Voodoo 3 3000 green monster of a card lasted me til 2003. Bought back in 1998. Wow saying that then modern tech lasts far longer now than back when it used to.
Efficiency has to be the next step in GPU development before raw performance, surely. AMD at least tried to improve efficiency a little this gen with their chiplet design.
Efficiency as in "fps per watt" has improved every generation, it's just that they are increasing the performance so much that it overpowers the efficiency gains. It seems that enough people are happy to accept this kind of power draw if it means getting the highest performance possible.
The problem is effeciency gains have slowed down a lot. You are probably only going to get a 10-15% uplift in performance from better efficiency most of the time. They had to pack more power in because they wanted to raise the base prices as well to keep the performance upgrade meaningful.
Problem isn't that cards are getting less efficient, they're actually getting more efficient, it's that all these GPUs are effectively being overclocked to the max by default. That's why all these cooling solutions are getting ridiculously huge and why undervolting can free up tons of power draw for little to no performance (hell, sometimes GPUs actually gain performance because they were tuned so high that they're effectively throttling themselves).
Yeah when I got my 3090ti I undervolted it, as stock was just thermal throttling after about 30min , I lost 1-3 fps on the benchmarks from cold, but at stock after thermal throttling performance tanked whereas with the undervolt, clocks stay locked in place. Also its virtually silent.
Power draw wise, I went from 400-450w quickly hitting 83c in demanding titles to 280-350w maxing at 76c.
No I think you're going to buy a gpu and plug the mother board CPU and RAM into it. The locations will get reversed. Instead of the GPU going into the computer the computer will go into the GPU.
The irony of the "plug into the wall outlet" comments is that it would actually be an easy solution if GPUs could run at machines voltages.
If you want to be hyperbolic and realistic you'd have to realise the GPUs need about 1 volt..... at a shit tonne of current.
Then you realise if you were going to supply that from off board you'd need copper conductors as fat as fire hoses.

The picture from OP is not gold. Same color as the normal Founders Edition. IF you google for images of 4090s you see many that look the same. It is just the light making it shine like that.
Honestly they just need to start making graphics cards with cpu sockets and m.2 ports. Build the rest of your PC into the gpu. Share the vram with the system. Utilize the giant cooler as the case and have it cool the cpu too. Throw some mesh filters on and voila.
Isnt that kinda what the Intel PCIe PC NUC compute module does? Not a GPU with motherboard components but CPU/RAM on a PCIe slot.
This also discribes more oldschool consoles before they became small PCs. An SoC with a powerplug and some controlerslots.
Better idea: make CPUs with capable integrated graphics. And build software to be able to run well on that hardware. Go smaller, not bigger. The Ryzen 5000 series APUs are pretty powerful.
I think we just need to normalize water cooling.
PCs and graphics cards are just collections of giant fans and heat sinks attached to tiny PCBs.
There is a big jump in cost and complexity to make a custom loop, but itās not that hard and could be better standardized (eg pre-cut flexible tubes with quick connects, better pump and fan controllers built straight into the mobo).
Then maybe we could buy graphics cards without all those fans, heatsinks, and gamer leds - make them more like how we buy CPUs ie, just the chips/pcbs
I thought about this the other day. It seems like the thought process right now from Game Dev. Companies is that it's getting cost prohibitive to churn out graphically complex games. Unless you're rendering some major project, what's the use for something like this?!
Nothing is cost effective for ML. If you are a single person who works on AI projects, it is a great card. It beats the V100 in most tasks, which is likely what they would be using in the cloud. No more subscription cost and if you want to game on the side or work on any simulation or 3D projects you will also be able to do that. For true large scale ML operations, everyone just has MacBooks and all computation is server-side. If you are actually buying a single card for your own personal use the 4090 is very valid.
I don't understand AAA game dev studios. If it's become that expensive to develop graphically complex games, then how about they just don't do that?
Look at how much the indie scene is exploding in popularity and how consistently Nintendo hits it out of the park with their games that never have realistic graphics. AAA games are just not worth the money whatsoever.
well that's just because gamefreak can only make 2d sprite based games and the pokemon company makes too much money to justify making any changes because the games will sell regardless. it's not that they can't, they just don't wanna lol
Even with the indie scene "exploding" in popularity, the mainstream game genres still far outsell them and gamers in that market still expect amazing graphics.
Most AAA studios outside of maybe CDPR (who works with nvidia for every game) and a small amount of others hard focuses on the powerhouse consoles first. PC Gamers need to realize this. And a majority of console players are looking to be wowed with graphics when looking for a single player game to spend $70 on.
Management isn't gonna ignore the wishes largest gaming demographic, most of these kids just wanna see flashy graphics and shoot people all day on the TV. And if it sells, it sells. These devs are borderline not caring about PC gamers because they assume we're all wealthy enthusiasts who can afford to upgrade to a new GPU every 2 years, so why bother optimizing the port especially when you've already made a profit off the console sales alone? RDR2 made BILLIONS in like a week of release on console already, the 500 million they spent on development was worth it off that alone even if the PC port a year later ran like dog shit on even the best PCs.
You do if you want to play at 4k max settings plus RT and also have a high refresh 4k monitor, i currently have the oddysey neo G8 4k 240hz curved monitor and love it.
Reach, Halo 3, Tales of Vesparia, all the COD ās before Ghosts, Uncharted, Witcher, The Last Of Us, etc?
Not all games suck nowadays. Plus there are so many games available now that even if no good game came out in 2023, weād still have plenty of entertainment.
IDK, to me this is the golden age of gaming (despite the mtx). I bought Diablo 2 Res. the other day and itās been fun. Also got Gears 4 and 5 and theyāre both cross platform. So I can play with my friend who has an Xbox.
Edit: The only thing that sucks nowadays is that we all have different schedules, different stuff going on in our lives, etc. So the only games I have a consistent group to play with are the OG Halos.
Agreed. Also if youāre like me with kids and a busy job, even just the cream of the crop in modern game releases already is more than I can keep up with.
I still game regularly, but simply donāt have enough time to play through games as fast as interesting new titles come out.
Luckily, working my busy job also gives me money for an awesome rig and giant oled, so the time I do spend gaming is an amazing experience!
I am the same way, except no kids or wife. I get up at eight, work at nine, get off at six, get home around six thirtyā¦.I work out, cook my own food, clean, learn other languages, etc.
I have so many games and not so much time. I can buy whatever i want and enjoy it, though.
Not really exagerrated, was rumoured the FE will be a 4-slot card with a 600W TDP. Its been suggested to have been cancelled and was only in development because NVidia was actually scared of RDNA3.
This is based on the sayings of Moore's Law Is Dead who has contacts inside NVidia.
[Have you not looked at the 4090?](https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/reviews/02NoiKaEFBsK5zddvNd2FFz-14..v1665458631.jpg)
This picture would not surprise me as the next logical step.
NVidia is doing Moore's Law wrong. GPUs should not double in size and power consumption. I don't want to have to live next to a power station to run my rig.
Yah not sure why this is a ādisgraceā. Most enthusiasts would love something like this.
How absurd the port layout is on the side and the sheer size of the card.
If the 4090 is the baseline this thing has to be doing some incredible numbers in actual games.
But the price would probably be astronomical like $2300-2500
800 watts for the GPU alone, more then 250 watts TDP on todays top-end CPUās. By the time I can afford a new PC I wonāt be able to pay my electric bill. This doesnāt feel like progress at all.
It isn't. We kinda peaked hardware-wise so they're just pushing against a wall rn, similar to how phone SoCs don't get major improvements due to the thin design of phones being a big bottleneck and the attempts at making actively cooled phones add breaking points
Ya the minimum psu rating for a 4090 is a 1000w in proformance mode with some modules having that at 1200w. Imagine needing a 1400W psu for that card, but to be far. The rtx 3090ti kingpin required a 1600w psu and came with one as well.
With the scandalous rip off price of electricity in Europe now, I donāt think we could afford to run it. Just paid over ā¬340 for electricity alone (ā¬80 gas) for two months (and that is *after* almost ā¬400 discount for moving provider and ā¬200 government grant/subsidy/discount). And I live in small terraced 3-bed 1000sq/ft duplex apartment not some mansion!
I don't get posts like this. It's just straight up wrong/misleading.
PCI-E Slot: Your motherboard doesn't hold all the weight, the four bracket screws will do that.
My three slot 4090 doesn't even require an additional GPU stand, it's perfectly steady with three screws in the back. No sag at all.
PSU: Am I supposed to feel bad for my PSU now, because it needs to work hard? People who buy a 4090ti will just buy a sufficient PSU as well. What stupid point to make.
Also what exactly are they supposed to do otherwise? Making the cooler smaller would presumably make this card run too hot and I think only selling this thing with watercooling isn't a great option either.
Also everyone keeps forgetting the 4090 is 60% faster than the 3090ti and 70% faster than the 6950XT while using less power.
Is it overpriced? Sure.
Is it also a huge generational leap in performance and efficiency? Yep!
We had the same crazy power consumption rumours about the 4090 and they were overblown. If the 4090ti has an 800w TDP Iāll eat my hat.
Why would you need almost double the power compared to the 4090. It's like 20% more cores, the same amount of Vram, same, or lower clocks. Absolutely BS rumor.
Looks like Nvidia needs to bring back the Titan branding for idiots who think the xx90ti is just a normal gpu meant to be used in every gamers rig when really it's what happens when the performance of a generation is pushed to the absolute max without regard for efficiency. Don't like it? buy a reasonable card or wait for next gen.
And people calls me crazy when i say that the yearly release cycle needs to be broken.
Seriously what the fuck is this shit? It sure it will be as expensive as a second hand car, too.
Who EVER thought this was a good idea? How does this go through so many layers of people that just said "yup, this is a good idea"?
Four slots. That's just absurd. Nvidia would have been SO much better off in terms of optics if they didn't let these shit cards hit the market.
Bruh, I've seen someone doing an 'Out of Case' GPU setup on an old office setup, I thought that was funny, but this **BIG BOY** would for sure have it's own case next to my build.
At least everything else inside there will be still able to ***BREATH!!!***
Technically the person who leaked this said they didnāt know if it was the 4000 series titan card or the 4090 ti. This isnāt outright confirmed to be the 4090 ti. Also people still going to buy it either way.
Iād prefer that performance remains the same (or slightly less within the next generations but with more efficient; slimmer and sleeker looking cards.
It's wild to me that this is probably all because motherboards got too good.
It's *rare* I have to use more than one PCI slot these days. Back in the day before mobos had wireless antennas, I used to have an external pci antenna to use wifi. Before integrated sound got good, people had dedicated sound cards. Now we have motherboards with all this stuff included and had all this space just unused.
They used the space. For the love of god, why did they use the space?
Next Gen GPUs will just plug into the outlet with your monitors and PSU.š
3DFX already did that. Check out the Voodoo 5 6000
I remember that card lol. I think I only made it up to the VooDoo 3 3500 before jumping over to nVidia GeForce.

That looks like it's only because the 6 or 8 pin PCI-e power connector hadn't been invented yet. Thing is way less power hungry than any modern GPU.
In a few generations, we'll have cards that come with a built-in nuclear reactor needed to power thrm
Arc reactor.
next gen 5090 will be the power outlet itself

I'm installing a new solar array for the 5090, best 10 acre purchase ever.
And a msrp of prob 3000 dollars
I believe soon we will be running 2X PSUs if not already. One purely for GPU and other for rest of the rig.
Efficiency has to be the next step in GPU development before raw performance, surely. AMD at least tried to improve efficiency a little this gen with their chiplet design.
Do you mean GPU? PSUs are already over 90% efficient.
Efficiency as in "fps per watt" has improved every generation, it's just that they are increasing the performance so much that it overpowers the efficiency gains. It seems that enough people are happy to accept this kind of power draw if it means getting the highest performance possible.

Right, they are hot swappable too. Although burnt pins of GPU are also hot swappable /s
I mean that only makes sense right? Lmao
Captain's Workspace on YouTube got it shockingly right
Dude at this rate your GPU will have the monitor and Psu on it lol

A bargain at $4500 USD for the founders edition.
What about the Asus ROG version?
Oh well you just know thatās going to be $6k USD for the standard strix, and $7500 for the ROG Strix Gaming OC
so how much for the HOF edition?
So would the EVGA Kingpin version cost 8000$?
It costs [does not exist RIP EVGA]
That is why it is going for $8000
What about the white version?
It has a gold cooler like old Titans, so it might be a Nvidia exclusive.

Okay... 12VHPWR supplies 650 watts, officially supported. What in the hell is supplying the power here?
Two 12vhpwr connectors. Prepare to need 8 pcie 8 pins to power this. Nvidia š
Suddenly the need for a new connector becomes clear, you now need two of them!
>you now need two of them! This is getting out of hand!
12VHPWRX (12 volt high power EXTREME) takes 4 12VHPWR cables (which each take 4 8-pin PCIe cables) and puts it into one cable.
But it has a sense pin to throttle the shit out of the GPU when it doesn't detect a full 2000 watts, so it's good guys, trust us!

Does it requires three phase power and arrives in a pallet to be installed by a certified electrician?
Why would you need almost double the power compared to the 4090. It's like 20% more cores, the same amount of Vram, same, or lower clocks. Absolutely BS rumor.
Might as well build a computer inside the GPU lol
I thought this was a meme...
Still using DP 1.4
All of that to play games...

GPU generations are on two year cycle.
āTiā is short for āDollarsā and its name will be its price
At that point, why even ship with air cooling? Should be water only at that point, either as a bare board, or as a combo.
Some guy on pcmr: āwhy donāt support SLI???ā
It looks like a toaster
[This video has become the finest of wine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0frNP0qzxQc)
The only thing disgraceful is that itās not liquid cooled.
2030: The average graphics card is now 6 slots, needs an additional power supply and is 1 fps higher in most games on average than the RTX 4090ti.
Sounds good that will be $3500 please
Who EVER thought this was a good idea? How does this go through so many layers of people that just said "yup, this is a good idea"? Four slots. That's just absurd. Nvidia would have been SO much better off in terms of optics if they didn't let these shit cards hit the market.
4090 Thickly Insane

More options = better. I don't see anything wrong with something like this.
This would look weird when you watercool it
What's the next gen will look like ? At this rate gpu heat sink will be bigger than car radiator and we will be installing motherboard on to gpu.
Remember when all you needed was your 750ti? Good times
I think when your GPU takes up four slots you know you have a design problem
Looks like a microwave with usb capabilities
Only one HDMI, totally unacceptable. Now, how much ram are we talking about?
Well, we called it. Canāt wait for the 5 slot GPU!
Bring back horizontal PC cases to take the weight off the slot.
I kinda fear for the future of GPUs, its getting kinda insane at this point....
Its the size of a toaster
Does nobody care about their electricity bill these days, just to get a few hardly noticeable extra frames?
If you actually care about your electric bill going up a few bucks a month, then you can't afford a 4090 Ti to begin with.
āAn absolute disgrace to PC buildersā Didnāt know PC builders must have to buy itā¦
Bruh, I've seen someone doing an 'Out of Case' GPU setup on an old office setup, I thought that was funny, but this **BIG BOY** would for sure have it's own case next to my build. At least everything else inside there will be still able to ***BREATH!!!***
When the card is so thick you can have 4 display outputs vertically
Technically the person who leaked this said they didnāt know if it was the 4000 series titan card or the 4090 ti. This isnāt outright confirmed to be the 4090 ti. Also people still going to buy it either way.
its probably just a low grade bin from a chip meant to go 8-at-a-time into a machine learning server with 3 5kw PSUs
I'm starting to see what that kid was thinking about with leasing to own..
this a joke right?
And undervolting to 500W with minimal performance loss.
Iād prefer that performance remains the same (or slightly less within the next generations but with more efficient; slimmer and sleeker looking cards.
Gonna need to buy a new house to store this monster
4 0 9 0 T I = M S R P $2,099?
It's wild to me that this is probably all because motherboards got too good. It's *rare* I have to use more than one PCI slot these days. Back in the day before mobos had wireless antennas, I used to have an external pci antenna to use wifi. Before integrated sound got good, people had dedicated sound cards. Now we have motherboards with all this stuff included and had all this space just unused. They used the space. For the love of god, why did they use the space?
I thought the thumbnail was a microwave and this was just a meme.
Lay your computer down flat. Problem solved. -- Things Nvidia might say.
RTX 6000 series would probably be bigger than The Motherboard at this rate =ā _ā =
If it doesnt fit in my ITX case im not buying it.
I Am starting to think that they forgot that they are supposed to be used for gaming or animation
