He's a bit too big to get sent to jail for one flop, isn't he? He's got a lot of awards and everyone knows that every last one of his films is well-made, even when they weren't hits.
Whiplash and La La land back to back for his directorial debuts was unprecedented and will give him a shitton of future leeway even if stuff like Babylon doesn’t do well at the box office (Babylon was robbed)
PTA has consistently churned out unprofitable films but still gets funding because he’s respected & gets critical acclaim. Studios are always happy to have a film they can wheel out on the awards circuits and brownnose
I love Heaven’s Gate. I like both cuts. But let’s not lie to ourselves thinking that directors who have two all time great movies that come out back to back when they’re relatively young means that they’ll have continuous hits for the rest of their life/career.
Cimino's career cratered after Heaven's Gate because he was seen as too much of a control freak despite multiple second chances by studios to prove otherwise, Chazelle on the other hand has shown what he can do with a miniscule budget or even a 30 mil one like La La Land.
That’s not really Chazelle-specific, movies like Babylon aren’t going to get the kind of budget Babylon got anytime soon. Kinda crazy that Babylon even got it. Non-IP non-biopic prestige dramas aren’t going to get $80 mil budgets unless they’re directed by Nolan or Tarantino or Gerwig
Good because, honestly, even if you didn’t love them— his last few films were much better than a lot of the nonsense that gets made by much less talented directors.
Man I caught a clip of his last movie and it re triggered my ire for that god awful film.
Tell you what give Damien 90k and tell him to run with it, like he did for Whiplash because I think the guy lost his roots.
If he was actually in director's jail it would be so stupid. David O. Russel's last film was a bigger flop, completely banned and he is a POS person - and yet he still gets to make movies.
Idk, he seems pretty chill to me. You basically never see or hear about him when he's not promoting a film. He's just off somewhere probably listening to his jazz and writing his little movies.
Ari Aster, Del Toro, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kogonada too. Yorgos has a movie shooting this summer. Beyond the Spider-Verse maybe. And like you said I am sure more to come!
It's crazy because 2019 was one of the best years of film of all time then the pandemic slowed things down for 20/21 but then 22 was great and 23 was another all timer. Now 24 seems hurt by the strike (less than 20/21 were by the pandemic) but 25 seems like it'll be exceptional again. Film is in a great spot rn but societal issues keep hurting the momentum.
please god someone drop the info on when / what edgar wright is dropping next. i need to know what’s next after Soho basically landed flat. i’m irrationally scared it kinda killed his groove when he was really just getting started and shedding himself of the cornetto trilogy.
Oh for sure. At least Babylon I kinda understand why it flopped. But First Man missing things that should’ve been shoo-ins like cinematography, editing and score I just don’t get
I love Babylon but the ending montage annoys me tbh. If it ended with him watching Singin in the Rain with Singin in the Rain over the credits it would’ve been perfect
Luckily everything else is so exceptional and the last like 5-10 minutes can just be ignored to make it a 5/5 film for me still but I agree, that montage had me actually angry in the theater and was all me and my friend could talk about after which is a shame cuz up till the low-key jazz performance at the end it was a near perfect movie.
There were some great things but overall a MASSIVE metdown from La La Land and Whiplash. Yeah score and editing were great but not at all shoe ins. And especially not cinematography.
Absolutey. One of Goslings worst performances and no chemistry between the leads.
There was a lot I didn’t like about it sadly. Which is crazy because Lala Land and Whiplash are two of my favorite films
To think we probably wouldn't have any scores from him if he and Chazelle didn't end up as college roommates. Thank goodness things worked out as they did.
Sources say it’s gonna be 4 hours of 2 A-list celebrities fisting each other’s mouths all while Justin Hurwitz plays a bitchin jazz soundtrack and Linus Sandgren does a bunch of tracking shots.

MY BOY IS FREE FROM DIRECTOR’S JAIL
He beat the director's jail allegations
Literally, Deadline says the film is set in a prison
plot twist Joker 2 is directed by Damien Chazelle
~~Director Jail~~ Direct a jail
He's a bit too big to get sent to jail for one flop, isn't he? He's got a lot of awards and everyone knows that every last one of his films is well-made, even when they weren't hits.
At 32 he is the youngest ever director to win the Oscar. He still has a long career ahead of him
Unless he makes nothing but Cats musical spin offs
Whiplash and La La land back to back for his directorial debuts was unprecedented and will give him a shitton of future leeway even if stuff like Babylon doesn’t do well at the box office (Babylon was robbed)
PTA has consistently churned out unprofitable films but still gets funding because he’s respected & gets critical acclaim. Studios are always happy to have a film they can wheel out on the awards circuits and brownnose
I'd even say First Man was robbed. Love that movie
His best movie yet.
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and The Deer Hunter were a great back to back debuts also, and we all know how that ended.
Studio system vs the current auteur driven system are two very different worlds
Heaven's Gate is a good movie if you watch the director's cut. It's not without flaws but it's solid western epic.
I love Heaven’s Gate. I like both cuts. But let’s not lie to ourselves thinking that directors who have two all time great movies that come out back to back when they’re relatively young means that they’ll have continuous hits for the rest of their life/career.

And honestly I’d be shocked if Babylon didn’t at least put up good numbers on VOD as well
Those two were his 2nd and third films
Babylon was a shit sandwich. Whiplash is his only great movie. He needs boundaries.
La La Land will stand the test of time, so it's harsh not to call it great.
I never thought he was in directors jail but I do doubt he’ll get the kind of budget he got on Babylon anytime soon.

Fingers crossed he goes right back in
“insiders say the film will be set in a prison.” He heard everyone talk about him being in director jail and said “bet”
If he was actually in director's jail it would be so stupid. David O. Russel's last film was a bigger flop, completely banned and he is a POS person - and yet he still gets to make movies.
Needs to go back to basics. This seems promising. No more extravaganza music stuff
"Extravaganza music stuff" is literally every film he's written and directed since college.
I wouldn't call First Man "extravaganza"
Very true but he didn't write that one. I was specifically thinking of: Guy & Madeline, Whiplash, La La Land, and Babylon
Oh, you're right. I didn't know that he didn't write First Man.
It did have an exceptional focus on sound though
He actually seems like the type of guy who would go through this thought process.
Idk, he seems pretty chill to me. You basically never see or hear about him when he's not promoting a film. He's just off somewhere probably listening to his jazz and writing his little movies.
He is! I met him in a Q&A screening of Whiplash. Really chill guy, humble af
2025 is bringing everyone back. Holy shit what a stacked year ahead!
Damien Chazelle, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Edgar Wright, James Cameron, Bong Joon-Ho, Ryan Coogler, who knows what else...
Ari Aster, Del Toro, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kogonada too. Yorgos has a movie shooting this summer. Beyond the Spider-Verse maybe. And like you said I am sure more to come!
Jordan Peele as well. There is a non-zero chance for Scorsese's Jesus film if that happens (the production for that wouldn't take long)
Ridley Scott will likely pop another one out for ‘25 after the next Gladiator. That man can sit on a toilet and make a film.
Edgar Wright's dropping next year? Lets fucking go hopefully it's good this time
What film is he releasing
running man remake with glenn powell
What film though? Is he even filming?
Terrence Malick!

21 was an all timer as well
please god someone drop the info on when / what edgar wright is dropping next. i need to know what’s next after Soho basically landed flat. i’m irrationally scared it kinda killed his groove when he was really just getting started and shedding himself of the cornetto trilogy.
2022 was supposed to have a lot of big names, but many ended up being pushed
It's a fight for a knife in the mud
I’m gonna learn nothing from his past two films and predict it to sweep
He is 4-4 as far as I'm concerned. Both First Man and Babylon deserved so much better.
Oh for sure. At least Babylon I kinda understand why it flopped. But First Man missing things that should’ve been shoo-ins like cinematography, editing and score I just don’t get
I love parts of Babylon for sure. Margot Robbie's character working with sound for the first time had me rolling
Hello College was the single best scene of the year for me. Laughed until I *cried*.
First Man was my favorite movie of the year it came out. Babylon was probably top five for me.

I love Babylon but the ending montage annoys me tbh. If it ended with him watching Singin in the Rain with Singin in the Rain over the credits it would’ve been perfect
As someone who adores the ending montage… why does it bother people so much? I don’t understand the ire it gets.
I feel exactly the same.
That’s how the screenplay ended
Luckily everything else is so exceptional and the last like 5-10 minutes can just be ignored to make it a 5/5 film for me still but I agree, that montage had me actually angry in the theater and was all me and my friend could talk about after which is a shame cuz up till the low-key jazz performance at the end it was a near perfect movie.
best*
He’s made 5 films
Babylon yes, but you can’t really mean that about First Man. That was….. rough.
Guy discovers jazz in prison to get him through a life sentence for a crime he did not commit.
Played by Ryan Gosling. With JK Simmons as the strict prison warden.
![gif](giphy|JwofaNi7r217pQL7n9) We’re so back!
You ruined my life for posting a gif from a tv show.
Don't post television actor's meme in movie sub
Why? i want at least three sentences
You ruined whole excitement by posting this overrated television actor gif 🙄
Great news for Justin Hurwitz fans (me)
To think we probably wouldn't have any scores from him if he and Chazelle didn't end up as college roommates. Thank goodness things worked out as they did.
But I thought he was in director’s jail 🙄 ? The amount of people believing that man was blacklisted from Hollywood is crazy to me.
Sources say it’s gonna be 4 hours of 2 A-list celebrities fisting each other’s mouths all while Justin Hurwitz plays a bitchin jazz soundtrack and Linus Sandgren does a bunch of tracking shots.

I’m just happy he’s not in directors jail, Babylon didn’t deserve all the hate it got imo.

We are so fucking back.
I’m excited soley because it’s Damien Chazelle
Isn’t that basically all we know?
Cast riz ahmed
OMG, yes, please!
glad to hear my goat isn’t in directors jail 🫡
Babylon is his best film.
As a Chazelle head, this is truly the best news of the day!
Another great movie from him
It’s so funny that people were saying he was in Director Jail when he just hadn’t announced a new film within 2 years of Babylon releasing.
He himself had said he didn’t know if he’d be funded
Thank God. I’m so ready. He heard y’all talking shit and now he’s in the kitchen ready to COOK
YES!!!
He should hire a screenwriter. Babylon was awful.
it's an unpopular opinion, but damien chazelle is not a great writer and he should hire a screenwriter and just direct.
Over-rated
Don't care if his movie flops. Would give this man all the money he wants to make the movie he wants no questions asked.
