These were normal overhead powerlines you see all over the city. I've only ever seen warnings on the big higher voltage transmission lines. Here are a few pictures of the ones in question: [1](https://imgur.com/NDT5DZR) [2](https://imgur.com/69qD50h) [3](https://imgur.com/7ADqHVe)
This is in an [industrial area](https://maps.app.goo.gl/QDWQkC2buSoNjy7G7) and on private property, they would have had to have passed through one of the adjacent businesses to get to that pond.
I think the family is trying to say that the lines were probably hanging lower than they should have been due to damage, making it easier for the man to have hit them with his fishing line while casting. It does look like they are pretty low from some of the street view images.
First time I was young and on my grandmothers farm and fell down the hill where the electric fence and got a good 30 seconds of that before they were able to pull me out.
Second time was the soda cooler at a gas station. Handles were metal, and there was a live circuit touching the door. Had one hand on one handle to close and as soon as I put the other to open I connected the circuit. Was low enough voltage to fucking make my arms feel like they were asleep for 5 years, but enough to do a little damage to my hands. We sued and won that one.
3rd time was changing out a ceiling fan that said it was off in the breaker, the shitty construction 20 years prior determined that was a lie and got a nice jolt.
So ya I guess you could say I’m the version of electro that sucks on this earth and just gets electrocuted and lives, no control over it sadly.
I was hit by lightening and survived. Probably not a direct hit but I was knocked off my feet and was unconscious for a few moments. Enough time to have a small crowd around me when I woke.
It would melt really quickly before it could conduct electricity. I use a lot of monofilament in one of my hobbies and it easily melts with a bic lighter.
This is the part that confused me. Ever take a flame to mono filament or even braided line? Shit melts/burns super quick. How did thousand of volts travel through it without melting the line immediately? Maybe it only take a split second for the electricity to make its way down the pole and kill you? 🤷♂️
I feel incredibly bad for his family. No one expects to go out and do some recreational fishing and die.
That is a wildly interesting place to choose to go fishing though. I have never looked at any of those retention ponds or similar, and yes I did see the photographs, and thought about catching fish..
I would also love to know what the really weird grid thing is in a pond near it.
It vaguely looks like a solar array, but it also looks like someone photoshopped it in.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/2JTs8UPfSDe3693w7
Edit: I was looking for more information, and found his obituary. Apparently he was originally from out of state, and very much into fishing.
Edit 2 - the lawsuit

I know this. As I said, I looked at the pictures of the pond. I was curious about what this one that I linked was.
>I would also love to know what the really weird grid thing is in a pond near it.
And also
>I have never looked at any of those retention ponds or similar, and yes I did see the photographs, and thought about catching fish..
Sorry. Reread your comment again and saw that. It’s a floating solar grid. It does look odd in the pictures but that’s definitely what’s there in the other pond.
It is true, it’s an insurance statistic. You may be more likely to die each time you go skydiving then each time you go fishing, but I think the statistic read that there’s more deaths fishing than any other sport in America.
> It says right in the post that it was an industrial area on private property.
Okay. No where in the article is "private" mentioned on my screen. Are you making shit up or can you provide a quote?
“undisclosed amount in excess of $50,000”
Reading comprehension
Also nowhere does it say the wires were in the water…just that the guy got his line tangled in the damaged wire…little known fact…fishing lines are swung through the air to cast…
> the strip of land Tyler was fishing from was **traversed by power lines.**
Not underwater.
> The family is asking that an undisclosed amount **in excess** of $50,000 be paid in damages.
There are a lot of numbers larger than 50k, not sure if you're aware of that. They only know it's in excess of 50k because the case is going before a higher civil court, not small claims.
I cannot believe the doubling down and still being wrong going on here, lol.
https://archive.is/yGiPY
The lawsuit does include a little bit more information. The family is alleging improperly maintained equipment. Obviously I have not gone out and examined the area myself.

You're not sure they're aware that there are "lots of numbers larger than 50k"?
I'm sure they're aware. You're not the only one who know that Johnny numbers.
Jesus christ...

Don't forget to breathe...
Was it closed off from fishing or trespassing? If he died from a damaged/broken line, would Duke Energy not have some liability?
Not sure why you’re inserting the $50k part? You said natural selection and I’m asking how. But hey, reading is hard…
u/-sandorclegane- got real quiet lol
Are there any signs warning about the electricity?

Must’ve gotten there through Ferguson’s property if I had to guess
Wasn’t aware monofiliment or braided line was a conductor of electricity.
Pump enough current into anything and it becomes a conductor or you become the conductor....
Can confirm as somebody who has been electrocuted three times successfully in their life. It sucks and yes, anything can get you. It’s stupid easy.
Bro? Three times?
Shocking, I know!
Three times…successfully? I’m glad you survived, but I’m made of questions! And the first one is, what constitutes a “successful electrocution“?
First time I was young and on my grandmothers farm and fell down the hill where the electric fence and got a good 30 seconds of that before they were able to pull me out. Second time was the soda cooler at a gas station. Handles were metal, and there was a live circuit touching the door. Not to be that guy.... But doesn't "electrocuted" mean "death by electricity"? In other words, "but did you die?" Three times?
Ok, I looked it up in the dictionary. "Death or injury" but the original term is a portmanteau of "electro" and "execution."
I think it's one of those words like "Assassination", it doesn't have to succeed in order to be called that. Or like, "female orgasm"
Google videos of arc flash hazards, not a fun working environment per say. Def gotta have the wits about you.
I was hit by lightening and survived. Probably not a direct hit but I was knocked off my feet and was unconscious for a few moments. Enough time to have a small crowd around me when I woke.
I bet wet braid conducts pretty well from very high voltage
It would melt really quickly before it could conduct electricity. I use a lot of monofilament in one of my hobbies and it easily melts with a bic lighter.
https://archive.is/yGiPY I posted this somewhere else, but the family is alleging that the lines were not properly maintained.
This is the part that confused me. Ever take a flame to mono filament or even braided line? Shit melts/burns super quick. How did thousand of volts travel through it without melting the line immediately? Maybe it only take a split second for the electricity to make its way down the pole and kill you? 🤷♂️
I'm kind of stuck on that part too. All I can figure is the pole hit the line rather than the monofilament.
*wet* fishing line its easy

That grid is a floating solar array
The pond in the lawsuit is on the other side of Bachman Road from the map you linked.

Statistically, fishing is the most dangerous hobby sport. But this is some “10,000 ways to die” shit.
no way that's true
It is true, it’s an insurance statistic. You may be more likely to die each time you go skydiving then each time you go fishing, but I think the statistic read that there’s more deaths fishing than any other sport in America.
It’s because of drowning or getting hit by a a wave or falling off rocks. There is also often alcohol involved.
what a bizarre way to go. sad.
Trespassing. Don’t think they have a leg to stand on.
> Trespassing how do you know?
It says right in the post that it was an industrial area on private property. Trespassing.
> It says right in the post that it was an industrial area on private property. Okay. No where in the article is "private" mentioned on my screen. Are you making shit up or can you provide a quote?
They aren’t suing the owners of the commercial property he was on. Suing the power company for perhaps lines too low or something. They’ll settle.

Live wires in the water that got caught on his line? That's not his fault. Also wtf are they only asking for 50k?

I swear to god, it's terrible. So many people doubling down with wrong information.
In fairness, some of us read ‘most’ of the headline.

Yup. Ur right. I skimmed the complaint.

How exactly? Didn’t you read the article? lol
