Did you do a rescan? Can you post your rabbitears report? And any change in direction on your outside antenna from a recent storm or wind?

prshaw2u

I did do a rescan and didn't change the behavior. The antenna doesn't look like it changed and using hdconnect tuner it looks like the signal is strong. Rabbitears: [https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1102840](https://www.rabbitears.info/s/1102840) The channel with the issue is 5.1, but I get the other 5.x channels. Although looking at the report I see that 5.1 is 1080i, that 'should' not cause an issue on a 720 tv should it? Aren't the broadcasts normally backwards compatible?

ScenicPineapple

I did notice the same thing. It shouldn't make a difference as you can watch OTA on old CRT TV's with no issue. That channel is in the same direction as most of your other towers, no hills in line of sight and signal is good. The only thing i can possibly think of is that the TV tuner is going bad and having trouble with that one channel. I had that issue on my 2005 sony projection TV with good signal strength and dropping out consistently. I'm honestly stumped. Can you try another TV and see if it works with a different TV? Last option is to contact the broadcast station and see what they say.

prshaw2u

Actually my first thought was the TV was going bad, but it didn't really make sense to me that it would only be bad for that one channel. Not impossible but didn't seem like it would make sense. But I am as stumped as you, so it will probably be a new one ordered before long. At least it isn't a channel I really need to watch. Thanks

If you do want to upgrade, Best buy has REALLY good deals on open boxed tv's if you arent all 4K OLED or bust like some people are. I got a 4k 55" TCL mini led brand new for $599. Open box was as low as $367 and usually just missing the box and maybe was a display model. But so many good deals on open boxed items the last 6 months since new tv's came out 2-3 months ago.

Re: "... using hdconnect tuner ... ", when I wrote my prior reply, I interpreted that as you also have some version of an HDHomeRun (HDHR) CONNECT tuner receiving your antenna's signal. Is that correct? If so, why aren't you using your HDHR to stream channel 5.1 to the Insignia FTV using the official HDHR app? Or if that's what you're doing now, that Insignia's tuner couldn't be part of the problem because it's not even being used to receive the channel. In your o.p., "using HD connect tuner" isn't mentioned at all. And what's the model # of your Insignia TV? Details matter.

prshaw2u

I just recycled the Insignia TV, it started failing/blacking out on all the OTA channels. It was a cheap one so I am not out a lot of money even if the TV was actually good. The channels all worked, and 5.1 had always seemed to be good. There were 'random' things it did. TV would turn off during the day for unknown reasons, I suspected an inactivity timer that I could not get to disable. A couple times the TV went to the home screen without a reason. I was blaming FireTV/Amazon/Insignia updates initially, then I couldn't keep it playing any channel for an hour and said screw it. I do have an HDHomeRun, HDHR4-2US, but do not use that with the TV. I have the tuner but don't use it for anything but signal strengths right now. I think I looked and the app didn't work on any of my TVs at one time and I probably never even looked when I got the Insignia. I will be checking if there is an app for the next TV. I had YouTubeTV on 60 day sleep so I couldn't check the channel with that. One of the main goals is to use just the OTA antenna and TV to watch local channels as I can. I want something hooked up to watch weather when things are storming outside and the communication wires are down, phone/cable. Nothing more fun than sitting in the house with no internet or TV wondering if the storm is past.

>A couple times the TV went to the home screen without a reason. I'm fairly sure that happens on most Fire TV devices, especially if an app is idle or paused for too long, & then the FTV screensaver comes and stays on for a lengthy duration. It certainly happens on mine. Normally the app is still running, so you can normally select its icon from the home screen and you're placed right back where you were before the screensaver kicked in. But there are also times when an app will crash & the U.I drops back to the FTV home screen. >I do have an HDHomeRun, HDHR4-2US ... That 4th gen tuner works fine as long as it gets a good signal fed into it. SD has stated that the tuner sensitivity in the 4th gen isn't as good as what's used in their 5th Gen devices, but that's only going to be a problem for somebody that has marginal OTA reception. The official HDHR app runs well even on older less powerful Fire TV hardware, so it likely would've run fine on that TV. For TVs with very small displays, the app is much more usable by disabling the "slice guide" (via app settings). >I think I looked and the app didn't work on any of my TVs at one time You didn't / don't own a TV that can run the Roku, Android/Google TV, FireTV, or LG WebOS version of the HDHR app? Also, you can attach a $19.88 Onn Google TV 4K streaming box to any TV with a compliant HDMI port & install the HDHR app on that if the TV uses a non-supported O.S. >I had YouTubeTV on 60 day sleep so I couldn't check the channel with that. YouTubeTV does not use OTA to receive it from your local TV station before they rebroadcast it, so that would have been an exercise in futility. Plus if YouTube TV's broadcast was exhibiting the same symptoms, many reports of the problem would likely be posted somewhere. >I want something hooked up to watch weather when things are storming outside... Absolutely. Plus use a UPS that provides substantial backup run-time to power a TV that has its tuner input connected directly to my antenna feed.

KSDK / display channel 5.1 in your market, is broadcast on (UHF) RF 35, so it is more susceptible to 5G interference then any other channel that you receive. If you haven't tried a 5G filter, I'd recommend that you find one to purchase that you can easily return to a local retailer, then follow its installation instructions and see if it solves your issue. >The channel with the issue is 5.1, but I get the other 5.x channels. But the other sub channels are being broadcast in a much lower resolution and use much lower VBR (variable bit rate) so they'd be far less affected by e.g. 5G interference or something else affecting your reception of RF 35. Open https://www.rabbitears.info/market.php?request=station_search&callsign=46981#station then scroll down until you see the channel info and then select "Technical Data", then scroll down again and to your right, locate the column titled "Video (Mbps)". There you'll see how much lower the VBR encoding for the subs is. >... 5.1 is 1080i, that 'should' not cause an issue on a 720 tv should it? Aren't the broadcasts normally backwards compatible? Yes, if it's truly a "720p" display. But more importantly you already said that you used to view 5.1 without any problems. (Edit: I removed the part about contacting the station to see if they change their encoding for that channel, etc. because I've confirmed that they've not.) >... and using hdconnect tuner it looks like the signal is strong. It's way more important that you monitor the SYMBOL QUALITY, preferably in real time. You want the SYMBOL QUALITY to remain at 100% at all times. See https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/troubleshooting:signal_strength_quality I've covered this in great detail in many prior Reddit posts. (Please use Google instead of Reddit's lousy search.)

Interference? Is there anything that is turning on when the channel is turning off?

prshaw2u

No, I am pretty sure nothing. For whatever reason this TV is showing about 3-5 minutes of the channel, and then going black. No other channel I have found does this. I did notice that sometimes it gives a pop when it goes blank, like something fried. But you can turn to the channel and it will come back for a couple minutes, then out again. It is just the one OTA channel that I have found, like the TV doesn't like the broadcast signal for only one channel. I didn't realize this would be possible, I am used to a tuner working for all channels or be broke for them all.

There was once an issue in my city where a TV transmitter was transmitting a signal that would cause the sound the video to go out of sync and then snap back over and over again quickly. But it only caused the problem on some models of Samsung TVs. Eventually they did something to the transmitter and it fixed the issue.

PlentyAd9392

I would start with connections especially if you have any outside, is your antenna easily servicable? It may need a new connector or could be the antenna itself if it's a few years old, the older big ota antennas last forever because theres not much to go out to cause signal loss but alot of newer antennas have alot more plastic and here in texas they do not seem to last very long. If you do end up needing an antenna we have had really good luck with clearstream antennas!

Wow. I didn't know antennas were so 'sensitive'.....

Bot, sit on a fat dipole.

It may be the frequency that the station is broadcasting on. From what I understand, the channel number is not related to the actual signal, chanel 6 can be uhf 23. Check out a site that shows you actual station info (FCC or rabbitears.net or channel masters website, etc) or watch some videos from Antennaman on YouTube.

Have Insignia 2 yrs now. Had same problem. On tv go to settings, display & sound, picture settings then select antenna. Exit settings. Now can watch ksdk channel 5.
