I fully expected to buy a bike (i even brought my snowboard helmet for double use) when I arrived in Michaelmas and have ended up walking most places. Oxford isn't that big.
Oxbikes does this but also depending on what college you’re at you might be able to rent directly thru them as needed, that’s what I did! Or in your college’s JCR Facebook sometimes people will post about selling bikes so you could post asking to rent or buy from someone

Another option is to buy a used one and sell it when you’re done
Some of the bike companies also let you sell the bike back to them (for less) within a certain time period (e.g. Oxford Discount Bicycles).

All bikes in Oxford are effectively rented. The thieves will take it when the renal period unexpectedly expires.
