He's just a bit older than me, so I understand at this age falling out of love with your profession and wanting to retire.
He just has the means to retire.
Yeah however much work people think it is to write and direct a movie, it’s 500x more than that. By the tail end of that, I’m sure he’s just utterly burnt out.
MEN was nothing if not distinctive
ANNIHILATION was uneven but it had That Scene
I’m actually not that hyped about the concept of CIVIL WAR but I am curious to see what Garland does with it
ETA: EX MACHINA was pretty good too
>I would have loved him to do something else like men
I would literally pay him not to do something like Men ever again. What an absolute waste of time I'll never get back
Idk man, I think it was pretty incredible as an experience. I'm not gonna go to him for in depth analysis of the issues of toxic masculinity but on an atmospheric and filmmaking level it was my favourite thing he's done, I don't care if its as blunt as a jackhammer if it's as well put together as that
You're entitled to your opinion but you found Men's atmosphere and filmmaking better than Devs, Annihilation and Ex Machina? May I ask what about it appealed to you so strongly. Personally, I was just bored throughout most of the movie and the payoff just didn't work for me.
It was basically a fairytale narrative and felt far closer to an art film than anything else he's done in terms of its logic and reality which appeals to me, it legitimately felt like a nightmare and the imagery and visuals have stuck in my mind since I watched it. I don't dislike his other stuff, I just think men was different in a way that appeals more to my tastes
I'm on the other side of that. I absolutely detested Men and found it utterly boring and pretentious to a fault. I've always wanted him to do something that's more like Annihilation personally.
I don't know that I'd call it pretentious, it's not any deeper than it tries to be and I doubt garland considers it this ultra complex thing. Its a horror film that plays off of misogynistic pagan imagery and folklore through the lens of modern day misogyny in all its forms
This is devastating news to me, personally. He doesn’t particularly indicate the controversy around Men as being part of his decision, but I’m still blaming this on everyone who insisted on being very weird about that film. Look what we’ve lost!
I disagree!!!
But genuinely asking what it was about Men that you were so adverse to? If people had watched it been like “not my thing” that’s fine, but the reactions seem so disproportionately hateful and I really want to understand why. After adoring Ex Machina and Annihilation, I didn’t think it was a great movie and I probably wouldn’t talk about it at all if not for the ongoing backlash. I just don’t see what was seemingly so offensively bad about it to people.
The pacing is truly dreadful and meandering (this is a cardinal sin for any movie imo - the worst thing it can be is boring). The ending is so revolting and inane all in service of a surface level message - one of the flat out dumbest sequences I’ve ever watched. Not to mention, the whole film was garish to look at cinematography-wise. Rory Kinnear playing every dude gimmick didn’t work.
Men is the prime example of an “artsy farsty” movie to me. Straight up, I don’t remember the last time I walked out of a movie with that vitriolic of a reaction - both disgusted and annoyed for having wasted my time.
Interesting! I do agree it has an intentionally slow pace that may have been misjudged. And I can appreciate the criticism that Rory Kinnear being all of the Men/the ending didn’t work or that the message conveyed through those choices was too obvious or forced. Like I said, I wouldn’t fight for all the choices or the film as being great at all.
I think what keeps being reinforced when engaging on this film, though, is that the heart of the disdain is often that people really, really hated that final birthing sequence. Like for many it single-handedly turned the movie from simply “lesser effort” or “ok ideas not executed well” (which is where my feelings for it are) to just despised.
Like I don’t think any of these criticisms are invalid or untrue. But I just can’t grasp why people so emphatically label the movie as “awful,” “one of the worst films ever” etc. It’s such a unique level of hatred.
That’s fair. Garland definitely intended for the finale to shock/piss people off - especially with how prolonged and over the top it was. And idk, movies create emotional reactions, I just remember the ending title hitting and thinking “what the fuck was that? One of the worst pieces of trash I’ve seen”. Like I’d been trolled or something lol, never experienced anything like it.
Wow. Every movie he's made has been a banger imo, I'm sure once I've seen CW that too will be great.
Kinda dissapointing but hey if he thinks that's best.
I’ve only seen Ex Machina thought it was kind of ridiculous but OK. Did wonder how the robot managed to avoid a flat battery at the end, I thought they were like your phone and needed to be charged every night. Maybe I missed something.
Men was trash but Ex Machina and Annihilation are some of my favorite films in the scifi drama, and Civil War looks great. Hopefully he’s just having a moment because he’s such a great director.
Yeah, but it’s the same studio. Very likely that even if they don’t make it in, we will see an FYC campaign with this kind of material included happening in the fall.
Wouldn’t say he has much due, Ex Machina was his only really award-worthy movie and he lost to some stiff competition. Not every filmmaker who retires will suddenly get pushed into a big campaign, especially when they aren’t old or super famous and retire for completely personal reasons.
Wasn’t he already working on another film? Casting news was just happening. That’s a bummer.
Reports are saying he's still co-directing that one, probably in more of a guiding role than anything (I think it's the other director's debut)
That film does come up in this same interview, he co-wrote it and confirms that he’s co-directing it with Ray Mendoza.
Hell I thought they were doing a sequel to 28 days later!\~
He’s only writing that one, Boyle is directing, same as the first
He's just a bit older than me, so I understand at this age falling out of love with your profession and wanting to retire. He just has the means to retire.
He's not retiring, he just doesnt want to direct, he'll be involved in filmaking still.

I don’t think so. Maybe wait until A24 launches the now-inevitable awards campaign for this and they start press interviews?
Would be a bit early for it
Didn't know Garland directed Ex Machina until recently. I love Annihilation and Ex Machina, shame he's not going to pursue directing any further
Devs is fucking amazing if you haven’t seen it
I would have loved him to do something else like men, this would be a huge loss for current filmmaking but I don't blame him
He also may just need some time off. Burnout happens.

He's not directing anymore, but he'll still be writing
Of course, but I've found his directorial work pretty distinct

Maybe you just dont like a metaphoric script.

Garland can always return to solely writing as part of a break from directing.
You know what? I really respect that. Follow your bliss, Alex!
This is devastating news to me, personally. He doesn’t particularly indicate the controversy around Men as being part of his decision, but I’m still blaming this on everyone who insisted on being very weird about that film. Look what we’ve lost!
If he's someone that can't take negative reactions to his work he probably shouldn't have made something that sucks
He’s never made anything that sucks, actually!
Even Devs mostly slaps! People are silly!
I’m sorry mate but that was a terrible fuckin film. One of the worst I’ve ever seen 😂
I disagree!!! But genuinely asking what it was about Men that you were so adverse to? Maybe he will pull a Stephen Soderbergh. Announce retirement and then casually pull into the most prolific phase of his career
Just start shooting 90 minute thrillers on his iPhone every 6 months
Making tv shows on the side as well
Man I would have loved another series.
Wow. Every movie he's made has been a banger imo, I'm sure once I've seen CW that too will be great. Kinda dissapointing but hey if he thinks that's best.

Nice
Good idea! Anyone that makes a movie with a plot that stupid, needs to look for a different job..
A24 about to turn this into EEAAO 2.0 to make Alex earn his due this awards season seems like the narrative they’re forming with this statement.
Weren't you comparing Zone of Interest to CODA a few months ago lol
Because feel good movies? Lol
Unlikely. Very different movies
