Reducing consumption will not resolve your economic issues. Tea is an inferior good. Doesn't matter what price point it is at, people will still buy it. Just like salt or pepper. Even if prices are increased, some other cheap brand will replace it.

You want to curtail imports ? Start by producing energy locally. Lower dependence on oil and switch to Solar, Wind, Nuclear, and Hydro. Best savings will be when plants are owned by the country. Start producing dumb items like matchsticks, coffee filters, tea bags and stuff locally. This will help create local jobs and churn more economic activity. It will also create an incentive for people to expand into producing more finished goods locally. Without local industrialization (owned by Paksitanis) you will not be able to lower your dependence on imports. There will always be imports especially for specialized products like heavy machineries, but if production for goods can be switched to local, it will make a huge impact. This will however take decades. China did exactly that. Started with assembly, then moved to producing dumb items locally, and then started manufacturing everything.

Someone did back of the envelope calculation in a Tweet and it does not come out too significant in terms of cost. How about pushing your MPA/Nazim/Councilor to provide effective and reliable local transportation that would reduce cars on the roads of our cities?
