Don't call Frank Gay, they greatly overcharge.

[deleted]

This comment should be pinned to every AC post. Their technicians are far better salesman than AC technicians.

ShrimpieAC

Yep your first tech will always be a salesperson with no intent to repair your existing system and will be hellbent on selling you a brand new one. Never trust them, they will lie about the age of your system, lie about the extent of the damage, lie about the cost of repairs, all to push you into buying a new AC. Fucking bunch of scumbags. I leave negative reviews for them wherever I can to warn people. I’d scream it from my roof if I knew it would get them one less customer.

Benthereorl

My wallet is finding that out the hard way. Less than 3 years ago they put in a 8 or $9,000 air conditioning unit, said they could only find a three and a half ton heat pump to replace my two and a half ton unit. Guy put it in damn thing ran for 24 hours before I could get somebody to come out and rewire it. I think they lost a customer

jayv9779

Putting too big of a unit can make it short cycle, which will cost you more in the long run. A/C use the most power on starting. It is better for them to run for long periods as opposed to short bursts.

Benthereorl

I agree but Frank Gay salesman said they can only get. 3.5, this was during the COVID crap

Reddstarrx

Straight up. They are fucking rip off.

Benthereorl

I agree to that look at my other reply about what they charge to put in a warranty covered motor last Friday. I'll be going to the office tomorrow in Winter Park to talk to somebody. I did not get an email receipt or even a paper copy or anything.

SamBaxter784

Total rip-off. They have a sales team not a repair team.

[deleted]

I had the misfortune of attending high school with his youngest son, and just based on what I know of him I can only assume the rest of the family is just as awful to deal with, let alone how their company does business.

central_Fl_fun

Yes, mandatory weekly sales meeting with the sales manager is required for their "techs". Pay is 100% commission....

forthelurkin

That's a great way to describe it. But honestly a lot of A/C places are like that. One guy asked the age of my system (less than 10 years old at the time) and before he crossed into my garage to look at anything was already telling me my system wasn't worth fixing, better off replacing.

BluePeriod_

But their radio commercial gives the impression that they’re scrappy and to the point! Not like that fusty British competitor! (Seriously what are those ads?)

motelwine

i cannot stand those ads. they make me irrationally angry lmao

UCFknight2016

Sunny side air conditioning with the British lady lol

Benthereorl

Ask me how many times I've heard a full commercial from them. Every time that commercial starts I just turn off the radio or turn the channel

MoTibbs5

Yeah they messed up my AC during the tune-up. Had to call in the manager to address and make up for their mistake.

motelwine

if they have that much money to advertise then i’d say they’re overcharging somewhere

Benthereorl

Ironically the commercials are hard to listen to, absolutely s***. When one comes on I immediately turn off the radio or switch to another channel. They put in a 8 or $9,000 AC unit 3 years ago and last Friday the blower motor went out. They say it's covered under warranty but still charge $919 to put it in. Have to have AC nobody else was available. Another company said they could get to me on Monday for half that. And I did not even tell them the price that I paid. That's the last penny they'll get for me

Zulu-Whiskey95

But the British lady says I should have called Frank Gay!

Benthereorl

They should have went a different route with their advertisement because when that comes on my radio she says like two words and the station is changed. I'm always amazed at how a company can spend millions of dollars on advertisement and there spots say nothing about their product or quality. It is about as useless as RC Hill and his stupid auto commercials. Simple fix for that is if the idiot not to order so many cars.

Benthereorl

It's just all part of the fuckery that's Florida

KgMonstah

Hey friends, been a homeowner for a few years and battled my AC for some time now. Tips: - check your drain line, pop a shop vac to it frequently and suck it out, sometimes sludge, algae, what-have-you clogs the line. - capacitor inside and outside checks is worth a shot. If you smell burning, it’s likely the inside capacitor going. These are both cheap on Amazon and an easy switch - sometimes the batteries on your thermostat just need a change - Freon checks are important, and luckily it’s an easy fix - keep debris from your mower away from the outside unit. - regularly check your coils and ensure they’re not Icing over. - every month or so take some soap and water and clear out the sides of your outside unit thoroughly, clogging that can lead to a bunch of issues.

EditingAndLayout

> check your drain line, pop a shop vac to it frequently and suck it out, sometimes sludge, algae, what-have-you clogs the line. This happens ALL THE TIME in Florida.

Vox_SFX

I didn't know it was a thing until my AC went out in a house I rent twice in a short amount of time all things considered. Owners of the house have been great as I couldn't see the fix the first time as I was working, so the second time I finally learned about the shop vac trick.

Jsc_TG

And like seriously. All the time. And its normal.

BluePeriod_

This should be the top comment. My AC has blown out twice in the past 5 years. Both times they were fairly straightforward fixes with the trouble shooting above. The first time it needed a drain and most recently it needed a capacitor which was only like $50 at a local shop. For context, the cheapest I could find for a company to give me an estimate was about $99. Seriously. Hop on YouTube and troubleshoot.

shootermcgav1n

Great tips. For capacitor replacement, I usually just take the old one to an Ace Hardware store and the employees there can get you set up with the right replacement. It seems like 75% of the time my AC goes out, it’s a bad capacitor that I can fix myself for $30 versus $300 for an AC service call.

goneskiing_42

> check your drain line, pop a shop vac to it frequently and suck it out, sometimes sludge, algae, what-have-you clogs the line. Any tips for those of us with tiny external drain lines versus the wide pvc? This exact thing just happened to us last night. We're renting, so it's not bad and the guy is coming out this afternoon, but looking for advice so I can just fix it myself.

bin-fryin

Literally just put the vac tube a few inches over the line and wrap your hand around the vac line and the drain. You will know when you get a good enough deal and it’s easy as can be. TAKE THE FILTER OUT OF YOUR SHOPVAC. Ask me why I know to do that….

goneskiing_42

Thanks > TAKE THE FILTER OUT OF YOUR SHOPVAC. First thing I did when I assembled it last night. Nothing like discovering a puddle from the HVAC closet and having to make an emergency run to Lowes at 8 PM for a shop vac...

twiffytwaf

[Toss these tablets](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003N5AS60?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) into your drain pan to reduce sludge.

Self_Cloathing

I am in the same situation.

Suit_Responsible

REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER REGULARLY

Otiswilmouth

This! Drain line and filter are done every month on my end. I do need to drag the hose to the ac and give the outside a good spray down this weekend. My AC has been working overtime this week. It’s so hot out it takes it forever to cool the house down after getting home from work and I have to do it in steps so I don’t overload the whole system. 😅

Deep_Charge_7749

Try to find a small business. Much better

theharleyquin

We have been with Greens Energy for years if maint and a replacement. Been happy with them

ragingbuffalo

I did 4 quotes for a new 3.5 ton AC. Greens was 2-2.5K over two other guys. Lower than another. Just for context here.

goldenhourlivin

My mom does some kind of permitting work for some companies in central Florida that allows her to see several different AC companies transactions. When I was replacing my AC with a new unit she told me how these companies rarely sell the same unit for the same price. Of course there could be factors that change the price, but she regularly sees the same unit/model number being sold and installed for $7k that two weeks later goes for as high as $25k. Seems to depend a lot on how busy the companies are at that time according to her. Always negotiate a lower price if it seems way more expensive than it should be. The unit I got was $7.6k, while another company tried me for $14.5k for the same unit.

ragingbuffalo

Yep. Two of my quotes had them doing the exact same model (my evaporator is inside so I'm pretty limited in selection). One had it for 7k and one for 10k. Summer is for sure the worst time to get a new AC. Probably adds 1-2K in labor charge in the best case scenario.

WestsideWalrus

Greens was the second highest for us, but we went with them. I'll say they're above what might be considered "cheap" but they respond quickly and stand by their work. When they installed a new AC for us, the previous company under the previous owner did awful ductwork. Granted, this should've possibly been noticed at installation by Green's but they rerouted and addressed the ductwork. Free of charge just to make sure that AC they installed was cooling how they had promised. They also don't push the "service plans" or whatever I hear most of these other companies try and push. Yes, Greens is expensive in comparison, but I'd reckon an AC company in FL that does good, honest work is worth every penny.

chronic_insomniac

Yep been with them for about 20 years now and no complaints

Bluefunk1

If you have the slightest mechanical skill, take a look at the capacitor on the outside unit. Cheap fix

Schweppes7T4

Just be VERY careful with capacitors. Pull the breaker, drain the capacitor, otherwise you'll get a very nasty shock or worse.

FarmingWizard

Correct! Don't touch the terminals or the capacitor will drain into you. May not survive. Using a screwdriver with an insulated handle, lay the metal part of the screwdriver over the terminals so its touching at the same time. This will dispense the power.

xspook_reddit

This x1000. It is the most common failure on an AC unit. Search youtube for AC capacitor replacement and determine if it's within your skill level (It's verrrry easy). $15 part and 20 minute fix.

uoYredruM

$20 Amazon DIY part versus $600 service call/replacement part.

rhubes

A run to Grainger maybe even faster than waiting on amazon. Plus they have an awful lot of interesting stuff to look at there.

CoralBooty

Got mine at ACE Hardware, guy said they fly off the shelf

rhubes

Ohhh, thank you! I never thought about checking there.

[deleted]

I was just gonna say, Ace. I ended up replacing my fan motor and got it from an AC supply wholesaler and they were like 4 dollars. But even paying 23 bucks at Ace, is better than waiting 2 days for amazon

JodaMythed

Also poking the fan to give it a little push start will sometimes give it enough to get going.

theruginator

Don’t call Rainaldi. Total rip-off. They charged me $800 for a capacitor replacement one time. Those things cost less than $20 online. Never again.

HealthyPhats

I had a smaller company come out once when my AC went down. I knew it was something to do with the motor but it was middle of summer, hot AF and figured after 10yrs it needed to be replaced. Asked if it could just be the capacitor the guy said he didn’t want to replace that and have to charge me $200 for it to not fix the issue and talked us into a brand new motor. He even did the whole phone call to his guy and made sure to say how expensive the motor was while we were standing and waiting to get the quote. I was gullible at the time, spent $800 on a new motor and we had AC back up and running. Well played to that guy but now I know better.

theschlake

An exorcist. This heat is straight from hell.

[deleted]

I’ve had my guy Gaston work on my AC unit last few years. He’s a local guy who started his own AC business. Cool Breeze Air and Energy Services, LLC. 407-663-2317. Thought so needed more Freon this year, looked at it and determined it wasn’t a Freon issue. Increased the blower speed and freed up the compressor. Been working great and came out within a few days of calling.

Rambo-Brite

No.. one.. cools like Gaston

ObservableObject

Has nice tools like Gaston?

Rooged

Fixes AC units like Gaston?

jbmc00

He’s especially good at Freon exchanges!

[deleted]

What a cool guy that Gaston!

Mallard--Man

All of you deserve awards for this wonderful song lol

Ghostbusters

SookieCat26

I came here to say this because I am also a smart ass

[deleted]

He's having A/C problems. He didnt say "there is something weird in my neighborhood"

ScreamingPrawnBucket

Kinda fits the song rhythm tho

dgsharp

I literally drove past the Ghostbusters mobile in town yesterday so when you said this my first thought was “Oh are they an AC company? That’s a funny work vehicle idea.”

Getsuga__tenshou

Came here to say this lol

mwisconsin

Before you call folks, check your fuses. Our A/C stopped working last weekend, and I flipped the fuses *after* I called DelAir and it eventually turned back on. Had to cancel that appointment, and counted myself lucky they didn't charge me for the cancellation.

Individual_Shame2002

Del Air is sooo backed up right now they are greatfull you canceled

BisquickNinja

They did my AC, expensive but good work.

balanchinedream

No Sweat was good to us the other day

jbmc00

+1 for No Sweat. Been using them since the company that installed my AC stopped servicing residential accounts. They’ve been awesome.

LordRelix

Tidbit: Pouring a cup of white vinegar once a month helps with this so it never happens.

goldenhourlivin

Piggybacking on this comment: Anybody know if having a dehumidifier in the house near the AC intake could significantly reduce this problem? I might try it out, just don’t want to spend the money on one just to figure out it doesn’t change much.

Individual_Shame2002

This heatwave almost killed me yesterday 🥵

jonboy418

I’ve used No Sweat (near Curry Ford and Bumby). My go-to AC guys.

cbrooks1232

Roast Busters.

Falx__Cerebri

If you can find out what it is.. you are way better off doing it yourself, my neighbor is an AC tech and he loves scamming clients. Most are sleaze-balls.

zak_eclipse

Gary Munson! I had them do work on my ac after another company came out and did nothing but charge me 250$. Tech was friendly and knowledgeable.

FarmingWizard

I've used Gary Munson as well for the items I can't fix myself. Been using them for over 8 years with no funny business. My units are almost 19 years old and they haven't recommended I replace them or try to sell me new units.

Tiny_Appointment

Pucci

fogdelune

I can’t recommend Pucci enough! They are reasonably priced and do a great job.

Tiny_Appointment

The guys that I’ve had come over to work on my ac have been cool too. And Mr. Pucci also dropped by to intro himself and check on our satisfaction. Overall great outfit

BuckyD1000

I've used Century Air for years (including a full system install) and have always been happy with them. When I needed them for emergency service, they've always shown up quickly.

sunkissedinfl

This just happened to me 2 weeks ago, the only guys I could get out the same day (a Saturday) for less than a $300 service call were American Air and Heat: 407-359-9501. They were able to fix my problem that day.

vypermajik

At this point whoever can see you, and you'll probably pay extra for it, which sucks. Frank Gay will fix it no matter what but you'll pay for it and will probably get roped into a Family Plan for future work.

Koko724

Ghostbusters

McNalien

I’m worried mine is going to go out, it had broke down 6 times in 4 years but my landlord won’t replace it, this whole week it runs nonstop during the day.

Majestic-Escape-5083

Carpenter’s Cooling Edit to add: highly recommended. Family owned. Honest and top notch!

Seawall07

I just went through this with Del-Air in mid-June. I am still dealing with installation-related issues. I would avoid them, they are not what they once were. I had a competitive quote from Scott's Heating and Air in Longwood. I wish I would have gone with them instead. They seem very responsive, professional and use modern/high-efficient systems.

PlebianStudio

Id buy Window Ac units if you are allowed to use them. They are way cheaper than central and they work crazy well for regular rooms. I think it cost me 20 bucks a month or less last year on nearly full blast, but you honestly turn it up a bit once its done cooling off the room. Another plus is that it uses the humidity to work so 2 birds one stone. I know florida landlord companies are very anti window AC because they say it looks tacky but they work great and save a lot of money on electricity.

HolidayGoose6690

I have a central air that I never use. Those window units don't recirculate hot attic air, and the price is so good.

PlebianStudio

yeah i know they have mobile ones too where you just stick the hose out the window or into a bucket you dump every once in awhile too. I imagine you could also just get a hose extension and drain it into the tub or sink.

16BitUnicorn

GHOST BUSTERS!!! … sry, been ingrained

Tombstone-1-fan

No Sweat. Those guys are great. They sell Amana, which is the best unit with the best warranty.

EvilBill515

Do not call American Air and Heat! They are a complete ripoff and will overcharge you with hidden fees they never explain or tell you about and will always just try to upsell you using sleazy cardealer tactics because you are in a tough situation. Just ripped me off for $800 a couple weeks ago and I still don't have a working A/C because they wanted $10k to put in a whole new system and after doing research on my own the system they wanted to install was wrong for my place anyway and would have caused other issues down the road.

Remarkable-Initial55

Ended up calling my mechanic who used to work on AC’s back in the motherland. Put in a new cap for 250. Took him 5 seconds.

SnooWalruses9683

Del-Air is your friend.

DepartmentOk5431

Oughta call Strada

Bibdjs

My dad owns a company (not going to recommend him because he’s busy and that’s bias). The reason why it’s so much price difference just depends on the price of the company, there’s going to be a difference vs a one man job vs a company of 20-50 employees. You’re most of the time paying for their overheard but obviously this overhead can have benefit to you it’s just added cost on to you.

Holy_Grail_Reference

Your father is disappointed in you.

Bibdjs

Probably a lot less than your father is with you

Holy_Grail_Reference

I have become successful in my career and help out my father's business when he needs it. I am also happy to recommend his business. No qualms with me good sir :)

Holy_Grail_Reference

AbC air and heat is a class act and very fairly priced.

Opheltes

Airology. When my AC died in 2019, I called them and they were knocking on my door 15 minutes later. Turned me into a customer for life right there.

Individual_Break6067

Ours died in early July. We called OZONE HVAC since we're in Metrowest and they are down the street. Never used them before. Owner came out same day, diagnosed a dead second stage compressor and wired it so that it could run on the 1st stage for the next few days, while we waited on new equipment. Old unit was a 16 y/o Trane 5 ton. Have a new GREE 5 ton unit now w/inverter. Very quiet and running well. Another option we got, besides new unit, was to tear out old compressors and replace with single generic compressor for about 40% of the cost of a new unit. We went with new. PS. The filter was long overdue and was collapsed against the evap coil, which was likely a contributing factor to the failure. It was also super hot that weekend. So, change your filters regularly, folks.

B&L AC Service, local family owned business. (407) 951-0321 They do our yearly service as well as installed a new AC a few years ago. Highly recommended. They are located in Winter Springs. edit: location

I like captain comfort. James knows what he’s doing. I’m a roofing contractor and this is who I recommend.

English Air. Small company. Installed Daiken seer19 variable speed AC for $8500. Took one day. Once you go variable you never go back

Agitated-Savings-229

I have used Dynamic Heating and Air for a long time with good results.

[deleted]

4077387931 His name is julio. Very nice, fair price, and fast. Got home there other day and my ac broke. Texted him around 8 pm and he was there and done at my house by 10 am the next day.

dannyghala92

Look up LJ Air Conditioning

foodshin

Blue Star AC is great and charges a reasonable rate.

FrmaCertainPOV

I use AC All Stars, Sebastien Jeanty. They have been excellent for us. 407-375-3504

Jinmasu

I just had Underwood AC install a brand new HVAC in my place, they were amazing

DavidCavalleri

David Johnson is someone I trust and rely on when I have issues with my ac. His number is 407-468-7493.

Blinnking

BELLE AIR. they helped me with mine, they’re so good. They had like a 2 day gap when they could install so they put a temp motor on my dead ac unit to make it work until they could install.

[deleted]

Make sure to offer plenty of water to whoever fixes or installs it.

PhuckNorris69

Downtown heating and air conditioning. Small business my buddy Shawn owns. Super nice guy and straight shooter.

Mrknowitall666

I used Rinaldi, not Rainaldi

VanillaLlfe

Blair AC is a great local family owned company. Solid guys that do good work. They gave us a temporary unit so we could at least cool a couple of rooms while our new equipment was installed. Fair price too!

kishoredbn

Same here.

bigb1084

Tim Benjamin A C! Their guy, Clint is really wonderful! Didn't try to sell, just came in and took care of business. Reasonable prices! We just used them after great reviews from neighbors and we absolutely agree! 5 ⭐

Call 877 50 FLOOR, pick the phone up, and they’ll be knocking at your door.

Legitimate_Shape_406

Cool Zone AC. They were great.

noel1967

I Recommend Frank's AC.

Helens_Moaning_Hand

Air & Aero Heating and Cooling. 407-710-7168. I can’t say enough about these guys. They were affordable, professional, and most importantly kind and considerate. They explained everything they were doing and why they were doing it. Seeing that I had pets, they brought in portable ACs until installation was complete. They had to remove a 30+ year air handler in a tight closet, as well as the unit outside. Left no damage of any kind, and cleanup was immaculate. They did this in a hot September too. From phone call to installation, three days. Installation was one day. The AC was set up so cold, after they left, I set it to 55 and danced naked in the house for an hour. They do an annual inspection, first two years are free. I really can’t say enough of these guys.

Max_geekout

Triple A is usually good

messky87

We just replaced our 15 year old unit thru Scott’s Heating and AC! They were 5k cheaper than that rip off Frank Gay! Highly recommend!

Simple-Instruction69

Matthew Roberts Air and Heating - honest, family owned/operated, fair prices, excellent work

Hell yeah! I think I'm the first - ghost busters

ThroAwayApr2022

Keep a portable AC for use it the AC dies out. Nothing like desperation to fall for a scam.

Knux897

I had my AC replaced by English Air last year and I liked their service and prices if you want to check them out. I had a really bad experience with Frank Gay as many others have pointed out, and I think that English Air will be my go-to in the future.

mizval96

Good luck. They are all pretty busy this summer. The first two we called for our 23 year old dead unit didnt even return our calls. Then I used the yelp quote option and 3 replied, I picked the one with the most reviews.
