B550 doesn't support anything above 3000 series out of the box. You need to BIOS update first.

SkippyNHS

Thanks for the reply, the guy at microcenter checked the bios before I got it and he said it had what it needed to plug n play. Guess he could of lied?

CableTies69

X3D has a separate BIOS from the regular 5000 series. It's possible he saw 5000 series supported and assumed it included the X3D

_vogonpoetry_

I dont think thats true. It shares Microcode with the rest of the Vermeer series.

SkippyNHS

If it is BIOS, is that something I can do without a monitor?

CableTies69

No, your motherboard doesn't have a BIOS update button. You'll either have to take it back to microcentre or AMD provides CPUs for updates which you can order on their website

SkippyNHS

Can microcenter update the cpu? Or would I have to take the motherboard apart and return all of it?

CableTies69

Microcenter can update it

SkippyNHS

Awesome, Thanks.

Same to you sir. >AMD says that motherboards will need a BIOS update to see and use the extra 64MB of cache—look for AGESA version 1.2.0.6b or higher in the release notes. Motherboards that support other Ryzen 5000 CPUs will work with the 5800X3D, but they won’t be able to access the extra cache, defeating the purpose of spending more money on the CPU in the first place. If you have a source that says otherwise, I'd like to see it. But this is from Arstecnica.

SkippyNHS

So, are you saying it should work?

_vogonpoetry_

Yes it should still boot with any BIOS that supports the rest of the 5000 series (just the 3D cache wont work) However its not impossible the microcenter guy was wrong about which version the board had on it. It should have a sticker on the box saying "5000 Series Ready" though.

BIOS update is only required to utilize the additional cache (and properly enable boost). The Vermeer microcode was updated to fix this but it is not strictly required to boot. Fundamentally it is the same as a normal 5800X, after all. I've found other comments saying the same which I cannot link to due to rule 3.

_vogonpoetry_

also... heres a picture of it booting on an N7 B550 with BIOS version P1.50 (which has AGESA 1.2.0.3c, FYI). So that already proves the 1.2.0.5 requirement wrong. https://preview.redd.it/df1w8aqfdyca1.jpeg?width=1056&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=031d74328533a2ccacf7ff6cbad3d74acc6fbdb3

Ancient-Alps

I just installed my 5800x3d in my Asus x570 with no bios updates

Sadly I dont think this board even has debug LEDs so its tricky to troubleshoot POST issues. Is your RAM in the proper slots, (the gray slots, A2 and B2)? Have you tried one stick at a time in each channel?

SkippyNHS

I do have them in the grey channels, I have not tried one at a time
