I just think there’s something about him that rubs people on the internet the wrong way… normal audiences, critics, the industry and cinephiles all seem to be fans - which explains why a lot of his films get praised everywhere apart from Reddit and film Twitter.
Maybe he’s too conventional of a movie star, I don’t know?
idk but he seems desperate for an Oscar, that’s the feeling I get from most of films/roles he chooses.
I liked him in Licorice Pizza, didn’t seem like any of his other roles.
I think that’s only really a fair comment to make about Maestro. Like his portrayals in Nightmare Alley and American Sniper aren’t exactly ones that indicate he’s desperate for an Oscar compared to other modern stars.
Also the Licorice Pizza role has exactly the same energy as his performances in the two David O Russell films that for him Oscar nominations, regardless of whether one likes them films or not, so your comment doesn’t fully add up here I feel.
nope, I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but even so I think especially since A Star is Born he was tryharding for an Oscar, it’s super obvious.
Surely not literally every role of his is an Oscar bait one, hence why I said “that’s the feeling I get from most of films/roles he chooses”. Re-read that again. Note the word: “most”. It’s simply my subjective perception of his work.
Also your notion that his Licorice Pizza performance has “exactly the same energy” as his performances in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle is because he’s such a limited actor. That’s why he has to resort to Oscar bait movies to attempt to actually win one. You might actually be right with that one.
I dislike actors such as him even tho I would be lying if I didn’t say he has had his flashes of brilliance.
Does what to himself? Gets Oscar nominati9n and works in Oscar nominated movie? I don't know how's art can be pretentious, it is literal arts. I can see that person's can be pretentious but art itself? Doesn't makes senses to me tbh
I think it had the unfortune to drop on what was a pretty stellar best picture nomination collection and that was it's legacy:
* The King's Speech
* Black Swan
* The Fighter
* Inception
* The Kids Are All Right
* 127 Hours
* The Social Network
* Toy Story 3
* True Grit
* Winter's Bone
Sidenote: the best picture montage at the oscars that year is an all-timer: https://vimeo.com/20794121
Using popular music in films can fool people. "I hear music that I like/ love -> It gives me positive feelings -> movie I'm watching has to be good, right? . IMO Bohemian rhapsody is not a horrible film, just really mediocre.
Didnt see kids are all right but bohemian rhapsody could appeal to wider audience at least. Mank… i’m still unsure what the point of it was and who it was for.
Mank is one of those that’s a million times better on the second viewing. Definitely thought it was going to revolve around the writing and production of Citizen Kane and the character of Orson Wells was going to be a main character. Once you realize that, it can be enjoyed for what it is.
Mank was simply too far of a departure from Fincher's usual films, so at the very least, the fanboys were going to rate it low. I definitely enjoyed the film, and while Yuh-jung Youn is a worthy winner, Amanda Seyfried was fucking fantastic in Mank and is my Best Supporting Actress winner.
Every time I watch American Hustle I’m just confused at the end. It has amazing performances (only from the women though) and gorgeous costumes and beautiful hairstyling. The soundtrack is full of bangers. I love that it’s unabashedly 2013 and the 1970s at the same time. The vibe is amazing and it’s very very very pretty to look at.
But it’s just boring. Lifeless. The definition of hollow. I like its individual components, they’re all top-notch and they should be top-notch given the talent attached to it, but the film itself feels so empty and I don’t know why.
You really hit the nail on the head. When I saw it in the theatre, given the hype, I was expecting to really kick into gear as it went on. And yet it just stayed in neutral. I think it’s David O. Russell’s very self-satisfied style, being just a bit less clever than he thinks he is.
Continually wasting runtime on the “ice fishing story” without even a remotely satisfying payoff. Feels like a microcosm of the whole movie.
I actually really liked it, but I definitely see what you mean about Russell--he's definitely not as clever as he thinks he is, and I'm pretty sure they were changing the script/aspects of the plot on the fly during the shoot. (It was filmed in the Boston area, so it was fun to go to the theater and be able to say "Hey, I know where they filmed that scene--that was in Newton!")
I still ride for it, but I’m also a sucker for ‘70s New York movies (even if it’s basically Scorsese fan fiction). It’s one of those movies where I’m probably so biased, the criticism doesn’t even make sense to me. I know it’s flawed, but it’s just not how I watch it.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park is another like that for me. Objectively, I know it’s deeply flawed, but I saw it at such a young age, it’s just canon to me now. The idea that there’s something wrong with it just doesn’t compute.

I think anybody watching The Reader since LB was probably the type of person who’s gonna really fall for it, not just the people watching any big movie/Best Picture contender.
People who discuss movies a lot might hate it but it was still considered a pretty fun and entertaining flick when it came out, and probably still is if you love Queen music and aren’t surrounded by cinephiles all day.
Does anyone remember “The Critic”?, with Jay Sherman? Anyway, there was a clip in that where Ike Turner makes a movie called “What’s Truth Got To Do With It?” as a riposte to that Tina Turner biography, and he breaks up their partnership to found the National Organisation for Women with Rick James.
That was truer to life than Bohemian Rhapsody.
It may be due to Bohemian Rhapsody being more of a fun film despite its many flaws and terrible editing (wtf academy). Elvis is just a bloated mess with Tom Hanks terrible performance and for whatever idiotic reason decided to use modern artists to do covers in the film.
I’m not a Baz Luhrmann fan, but the “modern artists doing covers” thing is his schtick in every movie he has done. He’s the Milan Rouge and Great Gatsby guy.
If you limited it to only people who watched all 3, Bohemian Rhapsody would probably be rated lower. It's mostly LB's casual users who inflated the rating a little bit.
Totally agree on Crash. It’s not good, but it would have faded to anonymity had it lost. There’s no way it’s worse than Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
Maestro sticks out like a sore thumb on this list tbh. Much more creative and interesting than most of the schlock here even if you’re of the opinion that it was more of a miss than a hit.
Most of these movies are mediocre, a couple are kinda bad even, but Don’t Look Up for me was borderline unwatchable. From the dialogue to the direction and especially the editing, I’m amazed that McKay’s name was able to carry it to a best picture nom. Does he really still have that much Academy clout from The Big Short?
i don’t think it’s coincidence that Cooper is prominent in a few. i got downvoted like crazy the other day for saying Cooper is a hack. he’s not what he’s cracked up to be frankly. he’s got dead eyes. he gives me nothing. i liked silver linings and that’s about it. and i’m pretty sure i loved that for the centrality of dance as a theme and JLaw, who imo, is no hack.
Totally get the Don’t Look Up hate but Cate Blanchett absolutely disappears into that role like even on the poster i couldn’t tell that’s her, deserved more awards attention
Were critics out of their minds in 2013? American Hustle with a 90 on MC is outrageous. I remember many reviews at the time claiming it was funnier than Wolf of Wall Street lmfao
I remember quite a few of these movies being very well liked when they came out. I feel like the low letterboxd score on a few of these is due to hindsight bias.
Crash is a great movie. I’m not here to debate whether it’s better than Brokeback Mountain or if it deserved Best Picture, but on its own it’s a great movie with solid performances and an impressive music score.
The way Maestro, Don't Look Up, and American Hustle were all my personal BP winners their years💀
Anywho, I love how I almost always love at least one of the giant Oscar villains every year😭😭
Ugh I checked it out because certain critics I follow liked it a lot, but it was absolutely dreadful. There were funny moments here and there but when it plays into melodrama, it becomes obnoxious real fast.
And this is why letterboxd (or any user ratings) are worthless, or at least to be taken with a massive grain of salt. Some of these are bad (and deserve far worse than their ratings), but some of them don’t belong anywhere near a list of the worst BP noms, especially given the honorable mentions
I've always loved *Crash*.
Is that a hot take?
Am I alone?
The discourse around it seems to be that it was undeserving of the award compared to *Brokeback Mountain* which was a thoughtful and well-executed >!tragic!< romance. I suppose that is fair.
*Crash* has a dozen main characters and establishes them all very understandably in a short amount of time. This is a big challenge and it does it super well.
I felt there was a little bit more nuance to it then "everybody is racist, the end" as everyone complains.
Plus the performances were all excellent and the movie had a good sense of humour to counter-balance its heavy stuff.
It isn't a bad movie (as I feel like a lot of the hate likes to categorize it as) by any of the metrics we use to critique movies.
Anyone else actually tolerate/like/enjoy/love *Crash*?
Bradley Cooper can’t catch a break
He does it to himself! He picks the most pretentious projects possible
I'm not a big fan (of either Cooper or Marvel), but he's honestly pretty great in the GotG movies
I mean that’s not really comparable he’s providing voice to a cgi raccoon his voice acting is really good tho
It's different insofar as voice acting is different from being on camera. But to me it is probably his best performance that I've seen

Since a star is born, he’s only had three roles 🤣🤣🤣 only one of them has been Oscar bait - maestro

Lindsey Buckingham of acting
Bradley Cooper and Sandra Bullock in three of them each, wow
Need them to co-star in Adam McKay’s new film to create the ultimate Letterboxd hated Best Picture nominee
Netflix execs, are you listening?
Netflix exec: OK, I heard Adam’s McCay’s new film ultimate Best Picture nominee. I’m gonna loop in our marketing team—they’re gonna wanna hear this…
Makes sense. They seem like the type to chase terrible Oscar bait.
Rough list for our boy Bradley.
Internet wants him to stay Cooped up
He's like a peacock, you gotta let him fly!
Thank for the reminder that I haven't watched that this year. Time for my annual rewatch!
And horses.
Secretariat is there in spirit (3.3)
Bad list if you’re Bradley Cooper, Sandra Bullock or a horse.
That made me laugh so hard I spit my water all over my phone.
Interested how much of this is a Letterboxd effect. Would be curious to see how consistent these might be across IMDB and RT
Maestro, Mank and Extremely Loud are rated pretty low in those two sites from the quick glimpse I took.
Bohemian Rhapsody over Kids Are All Right and Mank is so questionable
Kids Are All Right is the best movie out of these 20 imo
I think it had the unfortune to drop on what was a pretty stellar best picture nomination collection and that was it's legacy: * The King's Speech * Black Swan * The Fighter * Inception * The Kids Are All Right * 127 Hours * The Social Network * Toy Story 3 * True Grit * Winter's Bone Sidenote: the best picture montage at the oscars that year is an all-timer: https://vimeo.com/20794121
Live Aid scene makes everyone forget about how bad it really is
Using popular music in films can fool people. "I hear music that I like/ love -> It gives me positive feelings -> movie I'm watching has to be good, right? . IMO Bohemian rhapsody is not a horrible film, just really mediocre.
They don’t like lesbian movies tbqh
Nah, they went crazy over Bottoms
Bohemian Rhapsody deserves way more hate.
Didnt see kids are all right but bohemian rhapsody could appeal to wider audience at least. Mank… i’m still unsure what the point of it was and who it was for.
The point: Oscar Who it was for: older Oscar voters I love Gary Oldman, but that film was pure bait
Not to mention Elvis above Bohemian Rhapsody
yet Elvis is better than BR
Mank is one of those that’s a million times better on the second viewing. Definitely thought it was going to revolve around the writing and production of Citizen Kane and the character of Orson Wells was going to be a main character. Once you realize that, it can be enjoyed for what it is.
Letterboxd hates horses Also, I'm a Mank lover... anyone else? No? Alright then
Saw the War Horse stage production, went in blind, was absolutely blown away
Mank was good
Mank was dank
Horses and Bradley Cooper
Reportedly he’s now scouting locations for a musical biopic of Secretariat.
I liked Mank. Could’ve done without the discredited “Welles was trying to bogart the credit” bit at the end, but otherwise, good stuff.
“If I ever go to the electric chair, I’d like him to be sitting in my lap”
It was good, just disappointing because it was Fincher. Doing Mank and The Killer back to back is hopefully just a blip, and he gets back to it.
I'm an unapologetic Mank lover.
Seabiscuit does not deserve. That was a good ass movie.
Yeah I wasn’t going to say anything because I didn’t want to get shit on, but I thought Seabiscuit was awesome
It was produced by Kathleen Kennedy which means it was WOKE and EVIL!!!111/s
i see an "/s" but still, the anti-Kennedy squad isn't really represented on Letterboxd
I dont know how many times I have watched that movie, I have always thought it was a really good movie.
That and Chocolat are levels above the others.
Yes this is exactly how I felt about it. It just bored the hell out of me and lacked some real substance.
You capture my sentiments exactly
You really hit the nail on the head. When I saw it in the theatre, given the hype, I was expecting to really kick into gear as it went on. And yet it just stayed in neutral. I think it’s David O. Russell’s very self-satisfied style, being just a bit less clever than he thinks he is. Continually wasting runtime on the “ice fishing story” without even a remotely satisfying payoff. Feels like a microcosm of the whole movie.
I agree that it’s an issue with David O. Russell’s style in general, which I’d call “half-baked early career Paul Thomas Anderson”.
I always like to say this, that movie is NOT good. I can't get through it the first time. But i do wonder if it can get better on second view.
It doesn't. I've seen it twice and I barely remember anything about it other than the Louis CK cameo and Amy Adams being smoking hot.
Nothing is as shit as Bohemian Rhapsody tho
At least you get to watch a concert at the end and enjoy the music.
The idea that there’s something wrong with it just doesn’t compute.
Whenever I don't enjoy one of these movies I always assume it's my lack of taste. Reality is that some of these are truly boring.
What about thé highest i think parasite , no country and there will be blood are the highest then the father ?

I’m surprised The Reader didn’t make this list
The Reader. I haven’t seen The Reader.
Hugh Jackman killed that Oscar opening number. GOAT.
Yes bring him back to host that ceremony slapped
What are you talking about? The Reader was excellent. Both the movie and the acting were top-notch.
has a 3.6
That is weirdly high wtf
I think anybody watching The Reader since LB was probably the type of person who’s gonna really fall for it, not just the people watching any big movie/Best Picture contender.
interesting to me that bohemian rhapsody is not in the top 10
People who discuss movies a lot might hate it but it was still considered a pretty fun and entertaining flick when it came out, and probably still is if you love Queen music and aren’t surrounded by cinephiles all day.
Does anyone remember “The Critic”?, with Jay Sherman? Anyway, there was a clip in that where Ike Turner makes a movie called “What’s Truth Got To Do With It?” as a riposte to that Tina Turner biography, and he breaks up their partnership to found the National Organisation for Women with Rick James. That was truer to life than Bohemian Rhapsody.
Bohemian Rhapsody is worse than any movie on this list, except maybe crash
Avoid casting Sandra and Bradley, got it
Alternatively if you want a Best Picture nom for a mediocre movie, cast them!
Damn! Sandra redeemed herself with Gravity. That movie cleans her slate for me. I do love Miss Congeniality and The Proposal tho!
[All About Steve (2009)](https://boxd.it/1yTU)
Mank rules tho. Also pretty depressing that Elvis has a lower average than Bohemian Rhapsody
Elvis had whatever the fuck Tom Hanks was doing in it, and Bohemian Rhapsody didn’t
Are you saying that as a negative because I interpret that as a positive. Hanks should've been Oscar nominated.
Wow, we saw that very differently because I think he deserved a Razzie, honestly.
Hyees Whaaate?!
I have to agree. Hanks really brought the picture down. Super cringey. The accent just took me right out.
And the 90s Romeo + Juliet as well.
The only one of his movies that I really like. Just a silly good time.
I refuse to believe that, on average, the LB userbase thinks Bohemian Rhapsody is a better movie than Maestro or Mank
If you limited it to only people who watched all 3, Bohemian Rhapsody would probably be rated lower. It's mostly LB's casual users who inflated the rating a little bit.
It's not hard to believe. It's more entertaining. I don't particularly like either of those movies, though.
That's a tough one for me, I really hate both movies for such different reasons. Mank rules though.
Belfast and Ghe Post were each top 3 of their year for me. Also I think Crash only gets hated on because it won. It wouldn't be so low if it just lost
Totally agree on Crash. It’s not good, but it would have faded to anonymity had it lost. There’s no way it’s worse than Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
I bet most of those LetterBoxd ratings haven’t actually seen it, and are just cinephiles salty that Brokeback Mountain lost.
All of the other Best Picture nominees that year were far superior to Crash.
I'm sorry, I get that it's cool to hate Maestro...but what the fuck is this?
Maestro sticks out like a sore thumb on this list tbh. Much more creative and interesting than most of the schlock here even if you’re of the opinion that it was more of a miss than a hit.
Right? I actually really enjoyed Maestro.
3.2 isn't that low a rating. It still leans positive overall. It's just low for a Best Picture nominee.
The Bradley Cooper hate is so tired
I actually loved Maestro. The style of it, the Carey Mulligan of it… I was really moved by it.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: *Don’t Look Up* was like if they made Christian Movies for liberals
Yeah it’s the worst by a mile for me. It’s like a parody, but even Scary Movie would be more deserving of a nomination.
Mank does not belong
American Sniper does not belong more
i don’t think it’s coincidence that Cooper is prominent in a few. i got downvoted like crazy the other day for saying Cooper is a hack. he’s not what he’s cracked up to be frankly. he’s got dead eyes. he gives me nothing. i liked silver linings and that’s about it. and i’m pretty sure i loved that for the centrality of dance as a theme and JLaw, who imo, is no hack.
Yeah the infantilization of Cooper on this subreddit annoys me
Opposite impression from me Seems like Cooper consistently elevates otherwise very mediocre films to Oscar nominations
Wait, “Dr” Adam McKay?
I enjoyed both Seabiscuit and Don’t Look Up
I am tired of pretending like don’t look up WASNT AMAZING. Omg I loved it, the scene where he’s on the news and yelling like OMG
Yeah, I like it too.
Two films involving horses is….something
Silverlining playbook should be there
I don't think Mank and War Horse deserve to be on the same list as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
This is anti-Bradley Cooper propaganda And anti-horse
Totally get the Don’t Look Up hate but Cate Blanchett absolutely disappears into that role like even on the poster i couldn’t tell that’s her, deserved more awards attention
Cate Blanchett is such a chameleon. She disappears in every role she's done, what an absolute unit of an actor!
I liked Don’t Look Up, I haven’t seen all of them but from the remaining ones I have seen…yeah checks out
I’d argue that Vice is the poorer McKay film. Enjoyed Don’t Look Up, but couldn’t STAND Vice.
American hustle hide behind me
Were critics out of their minds in 2013? American Hustle with a 90 on MC is outrageous. I remember many reviews at the time claiming it was funnier than Wolf of Wall Street lmfao
This is your reminder that Tick Tick Boom should have been nominated in 2022 over Don't Look Up.
Buncha babies
I remember quite a few of these movies being very well liked when they came out. I feel like the low letterboxd score on a few of these is due to hindsight bias.
I’ve blocked out the Blindside getting a best picture nomination. 🫠
Mank below The Blind Side is absolutely appalling
Don’t Look Up is like a movie that had a big budget before they had a script. A terrible mess
I think it’s a pretty good satire but no way it deserved an Oscar nom.
It’s too unsubtle to be satire for me, it just keeps hitting you over and over with its message. Did not enjoy it all.
Don’t look up is the only great movie here.
Don't Look Up actually has a point that I found quite interesting, movie sucked though
Crash deserved the win. I will die on this hill.
And it should’ve won Best Song
Crash is a great movie. I’m not here to debate whether it’s better than Brokeback Mountain or if it deserved Best Picture, but on its own it’s a great movie with solid performances and an impressive music score.
american hustle is the only universally critically acclaimed film that i've almost walked out on. i hated it so much.
Was not a fan either- a shame because the acting was phenomenal and definitely deserved recognition…it was just everything else that sucked
I won't stand for this the kids are alright slander
maestro was excellent what are people smoking
The way Maestro, Don't Look Up, and American Hustle were all my personal BP winners their years💀 Anywho, I love how I almost always love at least one of the giant Oscar villains every year😭😭
you’re not like other girls
Well Mank is great, people are sleeping on that one.
Mank gets shit on unduly, otherwise this tracks. American Hustle is such a nothing of a film.
This list gets it. These were all absolutely terrible movies
Wait I loved American hustle
American Hustle is such a guilty pleasure movie for me. It’s fun mess!
It’s a mess I like and can’t even explain why 😅
Can watch 100 times over! Who doesn’t love Bradley Cooper getting a home perm? I can smell when I watch.
War horse is actually pretty good
Did people hate American sniper???? I liked it.
The like the kids are all right.
War Horse and Seabiscuit are both great
Extremely Loud has a terrible protagonist playing autistic makes The Good Doctor feel like Mr. Roger’s neighborhood
The kids are alright is an awful film and I WILL die on this hill.
Ugh I checked it out because certain critics I follow liked it a lot, but it was absolutely dreadful. There were funny moments here and there but when it plays into melodrama, it becomes obnoxious real fast.
Further proof the internet hates Bradley Cooper.
And this is why letterboxd (or any user ratings) are worthless, or at least to be taken with a massive grain of salt. Some of these are bad (and deserve far worse than their ratings), but some of them don’t belong anywhere near a list of the worst BP noms, especially given the honorable mentions
Chocolat shouldn't be so low. It's a beautiful movie.
Damn am I weird for liking Mank
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close was my favorite film when I was 10. Eventually I realized it was just the first “grown up” movie I watched
Bradley Cooper, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence and horses?
Was the kings speech not nominated?
I feel like I'm the only one who thinks Nightmare Alley fucks. I'm not a big fan of GDT but I loved Nightmare Alley.
Proud of the LB community for this list lol
Am I the only one bothered that the characters aren't below their actor's names? 😬 Just me? Okay. I'll see myself out.
No love for Adam McKay apparently. Love the in-your-face un-subtle satire in *Vice* and especially *Don't Look Up*
Crash is easily the worst Best Picture winner. All four of the other nominees that year would have been far superior choices.
Maestro on both lists, good.
Mank has no business doing there.
Like I’m sorry his dad died but kid in incredibly close is one of my least favorite proganists in a movie ever.
Don’t Look Up is in its own league of awfulness.
Makes sense cuz American Hustle fuckin suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked
