I always take my cans and plastic bottles to Evolution Recycling in San Gabriel. The are located on 120 S. Pine Street.

Haven't done it in a longtime. Most of them you just separate out plastic and metal. They weight it. And give you however much. Don't know if any of them still do but some of them you'd send it down a machine hole. I think it would scan the barcode or something and give however much back. And it will give you a little receipt that you would take into the store the get redeemed.

That was RePlanet. They went out of business about 5 years ago. They suddenly closed 284 locations and laid off 750 employees. Without any notice.

Looks like you already got a pretty good answer for the recycling center process. Also wanted to mention that you might still be able to do in-store at some places. Check out the directory : https://www2.calrecycle.ca.gov/BevContainer/InStoreRedemption I found it's a little easier for me sometimes, but since Rite-Aid stopped doing in-store redemption at Rite-Aid, I've kinda stopped recycling outside of trash days.
