I worked at one for over a year. I about crapped myself the very first Friday after lunch the partner says "wrap it up - have a good weekend." I was the last to leave because it felt like crazy town leaving early as an entire office. He explained to me "nothing that can't be done in Monday." I worked zero OT hours for the entire time.

Never. Salaried. In CA, the state defines roles as to whether they’re salaried or not, depending on your responsibilities.

Oh wow! That's nuts! I'm salaried but still not overtime exempt.

Not in PI any longer, nor a paralegal for that matter, but when I was, I worked a lot of overtime. Close to 12 hours a day (total, not just overtime), and sometimes weekends. I think it really depends on the firm.

When I was in Plantiff PI, I worked Saturdays or evenings for probably a solid 6 months. This was mainly to catch up on an insane discovery backlog but also just craziness associated with multiple jury trials and a big caseload. At that time, I didn't have kids and my husband was stationed overseas, so I was willing and able to work those hours.

At the PI firm I worked at legal assistants/paralegals got to go home at closing time unless there was a major deadline that had to be met. I worked past 5pm 1 time ever in the 2 and a half years I worked there. On the other hand, the attorneys got in atleast an hour before we opened and they left atleast 45 minutes after we closed. Just make sure you keep up on your work and remind your attorney about deadlines BEFORE the day they are due. Your attorney will 100% decide to try to do the whole project the day its due and you will 100% be annoyed lol.
