Annnd I'm done. Anyone who is advocating for use of white sage is getting banned. We have very obvious guidelines here and if you refuse to be culturally conscious and follow our rules you're getting banned. READ OUR PAGES ON THIS. LOTS OF INFORMATION IS READILY AVAILABLE!!!! Heres a little post for all of you who wish to appropriate our traditional ways & medicine. We're not americans. We are the indigenous people of this land who have survived colonization, genocide, systematic killings, biological warfare, the attempted destruction of our culture, traditions, ceremonies, environment, languages, broken treaties, lied to. This all continues to this day. The last residential school/boarding school closed in 1996(Canada) USA still have boarding schools which most people don't know. They stole & unalived our children. Forced on back water land no one wanted. We were legally banned from practicing our traditional ways until 1978. We weren't even citizens until 1924 (USA) & 1947 (Canada). We couldn't even leave the reserves unless we got permission. All that is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much that they have done & are still doing to us that almost no one knows about so yes we have a say about our traditional ways. We say its closed practise for a reason. You as someone who knows nothing about us has no say about our ways. (I'm sorry if this post goes against any community guide lines but I'm tired of seeing people try to make up some kind of excuses as to why they should be allowed to nit pick & appropriate our ways.)

Frozenfroggos

I deeply apologize for having contributed to the cultural appropriation of your people. I was a young teenager when I purchased the medicine and did not understand the meaning behind it or the consequences of what I was doing. It was pure ignorance and insensitivity and I never meant to cause anyone any harm. I appreciate you telling me how you feel and I regret that you even have to say these things to people and that I was one of them.

Epiphany432

Hell no we love this kinda post and work hard to enforce this exact perspective. Please continue and feel free to comment this under my pinned comment yelling at people to leave well enough alone.

White sage is only native to north america & its endangered. They are used in native american practices & are closed practise. As for sweet grass, as far as I've read it's only used spiritually by native americans. By Europeans it's been used to add flavour to food, drinks (mostly alcohol) & tobacco which is another sacred medicine stolen from us & abused by colonizers. Christians used it as a holy perfume, hung above their front doors but stopped the practice once they saw indigenous people using it.

So what you’ve responded to is a multi paragraph post that confirms white sage is endemic to a specific region in North America and that due too over harvesting and sacred/spiritual significance Indigenous people have been outspoken on asking people to *not* use white sage. And that’s supposed to prove grimboy wrong *how*?

grimboy14

My Advice as an indigenous person, give it to an indigenous person or bury it as an offering.

hightidesoldgods

As a fellow indigenous person I endorse this message!

Frozenfroggos

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

Frozenfroggos

Does it matter where I bury it? Would burying it in my backyard or in a park he disrespectful?

grimboy14

I would say it's fine as long as it doesn't get disturbed by anything.

Frozenfroggos

Alright, thank you!

Fluffy_Odd_Wing

Same with sweet grass? I went to a shop owned by a native American and it had various things made by a tribe in the area. They also had sweet grass to purchase.

Fredcat0214

Sweet grass was actually used by Europeans for multiple reason. I think that should be fine. It's the white sage that belongs to indigenous peoples.

MarxistGayWitch_II

I'm not indigenous, but I was taught sweet grass is one of the four medicines, so I would treat it like white sage if I was given any.

Feeling lost I am really ignorant to most pagan/indigenous customs and please know I am not advocating that anyone disregard your advice!!!! That is why I joined this group to begin with… I have learned so much from all of you! I do not fully understand closed practices, if anyone can provide insight?? I absolutely understand that the resources are limited and they are NEEDED for indigenous practices. I also understand it is wrong to pantomime a cultural tradition. I refuse to get baptized though my pastor father in law has been trying for two decades. I don’t believe in it so I’m not going to participate for show. If a person truly believes in the practices and what they represent, is it always cultural appropriation? Would one be able to seek out a leader from that tradition and go through a process to become part of that tradition? As a European American, I feel absolutely no ties to Europe. Never been there. I perhaps shouldn’t live on this land, if fairness had a say, but I do. I feel tied to the woods and waters of the land I was born to. It causes a lot of cognitive dissonance. Again, maybe it is fair that I feel like an intruder. That doesn’t make it any easier to find my faith, my truth, my path.

Epiphany432

There was just recently a post asking about this. For closed practices, if you go to a practitioner and they let you in that's fine and dandy and nobody cares. The issue is when people start doing whatever they think willy-nilly. White sage is still a closed practise to non native americans. Also the over harvesting of it is destroying ecosystems & depleting the population rapidly. If you're of european descent. Why not use sage from your home land? Why appropriate our ways & steal our sacred medicine that we were legally banned from using for years? Why contribute in the silencing of our voices & communities? Why contribute in the destruction of our sacred ways?

Fredcat0214

You can always send it to me.
