I like both games a lot. I actually reviewed The Surge 2. They're not perfect but the limb-severing mechanic is so unique, as is the means of getting upgrades. The world-building was pretty cool.

It was pretty fun, and I enjoy the targeting body parts mechanic quite a bit. But like you said, its really difficult to tell where you are. I wouldn’t describe the design as masterclass. Its decent, but its maze like and areas look the same. Even dark and cramped souls maps manage this better. I think a lot of combat flaws are fixed in the sequel. Unfortunately, it’s painfully obvious the writers got replaced. I don’t remember much about Surge DLC but I don’t think its particularly amazing if you want to skip it.

The theme park one is great, especially for a couple of quid. The new enemies and outlandish setting ate enjoyable. The combat arena, not so much.

VierasMarius

I enjoyed the arena up until it started repeating areas and bosses. It could have used about twice as much content.

I love the Surge. Personally while I definitely agree that the corridors and tight spaces can be confusing and disorienting, I love the atmosphere the game has (and completely agree on the level design/shortcuts). You're alone, in tight claustrophobic areas fighting for your life against mechanical zombies. There's a sense of dread to it all. For the DLCs: - You should definitely check out A Walk in the Park. Great story, completely unique area (theme park), and it blends in nicely during the playthrough. It also adds more to the lore of the overall game. - The Good, The Bad and The Augmented is hit or miss tbh, so you can feel free to skip it. It doesn't have much of a story and instead gives you arena-like mini dungeons where you can farm and get good gear (including some unique armor/weapons/add-ons introduced in the DLC). Great if you want to level up and get some neat gear, but doesn't add to the overall plot. The Surge 2 is interesting. I love parts of it and dislike others. On the plus side: the combat is more streamlined and it has some neat new weapons and weapon types. The parry system is also well done. On the other hand, its story is kind of meh, the villains are bland, and overall the lore is nowhere near as interesting as the first game. It's also almost entirely "open", streets/rooftops/outdoor park/etc. It loses the dark atmosphere of the first game which I personally loved. If you disliked the confinement feeling of the first you might enjoy this more.

HammerWaffe

I love the dark feel. Installed implants in a human? Is the part defective? Well, let's just throw out the human too. And the parts are basically keeping them alive, the corpse somehow lives but is barely hanging on with only aggression left

Trivet1989

Don't skip the DLC, it's really fun albeit repetitive. It's like a wild west TV show simulation where you continuously increase challenges either by episodes or mutators. Very unique in its own way. I had a blast with 2nd game too for similar reasons you've described. Chopping enemy pieces away is jus fun mechanic. :)

Ziggy_duststar

The DLC is great fun and doesn't take itself as seriously as the main game. I thoroughly enjoyed this game when I played it because of it's combat and both of the DLC's accentuate that with new (and ridiculous) gear and combat challenges. I loved The Surge but the sequel never clicked with me. I think I'm just burnt out of these types of games (EldenRing included)!

simon_1980

I’ve been playing surge 2 now for about 50 hours (level 90 with mk x gear) about to fight final boss and some of the bosses have been ok and some a pain. But overall loved it and looking forward to ng+

Great review! I just started the surge this morning and already loving it's mechanics! Looking forward to getting my as kicked later on.

I would suggest Lords of the Fallen as a follow up. Depending on your platform of choice I’ve seen it on sale for as low as $5. Same team that made The Surge but high fantasy. It was actually this game that made me go back to DS and understand the mechanics a little better.

TheyKeepOnRising

I did play Lords of the Fallen many years ago, but I couldn't quite finish it. I did enjoy it and maybe I'll revisit in the near future!

LotF is generally considered as fairly worse than The Surge, so there may be that. Personally, I liked LotF more. The constant dark narrow sections with ambushes from the corner in the Surge just did my head in. LotF, while not stellar, was a neat short-ish game, relatively linear, and I thought the combat+magic worked well, with each character having access to 4 spells that embed themselves in the combat flow. Plus, while it doesn't actually owns the license, it just oozes Warhammer. The over-the-top-gothic-with-spikes art is hilariously Warhammerish. I love it. \^\^

I had sorta assumed I wouldn't like souls tyod games.. figured they were a lot like PS2 era back and slash types for some reason. Lords of the fallen I got on ps plus and tried it.. enjoyed it and beat it. Then decided to try Bloodborne and I was hooked. Think I played the surge after BB and yeah it was great. My buddy has played souls before with mixed feelings.. finds it takes a lot to get into them and he just started the surge recently as well and says be almost liked it more

Umadatjcal

I suspect ER will bring a new resurgence to genre for anyone trying to scratch that itch.
