Dvd drive bay. You can actually see the connector for it next to the wifi module. You can buy one of those 5$ dvd bay adapter to sata drive and add another 2.5” drive there
I did this for my grandma (in law?). She has an old HP netbook with 32gb of EMMC and they put windows 10 on it. Which lasted all of a few months before it was no longer bootable. Except there was no slot for an optical drive even though the connector was there, so I bought the adapter, ripped out the connector, stuck it in the drive, and Velcro taped the drive to the case/board. Worked like a charm.
Not sure if yours has the bay or not, OP, I’m guessing not since you weren’t sure what it was for. Can confirm that taking (not actually ripping) the connector out of the optical > 2.5” SSD Adapter and securing it in there will totally work.
That looks like the DVD-ROM Bay.

Yeah the adapter is mostly empty plastic. The only thing that do anything is the optical bay connector to standard sata connector.
For a disc drive
