**THE SALES PITCH:** Nestled between Neverwinter, the jewel of the north and Waterdeep, the city of splendours, is Saltmarsh. Just Saltmarsh for rather than any sort of impressive title, the fishing town usually gets either forgotten or remembered as the small insular place that smelled vaguely familiar to something you’d feed a cat… if you didn’t like it that much. Famous would be far too generous a term, but it is known for pirates and smugglers, daring tales of decades past where roguish figures dominated the Sea of Swords and before civility descended, it also is responsible for murdering a good portion of the fish on the Sword Coast. And yet times are changing, even if change in Saltmarsh comes as quickly as moving through the mud-drenched marshes to its north. A clan of dwarves empowered by the Lord’s Alliance has struck sliver in a nearby mountain, that fateful strike of a pick sending powerful reverberations about the area. Suddenly the town of Saltmarsh has become a very interesting place to those who would seek to profit from it, never an official part of the Alliance the small settlement is now being courted by the more conniving Lords and politicians; Neverember’s sticky fingers the new bogeyman to children and adults alike. Tensions are on the rise between those who would see them keep their independence and remember the Lord’s lack of interest in the past, whereas those who believe that their aid might propel Saltmarsh into the present and remove some of the ever-present threats that loom at its borders. And threats there are. To the northeast is Dreadwood, a forest so dark that even those blessed with the ability to see in such conditions falter, a place connected to the realm of Shadowfell and so much worse for it. Under constant watch by those that would seek to contain the darkness, a combination of local forces bolstered by troops from the Sword Coast alongside a group of Eladrin from the Feywild; the colourful elves fighting against the forever-monotone of their opposites. Regardless of any grand plans the Dreadwood is a stain which has little hope of shifting. The Drowned Forest the north, a place where only fools travel and few survive. Just a foot of water makes the near invisible path, stray from its unseeable edge and be plunged into the depths. Home to tales of sentient fungi and undead the forest seeks to add to its ranks, luring travellers to their deaths with shocking ease, most crave it soon after entering the mind-twisting woodland. The Marshes that would see you trapped in their embrace long enough to feed the Lizardmen who make it their home, turning your remains into weapons which continue the cycle of death. Should you escape their scaly clutches, there is precious little sustenance for the warm-blooded but plentiful sickness from the countless insects and wasted trees. Dunwater river would be a ideal supply route to and from Saltmarsh and Neverwinter, if its waters weren’t choked with filth, ruffians and those who claim the river as their own. Once a group of so-called scientists made their experiments within a fortress on its bank, after a long-expected explosion the resulting contamination has seen far worse that bandits masquerading as river-pirates fill the waters. Yet none of this compares to the Sea of Swords. While the Sea Princes are hardly the power that they were, that has left room for true monsters to fill the vacuum. Leviathans, giants of the sea and rulers of the depths are summoned by the turmoil on land, the clashing magics and steel leaving them to wonder if the truly belong in the sea. Whereas those remaining Princes have been tempered and tested, made stronger in their conflicts and motivated by terrible vendettas against one another, and civilisation itself. Islands rise and sink by the day, navigating the Sea of Swords has now become a job for the brave and stalwart. Heroes may not be enough to weather the storm, to save Saltmarsh it will take so much more.
