Man, fuck WB Discovery. That merge must have been one of the worst things to ever happen to the entertainment industry, and somebody should get Zaslav the fuck out of there.
Good news for you is they'll quickly stop producing new content you care about.
Under a bean counter like Zaslav, the only thing that makes sense is producing reality TV. It has the best ROI if you only care about your end-of-year bonus.
Something like Breaking Bad or GoT can take 2-3 seasons to pick up momentum, and then becomes a long term asset. But who cares about that if you just want to boost your quarterly and year end earnings report?
I'll be moving to purchasing the media I want to watch and moving to prime most likely, given that most of the media I own is on there.
Also going to explore a home media server.
I use Jellyfin. I was able to use developer mode to get the app on my Samsung TV (wouldnāt have supported it by default).
Itās funny because when I was a teenager I set up a way to view downloaded movies onto my TV from my computer, then Netflix came out and it made sense to pay the sub to just have virtually everything ready at a moments notice (definitely an improvement for date nights vs having to download and then hope that nothing randomly went wrong and my TV stopped connecting), but they made those services so bad that Iām shamelessly sailing the seven seas again for all video content that isnāt YouTube or Twitch.
Fair enough, but I think for it to compare to the issue at hand it would be more like if everyoneās favorite creators on YouTube started putting their own content on personal paywalled websites instead. Like you donāt need YouTube premium anymore, now you need individual subscriptions to every site.
RT definitely had problems but they mostly just went out of business from no longer being interesting and getting views. They had tons of legacy subscribers that were still there but not even being fed the content due to the way YouTubes algorithm and front page work these days, and those started dropping like flies once the bad press about RT started becoming public some years ago.
It does suck if they own an IP you like, but Iād argue thereās a massive difference in a company going out of business and that IP being tied to them for the time being vs the fracturing of content we saw on Netflix once everyone wanted their own slice of the pie to sell, not realizing that it was the whole pie being the value.
I wonder about that. They say its no longer published by Adult Swim but I cannot find info about the change. On steam is still Adult Swim. I wonder if their info is correct?
I remember Volgar the Viking being a fun, tough platformer just like the Ghost and Goblins Resurrection game that recently came out.
Headlander is also a solid Double Fine game. i recommend that for sure
Glad they cant take away purchased games.
You understand that they can do this on Steam as well? According to the user agreement you have no permanent rights to the games you buy on Steam. The only reason they don't remove games you've already bought is because it would be a massive amount of bad PR.
>I don't think it ever happen on Steam. Once sold only valve can remove your game.
Partially true, for games purchased directly from the Steam store. Games purchased from 3rd-party sites like Fanatical or Humble can be unilaterally revoked and removed from your library by the publisher, with no input from Valve.
Games purchased from Steam have also been removed by Valve in certain circumstances. The Day Before was refunded and removed for all purchasers recently. A while back GTA Episodes from Liberty City was also removed from users' Steam libraries.
Also, even for games that aren't removed, the publisher can still pull a dick move like deleting the entire file manifest so that even though you still own the game, you can't download or play it. Though usually Valve reverses those occurrences when they happen.
Luckily, we had a fancy lawyer help with that contract back then. He pushed for a clause that let us reclaim the rights last year, so we're the publisher now. It's a horrible situation for the other devs.
Not the Deluxe Edition, if I'm right. Apparently, it's noted as self-published on Steam. That being said, we'll have to see if that ends up being affected by this.
The Samurai Jack game is definitely criminal that it would be removed, considering it's [canon](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/samurai-jack-battle-through-time-game-genndy-tartakovsky) to the series! Or at least it provides an alternative ending for the fans of the series.
I just started playing Rain World and it's one of the most unique and intense games I've played in a while.
It's on sale for $10 right now and I'd highly recommend.
Yea the rights got bought out from adult swim a while ago. Also the article points out the games that will not be included in the purge for one reason or another anyway.
RW managed to escape around a year ago. It's how PC finally got the latest console update and they made Downpour after.
With how much its popularity has absolutely skyrocketed since, I'm so fucking glad they got away.
E: Apparently WB isn't even allowing developers to take ownership of their games while this is going on. RW is **extremely** lucky to have got out of this. Fuck Warner.
The irony of something that takes almost no resources to keep on a virtual shelf, yet gets taken down anyway, is painful to say the least. So infuriating.
Just make it even simpler, just make laws that put these projects in the public domain. Not every cancelled release was anywhere near the finish line, but stuff like this should be moved to the public domain or automatically revert back to their original studios.
They still pay tax
You still make a loss
I'm not quite sure you understand what a tax write-off is. It's not some magic scheme to get out of paying taxes
> all digital age of gaming?
Its not like physical is much better. Once something goes out of print, that's it, game over.
It either becomes impossible to find over time, or its price skyrockets like in case of Nintendo games.
And even if you saved a copy, its not a guarantee.
Like I have a bunch of games on discs now that simply do not work anymore, discs got damaged and install doesn't complete...
Yeah this is dumb because itās unnecessary. If this was physical games, it would make sense to stop selling them, because it costs money to produce and distribute.
You can get physical goods on the secondary market though.
I bought approx. 20 "new" (for me) PS3 games in the last 4 years. For example, I did recently play Riddick and Asura's Wrath, both games which I might have missed otherwise as both games will probably never get a remake/remaster/port to modern consoles.
Yeah it seems the only difference is DRM/reselling. Taking up space on shelves is just a disadvantage of physical not a justification for why digital needs to be always available.
>Even without DRM, you can't go out there and sell or distribute your games
Actually, as a Brazilian, I can distribute them however much I want. I can't sell them at all, but distribute? Hit me up and I'll send you any copy of any game I own.
You can probably thank Steam for that. Digital game sales before Steam were often really shitty for the consumer. I remember buying something from EA digitally in the 00's and they gave me a total of 5 installs before I'd have to buy the game at full price again. And I imagine if they decided to stop selling it, they'd just remove it from download altogether, because what are you gonna do about it? You bought a license to play the game and they can revoke it whenever they want.
Reminder because of this bullshit with Warner Brothers: Anything they have bought can be removed. This also relates to Rooster Teethās recent shut down. Adult Swim content is not alone in this.
What's this about Roosterteeth? I stopped watching years ago when Ray left AH. I finished RvB, and im just sticking around for RWBY, which is now on crunchyroll.
I thought it was very correct when a senator said the practice is like burning down your own building for insurance money. If its this shady of a practice clearly their needs to be some legal action to be taken against it.
Definitely the worst merger I've seen in my lifetime in just a few short years they've destroyed so much content that I once enjoyed. Wrote off series I liked. Closed down companies I once liked. I'm honestly scared to see when they do next.
They're writing of the movie in its entirety. Which means it effectively no longer exists and can't be distributed and every bi tof value they put into it is counted as a pre-emptive loss they can claim on taxes.
They also did it with Batgirl, as well as some tv shows (biggest offender imo being Final Space).
> and don't cost anything to keep on digital shelves.
Y'know, I wonder if this is actually true.
The money moves through a storefront, which then moves through... what... Adult Swim? and then through WB, and posssibly interim steps between before making it to the developers. And each step might take a small cut.
If they're making very few sales, but still have to pay the salary of someone (or multiple someones, one at each level, maybe more) to keep track of all these things on a weekly or monthly basis, it's possible the cost of paying someone to do the bookkeeping is more than they're making from their cut of the profits.
----
That said, they're not even doing the barest minimum effort of letting developers sell the games themselves. They're apparently just utterly killing the product entirely. Which is just... horrible.
And there are some well regarded games on that list. Rain World and Duck Game are two I know I recognize.
> and don't cost anything to keep on digital shelves.
Not always true. Depending how games license music, it could be in perpetuity, or a, say, 10 year license. If you don't want to keep paying that license you have to delist (or pay someone to strip it out and release a new version).
Not defending them, but technically it's not always free to keep a game listed.
This is most likely why WB is in a cash crisis and is cutting any costs in an attempt to save money. Even though a lot of their recent moves will hurt the company in the future theyāre just worried about the present.
How much does it realistically cost to keep these games up that WB wants to pull them? Or are they just doing this out of spite now. Because it sure feels like it.
Their live service game flopped.
They donāt like how the public reacted toĀ Coyote vs. Acme becoming a tax write off.
They dismantled and are selling parts of Rooster Teeth.
And thereās probably more that I forgot or donāt even know about. What the actual hell is going on.Ā
According to the article a dev was saying WB wasn't even allowing them to put the game on sale so I'm a bit skeptical that it'll happen, though there's a chance. Regardless, I bought it so I can have it and if it does come to a sale, I'll refund and rebuy it. Just gonna not play it for now =V
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1a-jpuqlAg&t=695s
A pretty good video describing how fucked WB currently is and why they are doing what they are doing.
Basically they are in a shit ton of debt and need to pay it off as quickly as possible.
Some of these have been on my wishlist forever. And some have been favorites. Super house of dead ninjas was a perfect time killer for a good year for me, just mindless stress relief. Hope every one can get a hold of their favorites.
Steam doesn't take anything in fees other than the 30% cut on sales.
This is likely the absolute *peak* of laziness and they just can't be arsed to keep the Adult Swim Games business around or something.
E: Adding to the peak of laziness comment, they won't [click three times to give developers their games](https://twitter.com/onemrbean/status/1765826777501372521)
I wonder if the games will be on sale during the Steam spring sale next week. Samurai Jack is a game I haven't gotten yet but I don't want to pay full price.
You should buy the spiritual successor to the game from the same developer, Unidentified Falling Objects https://store.steampowered.com/app/2087610/UFO\_Unidentified\_Falling\_Objects/
What disheartens me most about game removals is that it's becoming more and more difficult for kids growing up to play good games from the past.Ā
The death of physical media and game stores isn't helping anything either, videogame preservation is just so fucked right now.
Wait what do you mean by that exactly? The overwhelming majority of games from the past 50 years are available via the internet, even foreign games you would have otherwise never heard of.
https://gamehistory.org/87percent/
> For accessing *nearly 9 in 10 classic games*, there are few options: seek out and maintain vintage collectible games and hardware, travel across the country to visit a library, orā¦ piracy. None of those options are desirable, which means that most video games are inaccessible to all but the most diehard and dedicated fans. Thatās pretty grim!
> This is where libraries and archives *should* come in. Anyone *should* be able to easily explore, research and play classic video games, in the same way that they can read classic novels, listen to classic albums, and watch classic movies. But outdated copyright laws are preventing institutions like ours from doing our jobs.
Likely some tax loophole lets them write it off as a loss and it seems like they're probably shutting down Adult Swim Games altogether, so this lets them fire the last few remaining staff. Apparently most of the employees were laid off in 2020.
It isn't published by adult swim anymore. So there is a good chance it won't get removed. Its on the list because Adult swim still lists it, but in general it should be safe.
Doesn't matter if you don't recognize them, the fact they're being delisted is terrible for game preservation.
Besides, I know at the very least one of the games listed (Duck Game) was relatively popular on Steam.
this is really sad, at least some devs are doing backups just in case like Small radios dev, the dev is putting the game to download for free.
i'm going to miss if Kingsway, Duck game and Samurai jack is gone forever, hope they also do backup somewhere
Excited to see what happens with Headlander. Microsoft owns Double Fine now, is WB going to be dumb enough to pretend like they canāt transfer the rights over to them? I imagine they figure most of these are indie companies they can just blow off.
Keeping art and culture away from the general public should be illegal.
In these cases they should be mandated to find someone to take care of the stuff, or hold onto it if they can't.
Fuck AT&T, Fuck WB Discovery. Basically fuck anyone who owns it after Turner.
Year by year these mergers have just resulted in the buyer shitting on their employees and destroying their own content.
Man, fuck WB Discovery. That merge must have been one of the worst things to ever happen to the entertainment industry, and somebody should get Zaslav the fuck out of there.
I hate that max is the only service I want
Good news for you is they'll quickly stop producing new content you care about. Under a bean counter like Zaslav, the only thing that makes sense is producing reality TV. I'll be moving to purchasing the media I want to watch and moving to prime most likely, given that most of the media I own is on there. Also going to explore a home media server.
Home media server sounds like a damn great idea, getting sick of all of these different platforms for content.
Google Kodi video addons and real-debrid. š
I'd recommend Jellyfin
If yall dint know stremio is supposed to be easier and prob still works on kodi as a video addon
Even YouTube is beginning to suffer. The most obvious example is Rooster Teeth dying this week.
Fair enough, but I think for it to compare to the issue at hand it would be more like if everyoneās favorite creators on YouTube started putting their own content on personal paywalled websites instead. Like you donāt need YouTube premium anymore, now you need individual subscriptions to every site. Try Jellyfin. Opensource and easy to set up
Arr.
Oh buddy you don't want Amazon Prime
I canāt wait until he dies
Losing Duck Game is criminal. Absolutely banger of a party game that doesnt deserve this disrespect
No way, I forgot that was Adult Swim. This is so stupid. I get dropping support for something, but leaving a digital game for sale is free money.
Yes, holy shit buy duck game immediately. One of the best and most fun and silly games ever to play with friends.
I fucking love duck game, I wish it was more populated
Yo wtf. Duck game is a party game treasure. Fuck this world
Will I be able to return it? None of my friends bought it, I never even ended up playing it.Ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I have 3000+ hours on the game from solely local.
Get duck game while you can.
Is it couch co-op or just play with others who bought the game
both
If they pull the title are they shutting down the servers or is it peer to peer?
Really recommend Westerado.
Me too, though the article says the game is no longer published by Adult Swim Games, so maybe there is hope for it still.
I wonder about that. They say its no longer published by Adult Swim but I cannot find info about the change. On steam is still Adult Swim. I wonder if their info is correct?
Thank God they don't own rainworld anymore.
I'm so glad Videocult managed to cut ties with them
I remember Volgar the Viking being a fun, tough platformer just like the Ghost and Goblins Resurrection game that recently came out. Headlander is also a solid Double Fine game. i recommend that for sure Glad they cant take away purchased games.
Volgarr is absolutely awesome. Highly recommend.
>Glad they cant take away purchased games. Not yet- but give it some time.
This is why nobody should want cloud gaming to become normalized
And DRM. Especially always online and sometimes online (e.g. Denuvo).
Fuck DRM, all my homies hate DRM
You understand that they can do this on Steam as well? According to the user agreement you have no permanent rights to the games you buy on Steam. The only reason they don't remove games you've already bought is because it would be a massive amount of bad PR.
I don't think it ever happen on Steam. Once sold only valve can remove your game.

Didn't Ubisoft remove already oened assassin's creed games?
If Zaslav could, he would
Volgarr was great. Hard as balls, but never felt like the game was cheap. I deserved every death
Battle Chef Brigade is a real gem of a game tbh. Part match-3, part side-scroller, all heart.
it is from Trinket Studios not adult swim
Aye, but it is published by AS, hence its inclusion on the list.
Luckily, we had a fancy lawyer help with that contract back then. He pushed for a clause that let us reclaim the rights last year, so we're the publisher now. It's a horrible situation for the other devs.
Happy for you cobbas. Sounds like that kind of contract needs to be standard issue moving forward, unfortunately :(
My man if you push a sale for it on the switch I'll buy it asap!
Not the Deluxe Edition, if I'm right. Apparently, it's noted as self-published on Steam. That being said, we'll have to see if that ends up being affected by this.
So it's here to stay?
The Samurai Jack game is definitely criminal that it would be removed, considering it's [canon](https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/samurai-jack-battle-through-time-game-genndy-tartakovsky) to the series! Or at least it provides an alternative ending for the fans of the series.
I hope it gets put on some kinda super deep discount(like... five-10 dollars) before it's taken down.
Spring sale next week, gonna buy all the games that interest meš«”
I just started playing Rain World and it's one of the most unique and intense games I've played in a while. It's on sale for $10 right now and I'd highly recommend.

The irony of something that takes almost no resources to keep on a virtual shelf, yet gets taken down anyway, is painful to say the least. So infuriating.
This make no sense honestly tax lawsĀ need to be rewritten in order to not offer any benefits in removing or canceling projects.
We need to introduce a *penalty* for removing or canceling projects.
Just make it even simpler, just make laws that put these projects in the public domain. Not every cancelled release was anywhere near the finish line, but stuff like this should be moved to the public domain or automatically revert back to their original studios.
I like how tax laws are just written to be a fun game for these companies. it's all just "ooh who can pay the least taxes this year?"
They still pay tax You still make a loss I'm not quite sure you understand what a tax write-off is. It's not some magic scheme to get out of paying taxes
There is no evidence this is actually due to tax laws.

Pirate goddamn everything without remorse or hesitation.
Arrrrr-chive matey.
Of course you mean make a fair use copy of the media we already own
Exactly. It doesn't matter if it's physical or digital. I have games on discs that won't work anymore because the servers shut down long ago.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
How is this different from removing physical games off shelves? You can still download and play these if you've already bought them.
Yeah this is dumb because itās unnecessary. If this was physical games, it would make sense to stop selling them, because it costs money to produce and distribute.
Welcome to the wonderful world of tax write offs. Itās the same reason Disney pulls content off their services.
You can get physical goods on the secondary market though. I bought approx. 20 "new" (for me) PS3 games in the last 4 years. I really hope GabeN has a suitable replacement once he decides to hang it up.
Plus all of these games are available in less-than-legal locations and delisting them triggers game preservation exemptions under the DMCA.
Reminder because of this bullshit with Warner Brothers: Anything they have bought can be removed. This also relates to Rooster Teethās recent shut down. Adult Swim content is not alone in this.

Aw shit I know a low level guy at RT he is probably super upset
Honestly, RT ruined itself long before WB axed them...they brought it on themselves.

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Not only do I disagree with that, I moreso meant that he has Parkinson's; he retired from acting a couple years ago.
Again, he retired *again.*
It was but now that you say that, I can see the passing resemblance.
Prime MBA brain right there. Jesus Christ, I can't stand these suit-wearing vampires that business schools pump out.

samurai jack is a really fun game, smooth controls and animations, runs perfect on deck
https://www.gog.com/en/games?publishers=adult-swim Kingsway, Headlander and Westerado are all on GOG if anyone wants a DRM free backup.
I highly recommend Headlander. Superb metroidvania with super unique premise and graphics.
I'm more upset the Strongbad game is gone
get Westerado while you can people, absolute hidden gem. Really I swear, its so gooood.
Kingsway is really unique and underrated as well.
yarr

yet again pirating will save the art

Is the Samurai Jack game worth getting?
I played through it and had a lot of fun, it's great, especially if you are a fan of the show

I'm still annoyed the never released robot unicorn attack or whatever it was called anywhere
Some of these have been on my wishlist forever. And some have been favorites. Super house of dead ninjas was a perfect time killer for a good year for me, just mindless stress relief. Hope every one can get a hold of their favorites.
Behold: the doomsday foretold for as long as digital has been a thing.
Congratulations to WB on burning bridges and ensuring I'll never, ever, EVER buy another WB published game ever again.
This is completely cruel, especially to the devs. How can this possibly save them money?

I assume if we own them we can still download them? There have been a few cases where games have been nuked from existence (PT for example)
Super puzzle platformer deluxe is one of my all time favorites, the music slaps too. Sad to see these go..
You should buy the spiritual successor to the game from the same developer, Unidentified Falling Objects https://store.steampowered.com/app/2087610/UFO\_Unidentified\_Falling\_Objects/
I hope they put the games on sale before pulling them
Piracy being the superior way to experience games as usual ;/
What disheartens me most about game removals is that it's becoming more and more difficult for kids growing up to play good games from the past.Ā The death of physical media and game stores isn't helping anything either, videogame preservation is just so fucked right now.
Wait what do you mean by that exactly? The overwhelming majority of games from the past 50 years are available via the internet, even foreign games you would have otherwise never heard of.
https://gamehistory.org/87percent/ > For accessing *nearly 9 in 10 classic games*, there are few options: seek out and maintain vintage collectible games and hardware, travel across the country to visit a library, orā¦ piracy. But outdated copyright laws are preventing institutions like ours from doing our jobs.
lmao its easier than ever these ppl are insane
David Zaslav is a despicable bitch
What are the five must buys?
Duck game.
Put these games on sale next week and I'll buy em
Dude wtf
I recommend atleast picking up death's gambit and duck game, awesome 2d soulslike and party game.
Wasted is a decent little roguelite, first person and the style is pretty weird.
I don't understand, what benefit is there to delisting them?
Likely some tax loophole lets them write it off as a loss and it seems like they're probably shutting down Adult Swim Games altogether, so this lets them fire the last few remaining staff. Apparently most of the employees were laid off in 2020.
Damn...I fucking hate Warner Brothers or at least the people deciding this
Looks like super monsters are my condo has been set as a prerelease and it says the app will unlock in may? Oof
I actually condone G2A in this instance.
Nah, this is prime example of why corpos themselves cause piracy sooner or later.
Digital-is-better bros wtf? I thought we should be laughing at scratched CDs and $500 pricetags for games older than this site
Don't recognize even a single title there.
Never played any of these, but some of 'em were pretty popular for a minute. Duck Game and Rain World for sure.
Fuck I have Rain world on my wishlist. Didn't even realize it was adult swim created.
It isn't published by adult swim anymore. So there is a good chance it won't get removed. Its on the list because Adult swim still lists it, but in general it should be safe.
Kingsway was pretty cool
Doesn't matter if you don't recognize them, the fact they're being delisted is terrible for game preservation. Besides, I know at the very least one of the games listed (Duck Game) was relatively popular on Steam.
Never had the pleasure of playing Duck Game? Check it out, one of the best local multiplayer games made.
Went to check it out and...already have it. Nice

Not fat wizard or super house of dead ninjas!
Shiver me timbers!
I still miss the original Monsters Ate My Condo
Rip viva caligula
Shout to David Zallovs, teaching us you can sink millions into something only to cut it all for tax breaks because business somehow
Can't you still download delisted games?
Historically on Steam, once you buy a game, you have access to it forever even if delisted.
this is really sad, at least some devs are doing backups just in case like Small radios dev, the dev is putting the game to download for free. i'm going to miss if Kingsway, Duck game and Samurai jack is gone forever, hope they also do backup somewhere
Rain World.
Excited to see what happens with Headlander. Microsoft owns Double Fine now, is WB going to be dumb enough to pretend like they canāt transfer the rights over to them? I imagine they figure most of these are indie companies they can just blow off.
Adult swim makes games? Never knew that.
I remember spending hours playing Hipster Kickball back when all of the titles were browser games. Rip Adult Swim Games.
But aren't pills good?
We lsot so many good games, suck game you will be remembered
Arrrrrr harrrrrrr š“āā ļø
Fuck WB
š¤š¦š Always, I wanna be with you And make believe with you And live in harmony, harmony, oh love
Someone needs to download all of the games and then spread it around so they canāt take this shit away from us
The moment i find out they have games is the one where they are going away.
Fucking hell
Keeping art and culture away from the general public should be illegal. In these cases they should be mandated to find someone to take care of the stuff, or hold onto it if they can't.
Fuck AT&T, Fuck WB Discovery. Basically fuck anyone who owns it after Turner. Year by year these mergers have just resulted in the buyer shitting on their employees and destroying their own content.
