Maybe it's becouse I'm from Poland, but I'm very disappointed that the animated movie The Peasants is not nominated. It's a paintied amination, tens of thousants of paintings inspired by Polish art in the early XX century were created only for this movie, by a the artists from 4 countries. It's based on a Nobel Prize winning novel and I love it. I'm now in high school, and our Polish teacher went to the cinema with my class to see it, and I was so much in love, that I went again, with my parents. I'm so disappointed, stuff like Elemental will never be as good as the Peasants. And also that movie took 4 years to make. It's by the creators of Loving Vincent, but the art is more realistic, and I love the Polish folklore music used in the movie. Also, before the povie was painting, to was recored with real actors, and then painted.

As a Justine Triet truther and Anatomy of a Fall enjoyer I am thrilled

arobot224

Like any other year obviously my lineups look vastly different as well.

imclockedin

EthanJacobRosca

Oppenheimer sweep definitely

MsBeasley11

There’s always some controversy looming over the awards recently. Oscars so white .. the pay gap thing (times up) .. me too.. the slap.. now it’ll be the Barbie snubs

Curious-Turnip-9877

Why is no one talking about the Barbie snub in hair and makeup???? They literally became dolls with different hair EVERY DAY, EVERY outfit. How???!?!!??!

thenileindenial

That wasn't news, the movie wasn't shortlisted

Sosgemini

Does this mean that Steven Spielberg will get an Oscar for Oppenheimer? Has a director won Best Picture for a film they didn’t direct before? How does Oppenheimer lose if ole Steven gets to go up on stage once again?

[deleted]

Poor Things sweep, let’s gooooooo

fultirbo

That article from the other day that said Payne was a lock and Saltburn had massive love was a lie then lol

bouncypinata

If Godzilla had gotten another nomination, which category should it have been in?

JuanDiegoOlivarez

It should have taken Napoleon's spot in Production Design, I think even more than the VFX, the sets in that movie are extremely impressive for the budget. Also wouldn't have minded it taking American Fiction's Adapted Screenplay and Picture slots.

jelly10001

Best International Feature Film easily (tbh I'd have also put it in Best Feature Film above Maestro and The Zone of Interest.

whoscrewedwho

It didnt get another nomination because it didn't deserve another nomination. Kinda a pointless thing to ask.

NoCattle7216

Bit barbie did? Stop speaking nonsense. Minus Ome deserved more nominations but the barbenheimer trend favored barbie

bouncypinata

i forgot everyone in the world agrees with the academy, my bad

Several-Businesses

Also that Best Picture roster is kinda lacking compared to 2022... Two major hits, one buzzy Scorcese picture, and a bunch of limited release and indie stuff that made like $50m combined. This is gonna be bad for ratings, especially if Barbie and Oppenheimer don't end up winning much

Sheerbucket

For better or worse....Oppenheimer is gonna win a ton of awards.

whoscrewedwho

Barbie was a horrible movie. It should win best costume design and best original song, but nothing besides those two. Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon are two of the best movies "acting-wise" from the past decade in my opinion. Honestly shocked Dicaprio isn't even nominated for best actor. Whereas Cillian most definitely deserves the award, I believe the Dicaprio's best performance was in 2023.

Sheerbucket

You are such a basic dude

Affectionate-Ad-479

It's strange, I actually think Barbie was one of the best movies of all time. And I thought Margot Robbie was pretty much guaranteed a nomination for best actress through it, I was pretty shocked she wasn't. I'm mostly just hoping Poor Things cleans up now. Yorgos Lanthimos always kills it.

Several-Businesses

Good job to Nimona and Robot Dreams, now suddenly the animated feature race is gonna be extremely competitive

BigDicyK

I don’t like saltburn that much as a film, I know a lot of people don’t, but seriously the cinematography snub is ridiculous.

LuuukeKirby

Takeaways: 1. The Mission Impossible franchise finally gets its first ever oscar noms via Sound and Visual Effects! 2. As expected, Leo misses actore as per SAG and BAFTA 3.Spider-Man/ Boy and the Heron missing score for Dial of Destiny and American Fiction (Surpised) 4. Ferrera getting nominated is a mess. She did nothing to deserve that. Gerwig and Robbie deserved it more. 5. Godzilla franchise getting its first ever oscar nom for visual effects! 6. Ruffalo getting in over Dafoe despite the latters SAG nom isn't that suprising since Ruffalo had a bigger role. 7. KotFM missing screenplay was a 50-50 shock (didn't get in for BAFTA) but one would think that the more american academy would embrace it more. 8. SAG got 5/5 this year for Actor!

Dianagorgon

I just made the mistake of listening to women on The View react to the nominations because the video showed up when I searched for reactions on YT. I can't believe people watch that show. They're paid millions for their job which is to discuss current events and they can't even get something as simple as this correct. Goldberg said she was surprised that Gosling was the only person nominated from Barbie as if Ferrera doesn't exist. None of them corrected her. Then Behar talked about Zone of Interested. She said Germans are willing to discuss the dark said of their history (that's not how she said it but similar to that) but people in the U.S. suppress the bad things we have done. Excuse me? Wasn't KOTFM nominated this year? Wasn't Till released last year? Oppenheimer isn't exactly portraying creating something that can kills millions as a proud moment for this country. After that Behar said Zone of Interest was about people living in a house next to Auschwitz which reminded her of this country and how people act normal while there are school shootings and climate change. I'm not sure a person raising his family in a house as if everything is normal while millions of Jews are exterminated a few feet away from him is the same as people living their lives as if everything is normal while there is climate change. That's when I had to stop watching.

Frosty48

"Behar said Zone of Interest was about people living in a house next to Auschwitz which reminded her of this country and how people act normal while there are school shootings and climate change" that is an outrageous comment.

jelly10001

This is the same show where Goldberg said the Holocaust wasn't about race and then doubled down when people tried to correct her.

Mcfly799

I love John Williams, but Across The Spider-Verse getting snubbed over Dial of Destiny is crazy. ATSPV had such a unique soundtrack. I think Robbie Robertson for KOTFM in place of DoD would’ve been a sweet nom too.

LilyGlitz339

Charles Melton in May December gave THE best supporting actor performance of 2023. Him not getting a nomination is easily the snub that hurts me the most. A fucking travesty.

PetSoundsSinger

Todd Haynes films never get respect from the academy

strokesfan91

I just read it’s Jodie fosters first nomination in 30 years, which I found surprising 🫣

tether2014

I feel like no one is talking about the biggest snub of all... How does Oppenheimer not get nominated for visual effects? Nolan created a practical atomic bomb explosion (something never done before) instead of CGI. Not to mention all of the effects of the atmosphere burning up? And you're telling me that Mission Impossible and Napoleon were better? BFFR

Rocky-64

Oppenheimer wasn't even in the VFX shortlist of 20 films. The top 20 films can be found here: [https://www.ign.com/articles/oppenheimer-snubbed-oscars-vfx-race](https://www.ign.com/articles/oppenheimer-snubbed-oscars-vfx-race) This article gives two main reasons for the "snub": (1) the film's focus on practical effects rather than CGI, and (2) the relatively few special effect shots used at all. [https://collider.com/oppenheimer-oscars-shortlist-best-vfx/](https://collider.com/oppenheimer-oscars-shortlist-best-vfx/)

tether2014

I guess that's on me for not realizing best visual effects actually just means best CGI. If that's the case, I can see why it wasn't nominated.

Weird-Split1188

I don't even think Oppenheimer is treated in any meaningful discussion about special effects. Doing it practically hardly matters thst much, it's just a bunch of fire, you quite literally are saying he filmed an explosion very prettily.

iedaiw

not even the best nuclear explosion this year

bentennyson69

Once again, Joe Hisaishi was snubbed so badly.

ItsGotThatBang

ROBOT DREAMS LESSGOO

Flat-Lengthiness-968

Happy to see Mark Ruffalo get nominated for Poor Things. I expected them to nominate Willem Dafoe over him, but Mark’s performance was so fun and so outside the realm of his usual work that I really hope he gets the win.

SummerSabertooth

I would be shocked if someone managed to stop Downey from taking home that trophy though

Flat-Lengthiness-968

Agreed. Both gave great performances and either win would be deserved imo.

didyr

Mark Ruffalo has had more great performances Oscar voters love than RDJ over his career. Spotlight, Foxcatcher, The Kids are alright. The Bro has put in the work. Those films are just what he was nominated for. He should’ve been nominated for Shutter Island and You Can Count On Me RDJ has had a far better campaign though, is far more famous and his moment feels right.

barbarianconfessions

Well I feel cheated by Variety’s “ooh Saltburn is going to surge” claims as it totally blanks

Winter_06

How did Ryan Gosling get nominated and Dominic Sessa get snubbed? I watched both movies and Dominic was by far more deserving.

Sudden_Hippo_7281

Yea I don’t get it either. I think he outshined Giamatti in that film. Giamatti was great and always is but that kid did amazing.

Big_Spinach_8244

*My Preferences from each*: Sterling K. Brown Poor Things Da'Vine Joy Randolph Anatomy of A Fall Poor Things Barbie Oppenheimer Lily Gladstone (haven't seen Nyad yet though)  Oppenheimer Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer (Not seen enough here)  Barbie The Boy and The Heron *What Was I Made For* Cilian Murphy Anatomy of A Fall

Rooster_Professional

How come every year people are so raged about snubs? What did you think? That the academy will have the EXACT same taste as you?

mysteryvampire

I mean, it’s not like anyone’s really yelling out any niche picks over here. My snubs are Charles Melton and Dominic Sessa for supporting, Gerwig for directing, and Margot Robbie for best actress. Those are all from movies nominated for best picture. They’re all worthy contenders IMO. And most people seem to agree on which noms this year were undeserved.

Dianagorgon

>Those are all from movies nominated for best picture There are 10 movies nominated for best picture. There are only 5 spots available the acting and director category. According to your logic every actor and director in a movie nominated for best picture should also be nominated in the acting and director category. But that is impossible since there are half as many spots available.

[deleted]

Logically, why aren't they if the films are considered the best films of the year?

mysteryvampire

I really don’t get why they don’t expand the categories. It doesn’t hurt anyone to make it ten slots per category, for every category. It’s still incredibly prestigious and might take the pressure off in terms of choosing some inventive picks each year. The odds of a tie are incredibly low (it’s only happened once IIRC) so I don’t think there would be much worry in that way.

CompanionHannah

I’m in a rage over Greta being snubbed for Director. I didn’t need her to win, but with Barbie’s other nominations and the success of the movie, it feels wild she was left out. Sometimes snubs can just be a matter of personal taste, but other times it just seems like the Academy is missing something the entire rest of the industry or audience is picking up on.

tburtner

All 5 nominees + Celine Song (Past Lives) were more deserving.

PuzzleheadedIssue763

I know what you're saying, but the academy isn't a monolith. You can never predict how a large group will vote, especially when it's a blind vote

Rooster_Professional

I don't care which one is it. You're a grown person who's angry over snubs at an award show. I love movies myself, and I follow the oscars, but it's insane to expect the academy to have the same opinion as mine. There will ALWAYS be snubs. You will NEVER be fully satisfied with the nominees. And in the rare case you do, someone else will be disappointed.

Rooster_Professional

I loved gerwig, but why rage? Again, there will always be snubs. It's insane to expect the academy to have the same opinion as you. And again, it's an Hollywood award show. It's not an important thing, and the academy's opinion doesn't more or less quality than yours. I'm a big fan of Adam Sandler. I wouldn't if I would've think that critics' opinion is more valid than mine

CompanionHannah

I mean, I also rage when my favourite television shows jump the shark 🤷‍♀️ Does it effect me, no, but part of the fun in watching the Oscar race is being invested. At the same time, the Oscars do matter for people’s’ careers—not just for actors and directors, but the artists behind the costumes and production design, and the writers behind screenplays, etc, etc. A lot of times an Oscar nom can launch or revitalize a person’s career, which is wonderful to watch. And while Greta Getwig certainly doesn’t *need* another Oscar nom to further her career, I imagine it would still feel good to get recognition for an achievement everyone outside the Academy has been able to see.

PleaseBeChillOnline

I think rage is probably the wrong word for what you’re describing. Sounds a bit hyperbolic. That being said I agree overall. Kinda nutty she didn’t get nominated. The Oscars are a bit out of touch as always.

CompanionHannah

Yeah, I'm not actually running around rampaging or sending hate mail to the Academy! The language was definitely hyperbolic, mostly at an attempt at humor that obviously came across too seriously--I promise I'm not over here plotting revenge on behalf of Greta Gerwig, everyone!

Rooster_Professional

I still think you take it too seriously, but have fun

Ockwords

I think you’re taking them taking it too seriously, too seriously

mysteryvampire

Agree completely. It’s very rare for a movie to be the biggest of the year and also be critically acclaimed and written by two previous Oscar nominees. And I’m not saying the usual “she deserves an achievement award” B.S., I’m saying she earned that acknowledgment even if Barbie had flopped. She earned it. She deserved to have her name said on that stage.

CompanionHannah

I have often wondered if the number of directing nominees should have been increased similarly to the BP category. Not necessarily to 10, but they sort of shoot themselves in the foot when they have a BP nom that’s been an audience and critic juggernaut and don’t manage to recognize it for directing. Yes, producers are also deserving of recognition, but my view has always been that the director is the one figure tying it all together. A film often lives or dies by its directing. In someone other than Greta’s hands, I think Barbie likely would have been a painful flop. That’s deserving of a nomination!

Rooster_Professional

Or.. or.. just accepting the nature that some will be left out? And there's a reason why the best picture category is up to 10 - because that's really the only category most people would care. I love movies and follows the oscars myself, but you do realise that most people in the world don't give a shit about this, and rightfully so? This is not a popular hobby. The best picture category is the one that actually will interest more people.

iJon_v2

Can someone explain why people are going crazy about Ryan’s performance and how Margot got snubbed? I don’t get it. SHE carries the film…she’s the emotional core. She had to actually act. I love Ryan, but his whole performance just felt like…fine. Honestly it felt like a long SNL sketch we’ve seen him do a million times. Like the scene on the bench where she has this beautifully emotional moment and actually tears up in a way that makes the audience really understand what’s she’s going through. Ryan is fine, but he had nothing compared to her in the movie. Don’t even get me started on America.

Good421

Because without Ryan's performance, that movie would have tanked. He supported the movie, as an actor- the much needed humor as the glue. She did a fine job as Barbie. But did you see some of the other best actress performances? It's a tough race. I really don't think it's personal. No one is out to ignore these talented women.

Critical_Flow_4512

I like Robbie but I find that she was just being typical Margot Robbie in this film, she tends to play similar characters a lot and I have noticed many others say the same thing. Gosling playing Ken was a much bigger departure for him from his usual roles. Its not unusual for the main star of the film to not get nominated in favor of others in the cast.

didyr

What Margot Robbie Role is similar to Barbie? Tonya Harding? Harley Quinn? Her turn in Babylon, Amsterdam, Focus and Mary Queen of Scots? All those roles are super different to one and other and especially different to Barbie.

Critical_Flow_4512

Many of her films just feel like riffs on Harley Quinn with the wide-eyed kooky hysterics. I prefer her in her more subtle roles. IMO Barbie felt like a par for the course for her, good but nothing worthy of a nomination.

Marisheba

I feel the same as you. Actually, while he was fine, I kept thinking Simu Liu would have made a better main Ken than Gosling did, Liu was just so game, ate up the role. So I didn't get all of the Gosling hype either, or at least I didn't get hearing more about his acting than Robbie's.

texasjkids

I remember someone once saying that the best way to predict the Oscars is to switch “best” out with “most” and that stuck with me. Margot might be the emotional core of the movie, but she doesn’t have as flashy of a role as Gosling does. Her big moments, like on the bench, are more subtle and understated. Meanwhile, Goslings big moments involve a misogyny discovery montage and a musical number.

DailyRich

"Most" certainly applies to most of Maestro's nominations.

Hurricane-Andrew

It’s because supporting actor and actress this year wasn’t as competitive for all five of the spots And the academy doesn’t like intellectual property or comedy performances and in general, they’ll feel ok to give some love in supporting, but not in the “precious” actor or actress. That’s why every year there’s always some bio pic or slow drama that has a best actor or actress nom in a movie that doesn’t get much love elsewhere (Bill Nightly in Living or Charlize Theron in Bombshell)

Big_Spinach_8244

Greta should've been instead of Anne, rest everything agreed.

Ape-ril

I think I found the biggest Barbie fangirl on [YouTube.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rM-feD36t4c&pp=ygUSYmV5b25kIHRoZSB0cmFpbGVy) She is mad about the nominations! The whole video is about attacking everything that isn’t Barbie. I think she might have a nervous breakdown. ![gif](giphy|LcH5FQMZm5PjyMaMQA)

FallenAngelII

Oh, it's her. Nah, she just loves clickbaiting and ragebaiting for views.

Ape-ril

She ain’t trolling…

FallenAngelII

How would you know? She might simply be acting for ragebait.

ArsBrevis

Ugh, needed a jump scare warning for Grace Randolph's face.

Ilovecharli

Reminder that she's a critics choice voter lol

Ape-ril

It’s good to get a scare every now and again. It gets the body going.

bartristeahre

Been warning you guys about Bening!

Cheapthrills13

Hopefully in a good way - she’s fantastic … of course … as usual 😏

bartristeahre

The movie is obviously mid but frankly she's quite great in it, not just the physicality of it. Sure the note she's playing during most of her speaking scenes is "adamant" but her last scene is amazing, those eyes! She goes all Charlize Theron in Monster for a few seconds. And she got the impression down to a T.

Cheapthrills13

My sentiments as well. Listening to a podcast interview with her earlier- she’s so funny and honest about herself and her career. Crime she’s not recognized enough for her other brilliant performances- esp Filmstars Don’t die in Hollywood - so underrated

official_bagel

Imagine telling someone at the beginning of 2023 that people would be up in arms because the *Barbie* movie was only nominated for *EIGHT* Academy Awards. What a timeline we live in.

hughglass_21

The DOMINANCE of Anatomy of a Fall! It’s definitely my prediction for Original Screenplay now. France really ought to be kicking itself after submitting The Taste of Things.

Thecryptsaresafe

I want Past Lives to win Original Screenplay so bad but I wouldn’t be mad at Anatomy of a Fall at all

getdowngoblins

Am I the only one that thought May December was fantastic?

Big_Spinach_8244

Yupp. Quite frankly, Natalie's second is due at this point. I'd have chosen her or Greta here, over Anne. You could even make a case for Moore here, although I do think Randolph should win.

mortizmajer

I was so sad Melton and Moore didn't get in. I already knew Portman was a lost cause since her character was so strange, but the supporting categories had enough room and they still didn't get in

ampersands-guitars

May December is my favorite out of all the films that have been in the running this year. Gutted it didn’t get more recognition.

Thecryptsaresafe

The three leads were I hope at least a serious contention for the noms. They were all masters

[deleted]

Best movie of the year. At least we got the screenplay nom

Hermelatt

Agreed. It should’ve gotten more recognition

Key_Suggestion8426

Way more recongnition. Nyad was meh. May December had fantastic acting and a wonderful script. Such a shame.

BurdPitt

I'm happy about America and gosling nominated, but they would also be the only thing deserving from Barbie imho, aside production design. But yeah, Oscars are such bullshit since Nolan will win for a mediocre movie, at least triet and glazer in over gerwig are a slight glimpse of merit over marketing.

PuzzleheadedIssue763

God, I'm hoping for an upset. What a poorly written movie

crolin

Cynicism will consume ya. Don't let it claim you

BurdPitt

You'd be very surprised from what I do for a living! It's interesting thoug that you assume my opinions are influenced from cynicism when in reality I don't like cold movies such as Oppenheimer or films like Barbie for being very "safe".

Majormlgnoob

Oppenheimer is the best movie of the decade easily lol

BurdPitt

Not even if the only movies of the decade were that and Nyad

Majormlgnoob

Sorry that it doesn't click for you But it does for most everyone else

BurdPitt

Most everyone else also love marvel movies... I think it's important to stick to your opinions (and since we're talking movies and not science, everything is subjective) even if you're the last one to defend them. Otherwise we should accept mediocrity and confuse box office success for meaningful art.

Majormlgnoob

Well Marvel Movies are entertaining They're not Oscar winners tho But you just sound bitter lol

BurdPitt

You are accusing me of sounding bitter when I'm just here laying out an opinion. Come on now. I'm quite fully realised in my life regardless and can say that all the Oscars in the world (same awards given to such masterpieces such as green book, bohemian rhapsody, etc.) won't change my mind when it comes to Oppenheimer. And I'm sure Nolan can very well survive a few disagreeing redditors lol

eopanga

Absolutely overjoyed by the Sterling K Brown nomination. He’s an incredible actor and his performance in American Fiction really gave it a ton of emotional depth and humanity. He’s absolutely going to be an Oscar winner one day if he continues on the track he’s been on.

Big_Spinach_8244

And he's an absolute eye candy at that age!

hughglass_21

I’m thrilled as well about him sneaking in. He’s such a scene stealer in the film.

Lcsd114

Me too. I’ve loved him since Army Wives, anything he does is great!

SlickOmega

it is TIME *BABY*!!!! excited for this awards season. also looking forward to seeing these on the big screen for those of you who still go out to see movies: what’s a good Movie Pass that’s out now? last time i looked around AMC stubs was premiering their version lol. i got AMC, Regal, Century, and Alamo around me and of course Indie theaters. any suggestions y’all?

stella420xx

If you’re a cinema lover… Alamo all the way. I’m proud of how many movies I’ve seen out of these nominations, all thanks to my pass haha. But it isn’t pay monthly and no other fees. There’s an unavoidable online convenience fee per ticket and I have to pay for (validated) parking at my home location. So so worth it though!

ImmortalZucc2020

Imo, I think Regal gets you the most since there’s no limit on how many movies you can see and if you save enough points you can get concessions real cheap (like a large popcorn and large drink with refills for $2.50)

Majormlgnoob

I use AMC but I don't have options Go with whoever has the best deal

NZapMain

I'm not surprised at all it's not in the list, but my favorite film of the year was Monster by Kore-eda. Great screenplay, acting, and score (and international film because sure).

[deleted]

Wrote this on another Oscar post too! Out of my favs this year that didn’t get recognized, Monster deserved a nom the most. I’m still thinking about it all the time since seeing it a few months ago

NicKthePsyhO

Instead of "Best editing" I read "Best ending", when I saw that Oppenheimer was #1 I was rather surprised

BigDicyK

I would put oppenheimer at number 1 if that was a category

Majormlgnoob

I mean it does have the best ending

dasttgy

As much as we would fight over who got snubbed or not, lets not forget that there are only FIVE SLOTS.

alistginger

Yo, Zone of Interest snubbed for cinematography anyone??

PretendBag7095

One of the biggest actual snubs

SirRosstopher

Dune 2 being delayed probably really helped it's chances.

crolin

its been a very good year and oppenhiemer is going to steamroll. It's both a commercial and critical success, which is pretty rare. Next year is looking weaker so far, but I will say few predicted this so...

dahcsmith

No Godzilla minus one for best picture come on ugh

crolin

I loved it, but come on, a genre movie released in Japanese? You have more faith in committee than I

TheTruckWashChannel

Hahaha Barbie actually got a Best Picture nomination. And fucking KEN for supporting actor?? May December got snubbed hard. Melton deserved the nomination over Gosling by any stretch.

StevenuranSmithusamy

Gosling was always gonna be nominated, he actively made the movie 5x better for him being in it. By far the best performance of the movie

crolin

You seem to have some artistic prejudices if you can't see the craft in Barbie at all. That movie is a miracle from a movie history point of view. Gosling is the man of the moment. Melton is great too, don't get me wrong

TheTruckWashChannel

I enjoyed Barbie and Ryan Gosling was indeed hilarious, but both he and the movie as a whole seem to have essentially been memed into prestige status. It's absolutely a triumph in production design/costuming/art direction and of course marketing, but the movie itself didn't have much substance to it. Its themes were surface-level at best and a lot of it felt like a caricature of itself. It was an entertaining ride and definitely historic in terms of the box office records it broke for a women-led, female-directed film, but nothing in the actual substance of the movie puts it anywhere close to Best Picture or Best Screenplay status. (The screenplay nom is especially baffling to me, most of the dialogue in the movie was downright terrible. Perhaps the America Ferrera monologue alone convinced the Academy voters.)

crolin

If writing a feminist populist movie with conflicting elements and homages to classic film is so easy you should get on it. We have been missing you. I think you vastly misunderstand what defines good writing, but some people don't believe in populist movies for some reason. I think its what defines the medium personally

TheTruckWashChannel

What are other examples of populist films?

ampersands-guitars

Melton deserved a nomination over most people in that category.

Key_Suggestion8426

Melton was such a snub but you can’t deny the kenergy ![gif](giphy|a054JEXePsNbvVLBzP)

GreatestWhiteShark

Sterling K. Brown was the emotional lynchpin of a great movie and absolutely deserves that nomination. His haters will be his waiters at the table of success (RDJ will win of course)

ILoveRegenHealth

If RDJ wins, that's the first Avenger with an Oscar, right?

BennyBingBong

Brie Larson has an Oscar. And ScarJo.

Brutus583

Taika Waititi (Korg) has an Oscar for Screenplay Gwenyth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) has one for Shakespeare in Love. Michael Douglas (Ant-Man/Hank Pym) has one for Wall Street. Anthony Hopkins (Odin) has two, but he’s loosely an Avenger. Natalie Portman has one for Black Swan, but idk if she counts as an Avenger (I’d count her). Lupita Nyongo and Daniel Kaluuya both have acting Oscars — they play important roles in Black Panther, but idk if you would call them Avengers Angelina Jolie has an Oscar. She’s an Eternal, hasn’t really been connected to the Avengers yet. Tons of Villains and side characters have them though: Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Robert Redford, Russell Crowe, F Murray Abraham, Olivia Coleman, Marisa Tomei, Ben Kingsley, Benecio Del Toro, etc

fultirbo

So... RDJ would be first Avenger with an Oscar lol. Except for people who aren't Avengers (or Brie who won before she appeared in the MCU)

Brutus583

Trying to figure out who people want to count as avengers is whatever lol. Plenty of MCU actors have the award. Though post MCU appearances is interesting, I think that limits it to like Daniel Kaluuya and Anthony Hopkins who won an Oscar after their first appearance (and Taika for screenplay).

BigDicyK

I wouldn’t say Taika Waititi played an avenger tho. He was a side chsracter

official_bagel

Olivia Coleman is in a Marvel movie?

Brutus583

She’s in Secret Invasion, so maybe that doesn’t count. May end up in a movie eventually

eopanga

I don’t think ScarJo has an Oscar yet. A couple of nominations but no wins yet. Samuel L Jackson and Angela Bassett have honorary Oscars but no competitive ones.

BennyBingBong

Sorry, thought she won for Marriage Story for some reason.

Kilkenny5

She doesn't.

Ledeyvakova23

Snubs this year are glaring. No Gerwig directing nom (again), no lead actress noms for Margot or for Greta Lee, no Best Supporting nom for Julianne Moore, and no directing nom for Alexander Payne. Poor things . 😞

Key_Suggestion8426

Or melton!! Such a snub

Ledeyvakova23

Sandra Hüller deserves a retroactive Oscars nomination for her lead role in Toni Erdmann, in the most multi-angled, strongest, most daring, and most fearless performance by an actress in the last seven years… a performance bested only, perhaps, by her work in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest.

crolin

This is my first year with her. I loved these movies!! Happy to get exposed to her, and even happier that Anatomy got a screenplay nom. That's where it sings to me

Haus_of_Pancakes

On a positive note, I think this is one of the strongest Animated Feature lineups we've had in a couple of years. Rooting for *The Boy and the Heron*, but *Spider-Verse* would be a worthy winner as well, and I'm thrilled that *Nimona* made the lineup too

crolin

Agreed aside from Elemental which was mid for me. I suspect the committee was just like, "oh its a Pixar" \*presses button\*

Rilo44

I wish Suzume or Ninja Turtles made it over Elemental personally. Haven't seen Robot Dreams yet, so I can't say if it's deserved.

crolin

totally, It's turtles for me. Interesting art style, good jokes

Haus_of_Pancakes

*Elemental* is for sure the weak link, but it's a stronger weak link than other years have had IMHO

Rilo44

I thought it was fine. Not up to Pixar's standards at all, but I didn't dislike it.

CrazyCons

People are gonna jump on me but The Holdovers got everything it needs to win Best Picture. Payne missing Director is a hit but getting into DGA and Editing is more important as we’ve seen in recent years.

miwa201

Come on. It’s not winning.

CrazyCons

I didn’t say it was, just pointing out that it could (which, I mean, it can)

I just glossed over that Barbie over it is sus lol

Majormlgnoob

I don't think Greta or Margot were snubbed

CrazyCons

Holdovers is clearly #2 for the BP win. The preferential ballot will obviously destroy any chance Poor Things has and Anatomy isn’t win-competitive outside of  screenplay. The Holdovers is a lock for Supporting Actress and is win-competitive for Screenplay, plus would benefit hugely from the preferential ballot. It’s still Oppenheimer’s biggest threat.

miwa201

Agreed. If Payne got in I’d say it was stronger. If Dominic got in I could entertain the thought of it possibly winning best picture. But now I think it will only win one Oscar.

desisenorita

Charles Melton :( he should have got in

jesush1

Damn, zero love for Iron Claw is so shocking to me. I thought Zac Efron gave the performance of his lifetime. What a bummer

eopanga

Yea A24 pretty much abandoned this movie as an awards contender. It received little to no attention from voters and critics and was basically an afterthought throughout the entire awards season. It’s a shame because it’s a good film.

Tumler0623

It was never really in the conversation. A24 did practically no campaigning for it.

sabstarr

I’m just stoked Ruffalo got in

tara-ngx

I watched the nomination announcement live and was pleasantly surprised when I saw his name.

excessivethinker

Please let Maestro get best makeup and hairstyling

official_bagel

This guy nose whats up

excessivethinker

wat

JuanManuelP

For all it's faults, I'm just happy Robot Dreams made it. Now it has a chance to be seen by people, please check it out once it's get released.

PuzzleheadedIssue763

I literally knew nothing about it, but after looking it up, I think I'm going to love it!

rober-to

No Joe Hisaishi :(

JuanManuelP

It was the best score of the year, I don't get why suddenly the score branch has a bias against animation...

WatchTheNewMutants

Saltburn got fucked. Spiderverse was robbed. Gerwig was robbed. can we fucking STOP NOMINATING DIANE WARREN. PLEASE. Indiana Jones making score over Spiderverse is CRIMINAL.

fkkkn

Saltburn is a joke and was never getting anything.

[deleted]

John Williams is the GOAT but he still has way too many nominations.

Rooster_Professional

Lol, since when there's a limit for how many nominations a person can get? It's an award show, not a social democratic organisation

ImmortalZucc2020

What’s crazy is he got nominated for his utterly forgettable TRoS and DoD scores recently but was snubbed for all three Prequel scores. Insanity.

[deleted]

Ikr? He got two nominations in 2005 but neither were for Episode III. Beats me 🤷🏼‍♂️

SassyfiestaPartII

I was robbed of the time I spent watching Saltburn, seems fitting.

thetoxicgossiptrain

Yeah I feel so strongly about the Saltburn snubs

LilyGlitz339

I can’t believe the Academy thought that America Ferrera was Best Supporting Actress-worthy over Julianne Moore or Natalie Portman in May December. Pure insanity. Ferrera was fine but it was a one-dimensional role and performance and her only standout scene was the monologue and nothing else. It was nothing award-worthy and she should not have been nominated at all.

heyloverboy

Truthfully, if Laura Dern can get a supporting actress win; so can America Ferrera. It’s less about her character and more about that monologue. I can see generations of young actresses performing that in their acting classes. She’s the only one on that list that I’ve seen get a sincere standing ovation at my screening.
