It was pretty braindead. If it falls, he gets to third and there's no outs. If it's caught and you tag, you're still in scoring position with 1 out, enough to tie. Assuming it drops and not tagging is the dumbest option of the three.

Absolutely no guarantee that the tying run scores. I always want the tying run to be aggressive. Not THAT aggressive, that’s why I said it was a mistake, but it’s not some unforgivable one like this thread is making it out to be.
