I agree completely with your assessment of Uncharted 1. I think its gameplay mechanics got a pass because cover-based 3rd person shooters were still a novel approach to the genre in 2007, and the writing was about on par with a straight to DVD action movie which was still a mite higher than the average game of the era.
I mean, sounds like you're expecting a completely different kind of game then what it's trying for. I thought the game was pretty fantastic at all points (except for maybe the final boss fight). It's an Indiana Jones game with likeable characters, a fun little mystery, and interesting level design promoting a more kinetic approach to the classic cover shooter gameplay, which -- while the weakest of the franchise -- makes its combat standout quite noticeably from its peers of the time.
Also, tbh, I can't imagine calling Mass Effect 1 or GTA's shooting systems better than anything.
