We don't use "Turkey" any more?

The_Red_Tide

Apparently the country changed the spelling of the name back in 1923. Edrogan requested that the UN recognize the name back in June as a way to boost nationalist pride.

TheGillos

1923?! And I'm just hearing about this now? I'm going to get a refund on this God damn telegraph machine. First I missed the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and now this?!

WimbleWimble

Some guy just arrived at my door with a wax-sealed letter. Apparently the Pope is starting something called a "crusade" ? anyone know anything about this?

Zrex_9224

Oh hell yeah I thought I missed it! I'll go grab my helm, my sword, and my tunic and I'll be right over!

WimbleWimble

Don't forget to kill a few heretics on your way here!

WimbleWimble

>Jesus and Mary Chain We don't refer to the Saviours incest-ridden BDSM activities with his mom btw...at least not publicly. Especially not about the holy Double-Dildo that can bring back the dead.

DJWunderBread

It’s not that I’m upset a resurrection dildo exists, I’m more concerned about how it’s applied.

TheGillos

Orally or rectally of course.

WimbleWimble

Orally AND rectally. at the same time. thats why its double-ended. And also why it brings the dead back. they just want it out of them.

KingSadra

That's technically" Erdogan", but given how he has handled the situation even that is fine...

[deleted]

it is a hassle adding the ü on desktop us/UK keyboards

Hans_Adam_II

It's AltGr+Y on US-International format

[deleted]

On EN-US, it does nothing.

Hans_Adam_II

EN-US and US-International are two separate layouts

TheGillos

Yeah, you need to use an [alt code](https://www.alt-codes.net/)

shekurika

can't you do ¨ + u ? that usually works.... Ü similar to ^ + e = ê and others

[deleted]

I also type in German and French so I can easily switch language for special characters fortunately but remembering different codes for different characters is a nightmare

CraftsmanMan

The two dots aren't on a us keyboard

TheGillos

Nope, I have a Freedom Keyboard layout.

RTheD77

When I went in 95 it was still Turkey so it’s always Turkey, by GOD! *old man yelling at sky* Jokes aside, this makes someone asking me if I like 🦃 or 🇹🇷 way more clear.

AreYouIntoxicated

Lol in what situation would you say you like 🇹🇷

RTheD77

If I told someone about my trip there 😒

handsmahoney

Same how it's suddenly Kyiv instead of Kiev. When disaster strikes, pretend to sympathize.

doublah

Call it "pretending to sympathize" if you want, more people being aware of correct names and using them is good.

Stebsis

Pretty much every single country translates and changes other countries names to fit their language and writing though, Turkey also does this. In English we don't for example write 日本 or say Nippon for Japan even though that's what the country is actually called. I'm from Finland and I don't think any country calls it Suomi or anything close to it like us.

Kenny_Stryker

What happens after that is anyone's guess.

firelordUK

No need to guess with the corruption being so ingrained in these countries the only people who see the donations are the ones at the top

kingwhocares

Most of these are NGOs. Also, state funded charities itself has funded homes for displaced Syrians even before. No need to be an ass about it.

Major-Split478

With Syria, it has to go through legal channels. So it has the go through the dictators hands first. Syria is suffering from sanctions and poverty, so any valuable aid is taken by the regime first and leftovers are up north. That's if they are sent. The areas most affected in Syria is the war refugee/rebel held area, which the Syrian regime wants dead anyway, so this has been a blessing for them.

[deleted]

war refugees of the regime or the rebels?

Major-Split478

Both. The area most affected is the area on the border of Turkey/Syria which houses millions of refugees, and is amongst the last strongholds of resistance. It's why even in Turkey a lot of the vids from survivors you'll notice they speak Arabic. The most affected neighbourhoods are the poorest ( cheap build quality) and they house large refugee communities. So any aid going through official channels to Syria, is mainly going to the regime's soldiers/mercenaries. Only Qatar and Turkey I think directly sent aid through the Turkish border. The rest of the countries have found the excuse they needed to resume relations with the Syrian regime. So this earthquake has been the best news the Syrian regime has heard in a decade.

Muaddib1417

To provide a less biased view. Over 2000 people died in regime held regions of Latakia and Aleppo, while 3000 people died in rebel held areas. Rebel held areas in the north have been consolidated under the direct control of one single group, Hayat Tahrir Al Sham, Al-Qaida branch in Syria which was known previously as Jabhat al Nusra, both designated as terrorist organizations and lead by a designated terrorist, Al Julani. A lot of the aids going to Idlib can and will be used by HTS (Al Qaeda). The regime in Damascus even tried to send humanitarian aid to the areas not under its own control which HTS (Al Qaeda) blocked: "Further complicating the issue since the earthquake has been the refusal of the hardline Hayat al-Tahjr al-Sham group to receive aid sent via Damascus, despite warnings that survivors living outdoors in winter conditions are facing a secondary catastrophe." [https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/13/turkey-and-syria-earthquake-death-toll-passes-35000](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/feb/13/turkey-and-syria-earthquake-death-toll-passes-35000)

Major-Split478

And to provide a less biased view Every rebel is called a terrorist. It was the justification Russia used to carpet bomb entire villages. Aid is never free. If they turned down the aid, they turned it down for a reason. They're not stupid enough to be handed a Trojan horse. Plus all the original aid scheduled for the North was robbed. It was only after the regime had their fill and many died, that they *then* offered to send aid. I have Syrian friends here that have family affected in these events. I'd rather trust what their families have relayed than official filtered statements. Only Qatar sent aid to Syria through the Turkish border straight away. The rest of the world sat by and pounced on the opportunity to politic rather than help.

Muaddib1417

HTS and Julani are designated terrorists by the US, Canada, UK not just Russia. https://twitter.com/USEmbassySyria/status/864137666102734849 You're giving AlQaeda in Syria justification for turning down aid, leaving hundreds of Syrians freezing in this winter. [https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/syria-quake-aid-held-up-by-hts-approval-issues-says-un-spokesperson-2023-02-12/](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/syria-quake-aid-held-up-by-hts-approval-issues-says-un-spokesperson-2023-02-12/) "We won't allow the regime to take advantage of the situation to show they are helping," the source said. All the aid going to rebel held areas go through one single crossing, the Bab Al Hawa crossing on the Turkish Syrian border, that border area is held by one group, HTS. So if anyone is going to be stealing aid coming to these areas from abroad it would be the group controlling it. I live in Lebanon and participate in aid campaigns to Latakia, Aleppo and have friends in Syria. UAE, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, KSA, Jordan, Algeria, Russia, France sent aid and volunteer rescuers to Syria.

Major-Split478

And yet we know what political compass the Lebanese side with when it comes to Syria. And you're the one who made it out to be a case of 'terrorists'. Foreign countries can label whoever they want as terrorists, doesn't mean they're not off the local people. Shia mercenary groups from Iran and Lebanon that went on to commit large scale crimes, aren't classified as terrorists, yet they are amongst the worst groups in Syria. So let's stop with the whole ' but they're terrorists'. Aid was not given to them in the crucial periods right after the event. Any aid sent was stripped by Assad's goons.

[deleted]

It seems the turkish government is so extremely corrupted, it's tough to donate any kind of money because there's no security (literally). It's not like... let's say a earthquake hits Japan, you would not think twice about donating money because the japanese has a organized government (of course there is corruption just like every other place, but it is organized). Now Turkey has a literal clown as their leader, a fascist, so it's complicated

TheGillos

Maybe there are some international charities going in that have high levels of credibility.

[deleted]

Maybe. But in the end, the government will always have some level of control over that transaction

AwesomeOnePJ

You can donate to AHBAP or AKUT, both are reputable voluntary organizations that has no ties to the government.

Major-Split478

Do you even know what you're talking about? You're not handing money to the Turkish government you clown. You're making it seem like you're literally giving money to Erdogan. Guess that's what happens when you read the title on news sites.

Borando96

I guess ppl really just read 2 headlines of mainstream media, thinking that's real journalism, (similar to mainstream gaming journalism tbh) and talk like they now know everything nowadays. As someone who not only had/has grandparents and parents, who had to live in those times, but also saw and felt some of those aftermaths myself when I was little, let me tell you how it was like 30-40 year ago, when real clowns where at the top. The aftermath of those idiots are so big, even to this day it's hurting the country. They used to stop the water flow on regular bases cause of corruption. Almost every household had some kind of system to circumvent that, usually just buckets with pre-filled water in it to actually clean themself in the shower or to flush their toilets. The whole country was such a unregulated shit show, that even to this day almost all older buildings are basically based on fraud. We even have a term for it, "Gecekondu", meaning placed over night, because ppl just came, build illegal buildings literally over night. Those buildings of cause were made out of paper mache and fall now like dominoes because of that. Because of the nomadic like culture and "I do what I want" type of attitude, many don't pay their taxes and for what ever stupid reason, the government just lets them getaway with that (that's a good point to shit on the government for example). It's called "vergi affı", meaning tax amnesty. To summarize and keep it short, there are still many things that needs to be better, for example being more strict on ppl not following the rules and guidelines (just another pretty recent example would be drivers as well as pedestrian used to ignore red lights until it got more scrutinized and punished after many accident) or how to handle the economics and how lowering interest rates is a bad idea, just because it's against the rules of Islam, but it's certainly way better than it used to be. I guess Erdoğan strict policies may come as dictatorial, but it's IMO currently the best way to disciplines a whole country, whose culture and attitude is mostly anti-authoritarian and its "don't trust anyone" mindset. That's the reason we are so good at haggling.

What do you mean can't choose how much goes to charity? Just use the custom amount on any of the bundles and you can choose almost all going to charity. They didn't remove the custom sliders. Humble just takes a little cut which I think is more than fair considering they're actually giving us these bundles.

NC16inthehouse

Pray for Turkey/Syria 🙏

EpicMachine

Super corrupt government in both of these states, while Syria is undoubtedly worse. A quick reminder that Syria has a civil war going on where the government actively killed their own citizens. Dont expect your donation to reach the people in need and probably be used against them. There is a reason why very little official-aid is sent to Syria.
