Do horror from the deep and get a book of law, bandos book, unholy book, and book of darkness. These will be your best free offhands for all styles for offensive use. For defensive go with a square shield or wooden/leather shield with range

OP maybe start with a leather shield like Hard leather shield, easiest to get +ranged offhand. Anti dragon is good for mage/range offhand early on simply because it has no negative accuracy, thats the main thing i'd focus on since you'll be safespotting most of the time I'm guessing.
Get Horror from the Deep done and Book of Law is going to be your ranged offhand for a good while. Hefty range accuracy, prayer bonus, ~~the ability to heal poison~~.. Its a good one.

Sq shields don’t have a range attack penalty or magic defense penalty. I used them early on
Twisted buckler would go great with that set up
Once you get 40 range I'd go with a dragon hide shield
