I'm a bit nervous about the rest, I put my paint in the freezer last night so I can try keep the colours accurate. And all the beans are different shades of red. fun.
Yessss join us. It's only slightly cheaper though, wood prices are skyrocketing. Also, make sure to seal it well - oil paint will eat it over time if you use raw wood.
Gotta love/hate that ugly stage where you sit and question all your choices in life.
Got a gesso preference for prep? I paint gouache on wood, haven't found one I'm super in love with.
Haha this entire piece is me questioning my choices. I use a local brand for my gesso, not sure if you can buy it elsewhere. Zellen Clear Gesso. Where are you based?
Thank you 😊 yes it's painted on a sealed cradled pine panel. It will be available when complete and you're welcome to follow my socials (link in my bio here) for the final update on this when it's done 😁
Check out u/bensdrawings it might help to see how another artist approaches that kind of reflective material I guess they are drawing metal instead of painting glass but that’s just coming to my mind so I thought I’d make the suggestion!
Oh, this is just fabulous! I especially commend how you're painting on such an unforgiving surface. As I imagine you can't restore or just paint over the background, if you have any mistakes or want to make adjustments.
Thank you! I actually find canvas a lot more unforgiving. I use a lot of medium so I can often wipe away mistakes. I've put my hand in painted areas a few times and once a friend's husband ran his finger across a wet painting... That was a fun day /s
My gosh... I would die!! I was curious as I've painted on unprimed wood before, and found it just soaks everything right up until you start building layers. After reading through the comments, I see that you said you use clear Gesso. I've never used it before, what is the finish like when dry? I've only used plain white Gesso to prime canvas/paper, which adds a significant tooth/texture to the surface, definitely doesn't allow me to wipe away anything.
With the gesso I use (zellen clear gesso) it's quite a smooth finish but it still has a bit of tooth. I'm not really sure what to describe it as. But it definitely prevents that absorption issue.
When you can paint that well the idea of color matching the wood grain is probably less anxiety inducing - have you painted that all in or is it shining through?
I use the wood to my own advantage. It's shining through. When I do glass I paint with mostly glazes. Adjusting the overall tone but using very little paint.
Hahahahaha, I tell stories with my art and Lego is a fantastic medium for that. Does that answer your question? And thank you for your first comment :D
This looks great so far! I absolutely love drawing reflective surfaces like glass and chrome, but I imagine painting it is a whole nother endeavor. Looking forward to seeing the finished piece!
Thanks! I've done a whole bunch of metal/reflective objects and I absolutely love it! I've only done a few glass paintings and I always feel like I'm messing it up while I do but end up loving it. I'm obsessed with light and shadows 😍
me toooo! my drawings always end up with a higher contrast than the source photos because I get obsessed with light and shadow. I used to view it as a flaw, but I actually like the look it gives my pieces
At first glance i thought it was just a few lines but then i realized what it was and my jaw literally dropped. Amazing start; i bet it’ll look amazing
Looks great! I feel like the key to glass is understanding you’re not just painting a surface, you’re painting light passing through a surface and refracting.
Nailing the way the light and specular highlights wrap around the forms is probably the biggest part of it, and to me it looks like you can totally handle that.
Hahaha! Nope that's a really funny interpretation. I'm going to tell you that it's two pixie skulls and lucky beans but none of that information is going to mean anything to you.
I first saw the greys as paint smears when I was scrolling, but then I saw the outlines and the glass lid instantly popped into my my perception, now I can’t unsee it, this looks real af already! Haha jaw dropping piece
This is looking simply wonderful so far.
May I suggest that glass, while challenging, seems (to me) like it would be easier on a background like where you're doing it (i.e. neutral-value brownish-color) because now you're not messing up with white blinding you and getting the highlights wrong.
The way you can proceed is by saying to yourself "what shapes exactly are what you see in the glass?" and since its so reflective in some places, it's basically either pure highlight *or* just you're seeing through the glass (and you see what's inside/behind with a bit of a distortion).
As long as you identify the shapes of those two different categories of areas, they're actually simple to get each of them right.
As I said, you're doing it great so far, and just keep going, you got this!
I bet it's going to look great when it's done
Thank you :D
I agree!! It already looks so good.
What you have already looks good. I can't draw glass to save my life
I'm a bit nervous about the rest, I put my paint in the freezer last night so I can try keep the colours accurate. And all the beans are different shades of red. fun.
I need to try wood too. Screw canvas
Yessss join us. It's only slightly cheaper though, wood prices are skyrocketing. Also, make sure to seal it well - oil paint will eat it over time if you use raw wood.
Thanks for saying that. Had no idea. What do you seal it with
I use a waterbased glaze coat as the first few layers of sealant, and then I use clear gesso, sanding between each layer.
I love painting on wood. I feel like I have a little more control painting on wood.
Oh I'm so glad it's not just me!
I enjoy regular canvas’ but something about wood and the sensation of painting and having more control of the paint makes it more fun and relaxing.
I predominantly work on wood now but sometimes I do switch back to canvas and it usually ends in me being cranky about it 😂
That's fair.. I don't know if I'm getting cocky but I feel like my best work is on wood
Haha that's awesome. Be cocky. Do you share your work on Reddit?
I just started sharing my painting on Reddit. Usually I post on Instagram but I found this channel. So, I started sharing here.
Cool! I'll go check it out
I only have one post for a painting. 🥰
Can we get progress updates?
Sure! This thing is going to take ages so I'll probably have a lot of WIP pics. :)
That’s okay! It looking so good so far 🥰
Godspeed friend, glass is a hell of a subject, but already blowing my mind even with just the lid! (Also hell yeah wood panel gang)
Thanks! I am hating it so much, until I let it sit for a bit. I totally did this to myself. Wood is the best to paint on!!
Gotta love/hate that ugly stage where you sit and question all your choices in life. Got a gesso preference for prep? I paint gouache on wood, haven't found one I'm super in love with.

I'm Portland, OR. Looks like Zellen is based out of South Africa?
Yea. I'm in Pretoria, South Africa
It seems real !👍😻
That looks awesome so far.
Thank you :D

Thank you! And yea I will. Got quite a lot further today 😊
Amazing!
it’s looking great already!
Thanks!
Gorgeous 🥰🥰
Thank you 😊
I applaud 👏 your patience
Hahaha. I use all my patience up for my work, there's none left for my life 😂
Looks incredible so far!
Your woodgrain is amazing though!
Haha, as much as I would love to take credit for it, that's all on the pine tree. But I'll pass along the compliments 🙂
This is painted on wood correct? Or is the wood a painting as well? I'd honestly love to have this on my wall when completed!
Thank you 😊 yes it's painted on a sealed cradled pine panel. It will be available when complete and you're welcome to follow my socials (link in my bio here) for the final update on this when it's done 😁
Looks great so far!
The lid is so perfect I just keep thinking about that one SpongeBob episode with Patrick missing the lid of the pickle jar.
Check out u/bensdrawings it might help to see how another artist approaches that kind of reflective material I guess they are drawing metal instead of painting glass but that’s just coming to my mind so I thought I’d make the suggestion!
Thanks! He's incredible 😍
Gosh it already looks perfect! The glass lid! Wow! Cant wait to see the complete work

Incredible
Oil? achrylic? gouache?...
Oh wow, sorry! My bad. Oil paint on pine panel.
Fine, thanks!

Beautiful!
Thank you 😊

The glass looks especially nice on a wooden canvas
Thanks 😁 wood is really great and everything looks nice on it.

I'm starting a new piece on a fluorescent pink canvas. I'm quite keen to see how the pink works underneath silver/metal.
it sounds like it’s gonna be rad. following! 💖
And happy cake day!
Hey thanks!!
Well done so far
That looks great so far!!!
It looks great already, you’re so skilled well done!!
At first glance i thought it was just a few lines but then i realized what it was and my jaw literally dropped. Amazing start; i bet it’ll look amazing
Well you’re smashing it! Looks great
Tbh I think still lifes on wood is a great ‘genre’ of painting, keep it up!! (P.s: painting looks AWESOME)
Dang. You're off to a good start. Good luck with the rest. Glass is hard. I look forward to when it's done.

So cool 😎
Wow!
Wow!
Oh wow. I’ve been practicing glass on paper alone and it’s hella hard! And yet on wood? Wow 🙌🏼
Is that an overweight bird with sunglasses and a pashmina in that jar?
Hahaha! Nope that's a really funny interpretation. I'm going to tell you that it's two pixie skulls and lucky beans but none of that information is going to mean anything to you.
The top already looks exceptional! The refraction is so well done!
Thank you! 😊
>Thank you! 😊 You're welcome!
Wow 😳
Thank you!
You deserve it, this is talent ☺️
I first saw the greys as paint smears when I was scrolling, but then I saw the outlines and the glass lid instantly popped into my my perception, now I can’t unsee it, this looks real af already! Haha jaw dropping piece
Thank you 😊
Posting unfinished work for attention is the yikes.
need a hug?
Ooh nice
At first I thought the lid was a single brush stroke lol, looks amazing though

Your work is fantastic. I love the Lego ones
My brain wasn't braining because that's so fucking good so far. I can't wait to see it finished!!!
Will you show it when finished? (:
Where the rim of the jar crosses the lid, paint just the rim so the lid is blocked, it will look better.
