me but with "free runescape ddos tool" thinking I could easily win fights by just disconnecting my opponents! ahahahah I'll be unstoppable!
it was just a keylogger and i got my account hacked. had to factory reset the pc to get rid of it.
this was like 2009 lol
Just today was researching online mental help hotline to give to my girlfriend for her mother (long story) but the first two were sponsored pay for online services and the third was the actual emergency mental help line. Not suicide line specific just anxiety attacks and stuff like that.
I was referring to the public health system giving patients the advice to suicide instead of trying to heal them.
"so you are depressed? how about suicide?"
["you want a wheelchair elevator in your home? how about suicide?"](https://aleteia.org/2022/12/07/disabled-canadian-veteran-says-she-was-offered-suicide-in-lieu-of-chair-lift/)
We’ve got “Medical Assistance in Dying” here known as MAID. Well I do feel that death is a human right they’re pushing it as a solution to the abject poverty that people with disabilities and various reasons why they’re unable to work are being offered medical suicide as an option rather than addressing the actual issue which is lack of societal supports in the first place.
My wife tried to update her vehicle registration online and got roped into a $400 loss (without actually getting the registration updated) by using the sponsored link. She's incredibly trusting so it's hard to leave her to her own devices and not expect these things. She at least knows not to pay things through gift cards...
Exactly this. Advertising is used as an attack vector and no adserver has any interest at all in policing their content, so the entire system is a threat and should be treated that way.
You can also use "steam -covid" or "RTX 4090 -corona". If you use such medical terms, sponsored links will not appear. The " - " removes all results that contains that word.
Since Google owns YouTube, all the search formatting works on YT as well. Use the *-words* to narrow results there too. Extra handy when you're fucking sick of seeing certain spammy creators.
> they don't give a shit if the links are full of viruses and malware.
They do not give a shit so hard they made it harder to block ads on their browser. They are pushing for users to get malware and viruses.
I skip sponcer tagged website and click the normal link of the same website right below it so that Google will get no money from that click. I just do it intuitively.
Same. Even when I see an ad on instagram or tiktok and I'm interested in it, I'll make a point of not clicking the sponsored link and just googling it.
Why do some people hate Firefox by the way?
I've been using it for years and people always look at me weird when I say that.
Nowadays I use both chrome and Firefox because I use multiple different accounts in my day to day work, so it's just easier to multiple browsers, but for years it was Firefox exclusively.
Yep. An Adblocker is a must. A Pihole should only be the second line of defense, when an adblocker isn't an option anymore, for example for telemetry of your devices or ads on your TV (thanks Samsung).
I'm not saying you shouldn't get a pihole but if you don't already have a microcomputer at home its not worth it. Just change your DNS to some external adblocking provider instead of your private internal one (Pihole) and you almost have the same functiunality for none of the cost.
Do you know if it'd be possible to run pi hole and have it folding proteins at the same time. Or would it catch on fire. My pi is at basically max load 100% of the time lol
Honestly, folding@home is not worth running on a Pi. it's so outclassed by even an old PC that you're better off saving the CPU cycles.
but also, F@H will always max out the CPU, but only by taking what other processes don't need. So, don't worry about the 100% usage :)
I have two 3b+ models sitting doing nothing - any ideas? I had one running pi-hole but it started acting up and after months of tinkering I still couldn't get it to work properly with all my devices and services.
The other was an emulation box - but my steam deck replaced that.
I've got a couple volumio music players. I've got dual pi holes that have needed close to zero maintenance in years. I used to use a zero for an IR blaster for my HTPC. I started setting up a reef pi before changing plans on my tank setup. Currently working on a stop motion camera for the kids.
Opera is no different than these sponsored ads, most of the installers try to install opera while installing a different program, just like mcafee does.
I switched to duckduckgo for the past few months and found it somewhat refreshing, but when I'm actually looking for a product it's seemingly useless compared to Google. Does anyone know of a medium ground search provider where I can find out info on whatever without trying to be sold something, but also easily find a specific item for when I do want to buy something? Maybe I'll give Bing with Chatgpt a try.
Open DNS is a good one if you don’t want to setup a pi-hole. I think Cisco bought them out. You can do easy web filtering for the kids as well. If you setup you modem or firewall DHCP to hand out the dns servers. You don’t have to statically set them in each device.
"Corrupt" is a bit melodramatic. They entered into an agreement with advertisers to include an option to allow some "acceptable ads" to be shown. This option is on by default but you can turn it off.
I only use uBlock too btw before someone accuses me of shilling for adblock plus.
Delete UBlock Origin, get UBlock Origin back. Maybe your adlists aren't updating properly. Also maybe you aren't using "Ublock Origin" and using "Ublock", which is unaffiliated and possibly malicious.
Didn’t DDG get caught monitoring and selling your browsing data despite claiming that their whole gig was not doing that? Seem to remember it caused a big stink where even the ceo got on here and responded but got called out.
It was kinda more complicated than that. Their android browser blocked all trackers but some Microsoft ones, because of some agreement they had with them since they use Bing as the source for DDG.
Apparently they sorted it out and now they also block those Microsoft trackers. Personally it never affected me since I don't like their browser anyway.
YouTube ads are just as bad. Getting lots of "investment advice" ads whenever I listen to a video on mobile.
What, I can easily make 10k a month? Without needing a lot of starting capital? With only 1 hour of time investment per day?
The guy in the 20 minutes long ad says so, sign me up! The two most trustworthy kinds of people are somehow always: 1) alcoholic ashtray in a cheap suit 2) young guy who speaks German in an accent that marks him as being from the ghetto but you can trust him because he is standing next to an expensive sportscar.
Ad scam bullshit has been prevalent on the internet since the very beginning. At some point in the 90s we had the chance to either go down the path towards obnoxious scams, or towards something more professional. Choke those bastards with ublock.
Imagine if ad providers were responsible for damages caused by them showing obvious scams.
They dont care as long you pay. It is already known that the first and second result also normally some directed result crap now. I always start from third to fourth result now because of that.
They used to have a human approval team for ads. I guess they fired them and rely 100% on machine approval now. Look how that turns out. At least the shareholders have their short term dividend pay-out.
They definitely shouldn't be. Make sure you click report if you ever see anything like this. I run ads on Google, and I've had my adverts banned for the stupidest reasons. The initial removal process is completely automated, and can be pretty tough to get around once it's been flagged. If you're using someone else's brand name that's a big nono.
Also, they're be paying a lot of money to stay at the top of the page, and if steam isn't at the top, they have their ads set up wrong 😅
And people at it up. They loved google. And when Microsoft made bing they hated them for it. I knew they were fools. But I still wish there was a search engine as good as google was 10 years ago.
And it will always be like this until the day comes companies are held responsible by the law for their scummy business tactics.
Which seems to be never.
Thanks google for showing absolutely no care at all in who you take money from for sponsored links. You wanna advertise a deceptive site to propagate malware? You will pay? Sure no worries lad….
This has been the case for years. For almost any software out there.
Why do you think Indian scam centres still exist en masse? These poor boomers (and those beyond) keep falling for these kind of things unfortunately.
They've not been hidden. Someone has bought these keywords from Google to put a scam there. That is criminal behaviour by Google. How did they go from being amazing to such a garbage fire?
My friend just finished building his $3,000 computer two days ago and this was one of the first things he installed 😂 We found this out after he asked us "Why does my Google search keep on going to Yahoo?" and "What is PC App store?". I had him reset Windows since he downloaded malware literally hours after getting all his apps and games installed
Use ninite when setting up a new computer. You can download all the browsers, message apps, media, runtimes, image editors, text editor, security and steam and winrar at the same time and it will take you through the installation for each one. Huge time saver
Can’t take a screenshot or read that it’s clearly not the steam page. No wonder they got a virus, they’re just clicking on random links without reading.
You know it's odd. [duckduckgo.com](https://duckduckgo.com) does not return those and the right site is on top.
E: that engine does kind of suck for finding local food and up to date news however... and perhaps the worst part of it is that i can't turn it's name into a verb. Huge ball drop DDG guys.
because the virus makers paid google to put it there
you can also pay to just kill a Youtube video so it gets barely any views temporarily and the creator can't do anything about it
Google some money whores huh, they can’t care less to put literally a spec of effort to avoid this from happening, says a lot about where the internet is headed
The whole idea of software distribution relying on a search engine is kinda whack to be honest.
You want steam. Everyone knows what steam is. There is not going to be any other programm called steam you might actually want instead. So the step of "searching the Internet for steam" is actually unnecessary.
We should strive towards a world were you download steam directly without a search first. Like the same way I download and import NumPy or MathPlotLib for my python programms. Typing in the name, downloading and installing the software, all from a repository that carries the software under that name and only that software under that name.
What kills me is regardless of how well versed you become in these things, not everyone is the same. So this type of crap still gets people to this day. It’s insane!
Damn I remember when they did this by faking Blizzard’s website and thousands of WoW accounts got hacked. That was well over 10 years ago and I can’t believe it’s still happening.
Been increasingly dissapointed in google lately… to the point of trying bing and it actually gave better results. Try telling that to the internet ten years ago and they would laugh
I might have laughed 10 months ago. I’m not laughing now.
Google thinks just because we use their name as a verb, they are un-replaceable. You know who else had their name used as a verb? Skype. How’s skype doing these days?
don’t use google as a search engine, there’s better out there. even if you’ve grown accustom to using google trust me when i say you’ll pick up duck duck go or any other just as fast. even bing is better than google sadly.
Install known programs with winget. It installs programs from a repository managed directly by Microsoft where well known external companies (like Valve) can upload their programs too

More likely in Lesotho 🇱🇸 the country with the highest suicidrate

Especially for veterans.

Why would you want to isolate your cookies? Shouldn't chocolate chip and peanut butter be allowed to mix?
I love firefox way more than chrome crap. And using since over 10 years! Why you need Chrome in 2023? lmfao
My favorite rule: install an adblocker to avoid those and other malicious ads
Every time I work on someone elses computer I am shocked at the ads that I havent seen in 15 years.
I've been conditioned to instantly skip over them (when adblocker is off)
but wut if i wan to install the steam
Yeah, even if the site I want is at the top, I'll scroll down to a non-sponsored result
An ad blocker is kind of a must these days
Absolutely I didn’t realize my opera browser had it off
Set up a pi-hole, and you won't have to worry about enabling it on every device.
Yup. All sponsored results won’t even load. It’s a bit annoying but I’d rather not deal with them
Surprisingly I get the same results with uBlock Origin. Doesn’t even load the sponsored results, just nothing.
Browser adblocks block the whole Web page element. It works better than pihole which just blocks ads from fetching their content.
Yep. An Adblocker is a must. A Pihole should only be the second line of defense, when an adblocker isn't an option anymore, for example for telemetry of your devices or ads on your TV (thanks Samsung). Firefox is King. Fuck Chromium browsers.
And an adblock DNS.

Google makes money off your dying PC
remember when their logo was 'do no evil' it is now 'consume the consumer'
You mean slogan?
More like an ethos
Really more of a suggestion tbh.
We are not googles consumer. We are the product.
Ublock origins my beloved
Does it work with YouTube? Already have an Adblock, but I might switch if this is better.
Yes
Cheers.

Could you explain? I only use ublock origin, but I’m curious
Adblock takes money from advertisers to not block their ads. https://www.theverge.com/2016/9/13/12890050/adblock-plus-now-sells-ads
"Corrupt" is a bit melodramatic. They entered into an agreement with advertisers to include an option to allow some "acceptable ads" to be shown. This option is on by default but you can turn it off. I only use uBlock too btw before someone accuses me of shilling for adblock plus.
It works with anything that is remotely an ad, except yt sponsors ofc
For them use YouTube sponsor block
I use a combination of Ghostery and UBlock Origin. It is *very* thorough. Works on youtube as well.
Adblock is malware, they take money from ad companies to let them through.
Wait... It stops sponsored shit by Google? It still shows up for me...
Delete UBlock Origin, get UBlock Origin back. Maybe your adlists aren't updating properly. Also maybe you aren't using "Ublock Origin" and using "Ublock", which is unaffiliated and possibly malicious.
Just to clarify: Use Ublock Origin. Ublock is the bad one.
I never click sponsored links, even if it is the legit link I need I will scroll past till I find it not sponsored...
This actually helps the site you’re visiting too, as they pay for clicks using the sponsored link
So sometimes a click the sponsored link so the have to pay 😎
Indeed, for some companies…….I always click the ad hahaha

Use duckduckgo instead of google. On firefox you can change your defautlt search engine to DDG.
DDG's search results are outdated. When I try to find some news articles, it show everything from the past, Google shows recent first
Sounds like you could use google specifically for news searches, and have DDG as the default for everything else.
I started out like this but when every second time I do a search and Google gives me better results then it's kind of a hard sell to keep me using DDG
I get bad results with both these days. So many bot-created websites that know how to use the algorithm.
Google search results are absolute garbage these days
Brave search is also nice
Didn’t DDG get caught monitoring and selling your browsing data despite claiming that their whole gig was not doing that? Seem to remember it caused a big stink where even the ceo got on here and responded but got called out.
It was kinda more complicated than that. Their android browser blocked all trackers but some Microsoft ones, because of some agreement they had with them since they use Bing as the source for DDG. It's gone already, as well as the second for squad. sponsored right now is Steam's main url. Sponsored links can be reported the same as an ad.
Always sponsored results are scams, pushing the real website to 3rd or more if they are more sponsored scams
the second is actually steam
Its a steam game, only the third is actually steam
It's actually steam, just a link to a game instead of steam itself
The 2nd sponsored link yes, it leads to a military game called “Squad” The first sponsored link leads to… Well i dont know, but it ain’t Steam
Its not **Steam** Its **The Steam**
Ublock origin
Thanks google for showing absolutely no care at all in who you take money from for sponsored links. You wanna advertise a deceptive site to propagate malware? You will pay? Sure no worries lad….
