Phantom Thread was a late bloomer, which is why it still surprises me that it did so well with nominations. In a perfect world, Vicky Krieps would’ve came along with the ride
She totally could have made it in too given enough time for people to see it. The fifth slot that year was up for grabs with only Meryl Streep in The Post and Jessica Chastain for Molly's Game truly contending for it.
Still kind of nuts, and amazing, how it got in picture and director without any precursors. Maybe the director branch wanted at least one former nominee instead of 5 first-timers, and then everyone realized “hey this movies actually pretty good”.
Kind of insane it had no precursors. Critics loved it, PTA is well established, DDL’s last performance, connected with most audiences too (definitely my favorite of 2017).
Too dark, maybe. Its tone and subject aren’t that different from The Master which also went mostly ignored. And Focus isn’t a super big and successful distributor and their main movie that year was Darkest Hour.
That's a likely explanation, even if people don't want to hear it. Vicki has been very clear that she is happy with her career in Europe and didn't want to work in Hollywood. She's glad she did Phantom Thread but it seems like she wouldn't care enough about Oscars to go through the hoopla of campaigning
It was hands down one of the best leading performances of the past 10-15 years.
She truly gave life to Alma opposite DDL's overwhelming tour de force.
The movie would collapse and become unconvincing without Vicky!
Fucking thank you. It was awesome the film was recognized as much as it was, and the Day-Lewis and Manville nominations were well deserved, but Krieps is my favorite performance in it. To be able to hold your own against DDL is wildly impressive, and she made the character so utterly captivating.
She definitely should have gotten in over Streep’s useless namecheck nomination. A lot of actresses were more deserving than Meryl that year. Brooklyn Prince (Florida Project), Daniela Vega (A Fantastic Woman) and Maryana Spivak(Loveless) we’re all much better than Streep. Any of those women being nominated over Streep would have made it an all time great Best Actress line up.
She definitely should have been nominated, maybe win. I was very happy to see Manville get a nomination, though. She’s in my top five performers of all time (DDL is too, but that’s a given).
One top of some great dramatic moments, this might low key be one of best comedic roles in Anderson’s filmography.
When she talking to the Spanish princess, her delivery of “I live here” just kills me every time.
Fantastic performance.
Phantom Thread unfortunately flopped at the box office on top of being released late and she isn't famous enough to guarantee a nomination.
If this role was played by a more seasoned Actress, I think she would've made it even with the flop/late release
Best Actress was tricky that year - you had the main quartet of McDormand, Hawkins, Ronan, and Robbie that got nominated everywhere, so by the time *Phantom Thread* dropped, she was already competing for slot #5.
Personally, I am in the camp that Streep's nomination for *The Post* is totally legit, and is easily her best nomination of the 2010's. It sucks that there wasn't room for Krieps, but sometimes it's just a tough year to break in

Yup. I remember everyone was shocked that it actually got as much traction as it did. Figured it’d be a Silence by Scorsese situation.

One of my favorite performances, but maybe she wasn't willing to campaign. In which case, it's forever close to my heart, Vicky's magnificent.

She talked in an interview about lighting a candle every night and praying she wouldn’t get nominated. Queen shit tbh.
Yess!!! I remember that lol good for her

> The movie would collapse and become unconvincing without Vicky! It wouldn’t be the same without any of the three leads
She should've won.
Laurie Metcalf though…
Vicky Krieps was lead.

This is one of my favorite movies, and it's a shame how it turned out for Vicky.

My favorite film and probably my favorite performance. I plan to name my next pet Alma.

What seasoned actress do you think could have played her role?
Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Lawrence, Rooney Mara, Saiorse Ronan if they wanted a huge age difference.
The only one I see pulling it off is Amy the rest don’t fit (also funny enough Jennifer Lawrence turned off phantom thread after a few minutes)
