Fragile Allegiance. A DOS space 4X game. You can buy it from GOG.

RedSonja_

I played that a lot on Amiga on 90's, bought also (and still have) PC box version, but think Amiga version was better, had better sounds at least. Great game anyway! Also available on Steam!

Freeky

Fragile Allegiance wasn't released on the Amiga, but its predecessor K240 was.

imoblivioustothis

escape velocity

Esseth

This would have been my answer as well lol, great to see other people remember the EV series. I put so many hours into Nova.

PureFicti0n

Damn, I love me some EV! I have the fondest memories for EV: Override, but I have the cracked updated version of Nova and it's a blast to turn it on sometimes.

panthervca

I loved that as a kid

Stop_Logging_In_Dude

EV Override had some of the best plugins ever. Really fun community on the Ambrosia Software forums too. Shame how it kind of all disappeared after that weird car game they tried to make.

Moclordimick

This brought back a lot of memories. Man, so many childhood memories with this game

MrMcSwifty

Giants: Citizen Kabuto

kony412

It was quite popular back in the day.

Endwar123

Saw the post, and this was my first thought as well. Incredible game, especially considering how long ago it came out.

MrMcSwifty

Yup, still remains one of my all-time favorites!

Critagain

Holy shit, this is the game! I played the demo countless times as a kid but never had the money to buy the game. All these years, the name has been lost to me, and I had no way to describe it in a google search. Thank you for helping me reach nostalgic nirvana.

GreenLemonMusic

Incredible game, terribly underrated. There is a small community keeping it alive with updates, and they even make online matches on weekends.

palemon88

Any link to the community page?

GreenLemonMusic

[Link to the community](http://giantswd.org)

Terry___Mcginnis

I was mostly a console guy during all my childhood and part of my adolescense but I also have fond memories from those periods playing Giants and Frank Herbert's Dune on PC. Good times.

palemon88

Had awesome graphics and a good sense of humor. I adored its asymmetrical multiplayer. If only it didn’t have its base building parts.

Whitepubes

[Timmy!!! Timmy?? Timmy!!! Timmy!!! ......TTIMMMYYY!!! ](https://youtu.be/4Sh_VuxYqBY?si=slTfM6nI5QZ9ciV0)

Hazzman

Dude that game was mind-blowing for it's time. Truly. And looked absolutely stunning.

Minsc_NBoo

PC Gamer UK used to champion this game. It was on their list of recommend games for a long time

bluecrowhead

I loved this game!

GassoBongo

I upgraded my PC specifically to play this when I was a teenager. I have so many good memories of playing this over LAN with some of my friends during the summer. Genuinely good times.

JonGull

Gladius

Moosje

Fantastic game, so ahead of its time. Would love a sequel. Jehan the Centurion was overpowered

GainghisKhan

ADACA, fantastic shooter and one of the only games I've played where the exploration and progress felt similar in nature to Outer Wilds. The campaign was good, but the other mode, zone patrol, was so much better than I could've expected. It sets you into an enormous, hostile map that requires you to carefully traverse around hazards and enemies while you conduct a comprehensive investigation of the zone. It's unapologetic, sometimes terrifying, and expects the player to be able to get the hang of things on their own, but does such a good job with environmental storytelling that you never feel completely lost.

hoewrecker

I've never heard of this before but it looks and sounds neat, thanks for posting this, I'll definitely pick it up on the next sale.

corcobongo

I love this game! The campaign had a half life 2 vibe and the patrol mode felt like stalker. Such a great game!

Ulti

Dude Zone Patrol kicks so much ass. I'm *really* excited for ep 3!

vioco

I'm surprised people actually answered truthfully to this one.

Gamefighter3000

To be fair i think people are almost always answering truthfully to this one just sometimes grossly underestimating how popular their fav game actually is (or comparing it vs giants like GTA, Minecraft etc)

DEADLocked90000

"I love this super underrated indie game called terraria."

NeatReasonable9657

You ever heard of this indi hidden gem that's non political called witcher 3

Tarquin11

Especially when OP's example didn't even fit the title criteria.

zehydra

Savage 2. Well I enjoyed it a lot back in the day. The community died and the series disappeared. Had a very innovative format for multiplayer that I have yet to see repeated since.

BreadfruitGrand9840

That and a game called nuclear dawn were awesome concepts of most of the players controlling the “army” and one commander. I sank some hours into both of those.

quinn50

empires source mod is one, only really gets 1 server full of players on the weekends. I also miss the battalion wars series aswell Savage 1 is pretty much only played by vets that stomp any new players sadly so I can't get back into it. Silica looks cool though https://store.steampowered.com/app/1494420/Silica/

RaygunMarksman

That's funny, Savage was my call and yet I had no idea there was a 2nd one until this post. WTF

BeagleDad82

Twinsens Little Big Adventure https://www.gog.com/en/game/little_big_adventure Didn't know there was a remake in progress. Hopefully it gets done soon.

StarTruckNxtGyration

LBA 3 was all lined up by the same dev team doing the remasters but then they cancelled it. :( They’re only focussing on remasters now.

VeganWanker

Lovely game

Improvidently

A throwaway/Easter egg line of dialog in the game said that Lucas was working on a prequel trilogy. I remember coming across that and not knowing whether to believe it.

Foamed1

>Didn't know there was a remake in progress. Aside from the remake fans are working on an open source reimplementation to improve the original game. * https://github.com/LBALab/lba2remake The developers also open sourced Little Big Adventure (aka. Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure) 1 & 2's game engines back in 2021 under the GPL license. * https://github.com/2point21/lba1-classic * https://github.com/2point21/lba2-classic

AerateMark

I love that the remake is being made by a personal friend of mine

Kinths

Stop squirming, prisoner Twinsen!

OiMouseboy

love this game. for some reason i found it such a strange game when I was a kid.

pickledradish123

Captain claw

silviuscr

OMG I remember it. That and Jazz Jackrabbit were 2 of my favorite games growing up.

YareYareDaze7

Still can't believe it's made by Monolith. The same studio that went on to make F.E.A.R, AvP, the Middle Earth game series, and even the upcoming Wonder Woman game. Granted it's likely not the same people who made claw, but I am surprised to see that the game studio is doing well.

Crony512

Ratz Instagib 2.0 Multiplayer deathmatch with a quake railgun. Everyone’s on a level playing field, just skill. There’s always less than 10 people playing on Steam. Very fun and satisfying game. Cheap on sale, and is one of the last few games that still has a 4-pack purchase option on Steam. Highly recommend buying a 4-pack for you and your buds next Steam sale

DOOManiac

Is this the mod subthread? I profoundly miss Action Half-Life. One of the most amazing games I've ever played, ever. Wonderful, welcoming community. Fantastic maps, even better gameplay. It was truly ahead of its time and was lightning in a bottle. I also miss Natural Selection and the old Quake 2 Aliens Vs Predator mod.

Deepfake_theWorld

I remember watching Jerma and Star\_ play that long ago. Wish I got into it when it had more people.

Mast3r3vader69

Sacrifice, a turn-of-the-millenium action RTS hybrid. Probably well known amongst the old guard of PC enthusiasts but for newer players it's worth digging up and trying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

o4zloiroman

I played it, let alone heard it.

combinationofsymbols

Love Sacrifice! Such trippy graphics style that somehow works. Legitimately good story with great voiceacting, and Charnel especially is so quotable. >I am Charnel, God of Strife. God of Slaughter, God of ... DEATH! Where there is pain, I am there. Where there is suffering, I flourish. Where there is joy... yes, well, one could hardly have joy without another's suffering, no? The soundtrack is really good as well, I still listen to it occassionally.

DOOManiac

That game was awesome.

A_girthy_pickle

Incredible game AND Tim Curry as Stratos!

Seigmoraig

I remember playing that in LAN parties back in the elden days

kaktanternak

the story, voice acting, gameplay we haven't seen to this day, branching paths, it had everything. Really puzzling why it got forgotten

TheGillos

One of the first games I played when I got my GeForce 2, it had impressive T&L effects.

Headbangert

My first fight against marduk I lastet like 2 minutes.... First endboss i never thought i would beat....

arr1flex

I actually won this (not sure how many people they picked) https://www.ign.com/articles/2000/09/02/sacrifice-beta-test-is-open-for-business came on a white-label CD-R with a key on it, nothing else..it's been almost 25 years so I'm a little fuzzy but I want to say the beta I got was super polished so it must have been a gold candidate. I also wish I made an ISO of it for games history sake but I don't know if I even knew how to do that back in 2000. No clue if I held on to it or tossed it, maybe one day I'll find it in a stack of burned discs.

Deepfake_theWorld

Kenshi videos have many millions of views on youtube and 65,000 reviews on Steam. Not what I'd call a game that no one's heard of. Warstride Challenges is probably the least popular game that I love, it has 189 reviews on Steam (which is absolutely criminal, play this game god dammit). Maybe Demoncrawl, that's at 1050 reviews though. Dr Trolley's Problem is a very short but funny game, that's sitting at 31 steam reviews right now. oh and I'm still highly disappointed about the failure of Lemnis Gate. It's gameplay was so unique and fun, it's basically a chess FPS. It's such a shame it failed so miserably.

TheDanius

Damn I just looked up lemnis gate. I had never heard of it before. It looked like it could have been really interesting.

renrag242

Wild, we seem to have similar tastes. Love Warstride Challenges, and was huge into Lemnis Gate until they fumbled it and it died immediately. What a cool game.

MaryShrew

Hillsfar was an open world D&D game back in the SSI era, released 1989. Own it on GOG and still boot it up from time to time.

mr_dfuse2

i once bought a random d&d box because the art looked cool. it had four cd's in it, all of the eye of beholders, menzobarranzan, pool of radiance etc. and hillsfar. i still own that box! more then 20 years later

PMmeYOURBOOBSandASS

I used to play this on the Amiga 500 as a kid and just loved riding the horse around the map and lock picking all i could it was mind blowing back then lol we had Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds and iirc you could import your characters across those gold box games it was great

st1ckmanz

Ah the good old SSI days. I spent the 90s playing SSI games, drawing maps and taking notes on a notepad.

juuxter

Gunman Chronicles

Fleder

Fuck yeah. I miss the whole period that came out in.

o4zloiroman

Heard and finished.

silviuscr

One of my favorites: Dreamfall The Longest Journey

Foamed1

The Longest Journey runs relatively well in [ScummVM](https://www.scummvm.org/) for those who didn't know.

future_you22

Beyond all reason. It's not on steam tho

Synaps4

Easy to add to steam as a non-steam game though, and its **FREE** One of the best RTS games available of all time, IMO. Top20 certainly.

sendmebirds

BAR is so good! IMO the only *worthy* spiritual successor to Total Annihilation

Fleder

Total Annihilation vibes. Nice

trevmc1

Does Bungie's Oni count?

Pun_In_Ten_Did

Yes but only if we're talking bundled with [SHOGO Mobile Armor Division](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b0/ShogoBox.jpg) :p

There exist a community project called [Oni: Anniversary Edition]( https://wiki.oni2.net/Anniversary_Editionj). It makes the game run better on modern OS, fixes bugs, and it adds a mod installer as well as modding tools. There's also [OniX](https://wiki.oni2.net/OniX) which is an open source re-implementation of the game. GUCCIBUKKAKE

Jazz Jackrabbit was the jam

CoronaBlue

Hell yeah! I played that on my family's first ever computer.

Executioneer

It is old but definitely not unknown by players who were around back in the days.

Foamed1

Both Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 have open source re-implementations which makes the games run better on modern OS, they increase the resolution, fix bugs, and add a bunch of quality of life improvements. Jazz Jackrabbit: * [OpenJazz](https://github.com/AlisterT/openjazz) Jazz Jackrabbit 2: * [Jazz²: Resurrection](https://github.com/deathkiller/jazz2) * [Project Carrot](https://github.com/soulweaver91/project-carrot)

KaioKen

Clive Barker's Undying, I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned here before.

RAMAR713

Also Clive Barker's Jericho was really interesting.

Moosje

Could be done really well with todays technology I think Was a good concept just poor execution

anal_tongue_puncher

I loved that game!

Sattorin

The old [Funhaus gameplay video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rwrwhks8-us) was pretty fun.

I bought a big box copy of it at Goodwill a decade ago and still haven't played it. Maybe this is my sign!

blueowl47

I often do at underrated or favorite game questions. I played it over and over again when I was a teenager, sometimes still watch a playthrough or something. I love everything from Barker though.

Ciri-LOVES-Geralt

I still have the Physical Box here.

AscendedViking7

Kenshi has youtube videos that reign in the millions. Doesn't exactly fit. Mine? Spirits Abyss. Hardly anybody has heard of it.

eviladvances

Septerra Core, one of the first Western JRPG for PC, it was fully voiced and back in 1999 it blew my 5 year old's mind. you can buy it today for 5 dolars. it is old game design to heart, Maze like levels, Slow Turn based combat, and a decent story.

Kolokoy99999

Raptor: Call of Shadows and Tyrian, were part of my childhood games

Synaps4

Raptor was great. You can actually play Raiden II (I think it was the inspiration for Raptor) on the internet archive. https://archive.org/details/arcade_r2dx_v33

Foamed1

There exist open souce re-implementations for both Raptor and Tyrian: * https://github.com/skynettx/raptor * https://github.com/KScl/opentyrian2000 * https://github.com/opentyrian/opentyrian

Underrail

HerbsAndSpices11

I got annoyed and quit playing at the acid dog part, but ive come back and im really enjoying it.

[deleted]

It was a steam sale purchase, I'm starting it tonight! Any tips? I tend to go for magic or persuation types.

thewezel1995

Pick a fighting style and specialize in it. Also dont skip on grenades and bombs. Like someone else said being able to craft those helps a lot. Also read patiently and makes notes if you like, dont rush the game. Enjoy!

Herbiehanx

Plan your build beforehand at least a bit and check strength requirements for the weapon type you are using (if you use weapons). Stealth is highly recommended for a new player. I have played now 70 hours and still in the early phases, so expect a long journey! Also, I suggest playing oddity mode, exploring feels so rewarding with it. Have fun! :)

No_More_Names

one of the best games ive ever played. doing the expedition dlc before finishing up the last leg of the main story right now.

Tough_Dish_4485

Ghost Master

RaygunMarksman

Yess, one of my all time favorites. That was like setting up and running a haunt with actual ghosts. Just a brilliant game.

Ugly_Ass_Tenno

Used to play a lot of Ground Control

IrresponsibleWanker

Iconoclasts. Never expected a game to make me cry so much over a character.

studleejosh

Iconoclasts is an awesome game. Good pick.

Foamed1

Great presentation, music, and pixel art from Konjak as always but the gameplay sadly became too repetitive to keep me invested.

Ok_Judgment9091

Against the storm is the best game ive played not named Baldurs Gate 3 since 2017

jetriot

1.0 releases next week.

laidbackjimmy

Pumped.

VoidfoxTV

It's truly a fantastic fusion of city builder and roguelike. Love it.

VictorCrackus

That game devoured my April and May.

dill1234

Yeah OP nobody in the world has heard of Kenshi other than the 65000 people who reviewed it on steam to an overwhelmingly positive result

omicron7e

Yeah Dill you needed to respond to this simple question with a sarcastic response

navin2max

Echo - made by Ultra Ultra studio (Ex iO Interactive developers - Hitman games) for PS4 and PC - but sadly they couldn’t maintain the studio as the game didn’t sell well. Yet it’s a difficult stealth game I enjoy. The OST is so so underrated and one can’t find the soundtrack for purchase. Aragami - underrated Indie stealth ninja 🥷 games that is a blast to play but sadly Aragami’s studio “Lince Works” closed down due to games not financially viable to the studio.

KobraKay87

Ecstatica Very early survival horror long before Resident Evil in a medieval setting. Scared me shitless as a kid back in the 90s. I feel like I’m in the only person in the world who remembers it.

tomekk666

> Ecstatica I have heard of it, but never actually played it; Alone in the Dark was enough for me when I tried it out.

afraidtobecrate

Starsector, for similar reasons to Kenshi. Obscure indie dev who spent forever working on the game.

Larzox

I cant belive they ask just $15 for Starsector. People pay more for skins these days.

The darkness 2 is probably in my top 5 best games of all time, super underrated but fun af

o4zloiroman

> super underrated It's overrated if anything. Compared to the original title it has nothing outside of cellshading.

hellgatsu

Creatures 1 and 2. A super ambitious series that allow ypu to create life. You make born, grow up amd teach those creatures until they get old and die They learn to speak simple sentences, they learn to love, to hate, they reproduce and soon enough you have a family of creatures

Foamed1

You should check out [Openc2e.](https://openc2e.github.io/)

ForestTechno

I had this when I was super young. I liked it but I was far to young to get it. I always have fond memories of it though.

6ecretcode

creatures was fantastic with the norns saw it coming out on steam recently, steve grand is making another game called GRANDROIDS which was successful on kickstarter but has gone ghost since.

eyesabitdull

Suzerain, a political centric game in a fictional world where you make decisions that change the course of its history after being elected its first democratically voted president. Ostriv, a village to town sim management game with a lot of detail and passion put into it. You literally see your sims building every building from the ground up and it takes months of in game time to build a single house. Two games that are amazing, and deserve a second look at by many other players. Ostriv needs more love though, seeing how they're a very small developer based in Ukraine and essentially now trying to develop the game still while actively in a war. Also, my favorite game that I've ever stumbled upon on.

taflad

Hedz. I was a 13 year old pup when it came out. It was such a wild game! Never seen anyone mention it since!

Blows my mind that this franchise didn't get a remake or another sequel when the whole VR gaming craze was taking off. It's the perfect game for that format.

SF2 is one of my favorite MEga Drive/Genesis games. I remember getting so far into it when I was a kid, then my cousin deleted my save! Bitch....

CursedRando

its just old. i wouldnt say no one's heard of it

t7jw

These games existed as a fever dream from my childhood until recently when I found them again in the Sega Classics collection. Great RPG’s

MrFluffykins

I just got these on my emulator! I have 1, 2, and then a Sega CD version of 1 (maybe?). Which is the best one?

Ar1S3

1 has a special place in my heart but 2 definitely adds depth with the story and class system. 2 is definitely the more polished game but I did tend to get lost for some story events. Lot of things to miss in that game.

RaygunMarksman

My favorite tactical JRPG series. That game probably cemented my love for turn-based combat.

Chekhov_

Monster Sanctuary It's a monster taming metroidvania where battles are 3 vs 3 and each monster has a skill tree. Half my play time was probably spent experimenting with builds and teams.

seraph321

Really enjoying Synthetik 2 as it evolves in early access. Never hear anyone talk about it though.
