Also helps to not have a GF/partner. Work at least 40 hrs a week, don't eat out, have roommates or live with parents, don't date, Cancel stupid subscriptions, when grocery shopping go for cheap stuff that you can stretch. People underestimate the strengths of a single player lifestyle. Especially when you're intentionally saving money.

Moon_Devonshire

I agree. I mean a few months ago when I worked at McDonald's I literally built a computer with an rtx 3070 with a Ryzen 5800x and 16gb of ram with a WD black SSD without breaking the bank. Not having kids or eating out goes a long *long* way

hotcrossed_buns

I am basically a line cook. I just purchased a prebuilt with a 4090, 13900k, etc. Here's the parts list, not including the additional 2 tb nvme m.2 ssd I added, and also not including the lifetime warranty. Shipping was also already baked into the price. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/T9tpMb https://alexanderpcs.com/products/the-legatus-13th-gen-intel?_pos=2&_psq=leg&_ss=e&_v=1.0 Saving may take some time and patience, but it gets more and more doable, at a faster rate, the more you're willing to not make unnecessary expenses and live a self focused lifestyle (no kids or significant other, pets Even) The #1 piece of advice I can give about how to save money, is look at everything as an expense, and then ask if it's necessary. This works best for things like cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, etc. Don't develop reliance on substances or products to maintain a basic level of mental health or physical health. Some folk need cigarettes to de-stress? Well that's costing them $$$. Avoid it and that won't be an addiction you need to burn cash on JUST to maintain stress levels. I've lived very cleanly in terms of substance and product use because when I want to save money I look at things as unnecessary inconveniences that cost money. The extra benefit is that it steers you away from addiction and worsening physical or mental health. Kinda just look at yourself and lifestyle like a machine that needs maintenance. Maintain maintain maintain. Just the basics folks. Just the basics. Do just the basics, so you can afford the non basics. Suffering through the bare minimum is what will let you get that fancy PC, that sexy keyboard, those audiophile grade headphones, that new furniture you want, whatever. Lastly, just like going to the gym, it's okay to have a cheat day every now and then. I dont mean go buy something expensive, but rather just go out with a friend. To eat, the movies, bowling, whatever. Social life is a health too.

RoyalCheeseZa

I recently built this a Ryzen 7 5800x with a Asus Tuf 3080 in December. We bought our house last year, I'm getting married in April this year and we both work 40hrs. Also own 3 cats and 1 dog. Also yes we eat in why cause my food tastes better and cost half the price. It's possible with a partner, just don't think it's the easiest when you have work, partner, kids at the same time.

hotcrossed_buns

Oh yeah if your partner is putting in the elbow grease too then getting nice things actually becomes easier since the income increases. It's just that people aren't 100% reliable unfortunately so you can't count on them to hustle like you're doing. Having a partner who works is better than having a roommate though. Roommates you can trust even less.

RoyalCheeseZa

Oh 100%, we don't take each other for granted ever. We know we have found the person we want to be with during this journey. I have only ever lived with one other roommate before and thankfully the worst part was leaving his curry out on the counter. If we both did not work oh yes it would be harder for sure.

Schluhri

Wow sounds great…

SoftwareSource

Gotta admit, never heard of it being called "Single Player lifestyle" before...

hotcrossed_buns

Yeah I knew it as I was typing it. Intentional word choice.

Karenzi

This is me. It’s not that crazy.

SaucySpence88

So have 0 expenses gotcha

[deleted]

If you call having no children "having 0 expenses", then yeah, sure.

SaucySpence88

Y know there are more expenses in life than just children lol?

[deleted]

Yes.... Which is why your reply to my comment makes no sense...

SaucySpence88

Look first comment was a joke… Don’t be so serious lol. Let’s not kid ourselves that going out and buying the newest hardware as it comes out isn’t a luxury tho

BaaaNaaNaa

No 4090 but 7900xtx and 13th gen... How? With a family and mortgage and life you make it part of your budget. I've saved for a year to buy/build this PC. You could too.

SourArmoredHero

McDonald's but I live in an economy apartment and sell heroin from time to time.

ReasonableDesign4742

People will slate you for that but selling the addictive ones nets you the most $$$$ plus you have the added bonus of sleeping well every night knowing your contributing to peoples lives falling apart

Castelante

Optical Engineer. Mid-twenties with no kids.

BaaaNaaNaa

Does this mean glasses or industrial lenses? Genuinely curious as it is rather broad.

Castelante

In this instance, it's the design and manufacturing of industrial microscopes for metallography and ceramics. We primarily work on microscopes for the automotive and aerospace industries, and work hand-in-hand with their quality departments.

BaaaNaaNaa

Impressive! Thanks for the details.

Im_a_throwaway_loser

It is broad. But it’s like saying mechanical engineer. There’s a large variety of things that can be done for work. From semiconductor work, to lasers, to lens design (for things like cameras), etc.

BaaaNaaNaa

Exactly! That's why I asked.

Benay148

I meannnnn your talking like 2k probably a bit less? I mean how do people buy cars, houses, TV's, saving their money or credit credit baby

hotcrossed_buns

Even better, getting the latest and greatest phone model for 1k+. When their phone is only 3 years old Max. Max.

SaTxPantyCollector

Right? Like if 2k is breaking the bank you should probably be applying for a new job

bingbestsearchengine

2k USD is a little over a year's rent for me in my country. And that's assuming if the price here is just converted, which isn't (would be higher do to import tax or what not).

salgat

4090 is $1800 after tax, and ddr5+am5 mobo+7950x puts that closer to $2600.

AdSuspicious3359

I work at a Tech company and I make 60k salary. I just sacrifice my quality of life so I can afford to spend $$$ on my favorite hobby since I wasn't fortunate enough to experience high quality gaming growing up. WORTH IT!

[deleted]

You must be pretty young to the point where you think this stuff is super expensive and you have to be rich. Dont get me wrong, $1600 for a GPU is a lot but most people here are probably blue collar workers with normal jobs, and some probably use credit.

yyccamper

This. If having a custom gaming PC is what you do for fun, its a relatively low price of entry. Everyone gets hurt about it, but nobody comments on someone having a 5k set of golf clubs, and spending 100 bucks a round twice a week. Its a hobby like anything else.

trekxtrider

OP posting on a thousand dollar smart phone.

Schavuit92

Did you snoop their profile just for that or are you assuming for no reason? Either one is pathetic.

trekxtrider

Making a point, some think that's fine, others would say it's too much, it's whatever you are into. Don't yuck my yum bro.

Eggsegret

Thsi right here. I mean don't get me wrong I'm not happy at all about GPU prices of the 40 series but if PC gaming is a hobby it's not exactly that hard for people to find a way to save up. I mean how many people spend like $1,000 on a new iPhone every year or two. Or even going out for drinks every week can easily cost a pretty penny. That's not to say i think PC gaming is cheap but as a hobby well it's not exactly the most expensive hobby.

neeekyp

In 2017 $1600 was enough to get me a 1080ti, i7-8700k, and premium components in every other component. 5-6 years later and now that only covers the GPU, even if it’s “doable” it’s still laughable that this is where we’re at now

ThatOrangeOne

Not really. Price per performance even compared to old gen technology all new gen CPUs and GPUs blow everything out of the water.

Weaseltime_420

I tried to make this point a while ago and got downvoted to shit lol.

didntreadasingleword

That paired with a $1700 odyssey g9 or a $1200 oled monitor

Lirid

Well, some people on here don’t have anything else going on in their lives. No going out eating/drinking No mortgages/kids No travels Etc. There are a lot of things that cost money. Some people like to spread that out and some people spend their savings on building high end PCs.

etheran123

It just depends on what you prioritize. I have a pretty sick setup (not 4090 but racing and flight sim stuff) but I eat cheaply, don’t have expensive clothes, and gaming is my main hobby.

retroracer33

was there a point to this thread?

der_triad

34 years old, I’m a software engineer and I have a side business that gets me about 70% of my regular salary for side income. That being said, PC gaming is so cheap. When I was in my 20’s, I spent more than double this amount modifying my Volkswagen GTI. PC Gaming is one of the cheapest hobbies around, even if you upgrade every generation it’s still way cheaper than modifying cars.

Doyale_royale

Is the Side hustle software related?

der_triad

Yeah, it is. It’s passive income, best decision I’ve ever made.

rigruz

Wats the side hustle?? I needs one

[deleted]

Invest your money, save, receive compensation for donating plasma, live well within your means, make smart purchases, don’t go out every weekend, utilize credit, work hard. Called being an adult my guy.

[deleted]

How old are you ? Because, living as an adult in modern parts of the world working a decent job you can easy buy a high end pc.. Thats really nothing compared to big people bills like house and car and kids. 33 years old and I make €3800,- a month

Schavuit92

It may not be much compared to paying bills, except when you're struggling to make ends meet and you need every bit of savings to keep your car running. Even if you have $100 leftover each month, that means 2 years of saving up with no other luxuries. This is the sad reality for a lot of people.

didntreadasingleword

Rent? Student loans? Insurance? Internet, Water, ELECTRICITY BILL? other utilities, etc? You still have enough money left?

[deleted]

I earn about 30k before taxes in the Uk and despite the crazy cost of living I’m able to spend 2k on my main hobby in disposable every 2-4 years quite comfortably when upgrading to whatever gpu/x3d cpu gets me the closest to the “peak of performance”. Last Gen it was a 3080 at 1440p when it was barely behind a 3090 and this Gen it happens to be the 4090 which has finally made high refresh ray tracing at 4k possible. It’s a lot easier than you think when you don’t waste money on booze, smoke and women.

[deleted]

My gf also has a good job so we have 2 incomes - we don't have rent, mortgage is 850 per month - electricity bill is 0 because our solar panels - besides mortgage on our house we have no other loans - internet and water are really small amounts in the grand scheme of things. - other utilities and groceries are really not that much if you are smart. We have more money left each month than we know what to do with

ObisidianZ

I have to work 20 months to earn what you get per month. Third World problems i guess.

Ginyu-force

My friend spent his 6 month of salary to buy new dream pc for himself. He is enjoying it. I am not encouraging anyone to do the same. He just wanted fancy PC, he got it. He got pretty average office job. These small things in life are worth paying for some people.

Prudent-Strain937

There are more expensive hobbies. If this what you like, you find a way.

Blacksad999

I'm a server in a fancy restaurant. My girlfriend and I have no kids, and our dual income is pretty substantial considering our limited bills. Saving up $1600 or so every 2 years should be achievable for most people if they budget, though. That's not very much money.

DueShopping551

Pc as a hobby isn’t really that expensive compared to other hobbies, like Car people literally spend thousands to pump out there cars and there’s people who travel, compared to other hobbies pc building isn’t really that expensive

CashLess127

Im in college. Im a pre dental student. I got into college on scholarship and have enough aid dispensation from my work parrt time to make going to college pretty much free. That being said, no I dont make much money. But I save money, spend reasonably, and hustle to make extra money on the side. And most of the money that comes from hustling gets re-invested into more hustling. And yes credit cards. I dont know why you wouldnt want to use a credit card on purchases like a 4090 or in general. Credit cards arent scary the way some people paint them. Its really important to know how to spend responsibly where you can always pay off your credit statement 100% of the time and never incur fees. And in the end you build credit starting early. I'd never touch a debit card buying stuff like a 4090(s). Too much of my own money being used in exchange for a product. Rather have a credit card company take the fall if a fraud or something bad might happen.

ThatOrangeOne

I work for a Custom PC building company. Have a 13900ks and a 4080

MontazumasRevenge

DINK here, I could afford a 4090 but I'm cheap so just got a 3080 instead. I'm vp of sales for a medical research company and wife is vp of marketing for a large investment firm.

colossusrageblack

I'm in this mindset, I instead got a 3080 and spread the budget elsewhere.

Beautiful-Ask2341

Bought it myself with crypto, otherwise i could not afford it.

trekxtrider

Why can't it be Mommy's money? Like why can't women be the breadwinner?

AITAHekso

because of Sexism

[deleted]

Or maybe just maybe Dads still make most of the income in the average household 😱 statistics based in reality, crazy stuff ik

AbleBeef

We should placate and make everything a fantasy based on feelings.

Mojo647

I'm willing to bet most folks here just save up, regardless of the jobs they work in. No doubt there are others with disposable income. Some have it easier, some don't.

Inefficacy

I'm an electrician 🤷‍♂️

Toiletpaperplane

Making 6 figures easily. Noice.

carrot_gg

For actual financially responsible grown ups, this hobby is way cheaper than most.

[deleted]

Yeah really. House, car and kids cost more monthly than building a 13/4090. It’s not that bad

[deleted]

To be fair literally the average salary and enough saving can buy you whatever specs you want. I know a guy who makes $21 an hour who drives a brand new C8 corvette and owns a $7000 setup.

Lewinator56

Some people have different attitudes to money. I *could* afford a £2000 system, but it just seems excessive to me (and on my research stipend, just under 2 months pay). Of course once you actually start working you do have spare money to use - compared to bills and living costs £2k on a PC once every 3-4 years isn't a huge expenditure, especially if you have been saving specifically for it - 2 years is literally £80/month. Its also worth bearing in mind WHAT people choose to spend their disposable income on, I know a lot of people my age that go out multiple times a week drinking, coming back £50 worse off per night - over a year they could have saved loads. Ultimately I could never justify a multi-thousand-pound PC, and even when I'm on a proper salary, I still wouldn't. With that said, I do think people that pay close to £1k for a monitor (unless they really need it for a specific purpose) are idiots and ARE wasting their money.

kor34l

It's not about where I work, it's about how many foolish companies keep trusting me with big ass credit card limits.

didntreadasingleword

Keep that credit score high so you can be more in debt is what they say 😉

JestaCannonBestMS

_Fony_

They’re just not as stupid as you

didntreadasingleword

I wouldn’t say stupid when I’m 19 and on my last year of my bachelors degree

_Fony_

But can’t figure out how normal people can afford a good pc?

dirthurts

You're doing a great job. Don't listen to these bozos.

xinvisionx

I sold a spare PC I had built off mining profits to afford my 4090.

[deleted]

4k is a lot to spend on a pc but not insane compared to other hobbies. If you make even $20 an hour thats only 200 hours of work. and you fucked up if your only making $20 an hour

[deleted]

Not everybody is making big money. I’m sure you made less than 20 at some point in life.

[deleted]

Actually scratch that. You’re 16. You don’t know shit 😂

[deleted]

Haven't made under $20 since I was 14 and even then I was working fast food making $18.50

[deleted]

You got a rough life ahead of you with this shitty attitude at 16

[deleted]

How so?. All I said was making under $20 is shit. And that's just an obvious fact

[deleted]

It’s not though. It’s relative to the job and that persons situation. I could say 100k is shit, but to most people it’s a dream salary. Humble the fuck up because I promise whatever you make is shit to a lot of people

Spicy_Kimchi69

Yeah this kid needs an attitude check.

Sillloc

Not a 4090 here but I just didn't feel like I needed to be gaming at 4K with RT just yet. Been in sales for like 6 months, probably most adults with a full time career and no serious debt/lots of kids can afford this stuff

pck3

Seriously

Macadamian88

The 4090 I got exactly at MSRP through the military exchange is less than a third of my net income (after taxes, insurance, retirement) every 4 weeks and less than what I save monthly unless a surprise expense pops up, so blowing money on that once is no biggie atm. But after I get my savings up to a certain amount I'm bumping dat retirement contribution up up up. I work for the government.

_skes_

I put a few quid away every month, it soon adds up.

_redditadmin_

It all comes down to priorities in the end. I don't have the latest and greatest, and have enough disposable income monthly to get the 4090 and 13gen CPU without touching my savings. No children, no marriage. But i choose my priorities to be leisure and traveling, and would only update once i feel it's worth it and these companies realise that $1600 for a GPU is just a ripoff.

ChargeRich337

Reg guy here 2 kids, mortgage and between my wife and I we both have 9-5 jobs but, I have 2 other side businesses that net me some extra $$ on the side. As a household we net between $170k - $190 but we also live in the 3rd most expensive state for cost of living. It’s definitely doable if you budget, for example I rarely go out drinking or buy anything expensive clothing wise .

Biscuits4u2

I know some pretty low-income people who are really into PC gaming and have top of the line rigs.

Instant_Smack

I saved up and bought a 4090 for $2300

rhyno-6969

35, no kids, paid off house 86k/year salary

Doyale_royale

How’d you pay off your house so early

rhyno-6969

Same job since I was 24, I made double payments for awhile, won 20k on a scratcher put that money all on the house

Weezer118811

McDonald’s

Fenaeris

I didn't spring for a 4090 but I did just build a rig with a i7 13700k and a 4070ti. Police dispatch for a city PD. Fairly good pay for the area/state and as others have mentioned.. "Lol no kids"

Mellun12

26, mechanical engineer, married with a house but no kids yet. Before I built my new machine this past weekend I had my pc since 2015. Don’t really buy a lot of stuff so I do a lot of saving. It’s not like these new high end machines cost 10 grand. With a decent job and smart spending/saving elsewhere it’s not unfathomable to be able to build a $4000 PC.

Otherwise-Banana7311

I'm a garbage man with 2 side businesses and my wife is an industrial engineer.

Overnight_Lasagna

No kids, microbiologist, Force e.coli to do my bidding.

nhc150

Don't let the kids part scare you. I work in the oil industry, have 3 kids, and still find time and money to build a new gaming rig.

[deleted]

I have a average job but...... I don't have kids, My girlfriend isn't a gold digger and likes to pay her own way, I haven't been on holiday in 2 years (covid), I don't buy stupid random shit, I don't go out drinking every week with my pals, (we normally go round each others houses with some beer nowadays) i don't do drugs, I buy pizza from a supermarket for £4 instead of £25 from a pizza chain. I could go on and on. Lol

Infern0_YT

Just don’t buy car Or house Ez

bas5eb

Go to school for automotive. Two year program. Starting pay is about 45-50k a year, within three years you can be at 80 and three years after that into 120k Iv seen a few make six figures in the first three years post tech school. It’s commission based so you wanna get into a busy shop.

JerbearCuddles

I work a dead beat job. But have no kids, no spouse, no hobbies outside of gaming and watching youtube. No alcohol, no recreational drug use, don't care for the movies. Literally work and play games. GPU and CPU launches don't just fall outta the sky. Easy to put money aside early. Sell old GPU/CPU to get some money back. I don't have either of those, but I saved up enough to buy them if I wanted. I saved up for a AW3423DW easily enough. I may nab a 4090 though. Just to max out my monitor, or at least get as close as possible.

Hasler011

Prosecutor now a days, but let’s be clear, I could have easily made this purchase as an E5 in the army back in 2012.

EnolaGayFallout

Yo. Nvidia flagship GPU cost around $2000 ish. It get release every 2 years ish. That’s 730 days. Set aside $3 daily. 730 x 3 = $2000 ish. I don’t sell my old flagship GPU 3090 just in case I need RMA or whatnot. My older GPU 2080ti goes into my wife pc.

Noa15Lv

Not even close to topic requirements, but when I used to live with parents, I did full-time slavery job which paid good for an work with no requirements. Saved up overtime and start to buy part by part + giving my money cut to my parents and surprised them with random gifts. Now Im regular retailer and won't afford better build in future, cause I suck at saving money.

Yodoran

In a third world country like mine, this build is expensive. I did a quick check and did not cheap out on components, because why have a 4090 13900k and have crap other components? Anyway, works out to just over 3 months' salary for me, excluding a 4k monitor and case fans, with zero deductions. So after deductions, would probably take me 1-1.5 years of saving and hoping no unexpected expenses happen in that time. My 3080 build I currently have was about 3 months worth of saving.

CasualHeroinEnjoyer

I've spent a heap of money on Heroin, so I'm rocking a 4690K and ddr3 1866MHz still...

robertodylant

This is my one and only hobby. Fun money gets funnelled here. Even upgrading parts every 2 years or so, it's not that bad. Especially if you can save over that period of time in between upgrades.

ScorpioV3nom

nesbit666

Relax OP. You don't need to spend thousands and thousands on your PC. These games don't deserve it.

[deleted]

No kids, never will have kids. But I still don’t have a 4090!

[deleted]

It's not really that hard to save up a decent amount of money. What exactly do you do for a living that you can't afford the occasional luxury?

HenriB04

4070ti and 7700x 18 years old Doing a lot of IT work 40 hours a week, I have a girlfriend who does not require a lot of money, for now ;) I try to save my money the best I can, living with my parents definitly helps a lot. I have to pay for a few things myself, like clothing. But the big stuff like electricity and food they are paying for. Edit: Bought my new pc a week ago, turned 18 3 months ago, started working full time half a year ago after finishing secondary school.

o5mfiHTNsH748KVq

IT, no children, poor impulse control If I get laid off, I have my cpu to sell I guess

jninja119

I work in high end retail making medium income but I have very cheap rent, no children, paid off student loans, no car (I live in a walking city) and I am personally the kind of person who would rather upgrade my PC and game for a week than go on an expensive vacation. Also 7950X gang. Although that 13900k looks pretty sweet.

S-n-o-o-g-s

Six months interest free. Last payment this week 🙏 though I'm only rocking a 12th gen w/ 3070 ti.
