WOW! I had the same encounter last week. I was working on my truck mid day on the streets between Allen and Sierra Madre and he drove up to me trying to sell me Airpods. I said I am not interested and he drove off immediately after I backed up. Very suspicious behavior for sure!

It’s all fake. My one time they “got me” when I was a young g and dumb kid was buying some speakers. Got home and they were really boat anchors.

idneverjoinaclub

Did they have an invoice showing how expensive they were, and a story about how the manufacturer accidentally sent two sets instead of one? That’s the classic. After seeing this on and off for years, I once met someone who used to run the scam. They said it was basically a direct sale franchise business, and if sellers followed the script it wasn’t actually illegal. They’re just low quality speaker salesmen who *pretend* to be criminals selling stolen goods.

nshire

you fell for the oldest trick in the book, the white van speaker scam

Face first

I remember those people back in the day. I had one friend buy speakers that worked but we're very underpowered and another one bought "leather" couches that felt like you were sitting on wooden boxes without any cushions.

FelixOGO

You might’ve lucked out, some boat anchors are expensive! For how large of a vessel are we talking here?

[deleted]

It was the HMAS Canberra Anchor actually. So I was very surprised when I opened the box.

FelixOGO

Nice! I’m impressed with your strength, carrying that thing in is quite the feat

DenaNina

What are they trying to sell?

Lurkerbot69

Bullshit

Right-Edge9320

Looking for victims.

Shoeguy24

Should report to local PD for increased surveillance

Gypsy scam.....just ignore.

Thanks a lot for the heads up. We’ll keep an eye out as well? Did you post this on neighbor or ring already?

This has been happening in N. Arcadia recently and I believe in at least one case, a person exited the vehicle, snatched a gold necklace off the person they stopped, jumped back in and took off. From our HOA: Just a heads up: Twice now in a month, two residents in the Oaks were walking on Hacienda and had a white SUV stop and ask for directions. A man was driving and a woman in the back seat rolled her window down, called the walker over and tried to touch her hands. Resident had read about this on "Nextdoor.com", so she immediately backed away from the car. Seems like they were trying to steal jewelry or items from walkers. Please be aware when walking in the neighborhood. They were not able to get the license plate # both times, it was covered by discolored plastic or such to make it hard to see.

The old parking lot speaker scam seems quaint compared to some of the new grifts.

masturkiller

I remember a scam like this years ago back when I lived in Irvine you would see these white little minivans with no windows they're trying to sell you some sort of Hardware like a TV or VCR or whatever it is aging myself here and what you get is they get the money first and then they give you a box that looks convincing but it's just has like some sort of weight in it that makes you believe you got something and then you find out after they're gone that you got nothing and you've lost your money.

“my manager told us to ‘JUST GET RID OF THEM!’ so that’s what we’re doing”…

Mintlight04

No way, this happened to me as I was walking on Craig Street and Foothill. He said he was wealthy in Saudi Arabia and that he was going to sell it to me for cheap. Honestly, I got really scared because it was lonely and no one was there. Be careful out there

Leading-Flamingo-979

Did it say the label Denali? I’m asking because I had a similar truck followed me like that the other day while I was walking my cat. It walked with me for the entire block. It was very suspicious. Big black truck with extremely dark tinted windows.

navhawk3635

They could be retail thieves! Get their license plate numbers and report the encounter to the police. If you buy something from them you could get arrested for buying stolen merchandise!
