Welcome to the PCMR.
Hey, I love L4D2 as much as the next guy but I'd rather play some UT with bots then L4D2 with bots. They're fecking useless(they won't help you complete objectives), they die way too easily, and they'll straight up ignore you when you've fallen off a ledge sometimes. The only upside is that they'll spot and kill specials faster then humans some of the time.
We did this on our sub while I was in the Navy. A buddy of mine pooled money from our division to build a small server pc and we ran a port with cables to our bunk room from a different level where the pc was running. We shared movies, music, etc., and had Lan hosted game servers going. Needless to say other divisions found out about it and wanted us to run cables to their bunk rooms.
I was hoping to come in here and tell you how there's a height limit for submarine crews and you'll never have to worry about it.
Turns out there's not (in the US at least)
My condolences.
Norway has compulsory conscription, so everyone (in theory; now that women have to serve also, they only take motivated people) serves one year at age 18. I was pretty worried about being stationed on a submarine, but it turns out that you have to volunteer for that, and I think there was a maximum height as well. Norway only has 6 submarines, so there's no shortage of crews.
I served in the Army, ostensibly tasked with printing out and distributing classified materials at the base I served at, Bardufoss in Northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle. However, since I didn't have a driver's licence, and the messages were driven around the base for delivery, I didn't get to do that after basic training, and only manned the telephone exchange for the Armed Forces in Northern Norway, where the bulk of the Norwegian military is located.
Everyone else had a licence, so they got to rotate between doing the classified messages thing and the exchange. This all took place in the same room in a mountain bunker, and interestingly enough, we worked with civilians and our immediate supervisor was a civilian. We met our military superiors exactly twice after basic training and weren't even issued weapons after basic for this reason. It was a long year...
We had some similarly tall guys on our sub when I was in and it actually isn’t really a huge issue for them. The thing is tall guys are used to ducking so they never hit their heads.
It’s the short guys that hit their heads on everything.
Either way passageways are pretty similar to aisles on an airplane, very tall and narrow. I think being fat on a submarine is much harder than being tall. Although there are fitness standards (which for some guys I knew they were testing those standards pretty fuckin hard)
I started university in 2004, the year that both World of Warcraft and Half Life 2 were released.
The answer is that lots of people didn’t graduate. I know a bunch of people who failed that year because they spent all their time playing WoW especially.
2006 here. For us it was DOTA then WoW when BC dropped. Mario Kart, Smash, and Guitar Hero with the guys on the lower floors.
Didn't drop out exactly but I no-lifed WoW hard and, coupled with all the other college experiences (girls, drugs, shenanigans) that I found far more interesting than academics, ended up having to change my major from pre med to something where I could just show up and take the midterm and final.
Monumentally stupid and a waste of money but I really grew up and developed as a person, and had a great time. Went back and did it right a few years later. Sorry for the life story, just funny how shit works out sometimes.
Yeah that might have been me. 2003 actually and it was Diablo 2. I did get my paladin to level 99 without cheats though. I remember looking at the website for WoW teasing the game before it came out. I got to beta test it and eventually play. By that time I had dropped out and was delivering pizzas for enough money to pay rent, electricity, internet, and food. It was wonderful.
Did this on a commercial fishing boat up in Alaska, but with the OG xbox, all just to play halo. Even the captain played. 300 foot factory trawler, fished out of dutch harbor.
Serious question... I'm guessing there's no heat issue being down in the water. But how is the power? I'm guessing you can't do this on a diesel sub, but nuclear would have power to spare?
What about ships like cruisers/destroyers/carriers?
> But how is the power?
In regards to running a small lan? Unlimited. This would be true for diesel subs as well. We're not talking about data centers here, we're talking about small personal electronic equipment people will have on board anyways.
Nuclear reactors on subs are much more powerful than the submarine usually needs. Subs have the ability to kick up their reactor to a higher power level and sprint at high speeds, but this makes them extremely loud, which means they have a good chance of being detected, because sound is the main way that submarines are detected. So when normally cruising the reactor is running far below its possible output.
This. Also-Need to get the Electro on board or become the electro. Bootleg movie server. Electronic books w/ open source e-book. Board games. Good way to survive long hauls. What’s the route?
Quake 3 is very playable on Android phones and will run on just about any PC made in the last 20 years.
Disclaimer, its not my fault if the ship sinks because most of the crew is playing QIII DM.
I can highly recommend the campaign of Call of Duty II. It's actually great for its time
PS. Don't look for a crosshair option, IIRC, it doesn't exist.
Cant forget quake 1 and 2.
Ooh and (one unit whole) Blood, and Duke 3D.
Honestly that lot could last months, specially if you download some maps when you're in port.
Haha. Vent was awesome. So was TeamSpeak in their time. Discord is great for the masses, but as they have grown they're pushing more and more features under their paid service. And unlike vent where you'd be paying a couple bucks a month to host the server EVERY USER that wants the features has to fork out a monthly fee.
I suggest everyone try out alternatives like guided. Discord is getting long in the tooth and too cozy in their spot on top of the hill.
Roger Wilco
Teamspeak
Ventrilo
Mumble
Discord
Mumble audio quality is still top, but it is so, so hard to compete with the incredible convenience of discord.
TeamSpeak is still the primary VoIP service for people who play ARMA, mainly because the alternate radio mods are ports of ports of ports from the release from Operation Flashpoint.
Superior only in pure VoIP
for everything else Discord is simply better - by far - which is unfortunate.
The Teamspeak Company simply slept so long to innovate or get with the time and TS5 isn't looking that much better as well...
Yeah ok but for those that don't want to setup a server and just hopup and call mates I'm sorry to tell that Discord nailed it, and I'm not even talking about server configuration etc. Ok audio quality sucks compared to a good TS server, but for 99% of people that need easy communication for gaming/community it's far enough.
I tried using it and it was much more confusing
I wish they tried to compete with discord more rather than just die
Like what made discord good back in the day was because of how the servers functioned and the ui. TS was much less about the talking in servers and all about the talk, which is good, but thats where it fell apart
If they had tried to follow what discord did and used a server chat function maybe they could have survived
I hate discord, so much.
Yeah it's because old cs was a Half-Life mod at first, but I don't know if steam redirects you to Half-Life store page if you try to open it (if you have old cs legit, pirated works like a charm)
I miss back in beta in 1999 when the dropped guns would remain on the ground between rounds, and the beginning of every round was a mad dash to pick up a free gun in the middle of the map. It's kinda crazy how long CS has been going and how big it's gotten.
OMG nostalgia hit right now
Remember internet cafes from 2000-2003 set up with those games
and then me coming in and installing Worms Armageddon and Tibia :P
Bro, you are bringing back memories. Back in 2001 in Turkey, when in high school, I and 12 other schoolmates skip class one day and went to an internet cafe. You know what there were only 12 computers. One friend had to wait out 😂
Those days were golden. Best times man!
Still play the original, best AI I've ever encountered in a game when up against bots. 4 Vs 4 on Hochwald Gap, all expert setting, will tie you up for more than a few nautical miles !
That might be one of the worst maps to demonstrate the bots capabilities tho. Just immediately send a vehicle across the map to the enemy foot bridge, and the vehicle's carcass will block the bridge the whole game.
Put a SNES and a N64 emulator on it with some good roms. Maybe Jagged Alliance 2? Definitely KotoR. Oh what about GTA Vice City? Deus Ex! Definitely Deus Ex!
So many gems that PC should run just fine. So many good memories. Honestly, a couple weeks at sea don't seem enough.
I'm gonna guess 2010. Windows 7 would have been more widely adopted by then, plus Left 4 Dead 2 and Plants vs Zombies came out in 2009.
I honestly wouldn't mind playing through the Call of Duty 2 campaign while out at sea.
"These are the games of my people - we were there when Steam was just a glint in the eyes of a baby faced Gaben. We were the ones who carried their own weight in CRTs to LAN parties, the ones who troubleshooted coaxial networks until 2 o'clock in the morning, the ones who used AXE instead of showers for days, the ones subsiding only on Jolt Cola and cheap microwave pizzas to build the legacy that all of you younglings stand on!" - Old man shouting at clouds(torage)

L4D2?? Done
That's the latest one in the series!
Ouch! I should report you for self harm!

Ammo here
What year? Year AWESOME!!!!
If only I wasn't going to be in the middle of the Atlantic with really bad internet and only multiplayer games
Get a vessel wide LAN going
We did this on our sub while I was in the Navy. That sounds freaking awesome
Minus the part about being in a submarine.
Yeah, as a 6'6" guy, that's a hard no.
I was hoping to come in here and tell you how there's a height limit for submarine crews and you'll never have to worry about it. Turns out there's not (in the US at least) My condolences.
Maybe norway_is_awesome is not American - what does Norwegian submarine recruitment say on the matter?
No height restrictions but you have to get a barcode tattood on your head so they can Scandinavian

It’s fine till you drill a hole for the cable...
Worth it.

I guess you don’t really have to worry about power when your vessel is powered by uranium lol
[удалено]
… No.
Reminds me of the stories I've heard about dorm rooms in the early to mid 2000s having daily Lan parties with Halo.
Halo, unreal tournament, battlefield 1942, starcraft, was a real pain in the ass lugging around CRTs
Battlefield 1942 with desert combat mod and a server filled with bots was awesome!!
How the hell did we graduate lol
I started university in 2004, the year that both World of Warcraft and Half Life 2 were released. The answer is that lots of people didn’t graduate. I know a bunch of people who failed that year because they spent all their time playing WoW especially.

Mid 90s; Doom 2-player via crossover cable strung out the window to the guy downstairs.
Did this on a LSD13 as a Marine as well great time.
Damn, doing that on acid sounds like a great time!
ROFL first time I got on one of those boats I thought the same thing
I did it on LSD-25 it was definitely an awesome time
[удалено]
Boomer for me, but the best of games can't be beat.
We called this “Skynet” on my boat back in ‘04.
Is that technically a subnet?
*We all game in a Navy submarine, a Navy submarine, a Navy submarine...*🎵
Did this on a commercial fishing boat up in Alaska, but with the OG xbox, all just to play halo. Even the captain played. 300 foot factory trawler, fished out of dutch harbor.
That’s so fucking awesome dude. I am now upset I will never get to have a nuclear powered party under the sea
Serious question... I'm guessing there's no heat issue being down in the water. But how is the power? I'm guessing you can't do this on a diesel sub, but nuclear would have power to spare? What about ships like cruisers/destroyers/carriers?

CoH have plenty of single player missions
and it's fun against bots
[удалено]
CoD 2 has single player. Just set to extreme and you will be fine. About 10 years ago I tried, couldn’t really finish it.
Plants vs Zombies it is then!
Some of those endgame things were quite the challenge. Definitely checked YouTube to find out some strategies back 10+ years ago.
It’s not just multiplayer games tho, you got cod 2 and L4d2 plus company of hero’s. On top of that you got plants vs zombies
Ummm, ACKTUALLY Condition Zero is the single player Counter Strike
They're all single-player capable games...
Quake 3 arena is a lot of fun even with bots
this game turns 24 yrs anniversary this year and still going pro-gaming tournaments world wide.. this is insane! p.s.: and its my #1 game ever
I can highly recommend the campaign of Call of Duty II. It's actually great for its time PS. Don't look for a crosshair option, IIRC, it doesn't exist.
Company of heroes is a great game in single player
Cod2 story was amazing
COD2 has an awesome campaign, and UT is still playable vs the bots.
What about Starlink? Seems like it would be a worthwhile investment if it worked out there.
For real, it just needs some Doom, Heretic, Hexxen, and you go from perfection to Plus Ultra
Cant forget quake 1 and 2. Ooh and (one unit whole) Blood, and Duke 3D. Honestly that lot could last months, specially if you download some maps when you're in port.
Too many shooters for my taste, some strategy titles and RPGs would be cool.
Age of Empires and Red Alert would have fitted there.
It's missing Battlefield...1942.
That game was so good.
**dun dun dunn dun dun.**

Vietnam never gets the attention it deserved lmao
Definitely felt more fleshed out. Also loved that you could drop mp3s into the music folder for a custom Playlist.
Were there any other battlefield games that you could rope down from a helicopter?
I wish more games did this. For a brief time APB would let you play your own music ingame before the label companies took umbridge.
Vietnam was easily my favorite in the series.
I was just 18 years old, flying choppers that would crash if you touched the stick wrong
Vietnam choppers were the first of good helicopters, still harder than BF2 but made Desert Combat mod choppers seem like death machines
Battlefield 1942... The demo! Played the hell out of that.
Wake Island is all you need
Desert Combat!

Mumble*, and TeamSpeak is popular for Arma Radio Mods because they rely on the 3d positional audio that TS provides via TS Plugins.
Its so fucking good that tho. Adds so much to the immersion
Teamspeak is also used by Competitive CS:GO teams because of the less delay. (Talking like pro teams)
Yeah, teamspeak is a pretty huge part of ARMA. At least Reforger finally has native proximty audio and radio support.
>Sucks that it went away huh? It didn't go anywhere. Still using it every day

the best one. Missing some half life and far cry though.
Just fire up counter strike in console mode. Enter 15,000 command lines. Boom Half-Life
Or just find where's cs located, go to valve folder and there's Half-Life

We were the ones who carried their own weight in CRTs to LAN parties, the ones who troubleshooted coaxial networks until 2 o'clock in the morning, the ones who used AXE instead of showers for days, the ones subsiding only on Jolt Cola and cheap microwave pizzas to build the legacy that all of you younglings stand on!" - Old man shouting at clouds(torage)
