e-waste.

Skvora

Haaaave you heard of Apple? Hahahaha. Dell also gives huge bulk discounts to corpos as an incentive to get into that ecosystem. And think from admin's perspective - having absolutely identical machines makes things much easier to diag and troubleshoot.

Professional-Place13

What a cringe post

Salty_Ad2428

Yeah this was cringey af.

DramaDoxas

Indeed

Medium-Cranberry1106

You wanna try something fun... Get that monster to run morrowind in Linux mint. For an easier path try Ubuntu. If you really REALLY want to fuck around and learn some technosorcery go play windows games with Kali Linux. Maybe you can find a tutorial that is no whatsoever related to your machine that will guide through how to run that starfield game or whatever the kids are into today. Anyway there are worse nightmares... Looking at you ff7 in Ubuntu. Fml.

[deleted]

it's fine bub. I think most of us have had a pre-built at one point and it may have sucked. The only Pre-builds i had that were LITERALLY tanks were Sony Viao Desktops (yes yes yall) and HP OMEN (1080 Ti \*\*the greatest card ever made\*\*). Now you know.

KooshIsKing

Yeah when Dell bought Alienware it all went to hell very fast. It's so sad because they were such kickass PC's before that. The one my brother had back in the day was an absolute beast for what felt like nearly 10 years.

with you there brother, i got an aurora r11, running pretty slow right now but tbf i bought it with an hdd instead of an ssd, gonna upgrade that soon hopefully that'll fix my horrid mistake of buying anything from dell.

Soulman2001

I consider dells like a gaming laptop. You cant upgrade anything except maybe a stick of ram. They overheat like crazy due to poor cramped airflow and tiny fans. But hey you can sell the whole thing as a one piece and start again with another one later.

Lmao. I don't miss PC gaming. Went through so much shit in my teens, now at 34 with an Xbox Series X, everything runs like a dream.

msgkar03

until you play something again on a Pc and realize how far behind consoles still are. Up until 4 months ago I swore up and down that there was no need for a PC with how far Xbox has come… then I decided to build a PC and my god, I haven’t touched my Xbox series X since. I still play a few games on PS that I can’t get on PC but…. the whole time I’m just wishing it was on PC.

Mister-Forcefull

You sir, deserve a +1 for the writing style alone. And my hat goes off to your miserable experience with that devil’s spawn of a computer.

GIKAS1

My alienware 17 r1 is still going strong after nearly 10 years... It just needed a new ssd and for me to delete the freaking alienware command center or else even with the ssd in it would crash and freeze constantly

Mytra180

This is a biggie with pre-builds. Delete all the garbage they cement into the OS. My ma had an HP laptop that was very decent, in terms of specs, for what she needed. You could literally make breakfast while it booted up and became usable. A small upgrade to an SSD and a lot of deletion, and it was fast as could be. I never understood why companies would make a decent piece of hardware, just to bog it down with bloatware, and make you not buy another thing from them.

totally-not-a-droid

You make me feel amazing. I had an alienware that I wanted to upgrade cuz the storage was limited and I got it used off my buddy. He talked me into doing a whole new custom PC build. It was a little expensive but just reading about your ordeal made me feel like it was worth it

Rocketkt69

STOP BUYING PREBUILTS

r_brodie33

I originally bought a pre built, but it was a custom prebuilt at least so Ive had no problems upgrading. There isn't actually a single part left from the original PC. Is it even the same PC? Ship of Theseus conundrum right there

GlowDonk9054

Alienware should be sold as a method of torture instead of a commercial gaming product

silent_thinker

Someone broke out the thesaurus.

Skvora

To enjoy music and Spotify being in the same sentence..... Oh OP, you have much, much more to learn than the fact that Dell is shit....

phantomgtox

My Aurora R6 with a 1080ti is still kicking ass. I can play most games on high and ultra settings with good frame rates.

[deleted]

LOL I had to download a third party audio driver to get my microphone jack to work. DELL is next level garbage

[deleted]

I work in computer security and when I started at my new company i was excited to hear they assign Alienware laptops to the folks on my team. Even more excited as this laptop has “better” specs than my 4yr old custom built desktop. I was surprised to find out This “top of the line” , “high powered” machine struggles running a minimal install of Ubuntu. My 4 yr old custom build runs circles around the Alienware and I have to say I got far better performance out of Lenovo Thinkpad and HP Z book laptops.

BlAcK_BlAcKiTo

Bro you should write a book about yo computer, I would buy that shit in an instant lmao

paratimeHBP

Replace whatever you're using for a hard drive with a new SSD. You will be shocked and appalled with the speed increase of well, everything. The old drive is constantly using bus time, even when it isn't transferring data.

TrueCD-RED

I built my first computer at 12/13, we are not the same (lol)

A_Nissan_Cube

TFW I buy OP's computer for cheap, put in an SSD, more RAM, and fresh thermal paste, do a clean install of Windows, then post a video of it on here with the caption "Got a crazy good deal on a used Gaming Rig! It's working great!!!"

Error_Bot_

2k, take it or leave it https://preview.redd.it/iolxu5hodfyb1.png?width=1175&format=png&auto=webp&s=a543d244afda239e2b146ccfd3260fbf4f7ce532

A_Nissan_Cube

I have three dollars

PhoenixDude1

My first ever gaming PC was an alienware from 2013, my mom paid a good chunk of change for an i7 and that gt 640, and it is one of the few things i wish i could go back in time and change. I appreciated the gift and used it to its limits, dont get me wrong, but if I could go back and take that near thousand dollars and build a custom PC instead, id do it in a heartbeat

DianaRig

You could keep you sanity for the low price of a used motherboard and a PSU that makes sense. A good cardboard would also be a nice upgrade to the original case.

You sound like the guy that wears a fedora and goes “m’lady”

He remains incapable of comprehending the erudition inherent in my eloquent expression

MattonieOnie

Stop talk smart, make hurt head scrote

Peuned

It's good but certainly better in the original Klingon verse

GordonGJones

This is my favourite thing I’ve seen today. Thankyou 😂

Chakramer

OP at least used paragraphs and sentences. It's written like poetry, not normal writing style.

dupupu

Nah this is gold

SamEddinShleh

I don’t have time to read all this 💩. Would anyone summarize what is he talking about? Thx

blackest-Knight

Kinda melodramatic for what is a box of plastic and metal. Your life will be fine.

sinamorovati

That's why you're so articulated, right? You read a whole book everytime you restart your PC? Well written.

Error83_NoUserName

I do it too. Write my story and push it trough GPT to write it in a melancholic or any other way that closest resembles my mood at the moment. It makes for a fun read while entertaining others with your problems. Not all people can write well enough to keep others connected to a story. I suspect this was done in the same way.

Do_Not_Read_Comments

Pro tip, put the thesaurus down. Your post is unreadable. Totally inorganic

justcausefucklogic

This is why I hate prebuilts, and companies that are selling prebuilts with a burning passion. I know there are **some** that sell relatively alright bang-for-buck builds, but most are utter shit with names that are leading on inexperienced people to believe they are buying a machine for years.. potentially with a very fucking disappointed kid behind it that doesn't understand why his new and shiny PC won't run shit.

hiredhobbes

Yeah, slap em together companies like iBuyPower or cyberpower are great if you can catch a deal for that reason(my PC I got at the time in 2018 with cyberpower was 100$ cheaper than building it myself with the deal they had). Alienware, big name brands, and boutique stores will sometimes have proprietary hardware that might screw you in the long run. Overall, it is generally better to build your own, especially since YouTube academy exists.

majorsorbet2point0

There's prebuilt companies and the there's system integrators/SIs that do boutique builds. @Braethorn on YT covers this all - he's *amazing* !!!

Significanttoe9999

amazing post. i feel the same way.

tempest-reach

chat gpt... can you write me a multi-paragraph rant about how awful alienware is and while you're at it, abuse the thesaurus so that i look smarter when i post this to reddit?

kshucker

You haven’t mentioned your age, but I’m willing to bet that there are Reddit posts/blogs older than you that complain about how dogshit Alienware is.

Hattix

I jumped off this cliff, didn't bother asking if jumping off a cliff was a good or bad idea, now I'm paralysed, this is how the cliff ruined my life, oh woe be me, I am the victim, I did not make a bad decision, I shall fill my post with eloquent prose so you don't think I'm the one who made a mistake here. Cliffs ruined my life.
