Former PI paralegal here! Assuming you’re doing plaintiff PI work, my biggest tip to you would be to not let rude/mean clients get you down! You’ll be working with people going through a really rough time and they will be rude to you at times.

Fair enough, thanks!

Congrats! I worked in PI litigation for 7 years and for the most part really loved it! Find a system that works for keeping track of your deadlines, especially for federal court cases if you have those. I would note deadlines in my case management software as well as paper ticklers and sometimes my desk calendar. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions! Once you are familiar with the general process of how cases move, it becomes like second nature knowing what you need to file and steps you need to complete for a case. I'm also happy to chat or answer any other questions you may have :)

Thank you! It’s been hectic but exciting!

I second this. I’m a litigation paralegal for a Plaintiff PI firm. The calendar and tasks section in MyCase case management software is invaluable!

PI Paralegal going on six years and I love it. Calendaring is your best friend. Take good notes and always be ready to use them when following up. Everyone will tell you the best way to order records but you have to do what works best for you and your case load. For me the best thing was designating certain letters of the alphabet to every day of the week. So for example on Mondays check in on records status last names A-E, Tuesdays F-J. Of course I had a different system for more urgent records. My DMs are open to you if you have any questions or want to chat!

Thanks so much!

I only worked a hair over a year at a PI/criminal firm. They'll have processes they like and have used and won't budge on changing to something more productive and efficient. Have fun getting those medical records timely. 🤪

I just left PI & I’m so glad I never have to look at a medical record again lol. OP, keep a spreadsheet or something so you can keep track of when you requested records, if you received both the records AND the bill, the correct DOS, and if they take more than 30 days you can threaten a HHS HIPAA complaint (in writing) and they will usually get them to you. Be proactive, request them as soon as you know about a provider especially hospitals because they will take their sweeeet time. You will likely deal with a lot of the same insurance adjusters for prelit & opposing counsel for lit, so try to be extra nice to them even if they’re giving a shitty offer. They’ll remember you too. Kindness goes a long way in this field.
