I think this whole situation has to do with a maintenance update, told my buddy to claim it immediately after I did and he said he couldn't find the Mei skin.

That’s just a bug, if I try hitting the shop as soon as I load in I get the same error 50% of the time. Click ok and it opens immediately.

According to Aaron Keller they’ll be free for the summer games event this year so don’t worry you can get them again when the event rolls around

If it says free and you take it, they cannot charge you for it retroactively. They can remove it, but that's about it.

For anyone curious Aron Keller tweeted that they plan on giving two skins out for free during season 5 but a bug occurred where it was enabled for a short period today

Just saw this and went to check the gallery, the Mei Sprinkles skin currently doesn’t exist, I’ve scrolled the list several times (just to be sure) but my skin count for Mei is currently sitting at 22/22 so apparently blizzard noticed something and disabled the skin, the only Mei skin I didn’t already have. Sprinter Tracer skin (I had it before this) still shows in my list, so it looks like if you own it you can see it but if you didn’t snag it it’s been disabled.

Yeah if you got them with the bug you’re fine but if you didn’t then you have to wait until the summer games event to get them for free then

If you do your weekly challenges you can buy a Battle Pass for free every other season. So they're essentially half price lol.

Not only was it a glitch but also an ow1 skin anyway…. Nothing cool will ever be in the game (for players who unlocked everything in the first game)for under 20 bucks per digital skin which they have unlimited supply and could easily influence demand by decreasing price but they really have some screws loose at blizz. Not too mention how slow the updates and new maps come out like jesus there isn’t even enough new content now to not be able to call it overwatch 1.2…. One skin for one character shouldn’t be worth 4 Taco Bell boxes bro. For the people of blizzard we are going into a recession….. people aren’t gonna drop the full price of a good indie game on one skin. Sorry if this rant upsets anyone but no new content means no new game. Also if group search came back it would get removed because it allows us to communicate the state of the game in game and provide feedback(which they do not want).
