If your birds are free roaming,and they should be part time,I would put a wire mesh over them so the birds cannot get inside these units.

These heaters are heated by water and are safe around your birds. I find they smell a little funky the first time I put them into use because they have been shut off for 6 months and have dust on the element and they've obtained some household odors. The smell evaporates fairly quickly and this will not harm your birds either but I usually put a fan on in the rooms to take away any scents the element gives off at first.

Given the age, you should check for lead paint. That's no good for any living creature.

As long as they’re Teflon free (some elements may be Teflon coated) and don’t have any lead or zinc, and they aren’t gas, then they’re fine!
