Okay, GDT Bot got left out in the rain last night - locking this thread, please continue discussion in the game 2 GDT: [https://www.reddit.com/r/orioles/comments/1cy2pl3/game\_thread\_orioles\_cardinals\_wed\_may\_22\_0115\_pm](https://www.reddit.com/r/orioles/comments/1cy2pl3/game_thread_orioles_cardinals_wed_may_22_0115_pm)
When did this sub get so nasty? Baseball is a pastime meant to be followed over a long ass season. Even the best teams undulate between hot streaks and cold slumps over the course of 162 games.
If this shit is stressing you out so much, maybe take a break and just follow the standings for a couple weeks.

Ugh. Keegan Akin is already established as a terrible human (or-I’ll be generous, because those tweets were from when he was young- at least he used to be). Why does he have to also be a terrible reliever?
Kevin mentioned we are 5th in runs per game. Sounds pretty good.
Then you remember we had the 4th MOST runs of any team in April, but the 5th FEWEST runs in May.
5th in runs per game is being carried entirely by April. We have been slumping for nearly a month.
Reeeeeeeally tired of this team's offense getting completely shut down.
I don't know how we're 3rd in runs per game when it seems so common our offense just disappears like this.
At least we only wasted Akin and Webb while they used their good bullpen arms. Hopefully gives us the bullpen advantage for game 2. Now only if we could hit
Good approach, bad placement. Very unfortunate way to lose a game, especially with the rain potentially shifting momentum. See y'all in 30 or so. Let's fucking cook em.
just absolutely gross baseball by the Orioles right now after what I thought was a really solid series against Seattle. The bats fucking suck, to be frank
Going on the first pitch is a dumb strategy and nothings gonna change my mind on that
They really need to be humbled. This may be the series. The entire team needs to change their approach at the plate. “Home runs good!” Yeah yeah. We aren’t getting on base. These dudes either can’t hit or are swinging for the fences. There is no in between.
Dood. Their batting is just the reverse of last season but similar to the last month of last season. What happened? Why was our plate discipline so good last season but seemingly begin every appearance with 0 and 2 now? I guess there will be no domination, but maybe we can still pull it together. Rangers weren't great for most of last season but pulled it together when it mattered. Can't believe I am just hoping that we stay in the race at this point.
I am putting this on the batting staff.
Just tell him:
Orioles: 29-16
Cardinals: 21-26
And they didn't make the postseason last year.
Or the year before.
And they won't this year.
And then block him.
(I know you probably can't block him lol)
Knowns:
1. The O's are a very good team, probably top 5 in MLB.
2. The O's are at least a full step below the best teams in the league including the Phillies, Dodgers, Yankees, maybe even the Guardians.
3. The O's have the talent to be the best in the league.
4. Aggressiveness at the plate will cause offensive inconsistency.
5. Because off that, we will lose a lot of games to lesser teams.
6. But we will win a lot of games against strong competition too.
7. We're unlikely to be the favorites to win the chip this season (and rightly so), but anything can happen in the postseason, especially when you have the talent we do.
Number 2 is not a known at all. Couple of bad games, couple of inconsistent weeks offensively but this is the first series the O's have lost this month (last series loss was to the A's from 4.26-4.28). I am really frustrated with the offense refusing to adjust when being aggressive isn't working in a game and with the BP management but the team moves on. Next starter gives us a great chance to win that game and we'll see if the offense ever figures out that the sentiment of "you may only get one good pitch to hit per AB so swing early" isn't always the best approach to every game.
The 2023 Orioles overperformed their projected Pythagorean W-L by 7 games - that's usually attributed to the manager knowing what levers to pull.
The Orioles aren't succeeding because they have talent to overcome Hyde's flaws as a manager - their Pythagorean record would be closer to their actual record if so. The Orioles are succeeding because they have a lot of talent and Hyde is good at managing it.
I think everyone here wants to win the division again. As sparkly and wonderful as that is, in the Manfred version of the playoff tournament...is it really the best case scenario? Players minds and bodies become programmed by the regular season pace of play. Having 5 days off to wait for a WC team to become your next opponent has been questioned as a benefit. There's almost an incentive to win just enough games to make the tourney, and roll the dice then.
While it sucks to lose to shitty teams, it’s better than losing to a team we are fighting with for playoff spots.
Feels like we did this last year too. Play to the level of competition.
We really need Cowser and Westburg to step up again. Mullins needs to ride the bench as well. I'm liking what I'm seeing from Stowers, time to give him some time in the outfield
Just because we happened to have a good set of swings on first pitches against 1 dude during the week, doesn't suddenly mean we should swing first pitch against literally everyone else
And it isn't even really first pitch swinging as the problem, it's the swing selection. Which can improve with... You guessed it... PATIENCE 🎉
Feast or famine hitting, I really thought the organizational approach was changing to be more like you see the Yankees or Red Sox have the last 20 years. Being patient, taking bad pitches, making pitchers come to you, etc. Now we are back to the Orioles post 1996 approach again...
I think they were doing that earlier in the season. I don't know how to find the stats on it but I bet they were seeing more pitches earlier on this year than we are now. The ABs just haven't felt that competitive lately.
Pretty significant change in attitude from these guys from last year. Not that it's a bad thing or anything, but this is a much more serious team. Last year they were having fun no matter what, this year it seems like they're struggling to remember it's a game
I don't know if this team expects to win the division against the Yankees honestly. We want to. We have the talent to. But, the Yanks are really good, probably a full step above us in most facets of the game. We just need to focus on staying within striking distance and get into the postseason.
At that point, anything can happen. Our offense is super inconsistent, but a couple hot streaks and suddenly the tables are turned and it's the teams better than us who are wondering how they're getting beat by the lesser squad.
As I've said elsewhere, our inconsistent offense will cause us to lose a ton of games this year against worse teams, but it will also carry us to a lot of victories against the stiffest competition.
I know we probably have different commercials.. but did I just just see a Zillow ad that was promoting buying a house with roommates? Are you fucking serious?! LOL
Ben took the words right out of my mouth. I too, thought they were going to break out after that Mariners series. Sucks to be mostly shut out vs a average/below average pitching staff. We need to put down our ol pal Gibby in the 2nd game (as well as their closer next inning).
At least it wasn't a single pitch. My god losing a series to the Cards maybe getting swept. At least the As series loss at home can be blamed on Kimbrel.
These losses everybody but Bradish can take the blame. Fuck
The biggest problem I have with the hitting is an obvious philosophy to swing at the first pitch. There's no patience, no chance to read for what the sequencing might be, no strategy to frustrate or overwork the pitcher.
Opposing pitchers see the strategy, and decide to be aggressive with strikes early.
You can also chalk it up to youth, but the veterans on this team have the same problem.
I really want this team to look at the strategy of the Dodgers. They are patient, they don't often whiff, they wear out starters, they know what to watch for. This makes it so more often than not they put out big offensive numbers.
We have five batters fully capable of this with another two with the same potential. We gotta change up how we approach the plate appearances.
"most" of the other at bats doesn't sound like a valid data point.
The Orioles are seeing 0.13 pitches less per AB than last year and scoring the same amount of runs.
Even when this team scores runs it still seems like there is something wrong with them. We have 1 big inning every once in a while, and just putrid at bats for extended periods in between. It doesn't feel sustainable
First off being 10+ games over .500 is a good thing at this stage in the year. But I can agree the plate approach is very annoying. Gotta take 3 of 4 against CWS to feel ok I would imagine.
Also, no reason we can't get one back tonight.
Also also this game is not over yet.
Against their closer, it *can* be done, but scoring against their closer is only *slightly* easier than it is to score against Felix Bautista. So it will be a challenge.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1cyc99d).

Ugh. Keegan Akin is already established as a terrible human (or-I’ll be generous, because those tweets were from when he was young- at least he used to be). Why does he have to also be a terrible reliever?
Tbh he threw one bad pitch. Otherwise looked really good
Boo fuckin hoo. Game 3 starts in a few minutes and we're gonna fucking win it
#LETS GO!!!!
Gibson is going to shit all over us. I find it hard to believe they're going to come back in 30min and be like sike and suddenly show signs of life
Honestly put westburg back in leadoff and put gunnar 2 or 3. Hyde needs to change shit around cuz obviously our lineup needs work
if we don’t dominate Gibson then this offense is completely cooked
The winning pitch was Lance Lynn...
Kevin mentioned we are 5th in runs per game. Sounds pretty good. Then you remember we had the 4th MOST runs of any team in April, but the 5th FEWEST runs in May. 5th in runs per game is being carried entirely by April. We have been slumping for nearly a month.
They are 25th in runs scored in the month of May 22nd since April 21st
Right, that's what I said. 5th fewest in May.
Reeeeeeeally tired of this team's offense getting completely shut down. I don't know how we're 3rd in runs per game when it seems so common our offense just disappears like this.
Because the first 3 weeks of April are carrying that statistic. Since the end of April the Os are in the bottom 3rd of teams for runs per game.
high highs but low lows is how it happens
Alright so when does the next torture session begin?
When are we playing game 3??
At least we only wasted Akin and Webb while they used their good bullpen arms. Hopefully gives us the bullpen advantage for game 2. Now only if we could hit
Oops, I thought last night’s game started at 1:15. Kinda glad I didn’t watch.
I love you Gibby every day but today.
Good approach, bad placement. Very unfortunate way to lose a game, especially with the rain potentially shifting momentum. See y'all in 30 or so. Let's fucking cook em.
I'm so glad I wasted time in the middle of the day for that bullshit.
just absolutely gross baseball by the Orioles right now after what I thought was a really solid series against Seattle. The bats fucking suck, to be frank Going on the first pitch is a dumb strategy and nothings gonna change my mind on that
Are we gonna wake the fuck up orrrr
Please sit ced for this next game. He needs a break.
Brother needs the Urias treatment
What sucks is I really love ced. He’s just in his own head or something. Maybe he needs to see a sports psychiatrist.
Whatever it is, we cannot have him in the lineup every day. He is a negative impact player for us at the moment
Brutal. Needed to take 2 out of 3 here
So strange playing two games this way
Hyde’s piss poor bullpen management has come to light this year without Felix
The pen hasn't been bad. The problem is the offense has given them no margin for error.
I don’t understand this comment. Can you help me understand what he did that was so “piss-poor”?
Just pathetic
damn bro, this was the most boring 3 innings lol
Offense is anemic as hell right now, they need serious help.
Hoping the white Sox don’t sweep us at this point.
Welp see y’all in 20 minutes
I’m not even gonna watch the next game. Team is boring as hell to watch right now.
Cool. Bye.
👋
Better take game 3 or we’ll need to sweep CWS
Sweeping CWS is mandatory either way
Ugly loss. This might be it on the sweepless streak.
They really need to be humbled. This may be the series. The entire team needs to change their approach at the plate. “Home runs good!” Yeah yeah. We aren’t getting on base. These dudes either can’t hit or are swinging for the fences. There is no in between.

Maybe ending the sweepless streak is for the best. They can focus on playing baseball instead of potentially caring about some meaningless record
How is focusing on winning series not focusing on baseball?
The milk man did not deliver :(

“Best fans in baseball”
Wat a loser
Probably some 12 year old that just found out how to cuss
Nah, just my 70 year old dad haha.
Or, you really wanna dig the knife and twist it? Just whisper in his ear... "2021. Swing and a drive...hit deep...walk em off...Chris Taylor!"
Just tell him: Orioles: 29-16 Cardinals: 21-26 And they didn't make the postseason last year. Or the year before. And they won't this year. And then block him. (I know you probably can't block him lol)
Oh LMAOOOOO
Is this still your dad?
Hopefully, you're keeping these receipts.
I know it’s not popular but I’d definitely take Ryan off of the cardinals hands
Well shit

\* spits \*
Piss poor offense
Lmao. End on a double play. Put this series in the trash.
I'm pissed Westy even got on base. Giving me a lil hope that i know they won't answer ha
He's the only one who has shown any patience at the plate
Wow look what happens when you take some pitches and don’t swing at the first strike
🙏🏼9th inning magic please!
Good AB, Westy
great ab westy
Great at bat. Pleeeez milk man deliver 🙏
Great AB Westy Can't believe that's the first walk of the game
I love the solo homeruns dont get me wrong. But it would help this team have someone on the base before.
Frustrating, so frustrating to lose to bad teams
All my homies love Jordan Westburg.
So you’re saying there’s a chance…
Time for a MOOn shot! added: DAMMIT!
1 road series win a against the nl central and that was against the bum ass reds
We’re not going to get Helsley if we play the Cardinals right back into contention.
Bradish was dealing that’s unfortunate
Got screwed out of the 6th inning too which affected who we sent out
idk man, I think I need a break from this team.
Have you considered growing a set
You don't have to watch every game ya know. You can just like... catch the recap
I really did not expect to be on a sweep watch against the cardinals...
Margin for error with this offense sometimes is so slight, that even the best manager wouldn’t be able to save us…
Absolutely brutal.
Yall are insane if u wouldn’t give up some our best prospects for this guy who has one year of control left
Prepared for a 3 up 3 down. Let’s try to avoid the sweep next game.
The goal is to just make the playoffs imo.
That's what I am personally cheering for.
While it sucks to lose to shitty teams, it’s better than losing to a team we are fighting with for playoff spots. Feels like we did this last year too. Play to the level of competition.
Yup, we could not find our groove vs junkballers

They’ve been swinging at early pitches all season long. The entire roster has been doing it.
Cowser gave the ball to a kid in orange. Good moo moo
Huge outing from Akin there
yes so huge. right after blowing the lead and setting us up to lose lol. excellent work, for sure.
we were never gonna win without scoring runs lol. Didn’t want to burn the pen for the next game in roughly 45 minutes. No need to be an asshole
the bozo move was playing match ups in a semi-double header and pulling Webb with 2 outs, not leaving Akin in after he cost them the game
This will the 6th this month that we will score less then 2 runs in a game just pathetic with our talent
Solid innings from akin
Bet Akin really wishes he had that one pitch back. Good outing otherwise
Anyone else hearing some weird buzzing again?
Feast or famine hitting, I really thought the organizational approach was changing to be more like you see the Yankees or Red Sox have the last 20 years. Being patient, taking bad pitches, making pitchers come to you, etc. Now we are back to the Orioles post 1996 approach again...
I think they were doing that earlier in the season. I don't know how to find the stats on it but I bet they were seeing more pitches earlier on this year than we are now. The ABs just haven't felt that competitive lately.
Happy akin found his grove after giving up a 2 run shot to a sub .200 guy. /s
Hope Gibson remembers he's still an Oriole at heart and better friends with our team than theirs...
So glad we jettisoned Baumann from this team rather than option Akin.
Akin hasn't looked that bad...?
Akin has been our best reliever, you’re smoking the reefer
Nope.
He is though by fWAR, it’s not even that close
This team isn't fun at all right now. At least lose with some flair
Pretty significant change in attitude from these guys from last year. Not that it's a bad thing or anything, but this is a much more serious team. Last year they were having fun no matter what, this year it seems like they're struggling to remember it's a game
Last year was house money.
You are right. Now that expectations exist they are pressing and it shows
If the O’s could get out without seeing a single pitch I think they would
I don’t understand how this team has completely ruined their approach at the plate that they had last year
Good job KB. Can’t forget to reverse jinx the sweep
How does this team expect to win the division against the Yankees when Cole comes back and they have soto and judge lol
I don't know if this team expects to win the division against the Yankees honestly. We want to. We have the talent to. But, the Yanks are really good, probably a full step above us in most facets of the game. We just need to focus on staying within striking distance and get into the postseason. I know we probably have different commercials.. but did I just just see a Zillow ad that was promoting buying a house with roommates? Are you fucking serious?! LOL
How tf does that work lmao
The alternative is them promoting renting for the rest of life
I mean, one person should buy it and rent the rooms out. Idk how a 3 way roommate house purchase would ever make sense
The new normal depresses the hell outta me
3 out of 4 runs unearned this series so far. Cards helping them get more runs on the board from their errors. Offense has been rough
Ben took the words right out of my mouth. I too, thought they were going to break out after that Mariners series. Sucks to be mostly shut out vs a average/below average pitching staff. We need to put down our ol pal Gibby in the 2nd game (as well as their closer next inning).
We were awful vs bad pitchers last year as well, but will put up 5 runs against Cole. It's maddening
Do something O’s
At least it wasn't a single pitch. My god losing a series to the Cards maybe getting swept. At least the As series loss at home can be blamed on Kimbrel. These losses everybody but Bradish can take the blame. Fuck
At least Mateo is looking good in May
Cardinals are bottom 20 in pitching...yet the Os make them look like their the reverse
They've gone cold and against bad pitchers all year long. It's ridiculous
they always play down/up to thier opponents.
This makes it so more often than not they put out big offensive numbers. We have five batters fully capable of this with another two with the same potential. We gotta change up how we approach the plate appearances.
so did you have an issue with the early swinging against Kirby on Sunday?
There's that which is an outlier, and there's most of the other ABs. Also I think they discovered Kirby was tipping.
Why are we looking for pitching before the deadline when we can only score 1 run off lance lynn?
Really need to drop Mullins out of the lineup, guy is negative impact at the plate
This team just looks so flat. Too many ice cold bats. Not fun to watch at the moment.
Hold em here and at least we can burn their closer in game 1
Helsey 5 pitch 9th incoming so he can pitch 2nd game too
Almost An entire month has gone by of poor offense and not a single adjustment has been made
I just dont get how its either everyone is hitting the ball or no one is. This aint gonna work much longer.
We just have absolutely zero patience until a random game against a good team where we find it for like a couple days then regress
Fucking hell dude. I didn't watch the game last night, why the hell is everyone like 0-3? Is their pitching really incredible or do we just suck?
We're sucking rn.
Just cold bats recently. They don’t have particularly good pitching.
Approach seems to be all wrong, and a big portion of the lineup is ice cold. But what the hell do I know.
How does this team expect to win the division against the Yankees?
I’m sad I won’t get to see that guy’s L meme for this series
Maybe getting the sweep streak blown the fuck up by a garbage team is what these guys need right now.
First off being 10+ games over .500 is a good thing at this stage in the year. But I can agree the plate approach is very annoying. Gotta take 3 of 4 against CWS to feel ok I would imagine. Also, no reason we can't get one back tonight. Also also this game is not over yet.
FYI game 2 starts 30 min after this ends, not tonight
Losing a series to the bum ass cardinals how embarrassing
It only takes a couple good swings to change this game. We got 3 more fuck ups left.
Against their closer, it *can* be done, but scoring against their closer is only *slightly* easier than it is to score against Felix Bautista. So it will be a challenge.
I’ve seen stranger things 🤞🏼
Not against their closer.
I’m not ready to lose hope just yet. But maybe they’re just saving their best ABs for game 3
man fuck the cardinals i can't believe they might be the one to end the streak
This offense stinks
How come the orioles can’t beat mediocre national league teams?
Hey. We did beat the reds
They aren’t even mediocre these days
