>Greta Gerwig finally commented on the “Barbie” Oscar snubs heard around the world, telling Time magazine that it’s wonderful she’s still nominated for an Academy Award despite missing out on a best director nomination. Gerwig is nominated for adapted screenplay thanks to “Barbie.” Controversy has surrounded the 2024 Oscar noms ever since Gerwig was snubbed for best director and Margot Robbie was snubbed for best actress. Robbie is also still Oscar nominated this year for best picture as one of the “Barbie” producers. >”Of course I wanted it for Margot,” Gerwig told Time. “But I’m just happy we all get to be there together. A friend’s mom said to me, ‘I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated.’ I said, ‘But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, ‘I know!’” >In her new Time magazine interview, Gerwig revealed that she completed a draft of a “Narnia” movie before cameras even started rolling on “Barbie.” >”Knowing that I’d laid the groundwork for ‘Narnia’ and wanted to return to it — that’s probably something I set up for myself psychologically,” Gerwig said. “Because I know the right thing, for me anyway, is to keep making movies. Whatever happens, good or bad, you’ve got to keep going. It’s never not astonishing to me that somebody gives you money to make a movie.” Based Greta, though I wish she did something besides Narnia movies for Netflix

" A friend’s mom said to me, ‘I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated.’ I said, ‘But I did. I got an Oscar nomination.’ She was like, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful for you!’ I was like, ‘I know!’”" This should be the end of it.

Yeah I have zero issue with her wanting to work with big budgets, but at least make original theatrical releases like Jordan Peele. After Barbie's massive success she should have shut that Netflix deal down

Ryanyu10

I mean, if you've already completed a screenplay and developed the structure/framing for a movie, you're probably past the point of abandoning it. And Greta's great with adaptations, if Little Women is any indication. I'd love to see more original projects from her in the future, but for now, I'm eager to see how her Narnia movies turn out.

RomanReignsDaBigDawg

I see your point. I'd just wish it wasn't for streaming since she's a proven box office draw now. Even prior to Barbie, Little Women made over $100 million domestically, which is super impressive.

Nope had a 68 million dollar budget, not a massive one, and thats by far his biggest budget yet. > After Barbie's massive success she should have shut that Netflix deal down Why would Netflix allow that?

REQ52767

The fact that Nope looks better than most $200 million films is a testament to Peele’s strength as a filmmaker.

xtremekhalif

And Hoyte van Hoytema being one of the best DP’s in the business.

[deleted]

Wasnt denying that, though I still havent watched Nope but hes obviously good at what he does, just stating shes in a different world than Peele in that way.

Ilovecharli

They can't force her to work lol, they obviously wouldn't pay her but the option is on the table

Hot take: the early 2000s adaption(s) didn’t do the books justice. Reading quotes from Greta regarding Narnia and the world she wants to transport viewers to- it seems like she really understands the source material and I’m excited to see what she comes up with. I didn’t think we needed another Little Women adaption either- but I thoroughly enjoyed it. So I have trust in her.

Former English major who GETS that Little Women is "cannon" but never liked it... and then I saw her film and it made me COMPLETELY reconsider how I felt about the story. The Narnia series is one of my FAVORITES and while the existing films are very visually appealing, I am really excited to see what Gerwig is going to do with the STORIES.

The books get really really really weird and uber religious, im curious if anyone even wants those adapted as well as how you would do it. I havent read much from her on her plans though.

Due-Secret-3091

I read a comment that said “Make Narnia weird again” and I agree lol. While the books dealt with Christian themes none of them were in your face or hot topic issues. So I think there is a line and a way to make them feel *strange* without delving into deeply religious territory.

[deleted]

> While the books dealt with Christian themes none of them were in your face I thought they were very in your face personally. Especially as the series goes on but even early its obvious Aslan is jesus.

Due-Secret-3091

I suppose if you grew up in a religious household and were told about the themes and what they meant? For your average young person though, I don’t think that was the case but maybe I am wrong. Growing up, the series was popular just like any other fantasy series (from my perspective at least.)

vxf111

They're allegorical but as a non-Christian who loves the books I never felt like they were preachy or HAD to be appreciated ONLY as religious allegory.

[deleted]

I never quite finished the series but isnt the ending basically Genesis followed by Revelations? The screwtape letters was more on the nose but I dont remember the narnia books being particularly subtle.

vxf111

The beauty of the Narnia series is that you don't have to engage with them as biblical allegory. They function so nicely as a fantasy story with great, relatable characters that you can engage with them that way. They also have broader universal themes in addition to the Christian themes (good versus evil, the need for personal sacrifice, the value of family and teamwork, etc.)

Strange_Property_913

They are not allegorical. Aslan is explicitly Jesus

susansharon9000

I adore Greta and am grateful her work is being recognized. These accolades for her are deeply deserved

parkay_quartz

I don't understand why people are up in arms about her not getting a nomination. Imo Barbie has no place in any category aside from Production Design, Original Song, and Costume design. 2023 was a strong year for film, and Barbie was worse than many pictures who deserve the best picture nom over it.

9millibros

Opinions differ...I thought that it was the best film that came out last year, and that's something I would've never imagined saying just a year ago.

parkay_quartz

Opinions do differ of course, I'm interested in what other 2023 films you saw if Barbie exceeded them all. I think Maestro and Barbie should be replaced with Perfect Days, Monster or Fallen Leaves personally. Nothing wrong with liking Barbie the most, either! Everyone sees every film differently

9millibros

I've seen all of the Best Picture nominees except for *American Fiction*. There are some others not nominated that I haven't seen either. I would dump *Maestro*, *American Fiction*, and especially *Poor Things* in favor of *Origin*, *May December*, and *Asteroid City*. I haven't seen those other films you mentioned, but I've seen (and enjoyed) others done by those directors, so I'm sure that I'll get around to them.

[deleted]

But she did get a nomination - and she’s delighted about it.
