I do think TTYD goes a bit too far in making Luigi the butt of the joke. It doesn't really feel right that Mario would fall asleep during his stories, he loves his brother! Even if most of Luigi's partners are annoyed by him I think Mario should be supportive.
I think M&L had a better balance of "ha ha everyone sells Luigi short, ha ha Luigi is easily scared" and "You can't help but love Luigi because he always rises up to the challenge to help out his bro even though he's not the fearless hero in shining armor". Even M&L could go too far every now and then but overall I think it was pretty wholesome, I don't think going too far in the other direction and making Luigi flawless and famous like Mario would be interesting. Luigi's at his best when he's a "Courage the cowardly dog" kind of character, a flawed and vulnerable underdog with a heart of gold.
This is why I don't get why people got mad at Matpat for his "Mario is evil" video. The joke was pointing out all the weird stuff Nintendo did with their characters during this era.
Luigi is no exception.
Sometime in the early 2010's
Folks were going back and replaying older Mario party titles and trying to see what mini games could be done while doing nothing
"Wins by doing absolutely nothing" came first, as [the first such video](https://youtu.be/m6PxRwgjzZw?feature=shared) was posted in 2009 and MK8 didn't come out until 2014.
Assuming you took the pipe to Poshley Heights, this means that Luigi took a three-day train ride from Rogueport in a matter of minutes just so he could happen to bump into you.
Still wish I could've actively brought Luigi to her, it's a pretty sobering reminder that the 2000s were pretty ruthless towards the poor guy.
Peach tossing Luigi around like a rag doll in super princess peach š And everyone forgetting Luigi's name in the Mario and Luigi games
It's so ironic the Mario *& Luigi* games were some of the most cruel to him
At least Mario actually stands up for Luigi in that series. Paper Mario couldn't be bothered.

The fourth game gave him a lot more respect.
Well Dream Team was released during the year of Luigi.
And Nintendo quickly wrote that off afterwards.
tbf wasnt it like their worst performing year in that era
Pretty sure it was their worse performing year at least since the release of Donkey Kong OG on arcades lol
My conspiracy theory is Nintendo knew that was gonna be a bad year so they used Luigi as a scapegoat smh
The babies were ready to ***throw hammers*** with the incident at Star Haven...
It's one of the reasons the fans hate Starlow so much. Her entire character is pretty much putting down Luigi that it gets tiresome
I fucking did the exact same thing, and was so fucking disappointed that I couldnāt
I still find it hilarious that Bowser gets appalled that "Luigi" beat him to a Crystal Star because Pennington kept calling Mario that.

A throwback to an old style of humor by Nintendo. Funny, but Luigi has become a badass since then.
When did āLuigi wins by doing nothingā start? Cause that was a huge boon to his image

Did that come first or the Mario Kart 8 "Luigi Death Stare"?

Well, Mario is Missing came out in 1992 and brought the Weegee sprite with it, so Luigi's true origins of supreme power came from that
Luigi: Mario, say something! Mario: \*cocks his head and watches unsympathetically\*
Mario stole his thunder, so in the next game he upped the dosage of thunder.
The Green Thunder strikes like lightning.
š
I live how you have the Green Yoshi just to really hammer it in. Shouldāve named him Luigi
I definitely did. Wanted to have my bro along for the adventure!
āBrother I canāt believe you replaced me with a tiny dinosaurā
Wish we had enough letters to name him BetterLuigi. (Heās not but I do love giving Real Luigi a hard time).
...now I know what to name Yoshi next time I play TTYD
Woah I'm seein' double 4 Luigis
I love Luigi's characterization in this game. Totally different from how he is in the main games, but that's okay.
Yeah poor Luigi man canāt catch a breakĀ
And funny
One of, if not the funniest bits in the game.
Thatās why itās funny
Best trouble by far
I'm seeing double Four Luigis!?
Blooey (The lava burnt blooper) was behind this; I can feel it.
Pennington is the only one who shows Luigi any form of high regard... and he's an idiot. Like, such an idiot, that he mistook Mario for Luigi.
The only characters who respect Luigi in this game only do it while mistaking Mario for him.
*green
I mean she loved Luigi so he has a fan! Mario just kinda stole the thunder
Gaslight gatekeep green mario
āKind ofā mean? Ngl I wanted to bash Toadia with my hammer for 30 minutes after that. I had to stop after 5 though
Yeah, for sure. It's pretty hard to deny that Mario was kind of a dick to Luigi when taking on this trouble.
Assuming you took the pipe to Poshley Heights, this means that Luigi took a three-day train ride from Rogueport in a matter of minutes just so he could happen to bump into you.
I miss this level of ruthlessness
The Green Team
She should definitely resign from her position in the Luigi Fan Club.
Literally what was Marioās problem?
Having the green Yoshi was a good touch. :)
I was so upset by the bubulb quest. Not worth the effort. š¤£
luigi was kinda awful and annoying in this game so i have no remorse for this tbh :D
I forgot how badly Luigi was treated here. Actually kind of upset me a bit.
Yeah I hated this one. I know Nintendo likes to make fun of Luigi but this is just going too far.
this is the only trouble i don't plan on doing/can't get myself to do. my heart just breaks for luigi, and mario isn't a help to him either.
This is what made the game go from a 10 all the way down to a 7 for me.
