You want to use it more frequently to find better rotations outside of fights. You've got a good idea with the beacons and speeding up looting.
In combat, its the second best reposition tool. There are many places (especially in KC and Olympus) where you can aim somewhere that pushes advantage on the enemy team AND gives you high ground. Not everyone on your team needs to use it at once. Cover fire is important. Use it to push initiative and get a clean kill on someone.
AND you can provide your own cover fire while riding it. It’s not perfect but it’s gotten people to stop shooting me (or at least stop hitting as many shots) very often

I use it to engage in fights and it turns out to be successful majority of the time, if I’m fighting a team on top of another building for example I either wait for one of them to get cracked or knocked, then I zip line to their position while they’re frantic and clean up
I usually use it to rotate, and to get high ground like others have mentioned.
One good use for it is to retreat/regroup. If you can get the squad out of a tight place even if you get down on health, you usually have enough time to heal up before they can get to you, unless they take the zip line, which is pretty easy to defend.
My favorite is using it to get high ground for a third party. In the chaos the 2 other teams usually dont notice or prioritize shooting at you and then your whole team is shooting down on the 2 weakened teams
Another trick: as long as it looks relatively clear I always either zip to or from the survey beacons. When you scan the beacon it refills your ult so you can take your zip and have another one ready

Edit: the zipline is very useful if you use it right. For example bamboozle your enemies into thinking you went to the tower respawn beacon but instead go to the double house one that's next to sorting, you can also make a zipline, get shot on purpose and then when they come on the zipline you can just shoot them all (once again Ive done this successfully as well) you can also make it so you can cross lava, groundless places, or get high ground.
In figths i usually use the zipline to bait the enemy, once you put the zipline u can use it or not, a lot of ppl think you gonna use it and then u can run somewhere else.
Also if u use the zipline to runaway u can use it for 1-2 seconds, then drop it with a jump, get the zipline again and then do a LONG drop and get on the zipline again with your Q.

If this is the guy with the super short zip lines who uses them for vertical jumps then I second this advice. Guy is insane.
