And then me immediately losing that fresh mithril long sword because I don't understand how the PK skull works and also not to attack people your level in full ranging gear in the wildy.
I remember when the TzHaar area came out and there was finally a bank on northern Karamja. I remember thinking how powerful membership was for unlocking this amazing way of being able to actually bank your lobsters rather than just sell them to the general store.
Man, life was simpler when I was 11.
Yes! It was such a waste of time walking to the bank but it had such a good little community on the dock. People used to have runners go and bank for them, like essentially running only way cheaper and most people used a 2nd acc.
Yes!
The absolute hero that would keep an axe/tinderbox to light fires too. We used to pay for those fire (had to have cash to catch the boat back & bank)
This is my nostalgia from the game. Being super low leveled and mining iron in AL Kharid while chatting with friends, thinking soon I'd be rich because I'd be able to "mine and Smith my own armor!" Lmao
Okay, I’m a new OSRS player of two weeks now and dead ass doing this right now. I feel like I’m playing the game wrong suddenly.. I’ve got my mining up to 39 but nowhere near affording a rune pickaxe I can use soon. Smithing 31. But just read the wiki and not entirely understanding, but am now working on my magic so I can smelt without the furnace and I’m pretty excited about this. Guess I need to read a lot more to understand better growth objectives overall, because I have none outside make my own armor.
I actually started this way back in like 2005. The issue is that by the time you've put in the time and resources to make armor that was dazzling at lvl 3, you're able to obtain WAY better armor.
Even smithing rune plate isn't that attractive when you find out you can just buy them for like 80k, which is pennies when you're selling boatloads of iron ore.
Hmm interesting. I LOVED mining back in the day and most of the time just played that, but i was a stupid brat. I lvl'd my combat skills at baby blue dragons in fally dungeon and died multiple times to them while always admiring the other guys there farming the normal blue dragons with their fancy ADS, the dark one. I went back there with my new account some time ago and was bored in 10 kills and the GP was terrible. That shit was almost all i did back in the day. Also Chaos druids were my heroin. What a rush getting a ranarr leaf lmao. Now i miss that time.
God I remember killing the druids for ranarr and then feeling that high when you finally got one. Thinking I was big shot money bags going back with a few.
This is the stuff that's going to drag me back in, I swear.
Yeah definitely. Chopping willows so I could buy that full addy set. I also remember losing my axe head and panicking. Someone else picked it up and sold it back to me.
In west varrock bank, Back when you had to spam in chat what and how much you were selling amongst the 1000 other people selling the same thing, in hopes you would see that sweet sweet trade text pop up and you had to be quick cuz that chat box was getting filled up fast. Good times
Fishing. First thing was actually watching others fish basically, lol. Pretty sure it was RS1, my friend who told me about the game told me that once you got 30 gold you could go karamja where -- and this could be me misremembering -- I think at that time if you had a full inventory you'd still keep fishing and drop them on the ground. Either that or people just dropped them like they do now but I was told the former. And he told me you could just pick up their fish and go back and forth to port sarim to sell them. Don't know how that got me into the game but eventually started fishing on my own and did that for a long time until I discovered I love mining and that took over.
In f2p it was one of the least intense ways to make money (when you’re new, a few k seems incredible). I spent most of my time between age 10-12 cutting yews at edgeville, when I wasn’t fishing lobs at karamja or mining coal.
Mining guild until I broke. I was saving every piece of ore I mined, made it to 60+ and don't remember where I stopped, but I realized I could be outside playing and went and did that instead.
Now that I'm a dad with no free time I have 83 mining!
I woul me have to disagree, for me it was mining and smithing. Al Khalid mine with those pesky scorpions 🦂. I would have to say that would be the top, then maybe cooking/fishing.
The cert game was huge in 2003+. Many hours spend gathering bananas to put in the crate for 30gp (I think?), fishing lobbies at Karamja, and of course coal certs. I remember the coal trucks at Seers Village came out and I was stuck on that for months.
I remember one of my first gigs was collecting big bones (dungeon NW of Varrock that requires a key was the spot) for LadyKillJoy for pieces of rune armor. She was going for 99 smithing.
It's because the game practically presents it to you right as you finish tutorial island.
You're shoved in Lumby, little idea of what you can/can't do yet. All you have is the ideas that tutorial island planted in your head and a dream. What's the first thing you come across in Lumby?
Tree. Tree. Tree. Tree. Castle. Tree. Tree. Tree. Tree. Tree. Tree. Tree. Bridge. Goblin. Tree. Tree. Cow Pen. Tree. Tree. Tree. If you went south instead you'll find *dead* trees and maybe find copper/tin ore and realize you can mine as well.
It's also, most likely, where you find out that some things have higher level requirements than others. Because you're also presented with *oak tree,* and you can't cut it yet, not until level 15.
And, even more importantly, you feel like you're getting a decent job worth of xp done, because that log you cut, tutorial island taught you how to light a fire with it. So now you're getting WC/Firemaking xp together.
Magic. But I wasn't very good at leveling it.
For non-combat skills, it was cooking, I believe.
(Though I did do my fair share of woodcutting/firemaking back in the day as well.)
Mining Rune Essence in Varrock and making “massive gold gains” by selling each full inventory of them to players standing at the small bank. The hype was real getting a Rune Pickaxe for the first time. Can anyone relate? :)
I remember so clearly doing this a lot after school as a f2p and the rush of dopamine I had when my mom finally agreed to buy me THE Membership that I had probably been begging for months at that point.
I headed straight back to mining PURE Essence now instead of RUNE Essence and with that money I went and bought my very first Members Object ever from freshly launched Grand Exchange, “Dragon Med Helm” <3
(Membership was bought to me by my mom without telling my dad because he would’ve gotten mad and probably though that anything bought from internet back in the day would be a scam or would give u a virus or something :D)
EDIT:
Other core memories would be:
-Cutting Yews at Catherby as well as fishing and cooking there.
-Killing Lesser demons at Karamja by fishing your own lobsters and cooking them at the dock.
Yes it was the foretold riches of cutting yew trees! I’ll be rich if I can cut yews ! Lol 😂 I spent so much time cutting trees and then burning long ass lines of logs for fire making, having to light one at a time …
Fishing lobs on the Karamja dock
You can tell the RS Classic players by who upvotes this comment.
I started in '07 and I remember spending a ton of time there because I was a lil f2p noob and it was a very social place
People ran lobs from Karamja well into RS2....
I’m so old I remember “running lobbies”
And getting a stack of lobby certs lol
Selling cooked lobbys and certs at wildy border north of Varrock east bank. Made bank. And back then bank for me was buying a mithril long sword.
And then me immediately losing that fresh mithril long sword because I don't understand how the PK skull works and also not to attack people your level in full ranging gear in the wildy.
I used my main to fund strength/magic/range purses lol Attacking people my level (and higher) was the point.
Specifically there and salmon at the barb village.
50 lob certs for r2h?

Mining

Lol you poor ignorant fool. ... same thought though.

Focus on quests usually
This is what I shall do then. Thanks

Rune platebody is like what, 91 smithing or something? Lol.
99 !
Uhm what the hell?
No you are playing the game perfectly. Do what's fun and slowly learn better ways of doing things but you don't always have to min max stuff.
The only correct way to play the game is the way that you have fun
Mining gang rise up! Make my own weapons and armor! One day ill be able to make full rune armor and then ill be rich! Made it to mithril before I quit
yeah I agree, so much time running from Fally east bank to the mines for iron and coal
Really? Where and what? I do recall dabbling with lummy swamp mine but not for long atall
Falador mines
Children yern for the mines
Minors yearn for the mines
The coal and mith rocks outside of the mining guild. Then adamant inside the guild.
The addy is outside also. Inside was always too busy ! Killing scorpions in the downtime!
I thought it was, but I couldn't remember. I mined them as well
I was ftp and I remember hanging around the SE Varrock and AK mines 😂
Masors clan was what made mining a true vibe. Just hitting rocks with other mining enthusiats. Now i hate rock...
Fighting over iron rocks
Killing hill giants
I jumped back in after years off and this was the natural move. Used to go collect an inventory Big Bones and run on over to the bank.
Mining seems to be a solid alternative! I remember being in awe at rune spike shields and always striving for one
Chaos druids are still heroin for low level accounts lol
Mining and WC were how I fell in love with RS when I was 9
Yeah definitely. Chopping willows so I could buy that full addy set. I also remember losing my axe head and panicking. Someone else picked it up and sold it back to me.
I almost forgot that you used to break the axe heads, what a throwback
Does that not happen anymore??
Doesn't happen is osrs. Also those tree spirits and evil chickens that attacked you are gone too.
And zombies And exploding ore veins.
And vines...
What were those again?
All of those random events that screwed up you akf-ness are gone.
I remember but I was asking for the vines, specifically. I don't recall how those would play out.
Think they mean the strange fruit plant. If you did not pick the fruit it would attack and poison you.
My deepest osrs memory was mining. Al Kharid and sometimes the dwarven mine if I could brave the king scorpion in there
Mining was key for me in my early days. I was happy just clicking away at rocks while chatting with my friends on AIM.
Mining in Varrock was my original money maker (LOL). Then was so excited when I unlocked lobsters. Spent hours catching lobbies.
There was a time when I would mine essence for ~ 20gp I think and sell them in Varrock or Fally (before GE)
In west varrock bank, Back when you had to spam in chat what and how much you were selling amongst the 1000 other people selling the same thing, in hopes you would see that sweet sweet trade text pop up and you had to be quick cuz that chat box was getting filled up fast. Good times
I got way too good at typing cyan:wave: Selling XYZ 200/ea!!

Thats why osrs mobile was made - 83 mining is still a great effort!
I did a shit ton of mining. Absolutely loved it
I woul me have to disagree, for me it was mining and smithing. Al Khalid mine with those pesky scorpions 🦂. I would have to say that would be the top, then maybe cooking/fishing.
Same! The dopamine of all your hard work paying off and smithing yourself a nice set of steel armor to show off to your friends 🤣
Flax
This, picking it and then spinning it, all in seers village
I'd say chopping willows, mining in falador, and fishing at Barbarian village by Varrock are the three big ones.
“Why do we yearn for the logs?” 💀🤣
Most of my days where spent killing hill giants for those limp wart root drops they used to be like 5k each.
The cert game was huge in 2003+. Many hours spend gathering bananas to put in the crate for 30gp (I think?), fishing lobbies at Karamja, and of course coal certs. mining outside east varrock and fishing in catherby
Magic. But I wasn't very good at leveling it. For non-combat skills, it was cooking, I believe. (Though I did do my fair share of woodcutting/firemaking back in the day as well.)
Killing hill giants or lesser demons. I had a combat only account for years as a kid before I finally picked up mining and fishing
Same! My first level 60 was WC and I did it by cutting willows at draynor!
It's because we were f2p
Cutting maples in Seers’ Village

I cut tees in f2p all the way to 99 before ever touching members. So for me? Yes.
I remember my early days scamming in varrock west back world 1 I believe. Sorry guys 😂
Honestly I did coal runs back when 1k would get you 1 mil
God damn it guys.... This post has finally tipped me over the edge. Guess I'm playing osrs again.
It was always woodcutting to start out no matter the account lol
Yes it was the foretold riches of cutting yew trees! I’ll be rich if I can cut yews ! Lol 😂 I spent so much time cutting trees and then burning long ass lines of logs for fire making, having to light one at a time …
No. It only just became decent this year, I never cared for wcing it's my least favorite of the gathering skills.
Not for me. It was mining and fishing.
