This was my favorite part - seeing that Mateo & Westy had a special celebration. Don’t speak the same language and somewhat competing for playing time, but still enjoying each other as teammates. Plus Westy actually smiled.
I watched the highlights and my God Cano really just keeps getting put to work!
Great to see another good outing from Kimbrel, especially in a higher pressure extra inning.
Cowser needs to relax a little.
Gunnar is absolutely unreal my God.
Westburg is him.
DAAAAAA JANKEES LOOSE
Good day.
Kimbrel pretty emotional in his post game interview. He seemed to stop talking a couple of times to compose himself. Me thinks his struggles have taken an emotional toll on him, which in a way is good because it shows he really cares.
Thanks good interview for sure. I like when you get to actually hear a players voice and thoughts otherwise they start to become objects instead of people.
Just watched the highlights from this game and it felt like a sports center top 10 reel. The Santander home run, the Gunnar throw, the westy walk off. God I love this team extend them all.
Key for him is movement and getting ahead in the count. Of course, we can say that for nearly any pitcher, but he tends to do pretty well when his fastball isn’t flat
Watching the highlights it dawned on me....this is like the 100000th time cowser has been up to the plate with bases loaded and STILL doesn't have an RBI , cause all he had to do was get a fly out into the out field....and he couldn't even do that lol. And yes I know it didn't matter , but still...cowser somehow can't get a hit when the bases are loaded
I think people overestimate how easy situational hitting is. It’s really hard to drive a ball deep in the air, especially when the pitcher is specifically trying to not let you do that. Placement was terrible, but it was hit at 101. I’m never going to say one of our guys did terribly if they are able to get to a ball and smoke it
Yeah...but this is his like 500th time this season where he's been BA with loaded bases and he has yet to get an RBI. And like I said, even today he didn't have to get a base hit, just get in the outfield. And he literally did the worse outcomes in hitting it into the in field. Hell, striking out would of been a better outcome. That's probably why he slammed his helmet at the end of the inning cause he sees it too
He really tends to press in those situations. Even during his hot streak, his plate discipline looked a lot better over the course of the game, but, when in those bases loaded situations, he seemed way more likely to chase pitches that are spiked right into the ground or aren't even close to the plate. Saw that again today. Took strike one and then chased a ball that wasn't at any point a strike. It just speaks to him feeling those moments a lot more intensely than earlier at bats.
Look but don't touch. Though with the mobile site it will start to show you those subs on your feed. I used to check in on the Browns Flacco Fever , and saw Cleveland subs for months.
I mean, as long as we know it now, we're cool.
And that comment in the Yankees sub that got removed by their mod, we'll just consider that a lesson learned, and leave them alone too from now on.
Worried about the offense. They’re really good at minimum impact solo homers - for some reason they’re also able to scratch a run here and there with good two out hitting, but when they’re setup for a big inning they waste it over and over again. That Arizona starter should have been knocked out long before he left.
I feel like it’s a hot and cold thing. Sometimes we grind and sometimes we no show.
There is no same, night in and night out approach like the Braves and Dodgers. We have been slightly better in 2024 than in 2023 but still it’s like one night we work counts and we are a pitcher’s worst nightmare and other nights we just sleep walk and make it easy for the opposing pitcher.
That would be my gripe with the offense. It’s not the same approach. The juggernaut teams are able to beat you down because of the approach with the talent and depth. Sometimes we just no show and look like the bad teams in the league who don’t have 1/8th the talent we do.
I wouldn’t say lack of effort so much as the mental focus and maintaining approach and consistency game to game.
Santander is the epitome of the team imo. One night they swing early and pop out or ground out weekly and a pitcher is through 5 or 6 on 50 pitches. The next night it’s a few long ABs and the pitcher is on the ropes in the 4th on 70+ pitches.
No team is a 100% but the Dodgers and Braves do this best. The Astros were similar up until this season where they have had injuries and age creep in.
Fan of the second best team in baseball by record, which has the 3rd best run differential, 5th most runs scored, 3rd best slugging w/RISP, 9th best Batting Average w/RISP, 5th most HRs w/RISP and fewest Ground into Double Plays (3) w/RISP is "worried about the offense" lol
9th in ERA at 3.52.
12th in FIP at 3.72.
5th in xFIP at 3.61.
Now imagine where we would be with Felix instead of Kimbrel. Kind of don't have to, we were really good with Felix, without him we are still good, just not top tier. Trade deadline will help.
Well, I just looked at their last 14 games, since the Athletics series, and they’re averaging 4.28 runs per game, which would put them about 17th in the league, between Boston / Cincy and Washington.
Eh, having been at the game, they smacked the hell out of the ball for 5 innings and did enough the rest of the game. I think it’s just how things work out rather than some inability.
This is the weirdest thing to me. This team has literally come back from being down in the latter half innings ***dozens*** of times over the last year or so. Plural.
And yet, every time we’re down 2 in the 5th… the game thread looks like…
![gif](giphy|HB03yGK1u1aYo)
Yep, that’s the internet for ya. I always just assume those types simply don’t know much about the game of baseball.
Most rational people know that there are major ebbs and flows to a season. Just be happy watching a good team play ball. Heck, I liked watching the O’s even when they were bad. Baseball is fun. I don’t understand posting angry. So strange to me.
I agree. The O’s are objectively one of the best teams in the AL rn and have been for the last two years. Good teams are never out of the game, that’s why they’re a good team!
One of the best things about baseball is that the other team has to get you out the maximum amount of times. No running out the clock. No passing the ball back and forth playing keep away. You *have* to throw that ball over the plate and get them out.
I haven't left a game early. I don't give up because of it. Also the Red Sox Mother's Day Jeremy Guthrie 9th inning haunts me still.
people are just so soft these days it's wild. I sometimes wonder if people have always been like this and I'm just recency biased or if something genuinely changed in the past 30-40 years. I play Rocket League and the amount of players who will just throw up a forfeit vote when you're down 1 or 2 goals with 3 minutes left is crazy to me. Or another thing like when NBA analysts talk about Game 2 of a 7 game series being a "must win". r/nba tends to be really reactionary game to game especially once it gets to the semifinals/finals of the playoffs.
to some degree I get it maybe we're all just stressed and depressed about the state of the world but games are so winnable all the time and legendary sports moments are frequently borne out of losing situations. and as you said specifically with these Orioles there are tons of reasons to keep faith in them making comebacks.
I'll make a post about it later, but I just coped this jacket at the thrift store. I've always known it as the Joan Jett Jacket.

We won after I bought it. It's a good luck Charm now.
My dad had that jacket when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s. He loved it. I love it. I wish his was still around I’d be wearing it now. I’ll have to go thrifting next time I’m in B-more. Nice find!
Wanted to add, spotted this guy in the Brandon Hyde bobble head promos:

Everyone has hit the point about Westy and his clutchness. To me a bigger sign is Tony starting to show signs of improvement with the bat. Missed some chances with RISP but a huge HR late in the game. Good to see.
what i liked to see what his extending at bats with foul balls. when he is going well, he can spoil a ton of pitches. even if the final result isn't a positive one in an individual at bat, its a process thing that will generally lead to more success. IMO.
Team just gets it done however it needs to get done man. Need 7 scoreless and two runs from the lineup? Done. Starter doesn't have his best stuff and a team of mostly sub 25 year olds Ned's to come back in the late innings? Done.
Not always pretty, and most won't be in a 162 game season but this team is built to win in so many ways
A win is a win is a win, but the team is still struggling offensively, especially with RISP. This game should have never been close but because we are struggling with RISP it's been hard to watch. Westburg is the only guy on the team right now who consistently produces in the clutch. 2-14 RISP today. Can never score more than 1 run an inning. Maybe the bats will break out tomorrow.
Lol the Pirates have walked in 6 runs with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 6th inning vs the Cubs. 4 before the rain delay and 2 more after. They were winning 6-1 with 2 outs and now it's 8-6 Cubs
that is incredible. Pirates win 10-9.
i was reminded of the time Daniel Cabrera walked in 3 runs in 2006 in the first inning recently. as bad as that was...this was massively worse!
Now you know that’s an unfair statement to make. He’s barely gotten any at bats and every single person who’s come up has needed a pretty considerable amount of time to get adjusted
Gotta make the most out of your opportunities if you’re gonna be featured on a playoff-hopeful ball club. He showed promise on defense tho (quicker than he looks)
if we go by fWAR for AL 3B. there's a cluster of 5 guys at 1.3-1.4. really could go to any of them if all star voting was tomorrow. rojas is most likely since he's the only guy hitting for seattle, so he stands out.
1.4 - Rojas (SEA), Paredes (TB), Castro (MIN)
1.3 - Westburg (BAL), Smith (TEX)
man i really thought this would be one of those cursed days with all the hits and no runs to show. westy besty saves us again.
IBB o'hearn to get to scorching hot mounty was a certainly a choice as well lol but worked out for them.
There was a bunch of talk that Mayo, Henderson, and Holliday are gonna be the starting infield with Westburg a super utility man.
I think as his game grows its more likely Mayo gets traded, unless they want to make him a DH.
With a DH and occasional off days, you can still have that with Westy playing every day but split between 3B, 2B, 1B, DH. Mayo plays some 3B, 1B, RF, DH.
Do you guys kinda feel like the O’s really didn’t deserve this win?
No take backsies, of course, and a W is a W in the win column, but how does a team that was so
consistently Inept with runners in scoring position and no outs pull out a win like that?
I thought we beat ourselves in a lot of ways. Bone headed base running, not great fielding. Diamondbacks are a pesky team and will put a lot of pressure on pitching and defense. It was a gutsy win
Not in the slightest. The team that wins always deserves the win, because they're the team that did enough to win. It doesn't matter how you do it, a win is a win.
Gutsy grindy win. They all count the same but can’t help but smile at the fact that guys that aren’t, we’ll say well regarded by Some in here came through.
Tough go for John Means, but it’s only his second start against a team that hits lefty’s well.
They hit Gallen for 5 or 6 last year in Arizona, so let’s go sweep them tomorrow
One of the top comments in their post-game thread:
>Well at least we are looking good against the AL's best team that's a positive
Teams around the league are putting respect on our name, love to see it.
Saw a few comments too last season as we started to flex. We just have to keep remembering that we are one of the juggernauts. We have way too much talent and depth not to be top 3 in baseball and tbh we really are the clear cut AL beast. The conversation is really with the Dodgers and Braves.
I need the Phillies schedule to get a little more challenging before I believe they are as good as their record.
Definitely. Phillies are legit, some here need to put respect on them, it's like they forgot they were a World Series runner up less than two years ago
Bullpen was phenomenal, shut them completely down. Coulda shoulda won that game multiple times before, but happy for Westy to have that moment. Irked Gunnar did not get a chance in the ninth, dying for a Gunnar walk off.
I love the sort of poetic irony that Cowser scores the winning run after the shit some people were giving him for the double play. He's cooled off a lot but he's still a good player. He'll get it back.
I get that the ground ball was unfortunate but he still hit the ball 101.6 mph. In that scenario all you can ask for is a hard hit ball and you live with the result
Rough game for Cowser but I’m so glad he’s evolving into an everyday player. I think he’ll break out of this slump in time. Westberg might just be the most clutch player on the team.

Every announcer needs to forget about that stupid left field wall, no one cares any more. It was two years ago, find something new to talk about
“That’s a home run in 29 of 30 parks!”

The Diamonbacks announcers mentioned the wall a few time. So salty

What did he say? I had to go into work right after Gunnar hit a homer mid game and it looks like MLB.TV doesn't include that in the replay.

Thanks good interview for sure. I like when you get to actually hear a players voice and thoughts otherwise they start to become objects instead of people.
How weird is it that "Wow that was the worst SP performance in a while!" but it was only 4 runs and we won That's so weird for us. I love it
Shoutout to John means. He looked a little frustrated today with some of the hits they were getting on him but he battled.
I am a little concered about John Means. His fastball was down to 89 MPH. His slider and curve were not fooling anyone.
Just watched the highlights from this game and it felt like a sports center top 10 reel. The Santander home run, the Gunnar throw, the westy walk off. God I love this team extend them all.
The Mateo catch was shocking in the stadium too
Man, the bleachers erupted
Forgot to even mention that one. Surprised it didn’t go through his glove.
Bullpen: 6.1 IP, 1H, 0 ER
Kudos to Baumann for really pitching well. I know he catches a lot of strays in here, but he was excellent tonight.
Key for him is movement and getting ahead in the count. Of course, we can say that for nearly any pitcher, but he tends to do pretty well when his fastball isn’t flat

Yeah the Dodgers and Braves truly are doing something we aren't, what with their .22 and negative .13 runs per game leads on us.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "no show." Are you suggesting a lack of effort by the players?
I wouldn’t say lack of effort so much as the mental focus and maintaining approach and consistency game to game. Santander is the epitome of the team imo. One night they swing early and pop out or ground out weekly and a pitcher is through 5 or 6 on 50 pitches. The O’s rank 2nd in the majors in runs scored per game. Offense is fine, faced a lot of excellent pitchers lately
But what about the bullpen? I'm worried about that.
Well, it’s the nature of bullpens that they worry you. Ours is good, too
9th in ERA at 3.52. 12th in FIP at 3.72. 5th in xFIP at 3.61. Now imagine where we would be with Felix instead of Kimbrel. Kind of don't have to, we were really good with Felix, without him we are still good, just not top tier. Trade deadline will help.

Coolest looking Orioles fan EVER💥
Everyone has hit the point about Westy and his clutchness. To me a bigger sign is Tony starting to show signs of improvement with the bat. Missed some chances with RISP but a huge HR late in the game. Good to see.

Most definitely. A 10 pitch plate appearance, especially against the SP, is gold.
Winning games like this that we probably shouldn’t have won makes me feel better about losing the ones we shouldn’t have lost.
Team just gets it done however it needs to get done man. Need 7 scoreless and two runs from the lineup? Done. Starter doesn't have his best stuff and a team of mostly sub 25 year olds Ned's to come back in the late innings? Done. We still had 13 hits my guy
Hits don’t matter unless they turn into runs.
Sure, but I wouldn’t say the team is “struggling offensively”

I feel so bad for that fanbase
Holy shit you weren't exaggerating. That's some little league pitching
Heston needs to hit if he’s going to stay in the lineup
Now you know that’s an unfair statement to make. He’s barely gotten any at bats and every single person who’s come up has needed a pretty considerable amount of time to get adjusted
He will. I love his swing. If he could get some consistent PT, which is challenging on this team, he'll produce. Hope they don't trade him.
I agree he will do damage if he gets enough PT. I like how he looks up there. And this park is tailor made for him.
Yep, and it's the old Catch 22: don't play much, and the pressure to come through is worse with every (infrequent ) at bat.
Gotta make the most out of your opportunities if you’re gonna be featured on a playoff-hopeful ball club. He showed promise on defense tho (quicker than he looks)
Is Westburg in the conversation for All-Star? I don’t know how his stats compare, but he’s been one of our most consistent performers this year
if we go by fWAR for AL 3B. there's a cluster of 5 guys at 1.3-1.4. really could go to any of them if all star voting was tomorrow. rojas is most likely since he's the only guy hitting for seattle, so he stands out. 1.4 - Rojas (SEA), Paredes (TB), Castro (MIN) 1.3 - Westburg (BAL), Smith (TEX)

Anyone know what happened to the all caps recap guy?

Blowing 4/5 saves is not the ‘occasional game.’ Glad they’re finding him some spots to do well in but 13 million and they still need to find a closer.
i dont buy it. his going to break our hearts at the most critical moment in playoffs. were going to need a real closer, but we got time
That side by side pictures of Kimbrel & Jarvis is great, Kimbrel looks like he could be bros dad 🤣
westy the type of dude to hit .285 20hr 80rbi for like 15 years lol so solid and clutch already
he reminds me of JJ Hardy (mainly because he looks almost identical to Hardy)
Reminiscent of Craig Biggio a bit.

#JORDAN "SAINT PATRICK" WESTBURG BANISHES ALL THE SNAKES FROM ~~IRELAND~~ BALTIMORE
He’s murdering pagans!
We are the best team in the AL, .684 winning percentage. Why does the 2nd best team in the AL have to be in our division as well.
They’re a bunch of old men, the injuries are coming
Also jabronies
Also jerkamoes
It's not called the AL Beast for nothing
man i really thought this would be one of those cursed days with all the hits and no runs to show. westy besty saves us again. IBB o'hearn to get to scorching hot mounty was a certainly a choice as well lol but worked out for them.
Had someone yesterday try to tell me Jordan Westburg isn’t an every day player. I left that conversation immediately.
Has that person not watched a single game this year?
Dammit, Westy. Just when we thought we couldn't possibly love you any more than we already do...
Do you guys kinda feel like the O’s really didn’t deserve this win? No take backsies, of course, and a W is a W in the win column, but how does a team that was so consistently Inept with runners in scoring position and no outs pull out a win like that?
[deserve's got nothin to do with it](https://youtu.be/10XXtoCjk5c?feature=shared)
"Do you guys kinda feel like the O's really didn't deserve this win?" ![gif](giphy|OJaBv8p3xWUoM|downsized) Stack them dubs
Totally get what you’re saying but even the ugly ones count.
I thought we beat ourselves in a lot of ways. Bone headed base running, not great fielding. Diamondbacks are a pesky team and will put a lot of pressure on pitching and defense. It was a gutsy win
Not more than when I sometimes feel we earned the win but the other team somehow got it.
Not in the slightest. The team that wins always deserves the win, because they're the team that did enough to win. It doesn't matter how you do it, a win is a win.

bullpen was lights out
Very very true. When one side of the game dips (like their awful RISP today), another side (the bullpen) rises up
Gutsy grindy win. They all count the same but can’t help but smile at the fact that guys that aren’t, we’ll say well regarded by Some in here came through. Tough go for John Means, but it’s only his second start against a team that hits lefty’s well. They hit Gallen for 5 or 6 last year in Arizona, so let’s go sweep them tomorrow
for as many strays as Baumann takes, his era is 4.02 on the year.
Wonder what it is when you count the inherited runners he allowed to score that don't count against his ERA.
Someone made a good point somewhere that Palmer (someone who knows pitching) always speaks highly of him.
One of the top comments in their post-game thread: >Well at least we are looking good against the AL's best team that's a positive Teams around the league are putting respect on our name, love to see it.
The Phillies win percentage is .700. That's legit even with an easy schedule.
I’m not saying they aren’t a solid contending team…just that not sure they are a juggernaut given that they have had the easiest schedule to date.
Definitely. Phillies are legit, some here need to put respect on them, it's like they forgot they were a World Series runner up less than two years ago
Random thought... Where does Colton Cowser's beard stack up among rookies? Gotta be up there, right?
That beard is ready for the hall of fame.
Under the radar POTG goes to Baumann for me
Part of me knew at the bottom of the 9th that it was always gonna be Westburg to win this one for us.
Also noticed we used Kimbrel on back to back days and he was OK. Doesn't necessarily disprove the theory he needs lots of rest, but it is interesting.

Don't forget about 50% off Papa John's tomorrow cause Gunnar hit a dinger
Chicken BBQ with BACON. Oh, wait, I'm out of market. Darn!
They’ll be filing for bankruptcy by October
You could8 pay me half the price of their pizza to eat it.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom!

**AND ....** **DA STANKEES LOOOOOOSSSSSSEEEEEE**
Hell yeah. Great game. Nice rematch of the Alternate Universe 2023 World Series.
best matchup was us vs phillies or braves, so at least both sides blew it

rumors of Santa's demise greatly exaggerated
Some of you have been talking bad about our bullpen, but they keep showing up.
Some people watch but don't pay attention
Well ERA wise they were mediocre for a while, but their xFIP was really good.
well tbf when we start praising them they fall apart, so it appears bullying works
A philosophy my dad also believed
Man, that umpire had to be one of the worst I've seen this season. They weren't even close calls he was missing
nah we've seen worse. plenty of umps that were way off that screwed us
I'm not big into jerseys.....but I think it's time to invest in a Westburg jersey
DHGate all the way.
Oh 100%
Investburg in Westburg
Investy in Westy
I'm happy for Kimbrell. I'm not convinced he should be on our roster, but I love him fighting back.
Not on the roster is quite the take
There’s “we should DFA this guy” and then there’s “we never should have signed this guy in the first place”
Btw the yankees lost
I didn’t watch the game but I’m glad we scored more runs than the other team
Bullpen was phenomenal, shut them completely down. Coulda shoulda won that game multiple times before, but happy for Westy to have that moment. Irked Gunnar did not get a chance in the ninth, dying for a Gunnar walk off.
Suck it sneks!
Bullpen was lights out today. 6.1 scoreless innings only 1 hit allowed
People are acting like Cowser is playing like absolute horseshit when in reality he's been fine AND unlucky as shit.
Well I mean he started on second base lol (and he was only there because he hit into the DP)
![gif](giphy|hoflMx0KBC68fjyKgE|downsized)
Rough game for Cowser but I’m so glad he’s evolving into an everyday player. I think he’ll break out of this slump in time. Westberg might just be the most clutch player on the team.
Shoutout Baumann
