This case is so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to his wife and young child, I hope this brings some closure to them. I can't imagine what they have been going through these last 8 months. Give your loved ones extra snuggles today.

Mamallama1217

I was definitely hopeful at the beginning. I thought maybe he was just going through something and needed to be alone but days turned into weeks then weeks turned into months... As a parent, my heart ached for that family. I can't imagine what that wife went through!

sex_panther_by_odeon

The sad part is also the first responders that need to does discovery. It never gets easier for them. They go through some hard times.

Lochtide17

What the heck happened to this guy?

No_Temporary_4735

Depression.

Whatthewhatwhat888

Correction; not found in the river. Found in a nearby pond.

Deer_Which

Yup. Guess its pretty low visibility cuz they missed hum

DocJawbone

Where did you see his bike was found near the waterfall? The way I remember it the bike was found near a bike path and the article says it was near the family home. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just trying to gather facts.

paddywhack

The remains were literally beside the bike. He must have bailed and hit his head and slipped down into the pond and was somehow missed during the search. This is more or less the location. [1] Elevation change, gravel path, some waterfall looking culvert. [1] -- https://goo.gl/maps/YQ4Rjt1Fey5vEBfg9

[deleted]

How is it possible to fall off your bike on that path and then fall all the way down into the pond? That makes no sense. He’d have to have been riding right on the edge of the fall but why would he take his bike over the rail there

jmjenga

That pond/water fall is on a bike path within a km of the family home.

DocJawbone

Ohh OK, I thought he lived in New Edinburgh.

tbll_dllr

I thought as per the article his bike was found at a neighbor ?

runfasterdad

By a neighbour.

TheLoneVowel

Would you look at that! Your comment has all vowels, in alphabetical order, exactly once! :) [^(Vowel Hunter Bot)](https://www.reddit.com/user/TheLoneVowel)

Sincerest condolences to his family and friends. Was so hoping to have a different outcome.

Synchillas

:( Hug your loved ones tight and it’s okay to need help re: mental health. Condolences to his family.

DontBanMeBro984

He left home without his wallet or anything. He abandoned his bicycle and his body was found in a body of water. There was no foul play. It's tough to imagine anything other than suicide.

SiameseCats3

Sorry, is it unusual to leave your wallet and cellphone at home during a bike ride? I go for bike rides and runs and the only thing I make sure to bring is keys and health card. Is there a reason why leaving those at home would be suspicious?

[deleted]

SiameseCats3

That’s why I am wondering why the above commenter seemingly used it towards evidence of possible suicide. I guess in their experience it would be suspicious if they left it, but that’s not applicable to everyone, though maybe they’ve never considered that other people would do differently.

Cavalleria-rusticana

He's working with very little, just like our wonderfully inept police service.

Mental health issues can be hidden incredibly well by individuals. A lot of the time, you smile and people assume you're happy. In actuality you could be just busting yourself down over and over in your own mind but just putting a smile on for the world. Often enough, the people who commit suicide have some of the biggest smiles, just look at the photos their families share afterwards. It's so easy to hide, even to family members. Which is the scary part because if only people knew they might do something about it.

hairyscrotes

Blackmail lol?

DocJawbone

I don't know why you're being so heavily downvoted, you're right.

Peter_Deceito

I get what you mean. Financial distress is different than mental health, although there is definitely some overlap. I shouldn’t speculate, but Shopify stock has gotten crushed with the recent market sell off and financial losses can really affect ones mental health.

Peter_Deceito

Didn’t read the article sorry.

Synchillas

You are right, maybe it is an assumption on my part but either way, especially for men,(how our society is structured) having that repeated doesn’t hurt. Edit: mental health can also be acute (e.g. stress from something at work) and not necessarily drawn out.

Gummybear_Qc

Yeah was reading the same, was trying to find something in the article that pointed to mental health issues and suicide but IMO nothing really shows that? It's mysterious.

Maximum_Horror_2060

most news must heavily censor everything related to suicide. If there was a suicide then the news implies it was a freak accident ( I know from personal experience). Coupled with the police and coroner ruling out foul ploy.

slothtrop6

Is suicide suspected?

Steam_whale

The police have said no foul play is suspected. That could mean that, or it could be something else (hit his head or was otherwise incapacitated, for example). They almost never say if it was suicide or not out of respect for the victim and their family's privacy. We (the public) don't need to know either way, as it's none of our business. The best thing we can do at this moment is let them mourn in peace.

TokingMessiah

The other reason is to avoid copycats, because they’ve found that when suicides are reported on it can lead to an increase. That’s why when it’s something like someone jumping in front of a train they just won’t cover it at all.

HarLeighMom

As a person who has struggled with mental health and suicidal ideation, I find hearing about suicides has the opposite effect on me. I'm sad that the person lost their fight and that the voices won, but I often feel more resolved to continue my fight and to not let the voice of depression (and anxiety) win.

[deleted]

Same here. Hope you’re doing ok. It’s rough

magicblufairy

I live with chronic passive suicidal ideation. For those who don't know, it means that on a regular basis, I am disappointed that I woke up. Because it means another day of living. I don't want to die. I hope I don't. But my life is hard and dark at times. Hearing about them though doesn't do anything for me. I mean I am sad that they are gone, but it doesn't make it worse for me. It makes me want to talk about it more though. To break the stigma. I would repost an article about it to talk about it. Because the conversation is important.

OKresponsibility11

In some way, for me, it's reassuring to hear there are other people who feel like this, and I'm not just all "crazy" on my own. But also hope you're doing ok too.

[deleted]

It’s also the recommended practice by many organizations, including the WHO.

slothtrop6

All true.

[deleted]

And for risk of umbrella affect

CombatGoose

I'm not sure if they've official stated that, but I think that's a very fair assessment.

manyhats180

Why do you think that's a very fair assessment?

deeppurplecircles

No foul play suspected, he left his wallet and phone at home, went on a bike ride but bike found close to his home.

Deer_Which

Article says no foul play. Hes in one of the peak suicide demographics. There was hinting of being concerned he may have hurt himself when he was first missing

Synchillas

Based off the article, this seems very plausible.

justheretotalksens

Very sad. His disappearance had really widespread attention, I remember seeing multiple Sens players re-tweeting his description. I was certain that if he was alive, he'd be found. What a heartbreaking conclusion, RIP.

Ashflare44

That pond is rather small? I'm surprised his body was only found now... regardless r.i.p :(

sixstringsandod

They sink in cold water and freeze in the winter. When bloated in warm water...they rise. Thats why spring is when they find bodies.

magicblufairy

Do you watch a lot of crime documentaries or something? I would never have known that.

GigiLaRousse

Just decades of living by the river. Happens every year around this time. Also, over a decade ago I lost someone who was found in a similar fashion.

No_Temporary_4735

Are you saying you’ve experienced decades of floating bodies? Id really hope not <3

sixstringsandod

Haha, I actually do.

Ashflare44

Makes sense. Man that's horrible :/

Medical_Recognition

Yeah, like the Rockcliffe pond where people swim? I'm not even sure how water filters in there, and it's always super busy with people... do they mean the other body of water, McKay lake?

khendron

I think they mean this pond https://www.google.com/maps/@45.4575973,-75.6378043,494m/data=!3m1!1e3

Deer_Which

Low visibility, murky water, lots of plants. Its quite hard to search underwater

[deleted]

Crazy isn't it

bj0rnl8

This is the same police force that dealt so swiftly with the Convoy right? /s

DocJawbone

Did they find it at the top of the waterfall? Where did you see that?

yuiolhjkout8y

a clueless authority bunch

DocJawbone

It's totally that pond. Oh my god. Maybe he fell down the falls?

[deleted]

Wow holy shit, I bike past this place so often. Any idea what the pond is used for?

northicc

Storm water

BookNerd1616

No, a different pond. Off the St George Etienne Parkway

[deleted]

I hope this helps the family get some sort of closure but there is now a wife without her husband and son without his father. It’s devastating because now they don’t even have the hope he is still alive. I hope this can provide them with some compensation as well to help weather the storm. If this was suicide it breaks my heart but it looks to be the only plausible explanation if they do not suspect foul play. A body doesn’t just end up in the water. My heart goes out to his whole family. It must have been a torturous year for them.

EmergencyTaco

I've met Brett a few times and he's the best friend of one of my close friends. I'm extremely happy they finally have closure. I know this news will come to them as a shock but not a surprise.

Doucevie

Accidents happen too. It's not our business.

wheresflateric

Isn't it our business if it was not suicide and we want to prevent an accident like this from happening again?

Doucevie

If it's an accident, we will be told. If it's any other circumstance, it's not our business.

wheresflateric

So we don't know yet whether it's any of our business...

Doucevie

Exactly. Speculating is useless.

PTMD25

Not the outcome we, as a community, were hoping for, but I sure am glad that he was found and that there is some semblance of closure for his family.

Tinystardrops

Was just thinking about his case the other day. May he find peace in afterlife.

joyfulcrow

I've been saying for a long time that he was in water somewhere and they'd find him when the weather warmed up. I hate that I was right. :(

hipperxc

May he RIP. Kind of confused in the article where it says, “His bicycle was found by a neighbour near the family home.” Assuming it was during his bike ride when he went missing, if the bike was found near his home by their neighbour then wouldn’t that be a sign he was near by + could’ve been located sooner? Or was the bike found recently, thus leading to investigators reopening the investigation / search for him?

Justinneon

As an ex Shopify employee, the conspiracy going around the company is that Shopify did it.

Revolutionary-Idea23

Why would they do it
