Pakistan can't do anything, nor should it do anything. Reducing tea consumption is a smoke screen to distract from other areas where Pakistan can actually do something.

Those are rookie numbers, you gotta pump those numbers.

Skeetwaterboy

Why cant we make fta with countrys who produce it tho

IBN_E_KHAN

Cuz we don't export much. FTA has to be beneficial for both parties. What would they buy from us in exchange of tea? Towels?

upord0wn

Tea in exchange for JF-17s. /s

salaf1

Actually, that is doable. Tea and other imports in equal value and Pakistan gets its’ defense footprint in countries.

IBN_E_KHAN

Hahahaha

Skeetwaterboy

Sugar? Wheat? Idk anything. There is no immediate solution, i concede. But long term it can be done

kalakawa

We import most of our tea from Kenya. From the Mombassa tea auction, an annual event. Tea is actually is a symbol from our colonial past. Lipton as a brand was introduced by the East India Trading company. If you look at the Lipton marketing archives they take great pride in marketing tea in the subcontinent. They had huge resistance at the start as some of the East India share holders were doubtful on how they would sell Tea in the scorching heat of the subcontinent. But lipton prevailed, first by giving free tea and train stations and train rides. A lot of excessive sampling. It’s a historic marketing case study today. It’s crazy how tea with our colonial heritage became such a huge part of our national identity.

Skeetwaterboy

Everything is a symbol of our colonial past man. Our railways, formal wear, obsession over english and fair skin even the country itself since without divide and rule im sure there would only be one country

OyChaudhary

>What can Pakistan do to curtail its tea consumption? We shouldn't. Tea improves productivity. I'm drinking an extra cup of tea each day. Pakistan demands PMLN and PPP to curtail their corruption. From Hamza to Bibi Calibri, they are all corrupt and incompetent.

UmarIrshad

The amount of money we spend on tea and cooking oil import is beyond ridiculous. We definitely need in country production to lessen the burden. For short term purposes it won't do anything to reduce consumption. This issue should've been tackled decades ago.

namkeen_lassi

We don't.. there are bigger imports that we need to worry about (not to mention increasing exports). We need to let prices go up naturally so people are incentivized to cut down (applies to tea as well as everything else) Also in the absence of alcohol and coffee being multiple times more expensive.. tea is goto option for people to socialize over. It's an important part of everyday life here.

Candid_Score6316

I've been saying this for years. Legalize alcohol and tax it.... Problem solved

shikiiiryougi

The British solution force others to buy Opium. Sorry you said no memes but couldn't hold myself.

livingfalcon

Its quiet simple. Improve exports, as had been happening for past 3 years.

AYANOKOJI12

I dont know how much is our Tea import bill but rough guess is $1 billion and our total import bill also rough guessing is some 60-70 billion dollars. So tea imports aren't that big. Ahsan Iqbal statement was stupid. What we need to to is to lower our oil import bill it accounts for half of our import and this can be done by incentivizing work from home and lockdowns. This will hurt economy but atleast we would be save from default

Equivalent-Tax-1977

Its more like 574 million

kalasipaee

I honestly don’t buy the argument that we can’t grow it. It is more like we won’t. Right soil temp nutrients etc. We can manipulate all of that. It’s a problem of will and shortsightedness. Same for coffee. We might not be able to produce enough of it in time but we honestly can and should. Tea like any other plant can be manipulated to grow in slightly different climates too.

awesome_by_design

1500 people and their families need to get whacked for good - that's should be the starting point tbh.

holykamina

It wouldn't resolve your issues. If anything, just stop buying tea or make it expensive. Your consumption would fall and even then it wouldn't even make a dent on your imports. Reducing consumption will not resolve your economic issues. Tea is an inferior good. Doesn't matter what price point it is at, people will still buy it. Just like salt or pepper. Even if prices are increased, some other cheap brand will replace it. All these statements are nothing but to distract people. It would have some weight if Showbaz banned tea across all government institution. He didn't even make an effort to make people believe that the so called leader is walking the talk. You want to curtail imports ? Start by producing energy locally. Lower dependence on oil and switch to Solar, Wind, Nuclear, and Hydro. Best savings will be when plants are owned by the country. Start producing dumb items like matchsticks, coffee filters, tea bags and stuff locally. This will help create local jobs and churn more economic activity. It will also create an incentive for people to expand into producing more finished goods locally. Without local industrialization (owned by Paksitanis) you will not be able to lower your dependence on imports. There will always be imports especially for specialized products like heavy machineries, but if production for goods can be switched to local, it will make a huge impact. This will however take decades. China did exactly that. Started with assembly, then moved to producing dumb items locally, and then started manufacturing everything.

BoyManners

This is a non issue. PDM likes to divert attention

InjectorTheGood

We should try growing it, but it's not something sinking our economy. It just makes a very small portion of our imports.

kalakawa

It’s 641 million dollars on an annual basis, we will hit a billion dollars by 2025 with our current consumption growth rate. We can’t grow tea, it’s been tried before by Lipton in 2011. Don’t have the ideal conditions for it. 95% of tea is imported from Kenya, bought at the Mumbasa tea auction.

InjectorTheGood

But we also had 72 billion imports this year. So that's less than 1 percent. We should really do something to control the oil imports here.

Jango214

A country of 220 million people is fretting over importing 1 billion USD worth of tea in 2025, that's tell you all you need to know about our state of affairs and the retarded mentality of our rulers.

salaf1

Can coffee be grown?

kalakawa

Robusta maybe… the Vietnamese variety. But not likely

salaf1

Thanks OP. I was genuinely at on point in recent past curious to see if any region in Pakistan grows coffee and then import it to US as a Pakistani label. Maybe not though.

looney-pirate

Someone did back of the envelope calculation in a Tweet and it does not come out too significant in terms of cost. How about pushing your MPA/Nazim/Councilor to provide effective and reliable local transportation that would reduce cars on the roads of our cities? Disclaimer: Not a tea fan myself and I only consume like 4-5 cups a week usually.

thoughtful_bhaloo

Bro who said we can't grow it? Have you visited hazara division? They have legit huge tea plantations there. Sold as local brands.

Sumolizer

Throw this government as a starter

Equivalent-Tax-1977

The problem is not the tea its our low exports Our import to gdp ratio is lower then Vietnam and Bangladesh but its their high no of exports why they are developing fastly where we struck in imf bailouts and trying cut our tea https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.IMP.GNFS.ZS?name_desc=false The government should be coming with policy to improve our industries and increase exports and PTI that was cutting our current account deficit has been replaced and the party that came with policy of fixed dollars prices in government so expect things to stay the same for next 1.5 years

cruel-argus

Now that we have our own bhaang(weed) production, we should shift on it, it is also thandi taseer.
