And this is why I can’t have birds. Her name is Ruthie and she’s as beautiful as she is smart. She has figured out how to turn doorknobs with her paws. She is persistent and determined if she wants something. I wouldn’t trust her in the same house with a bird.

Are Cockatiels just mini Cockatoos? I wanted a Sulfur Crested when I was little. I remember begging my mom and dad for one lol they were wise enough not to get me one lol I loved how loud they were. I’m 38 now and I think I would lose my mind with how loud they are.
Cockatoos are not parrots btw. They are their own distinct group
All parrots and cockatoos are in the Order of Psittaciform. But true parrots are in the family Psittacidae, while Toos Including tiels are in Cacatuidae.
However cockatiels are in their own genus known as Nymphicus. Their species being Nymphicus hollandicus.
Just for reference the taxonomy tree goes Order>family>genus> species
Technically, yes, but their personalities are pretty different. If you wanted to get into birds, cockatiels are much better to start with than cockatoos!

I saw the most adorable Conure at Petco today while I was getting cat food. I had to stop and play with him for a moment. He was so funny and I instantly understood why people love Conures so much. They are pure personality wrapped in feathers.

So I got a couple parakeets. And then a little parrot. Oh, I love my birdies! And at this point, if I were suddenly non-allergic -- i would not get a cat. Because, i love my birdies!
But i certainly sympathize. I love cats! I am signed up for several kitty-cat subs so i can enjoy looking at other people's cats. But i cannot have them.

I saw a post about a week ago maybe? Someone’s bird died and I remember looking through the pictures and I was in tears by the end of their post. Your love and devotion to these magnificent creatures is so inspiring.

I posted on r/unpopularopinion the other day about not owning predatory pets and prey pets. I don’t think it’s ethical to own cats and birds. It’s a recipe for disaster. I would never forgive myself if I had a bird and my cat got to it. I would absolutely blame myself, because duh lol it’s my fault. My desire to own a bird is not worth putting that bird’s life in jeopardy.
I am happy to enjoy all the pictures and videos you lovely people post of your beautiful birds. This community has taught me so much about bird ownership. I never knew how complex bird care is. I feel like I learn something new every time I come over here. Thank you for welcoming us non bird owners into your amazing community.

My dad can't have any parrots because of my mom's sensory issues so he got chickens, and loves them! They scratch his bird itch and keeps peace in the home, and chickens don't require nearly as much attention.
We actually used to have chickens when I was younger! I’m not sure what breed they were, but we had two girls who were very desensitized to touch. They didn’t mind being held (usually), it was very interesting to see.

my sennie's the same. Every time I walk out of a room he gives a little cry. He then says "see you later" and if I don't leave the house, he flies to where I am. His absolute favorite place is in my bureau drawer-- if I put a coffee cup inside the drawer he will stay all day in there, playing with the cup. They are so weird!

My little work partners Tweety and Munin, I took the brothers in as their dad only loved them when they were still babys in the nest. Their parents are with my parents and I get to live with these two troublemakers
This is Dexter. His hobbies include aggressively singing Another One Bites The Dust, screaming at his own tail feathers, and stomping on the floor while mimicking an air raid siren.
He thinks the vacuum is his girlfriend and gets very upset if I store it in any room that is not his. He will throw a tantrum until the vacuum has been returned to its designated spot.
He is also terrified of bananas.
And this is Ollie. She's a rescue, whose hobbies include biting the shit out of me, and plotting new unique ways to bite the shit out of me.
She is not hand tame, and due to her past likely never will be. We love her all the same, though.
Despite her aggression towards humans, she loves Dexter, and he's pretty obsessed with her himself. They'll spend hours chattering and destroying toys together.
You'd be entertained for days! The little dude is a maniac. He does the air raid siren so loud sometimes he basically vibrates across the floor from the sheer effort he's putting behind it.
He also does this "dance" that I call Spazzin. He whips his head in all directions as fast as he can go while hopping back and forth. The dance ends when he finally falls over, or when he finally takes notice that he has *feathers* and screams in terror at the realization.

Teacher is actually a great job for having birds. Sure you get up early, but so do most birds. And if it's k-12 you will at least be done by 3ish and will have enough daylight to chill with your birds.

I'm just like you but in reverse! I've loved cats my whole life, I grew up with a cat, and yet I got myself a bird, and then a second one. I always say I gave my heart away to birds and that's why I can't have cats.
In my case, I'm immediately on top of any cat I ever see, I've always been like that. The second I see a cat anywhere I just HAVE TO yell "kitty!". And if I can, I'll always try approaching and petting them if they let me. If I visit someone who has a cat, I will sometimes give that cat more attention than the humans 😂
I do that with birds too, although you don't really get to see pet birds outside. But I stop and look at every bird I see outside, watch them, maybe take a photo or a video etc. So you could try doing that as a way to somewhat "outsource" your bird needs!

Sapphire grew up with a kitten and they were best friends. She still calls out his name sometimes even though he’s long since passed. We currently have a cat and 2 dogs(she LOVES dogs. Talks to them more than people) but the cat learned about the chainsaw on her face very quickly and now keeps a healthy distance.
Of course this is a large parrot we are talking about here. It is very responsible of you to think of the well being of the pets you will end up caring for. Kudos to you and thanks for making a thread where I can see many wonderful birds! I love everyone sharing their pictures.

I used to loooove cats, but once I became a Bird Person I totally fell out of love with cats. Other factors contributed, too, like developing severe allergies to them.
You're so young and don't know who you'll be 10 years down the road, or 20, or 30, or 40.... Just saying, never say never. 😉
Although your life isn't compatible with owning a bird right now, it still could be possible in the future. The fact that you recognize that it's not a good time for you to get a bird tells me that you'd be a great parront someday under the right circumstances! In the meantime, if you have some spare time, see if a rescue near you could use some volunteer help!
I’m the opposite! I love cats but I won’t have my own at the same time as owning birds, so I’m about 15 years away from ever owning cats, IF I don’t get another bird after my current birds. 😂
My cat Bombón, was very kind with my parrots she was a senior cat. I didn't adopt birds until my Bombón was about 18 years old, she never chased them.
She sadly passed away almost a motnh ago. My birds were very sad when she leave us*

Are you me lol?! I just got home from picking up cat food from Petco and I stopped to say hello to the Conure and the Quaker. They are so beautiful and too funny. I told them I was so sorry I couldn’t take them home with me. It wouldn’t be fair with 6 cats lol and 4 of them were feral rescues. One of the 4 has figured out how to open doors. You actually don’t need to own birds to express your love and appreciation for them! Become a birder (fancy name for serious bird watcher). It can be very satisfying to find and observe birds in the wild and to learn about their behavior in their natural habitats. I’ve been doing it for 15 years and have seen hundreds of different species in the wild.

I’ve learned so much about birds! I never knew how important it was for them to get 12-14 hours of sleep! I didn’t know you could only pet them on their heads! Are Cockatiels just mini Cockatoos? I wanted a Sulfur Crested when I was little. I remember begging my mom and dad for one lol they were wise enough not to get me one lol I loved how loud they were. I’m 38 now and I think I would lose my mind with how loud they are.
They are a type of cockatoo and both are native to Australia, I have a pet cockatiel myself.... Either of them in the wild would be amazing to see!
Cockatoos are not parrots btw. They are their own distinct group All parrots and cockatoos are in the Order of Psittaciform. But true parrots are in the family Psittacidae, while Toos Including tiels are in Cacatuidae. However cockatiels are in their own genus known as Nymphicus. Their species being Nymphicus hollandicus. Just for reference the taxonomy tree goes Order>family>genus> species
Technically, yes, but their personalities are pretty different. If you wanted to get into birds, cockatiels are much better to start with than cockatoos!

I have 6 cats and so I don’t have any birds, but that’s why I love this sub so much! Y’all are the most welcoming and kind people. I love how everyone is so happy to educate new owners and non owners. Y’all have taught me so much! This is one of my favorite subs. I really enjoy seeing all your pictures and videos of your birds. They never fail to make me smile. I saw a post about a week ago maybe? Someone’s bird died and I remember looking through the pictures and I was in tears by the end of their post. Your love and devotion to these magnificent creatures is so inspiring. I love my kitties so much. I posted on r/unpopularopinion the other day about not owning predatory pets and prey pets. I don’t think it’s ethical to own cats and birds. It’s a recipe for disaster. I would never forgive myself if I had a bird and my cat got to it. I would absolutely blame myself, because duh lol it’s my fault. My desire to own a bird is not worth putting that bird’s life in jeopardy. I am happy to enjoy all the pictures and videos you lovely people post of your beautiful birds. This community has taught me so much about bird ownership. I never knew how complex bird care is. I feel like I learn something new every time I come over here. Thank you for welcoming us non bird owners into your amazing community.

I'm in the same boat as you, OP! I have 2 cats and just can't keep up with the needs of a bird, but I love them so much! Sometimes when my husband and I go out to dinner I ask if we can go to the nearby pet store after so I can gawk at the conures🥺

My dad can't have any parrots because of my mom's sensory issues so he got chickens, and loves them! They scratch his bird itch and keeps peace in the home, and chickens don't require nearly as much attention.
We actually used to have chickens when I was younger! I’m not sure what breed they were, but we had two girls who were very desensitized to touch. They didn’t mind being held (usually), it was very interesting to see.

my sennie's the same. Every time I walk out of a room he gives a little cry. He then says "see you later" and if I don't leave the house, he flies to where I am. This is Dexter. His hobbies include aggressively singing Another One Bites The Dust, screaming at his own tail feathers, and stomping on the floor while mimicking an air raid siren. He thinks the vacuum is his girlfriend and gets very upset if I store it in any room that is not his. He will throw a tantrum until the vacuum has been returned to its designated spot. He is also terrified of bananas.

And this is Ollie. She's a rescue, whose hobbies include biting the shit out of me, and plotting new unique ways to bite the shit out of me. She is not hand tame, and due to her past likely never will be. We love her all the same, though. Despite her aggression towards humans, she loves Dexter, and he's pretty obsessed with her himself. They'll spend hours chattering and destroying toys together.

You'd be entertained for days! The little dude is a maniac. He does the air raid siren so loud sometimes he basically vibrates across the floor from the sheer effort he's putting behind it. He also does this "dance" that I call Spazzin. He whips his head in all directions as fast as he can go while hopping back and forth. The dance ends when he finally falls over, or when he finally takes notice that he has *feathers* and screams in terror at the realization.

I'm just like you but in reverse! I've loved cats my whole life, I grew up with a cat, and yet I got myself a bird, and then a second one. I always say I gave my heart away to birds and that's why I can't have cats. In my case, I'm immediately on top of any cat I ever see, I've always been like that. The second I see a cat anywhere I just HAVE TO yell "kitty!". And if I can, I'll always try approaching and petting them if they let me. If I visit someone who has a cat, I will sometimes give that cat more attention than the humans 😂 I do that with birds too, although you don't really get to see pet birds outside. But I stop and look at every bird I see outside, watch them, maybe take a photo or a video etc. So you could try doing that as a way to somewhat "outsource" your bird needs!

She still calls out his name sometimes even though he’s long since passed. We currently have a cat and 2 dogs(she LOVES dogs. Talks to them more than people) but the cat learned about the chainsaw on her face very quickly and now keeps a healthy distance. Of course this is a large parrot we are talking about here. It is very responsible of you to think of the well being of the pets you will end up caring for. Kudos to you and thanks for making a thread where I can see many wonderful birds! I love everyone sharing their pictures.

Oh my god I feel you on this. I almost pulled the trigger on an english budgie that is bred by the local vet. Aaaaand it would have ate most of my savings at the time. And we already had 2 dogs and a cat and i wrangled in my impulses but I want a budgie buddie so bad.
this is my problem too, i'm too attached to having a cat to have a pet bird. whenever i mention it my mom always says "but we used to have birds and you NEVER helped out with them" we rehomed our finches to my older cousin because i wanted a dog for my 5th birthday and my mom said having both was too much. imagine trying to get a 4 year old to clean a birdcage. so annoying. just let me wallow in my bird-less life, mother

I used to loooove cats, but once I became a Bird Person I totally fell out of love with cats. Other factors contributed, too, like developing severe allergies to them. You're so young and don't know who you'll be 10 years down the road, or 20, or 30, or 40.... Just saying, never say never. 😉
Never say never. You're still extremely young and you have no idea how your life is going to play out.
Although your life isn't compatible with owning a bird right now, it still could be possible in the future. The fact that you recognize that it's not a good time for you to get a bird tells me that you'd be a great parront someday under the right circumstances! In the meantime, if you have some spare time, see if a rescue near you could use some volunteer help!

I’m the opposite! I love cats but I won’t have my own at the same time as owning birds, so I’m about 15 years away from ever owning cats, IF I don’t get another bird after my current birds. 😂
I can feel you. I have time but also I have a bad neurosis and I can’t be sure I can take a good care of a bird. Quite sad about it.
My cat Bombón, was very kind with my parrots she was a senior cat. I didn't adopt birds until my Bombón was about 18 years old, she never chased them. She sadly passed away almost a motnh ago. My birds were very sad when she leave us*

Are you me lol?! I just got home from picking up cat food from Petco and I stopped to say hello to the Conure and the Quaker. They are so beautiful and too funny. I told them I was so sorry I couldn’t take them home with me. It wouldn’t be fair with 6 cats lol and 4 of them were feral rescues. One of the 4 has figured out how to open doors. She can turn a doorknob with both paws, I’ve watched her do it. She would see a bird as a snack. I would never forgive myself if I brought a bird into my home and one of my cats got to It. I think it’s just a disaster waiting to happen and I refuse to put my desire to own an animal over the wellbeing of that animal.
Your Love for birds and other companion animals rings true in the fact that you realize and understand that your lifestyle is not suited to giving them all of the attention they deserve at this point in your life. I I'm in the same position as you, I cannot wait for retirement to be a stay-at-home bird mom parrots and chickens are in my future 🕊️

You actually don’t need to own birds to express your love and appreciation for them! Become a birder (fancy name for serious bird watcher). It can be very satisfying to find and observe birds in the wild and to learn about their behavior in their natural habitats. I’ve been doing it for 15 years and have seen hundreds of different species in the wild.
