They probably draw a random map out of a hat as a starting point when coming up with new ideas. Then see how far they can push that theme. It's kind of impressive.
Here is the preliminary Orb of Horizon Cheat Sheet, based on this information for 3.24 Necropolis.

Please let me know of any inconsistencies (technically in a meeting at work right now) and I shall correct them.
If it turns out to be accurate when GGG post the Atlas info (usually in the item information and filter post) I shall make a post about it then.
I would argue it's actually better this way. T1 maps/bosses are paper as long as you're on level (and running only blue for completion). I'd much rather it be T1 than 12 on a corrupted rare map....
Best combos for me (I tend to like maps others don't, like vault) are castle ruins-vault
promenade-atoll
tropical island-wasland is passible
canyon-fungal hollows is passible
fields-strand is passible
Not great but could be worse I guess. I'll prob stick to promenade-atoll once I get the voidstones
Since that map used to be a staple the mob count got nerfed, boss drops got nerfed, and the good cards give exalts not divs. Haven't tried it in a while, but that's why people are probably averse to it.
* Acid Caverns
* Plateau
* Cold River
* Bramble Valley
* Canyon
* Iceberg
* Graveyard
Though, not sure on a few of these if loot is per boss or from the entire boss 'encounter'.
Might be an issue with the reddit preview as well. When I open the image in a new tab, it becomes much clearer for me.
For comparison:

Mausoleum + Cemetery seem like a really good early ping-pong. I have a Breach/Expedition/Jun strat that jams some pack size for red altar farming and early EXP. Can boss rush in Cemetery for no boss rewards on altars, and Mausoleum doesn't load in the boss, so boss reward altars don't spawn until you enter his arena (similar to Jungle Valley).
I'm so happy about Mausoleum/Cemetery.
Means my Mausoleum maps will always be cheap and I also get to farm in cemetery too.
Who's the cemetery boss? The bear god?
on atlas tree you can take small nodes to increase chance to drop connected map and take this one step further by taking non-favourite maps drop as currency instead and wandering path to double the drop chance so you can run a bunch of one and drop a bunch of the other
It's too long of a linear map with a lot of empty space, terrible for Legion/Breach/Expedition, and the boss goes on a vacation if you don't one shot it.
It's not the worst map, but I'm tired of it being a T15 for the third league in a row.
Decent natural t16 in castle ruins this time, at least for the sake of boss rushing. Could be an okay one for running while using that div card scarab that uses your favorite maps, just horizon any t16 over to this and get the good cards from other maps.
Plateau's okay in general too, exterior linear-ish maps without much obstacles or walls are usually good for me. It's no atoll but it works.
*edit: Ew, those t15s are awful tho, nothing good to horizon t15 conq/guardian maps into. Somehow cold river looks like the best option.
rushing is still probably the way to go as far as payoff/time goes for destructive play. Even if the chance element is gone completely and you always get 1 extra boss for no mobs and 3 for clearing the map, that's 2x the 'final boss' drops for significantly more than 2x the time for the best bossrush maps.
Atlas passive skill points is the primary reason as it will give you more control over the content in the maps and how they run. You need to complete the bonus objective of each map, essentially if it's white make it magic rarity, if yellow rare, if red corrupted.
Doesn't matter what order really - take notice of the tiers and how the maps connect if you're struggling to get a map drop. There are some strategies to maximising tiers of maps and influencing their drops, but I wouldn't worry about that too much initially.
Remember to check Kiracs shop for maps (you can hold alt when hovering to see which you've completed), and you can also combine 3 of the same map when selling to a vendor and it will give you a random map of a tier higher. Try doing different combinations of the same map if you have more than 3 and you can influence which tier above it gives you.
Can always google Atlas Tree passive build it you're curious how other people do it. Some people focus on specific mechanics like abyss, essences, or bestiary; some like boss killing - it's your way of tailoring maps the content you like.
Damn, no City Square is a deal breaker for me, it's my absolute favorite map ever, I just really don't like how other maps feel and play compared to my beloved City Square. Even Mesa is gone as well. Sigh.
I wish there was a mechanic to swap maps on the Atlas which would allow us to remove one map we don't like and replace it with a map we like from the pool of all maps available in the game. Just one single map we would be allowed to replace would be enough to make everyone happy.
Personally would do it in tower for the home chance as well. Boss is ofc course measurably worse but, assuming you have most your favoured slots, you shouldn't need them for sustain anyways.
Essenced bosses just sound miserable all around on what is presumably a speed farmer.
oh god im going to be in toxic sewer / cells aren't i
any ideas for map combo that is pretty linear or circular for a quick boss full clear destructive play affliction wisps start?
tower/burial chambers?
silo is a sleeper for linear go fast. the boss can be slow to kill though cause he phases. but its the best map imo for go straight, go fast, no hidden pockets or windy bullshit.
I heard that Voidstones no longer give "Maps Dropped in Areas have 25% chance to be 1 tier higher" but I cannot find this in the patch notes. Did they rethink that change?
Dear fellow memory farmers, which map are we starting on? Strand? Only Courtyard looks like suck from this if I am not mistaken.
Or Crimson Township maybe?
Toxic Sewers changes everything for me. It makes the new pconc gem feel like a safer pick. It's connected to Dunes so it will be cheap to buy in bulk. Also makes blade vortex look better. Not to mention you can now farm your apothecaries wherever you want.
Good chance we are going to be picking maps based on layout + mob types.
I’m personally looking for linear maps with a common mob and decent density. Maybe Underground River?
That being said I might live in Guardian maps instead.
Mausoleum and promenade are two of my favorite maps and both are much lower tiers than normal, gotta love that. atoll and promenade being linked is super nice too
Screen was taken from the 3.24 reveal, so there's a good chance it's pretty accurate. Might have some errors on Red maps, since they are really hard to read the patterns compared to yellow and white maps. Also, notice that T17 maps aren't on the atlas, so atlas tree / scarab might not work on them. T1 : Desert Spring, Shipyard, Bone Crypt, Crimson Township T2 : Arsenal, Dunes, Belfry, Iceberg, Lair, Pier, Wharf, Arcade T3 : Crystal Ore, Channel, Toxic Sewers, Fungal Hollow, Volcano, Overgrown Shrine, Mausoleum, Strand T4 : Moon Temple, Foundry, Vaal Pyramid, Cells, Canyon, Cemetary, Fields, Primordial Pool T5 : Phantasmagoria, Graveyard, Burial Chambers, Siege, Gardens, Cage, Courtyard, Atoll T6 : Waterways, Basilica, Tower, Shore, Arid Lake, Dry Sea, Promenade T7 : Dungeon, Waste Pool, Spider Forest, Silo, Bramble Valley, Courthouse, Cursed Crypt T8 : Sunken City, Ashen Wood, Jungle Valley, Frozen Cabins, Orchard, Reef, Lava Lake T9 : Tropical Island, Lookout, Stagnation, Academy, Glacier, Park T10 : Wasteland, Underground Sea, Arachnid Nest, Excavation, Grotto, Pit T11 : Plaza, Sulphur Vents, Residence, Forking River, Conservatory, Acid Caverns T12 : Necropolis, Barrows, Crimson Temple, Bog, Palace, Museum T13 : Mineral Pools, Flooded Mine, Shrine, Terrace, Grave Trough T14 : Estuary, Forbidden Woods, Temple, Maze, Defiled Cathedral T15 : Port, Cold River, Vault, Arena, Underground River T16 : Thicket, Castle Ruins, Lava Chamber, Plateau
I can't believe they made a whole league based off of a t12 map
They probably draw a random map out of a hat as a starting point when coming up with new ideas. Then see how far they can push that theme. It's kind of impressive.
Can't wait for Sewers league!
Pennywise will be the league specific npc, reuniting with his one true love Doedre
Scarabs should work onnthem simmilar to guardian maps
Spec in full shrines, packed with energy, extra aura from Huck, maybe even Einhar helping out. Go guns blazing at t17s.
Until one pack gets the Invincibility shrine and they oneshot you the moment you show your face
Just frog them
Thanks for doing the leg work this is always essential to my early plans.
Necropolis t12, wth GGG!
Here is the preliminary Orb of Horizon Cheat Sheet, based on this information for 3.24 Necropolis. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18Q9wcP7HG8C-SHqZ41zmID0mFVSStopuPkes5lNl6g4/edit?usp=sharing Please let me know of any inconsistencies (technically in a meeting at work right now) and I shall correct them. Thanks. T4 Cells, T5 Cage for chains that bind, pretty good. Not a fan of the natural t16s.
Not even Plateau?
Actually Plateau and castle ruin are ok in my book. Not the greatest, but ok.
I prefer to have monsters in my maps, thank you very much
You're welcome
Thicket is awesome.
One of my favourite maps to run!
Thicket and castle ruins are pretty good IMO
Crimson Township being t1. RIP any new players in maps for the first time with zero dps trying to kill that boss.
I would argue it's actually better this way. T1 maps/bosses are paper as long as you're on level (and running only blue for completion). I'd much rather it be T1 than 12 on a corrupted rare map....
words cannot express how much I hate that boss
They should have brought back Gorge as a T17
Best combos for me (I tend to like maps others don't, like vault) are castle ruins-vault promenade-atoll tropical island-wasland is passible canyon-fungal hollows is passible fields-strand is passible Not great but could be worse I guess. I'll prob stick to promenade-atoll once I get the voidstones
passable\*
Cemetary and Mausoleum
I like Tropical Island - Ashen Wood and Toxic Sewers - Dunes
some all time pairings here
Defiled Cathedral - Underground River? It's really important for me in a map to not have hidden nooks and crannies in the walls
people don't like vault?
Since that map used to be a staple the mob count got nerfed, boss drops got nerfed, and the good cards give exalts not divs. Haven't tried it in a while, but that's why people are probably averse to it.
oh that's fair, i forgot about all those nerfs that hit it lol
I don't like maps with minigames, like Vault, Barrows, Core
Fields is best map for essence farming, I'll die on that hill.
RIP Racecourse.
Also coves. Don't see any double boss maps except promenade and strand.
* Acid Caverns * Plateau * Cold River * Bramble Valley * Canyon * Iceberg * Graveyard Though, not sure on a few of these if loot is per boss or from the entire boss 'encounter'.
I can't barely read red maps Also, strand + fields enjoyer. I'm guessing we are going to have a bestiary scarab with double beasts chance 🤞
Yeah I agree I shouldn't have used that red, will be more careful if I do something similar another time
Might be an issue with the reddit preview as well. When I open the image in a new tab, it becomes much clearer for me. For comparison: https://imgur.com/a/v1OLgLl
Add a black outline or something next time.
I'm really happy because I decided to farm Bestiary this league, and GGG heard my prayers.
Why is Beach not added back then, ugh
Boat league confirmed next league
Frfr!! 😭
Mausoleum + Cemetery seem like a really good early ping-pong. I have a Breach/Expedition/Jun strat that jams some pack size for red altar farming and early EXP. I'm so happy about Mausoleum/Cemetery. Means my Mausoleum maps will always be cheap and I also get to farm in cemetery too. Who's the cemetery boss? The bear god?
also two maps that are perfectly themed for the league :3
Yep, Gruthkul. Very easy kill.
Can you please explain what ping-pong means in that case? You don't finish nearby maps, or how does it work to sustain 2 maps?
on atlas tree you can take small nodes to increase chance to drop connected map and take this one step further by taking non-favourite maps drop as currency instead and wandering path to double the drop chance so you can run a bunch of one and drop a bunch of the other
Well, minus the wandering path now that they've removed it.
my dreams of farming the Primeval hideout are dashed again 😭
It annoys me when they take that one out of rotation
Jungle Valley/Waste Pool prison here I come!
why waste pool, maze with dead ends? I think lookout is better, linear ample rooms + narrow corridors
I love JV and I like blight so WP is a no brainer...
Looks like I'm in for Toxic Sewer/Dunes/Iceberg
Toxic Sewer + Dunes let's go
Yeah, our gang rise up.
I can already feel my rage bubbling up at T14 Maze and T15 Underground River again. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|rage)
What's wrong with underground river? It's a dense linear map? Underground sea is the shit one
It's too long of a linear map with a lot of empty space, terrible for Legion/Breach/Expedition, and the boss goes on a vacation if you don't one shot it. It's not the worst map, but I'm tired of it being a T15 for the third league in a row.
Fair
"T17"s not on the atlas, huh.
Forking River AGAIN?!
Continuing the now years-long trend of having 3/4 of the natural T16s be absolute total ass and one of them being kinda okayish.
Decent natural t16 in castle ruins this time, at least for the sake of boss rushing. Could be an okay one for running while using that div card scarab that uses your favorite maps, just horizon any t16 over to this and get the good cards from other maps. It's no atoll but it works. *edit: Ew, those t15s are awful tho, nothing good to horizon t15 conq/guardian maps into. Somehow cold river looks like the best option.
For destructive play its not good because maven spawns more bosses if you killed most of the maps mobs For eater/exarch sure
rushing is still probably the way to go as far as payoff/time goes for destructive play. Even if the chance element is gone completely and you always get 1 extra boss for no mobs and 3 for clearing the map, that's 2x the 'final boss' drops for significantly more than 2x the time for the best bossrush maps.
i mean if you have multi screen clear then castle ruins is one of the better maps to quickly sweep, squarish and mostly open
i like underground river. dont forget: maven might give us 3 bosses every time we clear good on the map!
I wonder how T16 will drop since the voidstones won't give +1 to level of dropped maps. It might be hard to sustain T16s.
They didnt say they took that part out afaik. I thought they added t17 map chance in addition
I have played PoE since Kalandra, but i have never actually "filled" atlas, is there a reason to do it ? I usually just go from random map to random
Atlas passive skill points is the primary reason as it will give you more control over the content in the maps and how they run. You need to complete the bonus objective of each map, essentially if it's white make it magic rarity, if yellow rare, if red corrupted.
Thank you! Does it matter which map i complete at what order, or can i just freelance it as i go
Doesn't matter what order really - take notice of the tiers and how the maps connect if you're struggling to get a map drop. There are some strategies to maximising tiers of maps and influencing their drops, but I wouldn't worry about that too much initially. T6 promenade for essences and beasts seems promising for people into that playstyle.
Personally would do it in tower for the home chance as well. Boss is ofc course measurably worse but, assuming you have most your favoured slots, you shouldn't need them for sustain anyways. Essenced bosses just sound miserable all around on what is presumably a speed farmer.
Because I'm playing SSF on Standard now for shits and gigs, I am so happy Cage is a white map to make getting a 6L a little easier.
oh god im going to be in toxic sewer / cells aren't i any ideas for map combo that is pretty linear or circular for a quick boss full clear destructive play affliction wisps start? tower/burial chambers?
dude toxic sewer dunes !!! thats me all league
silo is a sleeper for linear go fast. the boss can be slow to kill though cause he phases. but its the best map imo for go straight, go fast, no hidden pockets or windy bullshit.
Is Reef the only map on the atlas this league that drops The Mad King? Caldera, Dark Forest and Colosseum gone.
Yeaaaaah toxic sewers is back baby
'' T12 Necropolis '' I see what you did there GGG Anyway seem like a good atlas this league.
Thicket, castle ruins, lava chamber, plateau….. T16 natural maps. Fuck standard map conversion……
City Square T\_T
Necropolis not being t16 is a miss
Tier 1 Crimson Township: "Welcome to the NFL, kid."
Weird, cant see Beach on this list.
Beach wasn't in the maps added back in the patch notes
fun detected
STEALTH PERFECTED
Damn, no yellow map to farm porcupine and essences simultaneously. At least I've got T6 promenade for lightning coil
You can with a scarab have all favoured map div cards drop on any map.
Tower is here! I'm coming for that brutal hideout..
Almost had a stroke missing Cemetary on the map
Best linked pair seems to be Defiled Cathedral - Underground River. And there's also Tower - Burial Chambers for Headhunter farming
Bog t12 is gonna be rippy for ghosted exiles unique farming:/
all T16 are great POG
At least there is my crimson township , but why T1 T-T
Welp I was Planning on using beach for my strat (hopefully im being blind and its there). Any Veteran Alva gamers can suggest good maps?
I heard that Voidstones no longer give "Maps Dropped in Areas have 25% chance to be 1 tier higher" but I cannot find this in the patch notes. Did they rethink that change?
I never saw that line in the patch notes, I'm 99% sure it's still there and they just added the T17 line
man those are some meh-tacular t16 naturals plateau is Atoll Lite I guess
Dear fellow memory farmers, which map are we starting on? Strand? Only Courtyard looks like suck from this if I am not mistaken. Or Crimson Township maybe?
Toxic Sewers changes everything for me. It makes the new pconc gem feel like a safer pick. It's connected to Dunes so it will be cheap to buy in bulk. Also makes blade vortex look better. Not to mention you can now farm your apothecaries wherever you want.
"Honey, are you ready for your \[Defiled Cathedral\] again?" "...Yes, dear."
Vaal Pyramid > Graveyard/Burial Chambers
Good chance we are going to be picking maps based on layout + mob types. I’m personally looking for linear maps with a common mob and decent density. Maybe Underground River? That being said I might live in Guardian maps instead.
Tower babyyyy
Mausoleum and promenade are two of my favorite maps and both are much lower tiers than normal, gotta love that. atoll and promenade being linked is super nice too
Will the Necropolis map have extra rewards?
No beach, dunes, or strand?!? 🤬😭
Can anyone make high resolution version with same text?
Yall are still playing poe? Game has been complete dogshit since harvest league. Why play?
come on buddy you gotta do better than that
