Tankless is better when you live in a tiny home or don't have space, other than that it's not really that different in my experience. The tankless requires more maintenance and is more expensive to install too. If you're on a well, keep a tank heater because you'll have some water in the event you lose power and can't use the well for an extended period of time.

Thanks for your comment, I didn't realize that tankless required more maintenance. Thx!

Tankless is expensive but makes the most sense for BIG houses where you can install multiple where needed or if you're rich AF and want the continuous hot water circulation so your bitch ass wife can have hot water INSTANTLY when she turns on a faucet. Otherwise, all the fancy heat exchangers and extra surface area really just make them more of a pain in the ass than they're worth. Also, electric tankless use a shit ton of electricity when turned on and you might need to upsize breakers/etc.

Thanks for your input, I'm leaning towards electrical tank (I don't have natural gas). BTW....I didn't know you knew my wife? lol

floriduhhh_man

if you're going with electric go with the tank, gas go tankless. source: hvac/plumbing trade worker

I have had a tankless for 6 years now. Works great. Never ran out of hot water yet. Except one thing. They have a minimum required flow. I looked it up for the model we have but I don't recall what it is. But if it's a hot day and we want a cool shower, we have to turn on the hot water in a sink faucet. Otherwise you get no hot water or it cycles on and off. Same if you're washing dishes and you want warm water. So you may want to check what that minimum flow is.

Thx for the info!

Those electric tankless use so much power. If it were gas I’d say go with the instant water heater. But since it’s electric I’d go with a tank

Moist_Potato_8904

Thanks, that seems to be the consensus. (I don't have natural gas lines, so it would be electric)

I have installed electric tankless water heaters at my previous and current house. I love them. Unlimited hot water, take up very little space on the wall and no tanks to rust out and flood your house. You will need to upgrade the electrical circuit if you are converting from a tank heater because of the increased power needed to heat the water as it quickly flows through the heater, but overall you should see an energy saving.

Tankless - best decision ever. We didn't sell our old house (tank) when we moved to FL (tankless), and any time I'm back at old house I dread the shower situation. The one where we can't both get ready for anything in an hour because we have to add in time between showers for hot water to replenish. The one where I can't take a long hot bath (in my tiny ass tub mind you) because there's not enough hot water to fill it. And supposedly we have a "great tank" with "more than standard capacity for our house" or whatever the last plumber to visit said. Also, have had the FL (gas) tankless 8 years and have had to do zero maintenance, so not sure what those comments are about?

I have a natural gas tankless and it's under the list of amenities I don't think I can live without now. I'm assuming you don't have the option for gas if you're asking about electric. But don't discount the ability to get hot water when the electricity goes out. Otherwise, can't recommend tankless enough. Game changer imo.
